As someone who grew up in the Mediterranean its quite typical to use olive oil instead of butter on bread, i highly suggest that rather than adding ut to your coffee x
The olive oil situation is like a fever dream. It's as if Oleo bought out the company and is now using it to push its products at the detriment of the store.
Where I come from in Greece, it's very popular to dip sourdough bread in olive oil, in most restaurants they give you a basket of sourdough bread to dip. It's enjoyed more by the older people though, when I had it as a child people were surprised because their kids hated olive oil.

Hey Mat, could you do a theory about eating through heartbreak? Why it's sometimes very tough to eat, what the best foods are to cheer you up (is the chocolate and ice cream stereotype based in fact??), or what the best foods are when you quite literally can barely eat anything? How to make sure you get your nutrients then. Asking for a friend
Hey I also had a friend that wanted to know, and soup is really non offensive. There's enough variety to keep everything from getting more depressing, and it's a low effort high comfort munch
Chocolate and strawberries (really any sweet berry). The chocolate thing is based in fact, although exaggerated. Also, don't just eat to cheer up. Get moving. Exercise sucks but it's good to take yer mind off it and after a few weeks actually becomes enjoyable. You do not want to mope around stewing in your thoughts. Get a diversion.
People with symptoms of depression usually experience stomach upsets or nausea causing a loss of appetite. Being humans, our survival instincts tend to take over when we are in an energy deficit and eating anything high in sugar releases dopamine in the brain, hence why chocolate and strawberries are popular choices. You cannot maintain proper nutrients by eating chocolate and strawberries without dietary supplements, and even then they're not a long term solution as you lack the benefits of phytochemicals and other components found in food. As the comment above notes, exercise is by far the best remedy to this. The depression symptoms will subside and you should be able to start eating healthy again.
I love how if some random popular brand says something is healthy and a few articles come out saying it *might* be healthy, people just blindly assume it must be healthy and rush to buy copious amounts of it. 💀
What's killing me is now I see people claiming that beef tallow is healthier than seed oils. Like seriously? Is this how nutrition is gonna be now, just a bunch of fads? Ugh.
@@zootsuiter I mean, Nutrition HAS always been a bunch of fads. if you took a calendar you could use the various crazes in nutrition and dieting as a replacement for the years. the reason is because Nutrition as a science is a relatively new science about something that is somewhat different for everyone. we have only known Vitamins were a thing for about a century. Same could be said for medicine as well, heroin was sold in 1910, marketed as a Non addictive morphine substitute and cough medicine for children. We are not as advanced as we think we are, even today.
When Starbucks announced this the CEO said that he got the idea from coffee shops in Italy and they've already been doing this. I promptly went to google to see if this was a thing. I can't find ANYTHING that says this is or ever has been a thing.
And Starbucks really care about that. It is an overall overwhelmingly successful Marketing. Just look at all the free marketing that people are doing. Many people will even visit their nearest Starbucks to check if they have anything like this. Once inside, most people will either just get it if available or just order a different coffee/coffee-like thing. Some will even bring lots of friends who will also order other things. Is this drink really harmful and will be a basis for lawsuits? Not likely. So yeah, overall Starbucks is winning it. I admire whoever thought and push for this, great marketing as always. Now they have unlock a new level where they don't have to wait for a season or holiday to release a new product.
From what I heard, the Starbucks ceo got the idea after talking to an olive oil company ceo, and even that dude, who's whole business is selling olive oil, thought it was a terrible idea.
Who expected that a health drink marketed & developed by a mega beverage corporation would end up not being as healthy or beneficial for consumption as advertised? Imagine that!
Watching this video at 1.75 times speed is a whole experience. It sounds like Mat is really excited to talk about this and has drank thirteen of them for testing purposes.
I work at Starbucks as my fun job. I had a customer come through the drive-thru last week asking for Oleo coffee. We told her we didn't carry it. I guess she'd tried it in another state and LOVED it. She thought it was so delicious. We're actually pretty happy it hasn't come to our state yet.
Lol. I recently told a barista that I'd liked the Oleato latte so much that I got two in a day (blowing my food budget for the week). She was like, "Oh, you liked it?..." I didn't know at the time that many of the baristas are heavily against the oleato stuff. She must have judged me pretty hard..
Let's be real Matpat, Starbucks is a dessert foods chain. So it's not like anyone was ever going to expect healthy options. You'd be better off going to the froyo shop.
What I don't like about Starbucks is that they don't show you the whole menu. I want something hot and sweet and the menu doesn't give me all the options, so I have to GOOGLE HOW TO ORDER COFFEE. Give us the whole menu! If putting it on the boards isn't feasible, hand out little paper ones! It's way better than whatever the heck you're doing!
A few months ago James Hoffman did a video where he tried their olive oil coffees (I think in Italy), and he seemed pleasantly surprised by the taste. He has sadly removed the video (maybe because Starbucks is union busting at the moment?) But maybe his video on it had a positive note because an Italian Starbucks is probably leagues ahead of any other country’s.
Honestly Starbucks is not common here, there are like 20 in the whole country, and more than half are in Milan. Also, they opened pretty recently, I think the oldest one has opened probably around 2018?
In a video a week or two ago, MorganDrinksCoffee made her own olive oil drinks based on Starbucks offerings and seemed to like some of them. Steaming the oil into the milk seems to work to emulsify it so it’s smooth not greasy. I for one am intrigued by the premise. I also love espresso and tonic water (+almond bitters, mmmmm) and coffee and cola so I’m apparently willing to try any random nonsense people want to do with coffee.
James Hoffman had access to possibly the best case scenario for the quality of baristas and the coffee itself. The people who served him those drinks were way more experienced than any non-specialty coffee chain. There's no way a random Starbucks in the US can match that, especially with how poorly paid/trained/treated the baristas are (Hence the unions).
Meanwhile, DougDoug specifically drinks olive oil straight regularly in order to hit his daily caloric requirements for his diet without having to cook complicated dishes.
That sounds awful. Why couldn't he just use milk. It's very calorie dense and doesn't require any form of torture. (Not as calorie dense as really fatty oil but plenty enough to get your caloric intake)
This reminds me of the "butter coffee" meal replacement diet i was forced on as a child. The only thing i lost was the water weight from the chronic diarrhea that lasted months
Honestly, sugar cane coffee doesn't sound like that bad of an idea, especially if they marketed it in the Caribbean where sugar cane is popular to chew on
Isn't that just using raw sugar to sweeten coffee basically, instead of like corn syrup or some random artificial/alternative natural sweeteners or whatev else?
If you like sugar in your coffee then yes it would be a good idea since sugar cane is just raw, unprocessed sugar. Although the thought of just chomping on a sugar cane while drinking coffee does seem interesting.
Sometimes I'm embarrassed to be a socially awkward weirdo, every once in a while feeling left out or like I'm missing out, but I am glad at times like these to not be obsessed with trends, and thankfully, there's usually a counterculture to trends anyways. Anyway, I'm glad I'm subscribed to Food Theory. Thanks, everybody!
As context, I've been working at Starbucks as a barista for two years now (at two different locations). I went up to Chicago visiting a friend and dared to try the Oleato latte (hot, with oatmilk). Given, this was at the Starbucks Reserve Roastery - the famous one with five floors - and they don't serve much of anything on the regular Starbucks menu. The espresso machines and syrups were also different, so it's fair to say that it basically wasn't a true Starbucks. However, that Oleato coffee was the best tasting thing ever. It didn't have any added syrup (just espresso, oatmilk, and olive oil), and I was genuinely surprised at how tasty and smooth it is. Though I never want to get one from a regular Starbucks, I'd definitely recommend getting it if you're ever in Chicago. Best coffee I've ever had hands down.
You put oily glyphospate oat water in coffee and called it 'milk', I think I can discount your accounting of the taste (with that palate and amount of delusion).
@@voluntaryismistheanswer I don't really have much of a choice with a dairy allergy, but it was pretty tasty! I'm just sharing my thoughts... no need for the hate. It's just coffee lol

