    Today I give you a full tour of every vegetable and flower growing in my suburban garden. I begin the video sharing the size of my garden, which is 58x48. I have 23 beds that are 23 feet long and 3 feet wide. I heavily mulch my paths and use various techniques to keep the weeds out of my garden. I am gardening in zone 7a/b and I discuss why my zone is on the cusp and how I have to watch the weather closely when harvesting or I can lose crops to surprise frosts. We walk through the Spring garden where I show you my onions, herbs, sugar snap peas, cabbage, broccoli, lettuces, kales and potatoes. I share tips and tricks that I have learned over the last years that I have been learning to garden. I hope the joy that I share for gardening will inspire and encourage you to plant your own garden as well as encourage you to continue to spend time in your already established one.
    As we walk through the summer garden, I explain the varieties I am growing and the amounts that I am growing. In the summer garden I show you my sweet potatoes, peppers, squash, zucchini, basil, tenderette beans, and three different varieties of corn. I discuss the various flowers and herbs I am using to companion plant. I hope you enjoy this look into my 2023 vegetable garden.

The twins are so small and take Mama time constantly. l can see in this video how positive you have become concerning your first year in a beautiful new home and yard, and how much all the children are loving it. Already so much success, I am so pleased for all of you. 😊❤😊

    Bri, those are flea beetle holes in your eggplant leaves. Eggplant grows great for me (I’m not far from you) but the flea beetles absolutely decimate it.

      I agree that that is flea beetle damage. I get flea beetles every year on my eggplants but have never treated them. It doesn't take long for the eggplant to outgrow the flea beetles and that way I can avoid putting a pesticide in my garden.

My last Tithonia bush was 7 feet tall. They are an absolutely beautiful flower and will attract so many pollinators, including hummingbirds. Please consider moving those plants to areas where they can grow to their full potential.

    Bri, what a beautiful use of that grassy expanse - with your house in the background, it captures the essence of a prospering old country farmhouse with a kitchen garden - just beautiful. It stood out to me when you said your fam doesn't enjoy peppers cooked in chili and etc - neither does mine. I dice and freeze mine to pull out to add a frozen handful to the top of my chili bowl - the fresh taste and crunchy texture is sooo good! Thanks for sharing your bounty! ❤

    Bri, do you know why I watch this channel? I've been doing this since I saw the episode of you in the garden a few years ago. You said then: "If you have flowers on the table every day, you are the rich man". I have a successful professional life, but I also love gardening. I remember my co-workers mocking and jeering at my passion. They laughed at my fingernails, which were never like my office colleagues, at my scratched hands when cutting bushes, that I like farming, ...as if that meant I was inferior to the rest. Your words gave me comfort and a lot of peace at that time. Then came the crisis, the fashion for ecology, the pandemic... and many began to envy their own potatoes, onions and carrots, as well as fruits and, of course, flowers. But words spoken that hurt can't be taken back. Fortunately, there were also your words that became an inspiration for me.

    • @AB-ol5uz
      @AB-ol5uz Год назад

      I'm sorry your efforts were diminished...both of my grandparents farmed professionally and gardened their entire lives as most people that were impacted by the Depression (and a lack of refrigeration) did. I grew up exposed to it but not in a home that had our own garden. So as an adult, I did not understand the significance in health, productivity and sustatainability until just a few years ago - I don't think I would have been one that mocked your interests as a fellow corporate professional - but I would not have respected it as it should have been - so I apologize on behalf of those co-workers for bruising your heart. As Jesus said - "they know not what they do" - that doesn't excuse careless remarks or mockery - but I hope you'll find it in your heart to forgive them of their ignorance and self-righteousness attitudes.

    • @ecogarden3622
      @ecogarden3622 Год назад

      @@AB-ol5uz Thank you. But... Why do you feel guilty? You weren't being rude. I don't work in a corporation, but in cultural institutions. At the time at the opera. I also come from a family with horticultural roots. It gives me the feeling that no matter what happens, I can feed my family. This skill can be very useful. There is the war going on in neighboring country and from time to time rockets fall on our side.

