Another category I would have liked to have seen is how long each milk lasts before it spoils, both refrigerated and non-refrigerated. Milk alternatives might not be as econimic as dairy milk at the time of purchase, but if you're someone who doesnt actually use milk all that often, maybe having it last longer is better in the long run.
To quote *doesitgobad* : Shelf-stable soy milk lasts for a few months past the printed date. Refrigerated soy milk, on the other hand, keeps only for about a week past its date. Once you open a bottle or carton, you should finish it within 5 to 10 days, no matter the type.
Another category that would have been pretty important to add imo would be environmental impact during growing and harvest, I've been told almonds take up a lot of water to grow, which is sad because it's the milk alternative that enjoy the most
I can't believe how big He has gotten the giant companies like Geico will sponsor him. It's really cool to look back at how much he has grown as a creator.
I was thinking the same thing. The inclusion was a bit jarring to me and I'm still not convinced that it's not a joke, but I love this channel coming so far to be able to quote everyones favorite gecko 😂
@@himuka98 Here in Brazil as well. I didn't even know you could drink coconut milk, my mother always told me not to. But makes sense since it's too expensive for drinking.
Bruh this editing, this is literally insane, the amount of work that goes into editing, researching, and writing on these episodes is insane, Kutos to yall
my niece is lactose intolerance, so I've been experiencing with cooking and baking with different milks, and let me tell you there is more then just minor differences. texture, density, bake time, flavor changes. it all makes a huge difference. I don't like cooking with almond milk as the almond flavor will come through real strong. oat is great for baking cookies and cakes. coconut milk is fun for coconut flavored things, but using it as a stock for soups and curry is the way to go. if you want to make Alfredo sauce, I found the best is to use the Lactose free milk. it's real milk just the Lactae removed and it works so good for Mac n cheese and Alfredo. pair it with vegan parm and you are set
I love homemade oatmilk for my alfredo sauce. I wasnsuper delighted at how creamy it turned out. I like to blend my own oats for milk because it works out to be cheaper overall and I only make the am of oat juice that I need lol
I have noticed rice milk produces very similar texture but a lighter sweeter taste so if you like that I reccomend it especially in baking. same with rice flour. my friend is gluten free and the biggest difference between regular flour and brown rice flouur is it's grainier and holds moisture better so the combination of it with rice or regular milk makes really good cakes
I’m lactose intolerant and love baking & cooking and i just always use lactose free. Unless it say butter milk & idk a good alternative but it doesn’t effect me really so might not have the find one. The only option of these in the video i use to drink is almond since the rest is either bad taste or weird texture. Especially soy & oat. And flavored milk besides chocolate 😡😡
As someone who is lactose intolerant this has been very helpful. I don't drink any kind of milk, that being cows milk or any other kind, just straight up. Usually I only have milk with cereal and it's usually almond milk because I personally like it and I have no objections for buying it.
Same here. Well, I mean for the most part. I love dairy milk, but the idea of us humans drinking. It has kind of started to seem bizarre to me lmao the more I think about it. Regardless, though I love dairy byproducts like cheese and cream cheese. It’s harder to find those without lactose :(
the best option to me has been lactose free milk which is just cow milk(moo juice) with lactose removed. It tastes exactly the same and the texture is also very similar without any of the bloating. It’s honestly been kinda life changing
An important reason that a lot of people even choose to drink non dairy milk is it's environmental impact, which from what I've read Oat is the best and rice and almond are the worst due to how much water rice and almonds need to grow
Rice is a staple food and 90% of it is grown and consumed in Asia and nearly third of it is being wasted. We can't change the amount of rice being grown, but we can use it in as many ways as possible to avoid that wastage
I've typically used coconut milk for thai and other southeast-asian dishes - its flavor (while not like milk at all) typically suites that flavor profile quite well. It might not serve as a milk ALTERNATIVE, but it does function just fine when used in the right context.
What they used in the video is not the same thing as the cooking coconut milk that is used in Asia. There are 2 types of coconut milk. 100% Coconut milk that is meant for cooking and coconut milk drink or beverage which is diluted coconut milk so that you can drink it.
I only buy unsweetened Silk brand coconut milk🥛to drink as it doesn't taste like water. It has a rich delicious flavor and never gets lumpy out of the carton.
I think MatPat is the only RUclipsr that can run 4 channels and upload amazing content while uploading weekly.Keep up the amazing content MatPat!(with his team by he side helping make a amazing video)
I settled on oat milk as my favorite due to the good taste but more so because it has one of the lowest environmental impacts. I don’t need milk to fill nutritional gaps so that matters more to me. Thanks for the thorough research! 🙌🏻
This entirely. Oat milk requires the least amount of water to produce out of all the alternative milks. And if you live in an area that grows grain, it's very local and requires minimal transportation. The flavour, as seen in this video and in my opinion, is the most universally usable. I drink dairy alternatives by choice, and I don't go out of my way to convince others, but I hear the same story: "they all taste awful" I suggest oat milk and they come back saying it's great. I find it's the easiest one for dairy drinkers to transition to. Plus in my area, the oat milk is the same price as all the other alternatives.
Here's an interesting piece of information I know. "Raw milk", that is unprocessed milk straight from the animal, don't cause discomfort for lactose intolerant people. If you're lactose intolerant, you can drink it no problem. The reason the milk you buy in stores is problematic has to do with the pasteurization process.
