We bought a 2014 Passat TDI (w/ DSG) right after the dieselgate scandal hit. Drove the hell out of it for 2 years and then accepted VW's buyback offer for 2.5x what we paid for it. Naturally we tried one or two other vehicles, and then went looking for another TDI (with a manual trans this time), which we hope to keep for the next 20 years. These are fantastic cars.

I do agree, specifically with a manual transmission on it. I’ve always wanted one, still do.

I'm in Europe at the time, rented a vw passat diesel, and I'm impressed, I live in las vegas, wouldn't mind this kind of mpg at all. Specially compared to a jeep gc. Or 4runner

06.30.24: Got a pristine 2015 Jetta Wagon with 80,000 miles.
Took a long time to find a pristine model and I had to pay a premium ($15K), but I am confident it will outlast my years.

I bought a 2014 a little over a year ago with 84,000 miles, and aside from a burned up alternator it’s been pretty good.

The TDI Passat can go for high 10-20k at dealers. If in real good condition, maybe even 20-25k.
It's better at highway/road trip driving rather than stop and go city driving. Hitting 40-50 mpg makes it a great long distance car.
Edit - The DSG (Direct Shift Gearbox), is a computer controlled manual transmission. Shifts faster, but the hesitation from a stop is the system "Letting out the clutch".

I’ve been into VWs for years. Had a 96 GTI with the 2.7 vr6. Absolutely loved it. Had a 2012 Jetta with the 5 cylinder and a 5 speed manual. I just bought a 2014 sportwagen TDI with the 6 speed manual 2 weeks ago. I absolutely love it so far.

Vw enthusiast here! Definitely change that Dsg fluid every 40k it’s taking a ton of heat from clutch slip heat and fluid degradation. I bought this exact car brand new not yours but I DROVE that car wow. The only problem I had was the heater core kept clogging due to the EGR cooking the coolant making the coolant acidic. I did 6 heater cores in the time I had that car. That was the most expensive thing and absolute pain to do. It’s really easy because the dash doesn’t come out. But that car saved my life I was hit at a red light by a driver on fentanyl. Totaled at 179k after I did all my maintenance my self lol but I won’t buy it again because I get 1-8 mpg less in my golf sport wagon 1.8t and diesel is so expensive unfortunately for it to make sense because I love tdi rattle. If I lived in Florida emissions would be deleted if I bought another one.

Heater core is in the middle in front of the center console. Comes out the driver’s side by removing the panel on the side. I believe you first loosen a bolt out in the engine compartment firewall. Mine has that same vent heat problem on the passenger side. Heater core job didn’t look too bad. If mine is still under warranty I’ll definitely have the dealership do it, but if not doesn’t look bad to do. Just make sure to get a good coolant flush first or the new heater core will plug up too I’ve heard.

Bought 2015 VW TDI Highline (SEL+) brand new in 2017 (sat in lot for 2yrs). Got it stolen - found 2 days later with gasoline in the fuel system -total write off. Year later, bought the same year, make and model, but seller removed the DEF system and slightly tuned it. Approx 170k miles going strong.

I test drove a 2014 Passat TDI back in summer of 2016. It had around 200k miles and was throwing a code for one of the glow plugs, I almost bought it and probably should have to be honest! I was very impressed with the way it drove and accelerated. I was so worried that it would have cost somewhere around $1k to repair and the car was already at the top of budget at the time.
We're moving cross country, I might pick one of these TDI's up.

For my first car, I can't decide whether to buy a diesel or gasoline car. I'm in Europe and I would drive both 50/50 in short distances in city and also longer distances on highway. I want to buy 2015-2016 VW Passat (B8). Any recommendations?

@@VikingsGarage Thank you!! Why would you go for a diesel? They have DPFs and are bad for short distances and I would do those 10-20min drives as well. I'm not trying to justify gas engines but rather to understand which is best for me.