Fun factoid: I actually work at a coffee shop (not a starbucks, just a local pokey) that is currently selling olive oil lattes, but we're only allowed to make them hot because of weird texture/taste issues found when trying to do the drink iced. I've tried it, and it actually was not terrible. Definitely not a top pick, but I'd get a small one and share it with a friend if they wanted to try the drink. If u can manage to make it right with the customer's experience with the drink in mind, I honestly think olive oil lattes aren't the worst idea
As a barista, it was insane seeing all the crazy amounts of pushing and hyping up that corporate was doing. And this comes right after the secret oatmeal drinks a couple stores gave to customers for a few months that absolutely flopped. In my store, one of the only ones that did it, every single customer and employee who tried all 3 flavors absolutely hated it
Thank you for making these videos. I appreciate the deep dives of Food Theory. The writers here are brilliant. The delivery of the material is entertaining as well as informational.
I’m a barista and let me just say when this came out we had to have meetings in order to learn how to promote the stuff cause we all knew it was gonna be hard to sell. And it is. We all have tried it and don’t like it so trying to lie to the customers on why they should spend their hard earned money on this is difficult. But we all get a look from supervisors and managers if we aren’t trying our best to sell it when asked. Also something I think people don’t know is it’s meant to be drunken quickly if not it separates, which cause that greenish yellow foam at the top. Also if you are trying to just use it in the vanilla cold foam please remember that the cold foam is heavy cream and 2% milk, so if you’re sensitive to milk already then adding the oil in it is gonna make it worst. Thankfully it’s only one pump of the stuff but highly don’t recommend.
9:44 yes, but also its more nuanced than that, the digestive effect of coffee is not just limited to the caffeine, as the effects are observed in decaffeinated coffee as well, so something in the phyto-compounds is also responsible