@@ferretzim8694 That is absolutely false. It is a bogus claim made by companies that sell raw milk and various "natural medicine" sites, but is demonstrably false. Studies by both the FDA and Stanford University of Medicine have found that there is literally no difference between raw milk and pasteurized milk when it comes to the impact they have on people with lactose intolerance, as they contain the same amount of lactose and the bacteria present in the raw milk do not aid in breaking it down in any meaningful way. At best, the claims made by raw milk sellers are backed by anecdotal claims by customers that either believed themselves to be lactose intolerant even though they aren't, or people that are lactose intolerant but are experiencing a placebo effect due to the claims made by the raw milk sellers. Please stop spreading misinformation. It can legitimately cause harm.
Of everything I was expecting to see in this video, an Ash face reveal was definitely not one of them! But I'm so happy to know that they now feel comfortable enough with the Theorist crew and fans to decide to show themselves on camera! I now really hope that we'll get to hear some Witty Banter about this experience on the next GTLive!
There is an important test missing that was mentioned early in the video: How well each milk pairs with cereal. My favourite of all of these for drinking is oat milk, but in my experience it is terrible for cereal - it just does not absorb well.
I eat a lot of granolas and porridge and hate the taste of cow milk. I love my oat milk because it blends in but does add more flavour and sweetness. I don't like most "desert for breakfast" cereals as I like to call them.
Chobani Oat is the most amazing I’ve seen!! I eat cereal on an almost daily basis and when I started getting sick drinking cow milk I was scared to try alts bc of how they pair with cereal. I’ve tried three different brands of oat milk and chobani oat is the best in my personal experience. If you don’t mind the taste of Pea milk Thts okay too. But I hate the way it tastes.
I'm honestly surprised there wasn't even a comment on how long these alternatives last. I get oat milk SPECIFICALLY because of how much longer it lasts than dairy milk does. I cant finish a half gallon by myself of normal milk but i can with oat milk because where I'm at the best by date is ~3x longer.
Yeah. Milk says "once opened, consume within 3 days". There's no way the four of us can consume such a big bottle that fast. We probably could if we drank it rather than just using it in our cereal and on our tea, but we don't. Meanwhile, Oatly milk says "once opened, consume within 5 days." Way longer. Plus, before you open it, Oatly milk can last months.
You forgot environmental impact, like how much land and water is needed to grow, how long and hard to grow etc, but make it simple oat is probably the best based on enviromental
Yeah, I saw an article about that topic once. Oat and soy were the top two, IIRC. All plant-based milks did far better on environmental measures than cow milk.
@@kane2742 yes the plowed fields requiring thousands of gallons of fuel, fertilizer and pesticides with excessive water usage are far better than pastures which arnt able to support crop farming (like half the country’s non mountainous land) along with the fact that unlike people cows can eat the whole plant which gives us access to far more of the energy each acre of crops yield. Fun fact the farming operations in California use 80% of the water used by the entire state. Not to mention the fertilizer and pesticide runoff and the algae blooms those cause along with lasting effects on the environment.
Very interesting question but it's hard to find where to even start with this. As someone said below, farms need lots of water and pesticides. But at the same time, cows do need feed and that also affects the environment. Then there's the debate whether it's better to farm food or raise animals and exploit them, whether farming is good because of how it'll affect the land and air, etc. Really interesting topic.
@@walter3934 cows are able to live their entire life on pastures eating grass and while it’s not always feasible to keep them on pasture year round especially in colder climates it still offsets feed requirements but beyond that cattle and other ruminant mammals can extract energy from farming waste we can’t eat such as plant stalks or fruits/veggies that didn’t make it past quality control due to pest damage or other things. The important thing to note here is that half the land in America isn’t suitable for sustainably farming crops but has no issues growing grass which you can then just cut and put in storage bunkers where it’s turned into silage which can make up the bulk of what cattle eat. That’s what a lot of dairy farmers do already. Factory farming of animals is obviously worse for the animal but it’s hard to say if it’s significantly worse for the environment as yes now you require more feed to support your operation but you take up significantly less space and you get other offsets like tones of manure which can be used as a natural fertilizer or to produce energy. Personally I think that even if it ends up being better for the environment factory farming has moral issues that can’t be overcome chief among them being the animal deserves a decent life without the excessive suffering that comes with being locked up in a pen for its entire life. There really isn’t an easy answer here as for what’s best for humans or the planet and no matter your views on eating meat short of foraging for berries it’s impossible to eat without the death of millions of animals be it cattle on ranches or rodents and birds killed by plows and pesticides.
In parts of Asia, soy milk is actually cheaper than cow milk. It also tastes *much* richer and stronger than what you get in American grocery stores, which have been specifically processed to remove the "bean" taste.
@@JamesLyda dude, soy-boy propaganda isn’t really something to be including in a more scientific setting. Go be an alpha male in the corner, and let us drink soy. I don’t even drink soy and I’m mad.
As someone who is both lactose intolerant and allergic to both soy and almonds, I can rest easy now knowing I've been making the best choice for myself all along with my oat milk purchases
@@jojomojo508 You know people can be allergic to pretty much everything right? Also who are you to try to say what they are or are not allergic to when they are telling you others wise?
As a person allergic to dairy, this was interesting. I had no idea there was cashew or pea milk. Never saw them here. Might be something to test. I guess they haven't gotten popular or big enough to get put in the grocery stores in smaller towns. And NO not lactose intolerant... allergic, as in my tongue and throat burns, my lips get puffy and I have some difficulty breathing. The number of times I tried to ask if a dish had dairy getting told 'it's just a tummy hurt, they make pills for that' when trying to get something while I'm out is astounding.
I was allergic to dairy, yes was… I somehow grew out of it, growing up I always had the same problem as you with people thinking I meant intolerance and it was the most annoying thing ever, we always drank rice milk at my house and it wasn’t that bad, I actually prefer the taste of it to normal milk, what did you have growing up or what do you have now?