    The end if last summer the grass and weeds got the better if me and overtook the entire garden. Now in late winter I'm starting to prepare the garden for spring, and (except for the carpet of weed seeds which is giving me anxiety) im so greatful for the abundance of hay the grass and weeds are creating! As i weed each bed, the sun dries the weeds and turns it into hay that I am mulching back into the paths and beds. Hay was so crazy expensive this year, so im counting last years failure as this years win. ❤

    I just learned today to not let a cucumber ripen and get too large or yellow, it kills the plant. It feels it is done growing/producing for it’s life cycle. I have been gardening for 30 years and didn’t know that. Cucumbers are my favorite to get out of the garden. I will be watching them closely and harvesting like crazy.

    Your garden is SO beautiful!! Please remember that onions are edible at every stage of life and they dry very well or freeze dry very well in circles! My yard is 20feet out from my home all the way around. I have 8 gardens that stretch all the way across 2 sides of my yard. I love to walk through my gardens in the morning. It helps me to see who is doing well or not but it rained all day yesterday and my gardens look so beautiful!!:-) Maybe if you put a shade cloth up, your carrots will be sweeter? I have oak barrel halves and grow potatoes very well. There are only indeterminate potatoes available to grow in our area of BC . I grow Red Chieftain potatoes. Next year I will add some fingerlings, as well. I have found that cucumbers love to grow with radishes and they are very heavy water drinkers. Perhaps you have something growing next to your cucs that compete? I too love flowers all over the gardens. I also have been adding things that I have never grown before. This year glass gem corn and broccoli, brussels and cauliflower from seed. I just learned that dill does not like to grow with carrots. When cooking with peppers I like to wait until just before the dish is served and add the tiny chopped peppers. Then they are not slimy.
    Brightest Blessings

    Hey! Just wanted to mention with the amount of rain in your area, you'll need to look at retaining walls to keep that good healthy soil from running into the ditch. You might find it easier financially to begin maybe next year with just one layer, then as the soil begins to move, you can add more layers as you need it. best of luck bri!

    The yardlong beans are best if harvested at about 18".
    The peaches & cream corn is what we plant here in Michigan. It is the most popular bcuz of its flavor, ease to grow & the amount of harvest. I hope you like it also.

    My Yukon golds have already flowered, kinda sparce but they have. I planted mine back in March though, don't remember when you planted yours.
    I'm in the same place you are, first year garden at a new place. Can't wait til the following years to see it mature. I do the same thing, raised rows with wood chips, they actually look very similar, lol.
    I'm in 7A and already picking tomatoes and squash but my last frost date is April 1st, yours will be ready in no time!
    I'm sticking in flowers as well, beauty and medicinal.
    Those little holes on the eggplant leaves aren't from watering. Eggplant does that from bugs. I never have gotten any plants that don't do that, lol, and I water at night.
    The secret to a crunchy pickle that I have found is to not put the cukes in with the hot liquid. I don't cook mine together as some call for and I let my liquid cool a bit before putting it in the jars with the cukes. They stay crunchy and very light colored.

    I would flip the strawberry /flower be just because of the shadow (probably late or early but still) so that in springtime the soil is sunny and warmed up. Annual flowers care a little less about sun aspect.

    I just purchased 3 unusual herb plants, Im not sure if they sell them in US but Mushroom Plant, Herb leaves taste like mushroom, Cola Plant (great for cocktails smells like Cola bottle candy) and Olive Herb Plant great with Italian recipes, all are growing well only have one of each but so happy with them. And Im sure next year they will grow a-lot bigger, oh and I have found Garlic Kale Seeds which I have sown so cant wait to try that.

    My dad always had us step on the onion tops so they would get more energy to the bulb instead of the tops. Worked great for him and was fun for us!

    Hey I have always grown really small kale, swiss chard, collards, cabbage, etc but I recently discovered that my soil was lacking nitrogen. I now use about a half cup soaked alfalfa pellets at the base of each plant, when I plant and about a month later and I have the biggest and best cabbage, kale, collards, swiss chard, etc. It is quite amazing and a lot cheaper then a lot of fertilizers I found for my kales

    We grow peaches and cream corn up here in Michigan. It's one of my favorite corns. It will be interesting to see if it grows well in your area. I'm sure you've read up on it or you would not have planted it. Your garden is beautiful. If I hadn't been following you I'd never know if was a first year garden.

      I grew it 1 year in Atlanta, and it was amazing! It rarely made it into the house. I even had the neighbors eating raw ears while we were talking once. 🤣 They were shocked at the texture and flavor.

      Fresh corn is a whole different category than store bought for sure!
