Peanut Butter is now a liquid. Yes, you read that correctly, Loyal Theorist. That smooth, gooey, creamy peanut-y goodness is now classified as a liquid by the TSA. And that means you can NO longer fly with it on an airplane (unless it’s under 3oz, of course). But why? Why would the TSA do this? And will you never be able to eat peanuts, peanut butter cookies, or a Butterfinger on an airplane again? Let’s find out!

Hi!
YOU CAN BRING FIREARMS IN CHECKED BAGS?!
Guys look the emotional damage guy lets shank im' and take his money
Yes? It's a CHECKED bag. AKA, *_it goes under the plane_* where, *_you cannot access it while in-flight!_*
You can take anything in checked baggage - except bombs, obviously. Or regular illegal crap like drugs.
Steven I subbed to you at 200k ! Loved you since then. Don’t give up
Sure..why not? They should be allowed concealed and carried on the people that own them.
Yes. Second amendment. :3
I used to consult for a company that sold X-ray scanners to TSA. The software sometimes flagged peanut butter as plastic explosives, to the point where their engineers would joke that the quickest way to an interrogation room was to pack a jar of peanut butter with a wire sticking out.
Actually, you need a power source too, so peanut butter plus wire plus batteries tapped to the lid.
@@kumiho4970 now you are asking for a reason to get cavity searched and held for 24 hours.
Yeah, the Hounsfield units of peanut butter is similar to that of some explosives.
@@TheKesmaHhmm,, interesting
Well, that's how TSA Agents always see it. This is why they don't allow liquids in the first place.
The reason TSA had to define creams pastes and gels separately, is because the average traveling public don't understand viscosity with fluids. I work in an airport and I know of three separate incidents where a passenger thought that their wine wasn't liquid because it's "a dry wine" and a passenger that thought their camera wasn't an electronic because they didn't buy it in the electronics section. I even know of at least one incident where someone thought water wasn't a liquid.
Water isn't a liquid when it is frozen solid or heated until it becomes a gas.
I don't know what kinda junk they were huffing, but I'll gladly have some if it sends me to LaLa Land, where I doubt Goldeneye splitscreen is played. 😂

The TSA could have avoided this headache by classifying peanut butter as a gel, paste, or cream. That way, they could still get the restriction on it, and be accurate while doing so.
It's classified as an LGA which stands for liquid, gel, aerosol. Anything that can't hold its shape without a container falls under LGA.
@@robertogurrola7465 Would they consider a jar of sand an lga?
@@appa609 no, that falls under the powder category. But it would still be tested for explosives just like anything other "powder".
@@robertogurrola7465 while I haven't had peanut butter, I imagine the consistency is similar to that of other sandwich spreads, and in my experience, they can hold their shape without a container
The TSA thrives on confusion and bad definitions. It will never clarify anything. It's how they get their funding.
I once made peanut butter while on an airplane by using the bag of peanuts that they gave out as a stress ball. On a long enough flight I could probably bring a pound of whole peanuts and end up with a full jar of peanut butter. 🤔
X
I once churned a pound of butter on an airplane by doing nothing but shaking the bottle of milk I got from the flight attendant. On a transatlantic flight I could churn enough butter to sculpt a statue of Jesus Christ.

@ishowdpeedoff do you just copy that anytime a bot appears?

I honestly find this one confusing because the intro is normally skipped if there is some kind of sketch used as the intro instead, but here there isn't. There's even a cut at 0:26 where it feels like the intro should roll, but it just doesn't.
@@mixttimeyoutubers
I suspect that the reason sometimes channels have their intros and sometimes don't has to do with when they were produced. There was probably some cut off point where they stopped producing videos with the intro, and the videos we do see with the intro are just videos that were produced before that time and are only just now being released. You could also consider that there's an experiment taking place to see if videos perform better with or without the intro.

Just a note from a materials science and engineering major (MSE) about the claim at 4:45 that the particles within a solid are unable to slide past each other: the particles (atoms), or in some cases molecules, that make up a solid are able to move past each other under certain conditions. This can more or less be exemplified in the phenomenon of mechanical deformation (elastic and plastic); there are other MSE principles that allow atoms or molecules within a solid to move past each other, such as diffusion in alloys and viscoelasticity in polymers, but mechanical deformation is probably the easiest to describe. I would encourage you to look up mechanical deformation in solids and stress-strain curves if you're interested in learning more.

I work on baggage handling systems, and I've been told by tsa agents that peanut butter and c4 looks very similar on their scanner machines.
Peanut butter story:
One time I was getting ready to start eating peanut butter straight out of the jar with a spoon while at work - and a coworker told me, "Don't eat too much peanut butter or else you'll get a nose bleed." I looked at him like you are looking at this post right now. Yeeeah right and whatever I said. I ate half the jar, got back to work, and I swear - it wasn't a half an hour and I was in the bathroom trying to stop a crazy nose bleed. Craziest thing about peanut butter I have ever heard - I can't explain the science except maybe something to do with the salt levels but yeah - that 100% happened and I thought it was "nuts" 😂
I believe that's a coincidence
@@jackofalltradeshermes I mean, that's kind of a freak coincidence. I rarely get them.

I’ve gotten through TSA with toothpaste, lotion, lip gloss, face cream, sunblock, makeup, and other gels or creams outside of the 3-1-1 limit, and it’s never been a problem. Maybe PB is considered a liquid bc TSA definitely does not make these same exceptions for that, and they want to drive home that there will also be no exceptions for PB.
3.3 is the max safe allowance. Anything over can be allowed if the officer can articulate that it appears to be around the size limit if it isnt apparent or isn't labeled. It also depends on if the officer is following the rules or being nice to you. Or if you are being nice to them.

As someone who's flown frequently, these terms like "liquid" from the TSA have never really been too confusing to me and I think their provided definition is very SOLID
Maybe It's only an American thing to categorise them differently, but whenever I've gone through security at an airport they define cream, spreads and liquids all under liquid
Yep, the CAA (uk version of tsa) define a liquid as anything that can be spread or poured
haha I get it SOLID

Or maybe you're as dumb as the TSA agents and don't know what a liquid is.
They added creams, gels, and pastes so that pedantic assholes wouldn't constantly go "It's not a liquid it a semi-solid!!!!"
Mat Pat has so many middle names now I wonder if it's fit for a world record
At the very least it's a world theory.
Of course they had to complicate a simple problem, good job TSA
they actually took a complicated problem and simplified it, lol. Would you rather create a new category or classification for every single item that didn't fit squarely into the solid, liquid, gel, categories? And then have to create new rules/polices and limits on every single new category that you created, all at the same time trying to teach this insanely complicated system to bunch of new hires praying they don't screw it up, or that they care enough to not screw it up? Yeah it's just easier to lump things together into already existing categories even if they don't technically make any sense.

Just graduated with a BS in Mechanical Engineering and I'm surprised to see ASTM show up in a Food Theory video LMAO but yeah I always thought of peanut butter as being closer to a non-Newtonian fluid rather than a solid or a liquid. ASTM testing measures are rather specific and used in every industry specifically because arguments like these happened all the time before the organization was created. I trust their tests. In terms of why extra crunchy didn't run, it's because there are more peanuts and solids tend to expand under heat. It might actually be that the extra peanuts are expanding just enough so that it creates friction between the butter and the jar that's holding it. Interesting stuff all around here. Another great video!