Back when I was in school, there was a boy in my class who was severely allergic to dairy. We all had to be super careful cause even getting a little bit of traces on him would make him go into allergic shock. Eating a cookie with milk in it could've killed him. Didn't know there was also less severe versions of dairy allergy like yours though.
We actually use pea milk for the coffee at my job. You can store it for long times in room temperature and even though it doesn't foam as well it foams good enough. Is it milk protein allergy? Dairy allergy is such a bad term that is sometimes used for it, so confusing. Most people i know that have it says milk protein allergy since it makes it easier to understand.
I hate all kinds of milk but i still drink it cause its has fats, i read the nutritional label on the back occasionally and it always bothered me how much grams of cholestorol it had, now that i drink cashew milk i hate the taste of milk even more, thank you matpat
As someone on an intermittent fasting diet, and can't eat until noon; and didn't eat breakfast as a teenager; I doubt it. Actually that was one of the things that came up when I was looking at starting interment fasting. From a weight loss perspective, it doesn't seem to matter when you eat your food, either as one or two big meals or six small meals throughout the day, only matters how much you're eating throughout the day. However, there are some advantages of restricting the time window of when you can eat. It improves insulin sensitivity, which can help decrease your risk of type 2 diabetes. You're also training your body not to eat during certain times so your body stops producing those hunger hormones when you are fast. Granted it does take about a month for your body to adjust, and it can be difficult those first few weeks.
I'm lactose intolerant, and I'll blankly state, Soy is my GO TO, for everything, 'cause its so much more like milk I even realized that Lactose was my problem, because I went over to Soy, for the taste, and stopped having pains
@Shorts From The Pit hahh don't have to :P I feel like it enhances the flavor of everything else its mixed with :P so I would actually rather have soy, which is nice when I need it XD
For me, nothing beats the taste of freshly made soy milk. Having fresh soy milk for the first time, especially if you've only had the supermarket stuff in the past, is like having some really good, freshly made coffee for the first time after only having tried bad instant coffee. The taste is indescribably good.
How do you make yours? For some reason I’m not allergic to soy, but I am allergic to all soy milk found at the store. I think it could be a preservative issue since I do have a lot of allergies but soy itself is not one of them. I think making soy milk at home might be fun to try!
@@honeybloom8533 I make soy milk every week and it’s super easy! I got a soy milk maker years ago from Amazon. All I do is soak 1 cup of dried soybeans overnight in some water, then the next morning I drain them, put them in the maker, fill with water to the line, push the button, and in less than an hour I have fresh, piping hot soy milk! :) It’s dirt cheap, tastes amazing, has no preservatives, and lasts about a week in a bottle or jar in the fridge! Not that it ever sits around that long before I drink it all. 😊
I want to thank Team Theorist. I've been using almond milk for years, but thanks to this vid, I tried soy milk and it is SO much better. I only used almond to cook, but I can actually drink soy.
The number 3 spot is not bad! For the longest time before I was drinking soy milk. Then years on down the line when almond milk became more readily available I started using it for my breakfast shakes, frappes etc. Still drink regular milk on occasion and prefer using it for baking/cooking. It's been a long time since I've last drank soy milk. But it's still really good in my book. Especially Silk's soy eggnog come the holidays! Which I really miss because for some reason my Wal-Mart doesn't carry it anymore for years now 😭!
When it comes to cost, dairy milk is heavily subsidized. If almond or soy milk was subsidized just as much, they'd probably be around the same cost or cheaper than what dairy is currently
However they're just as bad for the environment and take up more land so that would probably never happen. Before you tell me it's not bad for the environment allow me to explain. The amount of trees needed to grow enough to supply the country, takes up so much water that is insane, and since they are primarily grown in California this is an issue. Add that to the over stress it puts on the bee population and you've got even bigger issues. Soy is also a massive water hog, and both take more acreage than any dairy farm every thought of needing.
My kids and I love using almond milk for our smoothies specifically BECAUSE it doesn't froth well lol we hate the foamy layer on top after we blend regular milk. Also, I can usually find almond milk on a good sale or rebate! I haven't tried oatmilk yet and it's been decades since I've had soymilk, so maybe we'll give those a go soon 😊 thanks for the awesome video, great research guys!
SO, I'm curious how these would stack up against a lactose-free dairy milk like Lactaid. That has been my go to since becoming more lactose intolerant, and I gotta say, for the milk taste alone, it beats all the other alternatives I've tried.
this is what we give my 15-month-old son. He can still get whole milk, without the issue of lactose, and I'm uncomfortable giving him so much soy because of the high estrogen amounts.
If anyone is up for it, I recommend watching a video on RUclips called "Dairy is Scary" by Erin Janus. It's only 5 minutes long and it might give some info about dairy. Wishing everyone agreat day
I buy mine from a farm down the road.. fresh from the tank, sometimes it's still warm. It's rich and creamy and goes good a a supplement for my diet and workout routine. 👍
As a person who has not been able to drink milk for a LONG time now due to discovering I have eoe (eosinophilic esophagitis) which makes my throat more sensitive to allergies (the eosinophilic part), this is pretty accurate depiction of fake milk.
For price, milk likely has a foot up because a LOT of grocery stores will sell milk for a loss to bring customers in to shop. Milk wars have occurred, where places like Wal-mart will drop their milk prices to bring in customers. A lot of people will shop where milk is cheapest, especially during the school season where lots of cereal is eaten. Milk alternatives are seldom, if ever, sold at a loss. Next time you walk into wal-mart, ask the dairy clerk to scan a jug of milk and see how much of a loss that jug is selling for. I htink it was somewhere around 30% when I last worked there. This is also why convenient stores sell milk for almost double the price, but alternatives are around the same price. They can not afford the several dollars loss on the sale.