The Oleato actually contains a mixture of vanilla sweet cream cold foam which we make by adding one jug of heavy whipping cream, one container of vanilla syrup, and a bit of 2% milk. I am not surprised about how unhealthy the new drink is haha! - A Loyal Theorist/ Starbucks Employee
To add onto that "Mediterranean health/diet thing" I'm going out on a limb and going to say there are a lot more people walking places than the US. I don't see anyone walk anywhere as much as they jump in the car to go 1 or 2 minutes up the road to the next store. When I visit Europe everyone is walking or at least taking public transit.
MatPat..... You already guaranteed I wasn't going to try this when you said olive oil coffee, you didn't need to put together an awesome video that was educational and fun to encourage me not to try this. You had me at OLIVE OIL COFFEE! 😂
Oh yes, our famous "tablespoon of olive oil for breakfast", as an Italian it doesn't sound disgusting at all 🤣 nope, our stomach is particularly sensitive in the morning, doing the olive oil thing feels like beeing nauseous all day
I just tried the drink because Starbucks is so desperate to make it work they were giving away essentially one free drink if you ordered it. So I got one cup of the small latte version and drank it as quickly as possible. Taste was very unremarkable compared to their other items that I usually order.
my friend who works at starbucks got one of these and I said, "you know you're drinking 2 historic laxatives, right?" he laughed and chugged it and 10 minutes later he was holding his stomach going "oh god you were right" lmao
i tried a tester of this in the milan starbucks (the big one that’s a tourist attraction) and it was actually quite nice but it was warm not iced which probably helped. (i do think that getting it in italy is going to be different from america lol)
Doug Doug definitely has the CEO of Starbucks in his basement, and is getting hom to command his coffee army to make olive oil based snacks for Doug's personal consumption.
Ok. The whopperito was a culinary masterpiece! I stand by that! I literally bring it up into conversation at least once a month. And it’s been years! 🤣 love your stuff
When I heard about this drink online I was like WTF? A few days later all the Tiktok videos started rolling in about how people who tried the drink had raging diarrhea 🤣
This reminds me of when I was back in China last year, where a coffee chain is promoting a latte with maotai (basically Chinese vodka) mixed in. From what I heard, it tasted alright. So somehow, mixing coffee with oil is a less appealing idea than mixing coffee with literal vodka.
I tried it because I love cold brew and my curiosity got the best of me. I gotta be honest, it's not the worst thing ever. I wouldn't order it again, but if I received it by mistake and was in too much of a hurry to wait for them to fix me another coffee, I'd take it. It also did not upset my stomach afterwards, but I drink cold brew every day so I may just be somewhat resistant. Also had it in the UK, unsure if it differs from the US recipe in any way.
As an extra virgin myself, I can say that olive oil in coffee is just a bad idea. It’s crazy that a real, living, breathing person had the idea to put the stuff I use in broccoli cheddar noodles in their morning cup of joe

@@madisonwalsh5877 Thanks so much, my friend really appreciates it❤️ she's gonna load up on soups
This is actually something I'd be very interested in seeing!

I also tried it at the reserve just a few weeks ago and I really enjoyed it! It’s definitely not the same in store but worth the try at least once!