@@dieptrieu6564 The only part harder about making plant milk is the conversion of raw material into milk. For cow milk, you have to take care of cattle, feed them (and grow that food), and milk each cow individually. The only other reason cow milk is cheaper is due to the economics of scale since dairy is a large established industry compared to alternative milks.
@@dieptrieu6564 well "easy" as in there's less human involvement, sure; but I'd argue raising and milking cattle while also keeping them all producing milk is pretty difficult and expensive. it's cheaper in stores bc of what OP has stated from their experience with supermarkets, and also because the industry has been around way longer and has had the time and resources to find cost effective work arounds (which often involves further abuse and exploitation of the animals & employees) like MatPat mentioned with soy & oat milk being cheaper than pea milk
or cuz milk alternatives are just over priced like most of these alternative stuff that are not great nutriently. Just buy normal milk, just looking at this video should be enough to show that normal milk is cheaper and healther.
Another factor you didn’t consider: environmental impact. From what I’ve heard almond milk is horrible due to how much water is needed. Cow milk also has a lot of overhead & resources. I wonder what the best pick is in that regard. Give Chidi an option so he doesn’t go to the bad place ;)
Yeah honestly surprised froth was up there but not environmental impact. I’m guessing that would have taken too much time as that would be material for a video itself.
Dairy farmers have been failing as he said so while almond milk takes more water than other alternatives it is nowhere near the amount of water animal milk uses. The cows need to drink water we all know that but one overlooked factor is the plants the animal is eating. If your dairy cows are grass fed which less than 5% are than this would still be an issue since it’s more convenient to grow your own grass as a farmer than pick up surrounding grass. Don’t take my word on that 5% but I’m talking about dairy cows I know cows raised for meat alone have 10% be grass fed.
While I don't disagree with this analysis, isn't cow's milk heavily subsidized too? Also, for water usage (to make a gallon of milk) I think pea/oat are the best, which is important for future water conservation and even overall environmental impact.
@@Disharm0ny That's my major consideration for milk alternatives as well. I really liked the taste of oat milk, but the one time I bought a carton of it, it had a noticeable grittiness to it, like the fibre hadn't been properly filtered out.
@@Disharm0ny That's a great point, though possibly the pea milks have the better protein to water usage ratio, I wonder if someone has done an analysis
yeah, I wish they had actually cover that in this video. Like, my personal favorite non-dairy milk is almond, but I don't really drink it anymore because so much water is wasted when actually even growing the almonds themselves...
I tried many types of milk as a coffee additive. Currently almond, oat and soy milks are out due to their strong flavor taking over the coffee's presense. Diluted coconut milks are the best, but still not on-par with cow milk.
The info I really want (especially when comparing prices) is how long the milk will last in the fridge after opening. I switched from dairy to oat milk because dairy would always go bad before I can use it. Oat, on the other hand, will last in the fridge for almost double the amount of time as dairy. This makes it a lot less expensive overall because I don't have to pour half of the tub out and buy a new one every time I decide to bake a cake on a whim
@@TharzZzDunN some people just dont use enough milk, and/or live by themselves. I could go out and buy a single quart of milk and it will absolutely go bad before i use it all, its just too much milk for how short the shelf life is after you open it. If you dont religiously eat cereal or live with multiple people then you can easily struggle to use up milk before it goes bad. in an ideal world an opened jug of milk would last an entire month before it sours, this is not an ideal world.
@@Draganot1 it's such a pain. I know I would go between 2 and 4 pints since some weeks I used up the 4 pints and sometimes I wouldn't finish the 2 pints. Getting rid of milk is rid6
Did anyone else notice how, “the definitive guide to the best milk alternatives on the market,” (at 17:48) put oat milk in first place? I thought that was an odd error.
My favorites: rice/hazelnut and rice/coconut. The rice adds sweetness and the nuts add creaminess and flavor. Luckily my local supermarket chain has their own house brand of these drinks so they are cheap and readily available. Score! BTW, these two drinks mix great with vodka if you like that kind of thing.
First of all, Love the video, love pretty much all the videos from your channels But I did want to point out your chart from ~ 17:49 swapped the soy milk and oat milk's places Making oat take first over soy, differing from what was said in the video And again, Love your stuff, hope all of Team Theorist is doing great=D
Same, it really bugged me to see the results being swapped so I was about to comment but saw this, I hope they fix it, gonna provide mom with soy milk now because of her heart problems or almond if she wants to cut some cals.
it would be interesting to know wich of them is the most "environment frienly", because i had been told that soy needs a lot of land and clean water to produce than perhaps, oat
I have heard otherwise from soy milk but I will be researching for it ;) At the end of the day dairy milk is the environentally worst if we were to compare it and aslong as you pick a milk alternative it would be better off
I have seen some other video from ASAP science saying that Oat milk would the most environmentally friendly.. I'm sure a lot has changed by now, but it can still be a good source of info Here's the link to the video: ruclips.net/video/8ZiD2W8vSXE/видео.html
Me too.... I have been trying milk alternatives for 2months now, trying to find one that tastes better because I love milk, I atleast had a cup daily my entire life
I'm drinking and baking with plant-based milks since I'm a little child. Because my mom lives vegan, and yeah, even now my dad and I only use soy, rice and oat milks and it is just as good for baking, or making a coffee in my dad's case. Nice seeing this beeg research and all of ma favorite YT team test it. Very cool video. Actually, my dad's friend only likes cow milk so sometimes we have that at home, but we always get rid of it as fast as we can before it spoils. xD

Hemp milk is a good source of Omega 3 protein. Hemp is Low Water Use-- especially in cooler rainy areas. Hemp grows in many climates, soil/mix/mediums, marginal land, greenhouse and/or hydroponic hemp grows easily from any combination of processes of at least 1 step: seed, transplant, cutting & clone.
I tried it once but it tasted bad and didn't foam. Maybe best to keep it as a protein extract product and fibre crop, but each to their own. As long as it's not an animal's milk, it's a good milk.
Hemp destroys the soil that it's grown in by sucking all of the nutrients out of it. While it might be fine in small amounts, growing at large scale is not ideal.
@@tohstygohstygal Hemp does the opposite of your claim. It improves soil quality. That’s why farmers often plant hemp in their soil in preparation for a different crop to be planted. Even if it didn’t work this way we could grow it in hydroponic solutions, rendering soil obsolete.
Since I am Lactose intolerant, I had to find a cheap af alternative to the 'moo juice'. @@cga7701 Yeah same, idk why but something about Soy milk just stuck out to me and I rooted for it despite not only never trying it but never trying any milk alternatives, it's kinda like how so many Jedi betrayed the order to follow Revan into the Mandalorian wars despite Revan going completely against the order and it's code
Look into A2 milk. Many, many people who felt they were lactose-intolerant have reported being able to drink A2 milk and not experience the same problems.
It feels like boomers are watching this channel, but it's millennials who are supposed to be their clients now, feels weird that millennials are supposed to be the super consumers now.
Plenty of people have the numbers this channel does but with more "risky" content. So it's less about doing well and more about being a safe option for advertising.
I’ve had a lot of soy milk over the years because my mom had to go gluten and dairy free due to food sensitivities, but I think cashew milk has one of the best tastes and textures. I’ve tried pretty much all of these and I would say that soy is a good whole milk alternative, but it’s best to have it in moderation as it gets very heavy very fast. Cashew milk is one of the few that I’ve never had any problems with, I hope they start putting it in more stores soon.
Alright, so now we know the best non-milk milk. Now we need a part 2 though, discussing which "regular" milk is the best! Will it be a slam dunk for the good old cows are will alternatives like goat milk actually be able to compare?
Oat milk is good and all, but... Buckwheat milk. I don't know if US and other western countries even consider buckwheat food like we are. The taste of "milk" is much more unique and cooler imo.
I would have added “Ease of DIY” because Oat is very easy to make, and Cashew is pretty easy. And, in Baking, Coconut is useful when the coconut cream is separated. It’s so thicker While it’s not a “milk”, aquafaba-the juice from cooking chickpeas-might be useful for frothing, since it can be used to make meringue.
I'm so glad that soymilk came out on top because I love soymilk and have been drinking it all my life due to a former dairy allergy. Once the allergy was gone, I tried cow milk and hated it, so great job soy milk👏
I’m Irish and statistically I’m not lactose intolerant but even I feel its weird how much milk as a stand alone product is pushed. It seems more like an ingredient. It would be like pushing flour as an important part of your breakfast.
I found this extremely interesting as I am currently exploring non dairy options. I can't have Almond because I'm allergic, I used soy for a while,. It I have a mild allergy and too much will have an adverse effect. I drank cashew for a while but started breaking out into hives when I found the brands I drank were made with almond milk. I liked ripple (pea) but it's too expensive in the amounts that I drink it. Oat is what I'm drinking now, and that seems to be working well. Mostly using it to mix protein shakes.
If you drink a lot, fast, it may be worth it to make your own oat milk. It's super easy and for $5 of oats you can be set for weeks to months. It only lasts a few days though, since there's no stabalizers in it.
Ever since I tasted non-dairy milk, for more than a few months, I was unable to get back to dairy milk because of its taste and the bad stomach feeling afterwards. But I'm unable to decide on just one milk alternative. I used to like Soy-Rice-Drink, but IDK if it was me getting older or them changing the recipe slightly, it didn't taste (only by itself) as good as it used to be.
I would have loved to see the visuals of all the tests. I really appreciate the video, it was very informative. However, I kept wondering what do the cupcakes look like or I would've like to see the foam.
Chocolate versions of these are super different to their plain counterparts.a friend of mine threw a milk party once and it was a lot of different experiences
Sounds unhealthy. Must add extra sugar too because cocoa would be bitter. Just try different brands for taste and try to figure out how watered down they are from the label to not just have expensive water.
Yay! I’ve been buying soy and oat forever! I use soy for nutrition, and oat for flavor. So soy goes into savory dishes and smoothies, and oat goes into cereal and hot chocolate.
While I drink normal whole milk, there have been times when I've tried milk alternatives. Soy milk actually makes me sick, so I can't consume it. It also never really tasted that good to me as milk, despite me loving soy sauce and tofu. Almond milk...just...no... While it doesn't make me sick, the texture is weird, and the taste makes it worse. It's weird, cause I love almonds, so I figured I'd like almond milk. Oat milk, on the other hand was super delicious and felt like the perfect milk alternative for me, if I ever need to drop regular milk for whatever reason. Ironically, I thought I'd hate oat milk since I'm not a huge fan of oatmeal. I guess I figured it'd be like that, but nope. Turned out to be just right. Anyways, great video.
I'm allergic to soy milk. Soy is a plant that needs careful consideration when put into one's diet. Asian cultures usually ferment it. They know from experience how to make it viable as a food for many people - but soy milk was never something that came out of it, for a reason.
@@svr5423 because Asian cultures don’t really drink milk if I’m remembering right I think Most Asians are lactose because milk is something they didn’t really have in their dishes
@@theblackoutexplorer2658 you are right that milk is rarely consumed in most parts of asia. But would assume that it would make it easier for a drink made from soy beans that doesn't affect lactose intolerant people to become popular - if it were a good idea. In contrast, there is little incentive to replace milk with something else (that has limited applicability) in western cultures.
Nice to see some Cashew representation. As someone who drinks copious amounts of milk and performed my own research into alternatives, I think it absolutely blows the other options out of the water. Alone, it tastes really good with an excellent texture and has a flavour profile that doesn't conflict with my cereal. In some ways, I actually like it better than dairy - which I can't say about any of the other alternatives except one niche use-case: coconut milk is really bad - unless you use it for baking and desserts! Depending on the recipe, it can even be better than the real stuff.
Have you considered hemp milk? IMO hands down the best. And since it’s hemp which is a weed it uses a lot less water to actually grow. And it has omegas.
@@FukaiKokoro I think, from that perspective, oat milk is probably better since oat crops require less water than hemp. Hemp actually takes a lot of water to grow compared to grain crops, but it's true that it's still much better than growing nuts.
fun fact! i am actually allergic to casein. as a toddler i would drink about a gallon of milk a day and around 8 years old i developed really intense stomach pain. i was tested for celiac, lactose intolerance and many other things all coming back negative. i was diagnosed with stomach migraines after 5 years of doctors visits. didn’t find out until i was 15 that it was casein causing the problem
Coconut milk feels like its own thing. It's great when it's used specifically for the coconut flavor and creaminess, but those unique characteristics mean that it probably doesn't make much sense to substitute for cow milk. Coconut based deserts, drinks, and other sorts of food can be quite tasty, although they can certainly be unhealthy and in some cases loaded with added sugar (which contributes to the taste). Sweet Chinese style coconut milk drinks were one of my favorite things to drink as a kid, although these days I don't drink them as much for health reasons. In terms of baking, I'm somewhat curious how the milks would compare to water and perhaps sugar water as controls. That would help to understand how much the ingredients themselves are actually contributing to the recipe, I feel. My personal favorite milk to drink would be oat milk, but it's definitely problematic as a coffee additive since it takes away from the flavor of the bean itself due to its oaty flavor. For dark roasts though, the oat flavor could also be considered a plus, potentially, depending on what you're going for. It's actually the reason I enjoy drinking it straight. That said, being allergic to soy, peas, and cashews do mean that I haven't really been able to drink that many milk alternatives.
my speciality coffee shop swears by oat. In the UK high end coffee scene it's neck and neck between oatily and minor figures, generally seen as equal but one is superior foam and texture and the other has superior flavour, so it ends up being the barristas preference.
Minor figures is tasty stuff. It's available online in Japan as well, although I often end up drinking it straight before I can use it on anything else.
"For health reasons" being the added sugar, or to avoid the coconut milk itself? Cus coconut milk, unless you're allergic, is one of the best drinks you can have for your health.
What they used in the video is not the same thing as the cooking coconut milk that is used in Asia. There are 2 types of coconut milk. 100% Coconut milk that is meant for cooking and coconut milk drink or beverage which is diluted coconut milk meant for drinking.

Hey Matt Pat could you please try and make a food theory about how many breadsticks you would have to eat at Olive Garden to actually make the restaurant go out of business
Not lactose intolerant I just voluntarily choose non-dairy milk. There are some brands that are better than others, but I highly recommend oat milk if oats are a common crop to your area. Oat milk uses a very small amount of water even compared to coconut and especially almond and soy. To my experience it's the most mild and actually enjoyable of the alternatives as well as being very eco friendly.
I wish environmental impact was also discussed, seeing as that is an important factor for a lot of people who switch over to plant-based milks. Additionally, delving into that side of things would have given more context for the price comparison - right now there are a lot of subsidies that dairy producers can take advantage of but that is not the case for the plant-based alternatives. I would really love to watch a video exploring these topics in relation to more environmentally sustainable food :)
This would immediately tank Almond to near bottom. The water impact alone, especially growing them in Cali is a straight up crime. But nuts in general I don't think would score well here. I can't imagine it will help coconut move up much, though. I would also like to see the price adjusted for without subsidies, in the interest of fairness.
Does it even make a real big difference ? I mean compared to heating your appartment or using an AC or something else that a person does. But here are the numbers of a source I found for Germany. 1 Litre of milk is calculated in Europe with arround 1,2 KG of CO2. That means for me I use about 1 litre per week. it is arround 68 KG CO2 per year. Rice. 0,9 KG CO2 Soy. 0,9 KG CO2 Almond. 0,7 KG CO2 Oat. 0,6 KG CO2
as a lactose intolerant vegetarian this was a very intriguing video for me to watch. i still eat dairy but i try to keep my "milk" plant based. but i still sometimes just drink lactose free milk 🤷🏻♀️. maybe a video comparing lactose free milk to regular milk? see if it really holds up to the real thing? idk just an idea
I remember trying almond milk before since my dad is lactose intolerant and I actually thought it was pretty good, it was strange at first because it was just a bit off from regular milk, but I got used to it quickly.
This is really funny. I'm recovering from the first time throwing up from lactose intolerance (it decided to level up when I didn't have it accidentally for a few weeks, then had it for every meal yesterday xD) This was perfectly timed. Also lactaid is magic. Hope you all are having a good day ^^
Oat brings an extra layer of taste when paired with coffee, also overall brings a delightful earthiness to some dishes that are on the more sweet side that I've experienced.
Truth be told. Almond milk is like a Kombucha or whatever this drink called. A very narrow specific taste which either makes you say I love it or get it out from me.
to be fair, it really just depends on if you like the taste of almonds so much you would eat them with every meal. i hate almonds, therefore hate almond milk. 🤷

That's true!
To quote *doesitgobad* : Shelf-stable soy milk lasts for a few months past the printed date. Refrigerated soy milk, on the other hand, keeps only for about a week past its date. Once you open a bottle or carton, you should finish it within 5 to 10 days, no matter the type.
Definitely lasts longer than dairy milk
Oat milk seems to last 9 months or soon shelf
Another category that would have been pretty important to add imo would be environmental impact during growing and harvest, I've been told almonds take up a lot of water to grow, which is sad because it's the milk alternative that enjoy the most

it all makes a huge difference. I don't like cooking with almond milk as the almond flavor will come through real strong. oat is great for baking cookies and cakes. coconut milk is fun for coconut flavored things, but using it as a stock for soups and curry is the way to go.

As a fellow lactose intolerant, I can say with certainty, that I do not care and will chug the moo juice any day of the week.
I drink and use lactaid milk, fairlife, and almond milk
the best option to me has been lactose free milk which is just cow milk(moo juice) with lactose removed.

Milk made out of cereal does not mix well with cereal. Interesting.
Chobani Oat is the most amazing I’ve seen!! I eat cereal on an almost daily basis and when I started getting sick drinking cow milk I was scared to try alts bc of how they pair with cereal. I have had the same experience, the more creamy milk alternatives are worse for cereal than the lighter ones, like rice milk
Almond milk works great with cereal
I'm honestly surprised there wasn't even a comment on how long these alternatives last. I get oat milk SPECIFICALLY because of how much longer it lasts than dairy milk does. I cant finish a half gallon by myself of normal milk but i can with oat milk because where I'm at the best by date is ~3x longer.
That makes sense

Yeah, I saw an article about that topic once. Oat and soy were the top two, IIRC. All plant-based milks did far better on environmental measures than cow milk.
I can't have oat milk though because it gives me reflux so I'll probably have no milk at all.

New food theory idea: Is breakfast actually the most important meal?
It's a just fake thing lol, used to promote some cereal brand it not true
It’s important for adolescents, but if you’re an adult then you don’t have to eat breakfast if you don’t want to
As someone on an intermittent fasting diet, and can't eat until noon; and didn't eat breakfast as a teenager; I doubt it.
Depends on what it's supposed to be important for.

Nutritional value?
Mental wellbeing?

It's been a long time since I've last drank soy milk. But it's still really good in my book. Especially Silk's soy eggnog come the holidays! Which I really miss because for some reason my Wal-Mart doesn't carry it anymore for years now 😭!
When it comes to cost, dairy milk is heavily subsidized. If almond or soy milk was subsidized just as much, they'd probably be around the same cost or cheaper than what dairy is currently
Yep. If it wasn't for government subsidies, stuff like meat and dairy would be WAY more expensive than it is now.
@@tecnapurin can't be more than double the price
Soy is enormously subsidized. Like to ridiculous degrees.
@@dunhillsupramk3 it was 4-6 $ per gallon, but that was a long time ago, not in the dairy bus anymore.
Well Lactaid isn’t a milk alternative. It’s just milk.
this is what we give my 15-month-old son. He can still get whole milk, without the issue of lactose, and I'm uncomfortable giving him so much soy because of the high estrogen amounts.

I mean making dairy milk is just way easier than any plant milk. So of course it gonna be cheaper.
@@dieptrieu6564 good job ignoring the entire comment
Thanks for this... Both chidi and environmental impact needed to be mentioned
While almond requires more water in its production than other milk alternatives, it uses WAY less water than the production of cow milk.
I’m pretty sure it’s oat milk is best regarding water usage
My favorite “milk” is pistachio milk. I also love cashew milk. When it comes to drinking it, that is, and to use in things to drink
While I don't disagree with this analysis, isn't cow's milk heavily subsidized too? Also, for water usage (to make a gallon of milk) I think pea/oat are the best, which is important for future water conservation and even overall environmental impact.
Oat milk has by far the lowest water and land usage of any of the plant milks, which easily pushes it into first place in my opinion.
@@Disharm0ny That's my major consideration for milk alternatives as well. I really liked the taste of oat milk, but the one time I bought a carton of it, it had a noticeable grittiness to it, like the fibre hadn't been properly filtered out.
@@Levian-Durai try a different brand maybe, i have no issues with Planet Oat, i do get the extra creamy one though.
@@Disharm0ny That's a great point, though possibly the pea milks have the better protein to water usage ratio, I wonder if someone has done an analysis

@@ramonandrajo6348 too much of anything can be unhealthy
The info I really want (especially when comparing prices) is how long the milk will last in the fridge after opening. I switched from dairy to oat milk because dairy would always go bad before I can use it. Oat, on the other hand, will last in the fridge for almost double the amount of time as dairy. This makes it a lot less expensive overall because I don't have to pour half of the tub out and buy a new one every time I decide to bake a cake on a whim
Have you tried changing your eating habits or maybe buying smaller containers?
@@TharzZzDunN some people just dont use enough milk, and/or live by themselves. I could go out and buy a single quart of milk and it will absolutely go bad before i use it all, its just too much milk for how short the shelf life is after you open it. Hemp is Low Water Use--

Hemp grows in many climates,

hemp grows easily from any combination of processes
of at least 1 step: seed, transplant, cutting & clone.
I tried it once but it tasted bad and didn't foam. Maybe best to keep it as a protein extract product and fibre crop, but each to their own. As long as it's not an animal's milk, it's a good milk.
Hemp is fire
you mean cannabis?
Hemp destroys the soil that it's grown in by sucking all of the nutrients out of it. While it might be fine in small amounts, growing at large scale is not ideal.
@@tohstygohstygal Hemp does the opposite of your claim. It improves soil quality. That’s why farmers often plant hemp in their soil in preparation for a different crop to be planted. Even if it didn’t work this way we could grow it in hydroponic solutions, rendering soil obsolete.

I would have added “Ease of DIY” because Oat is very easy to make, and Cashew is pretty easy. And, in Baking, Coconut is useful when the coconut cream is separated. It’s so thicker
While it’s not a “milk”, aquafaba-the juice from cooking chickpeas-might be useful for frothing, since it can be used to make meringue.

16:12 im pretty sure dairy milk is subsidised by the government, which is what makes it far cheaper than other milks
^^ this, I should do my research on all this, but I'd also really like a food theory on it.
71% of global emissions are caused by 100 companies
Oat is the least water intensive of the bunch if you are going for environmental impact.
If environmental impact was a factor almond milk would have lost, requiring 400+ gallons per pound to produce.
Could you maybe do a part two exploring what’s more environmentally friendly?
I believe it's oat
Definitely oat, he's mentioned it in another video.
Anyone know where it was mentioned. I was wondering about this as well?
Actually I can't find it so maybe I'm wrong about him mentioning it.
Rice. 0,9 KG CO2
Soy. 0,9 KG CO2
Almond. 0,7 KG CO2
Oat. 0,6 KG CO2
Pro tip: Coconut milk goes great in your mashed potatoes!!!! I learned that the fun way 😋
Yeah. Coconut milk, while itsucks as a milk substitute, is an excelent seasoning and flavor tool!
& coffee too
as a lactose intolerant vegetarian this was a very intriguing video for me to watch. i still eat dairy but i try to keep my "milk" plant based. but i still sometimes just drink lactose free milk 🤷🏻♀️. maybe a video comparing lactose free milk to regular milk? see if it really holds up to the real thing? idk just an idea
The face reveal we all been waiting for as finally arrive at 8:32.
WHAT IS IT WITH 2022 AND FACE REVEALS WE GOT DREAM, MARIO MOVIE MARIO AND NOW FRIGGIN ASH, boi this is a good year
I remember trying almond milk before since my dad is lactose intolerant and I actually thought it was pretty good, it was strange at first because it was just a bit off from regular milk, but I got used to it quickly.
*POINTS EXCITEDLY* ASH!!! OMG!!
Also amazing video! Always love how informative your whole team is!! 👍🏼Great job everyone!!
I can't stand oat in coffee. It literally makes me shiver drinking it.

i went into this fully thinking almond would win, i drink it almost every day and i love it! i had no idea so many people didn’t like it
Truth be told. Almond milk is like a Kombucha or whatever this drink called. A very narrow specific taste which either makes you say I love it or get it out from me.
to be fair, it really just depends on if you like the taste of almonds so much you would eat them with every meal. i hate almonds, therefore hate almond milk. 🤷
@@first.user_ have you tried the vanilla flavored almond milk with no sweetener?
I like that one. It tastes more similar to cows milk to me. 😊
That was me with coconut milk. It's the only one I can stand and makes me feel happy. Also love to cook with it
@@first.user_ I don't care for almonds, I can't eat them on their own, only if they're in the same bite as dried fruit.
But I think Almond milk and Cashew milk were my favorite of the milk alternatives.
Today marks the day I switch from almond milk to soy milk, especially in coffee! Thanks, Team Theorist!!
When the protagonist of the video, the grand Matpat said : "It's milkin' time", I was truly impressed. That says a lot about the state of the fossil energies industry.
Great video, 10 glasses of milk/6 Starbucks steaks.
