I've always interpreted the story as Wilbur being the one who died in the river, and his whole character through the ARG is just his ghost/revenant self trying to make sense of what's happened.

i actually disagree on the “i’m so cold” being the girl’s last words; i think it may instead have been his thoughts as he tried to save her (since he mentioned having hypothermia, presumably from exposure to the cold water), so it’s a lingering memory of the trauma.
I mean, he did say that it was likely both. For one, the girl said it, but the fact that he himself felt it too at that moment ingrained it even further into his brain.

As someone who has DID... Thank you matpat for saying how awful this disorder is shown in the media. We are not monsters and we do not kill people or anything like that. It is important to explain people how different we all can be, and how those 'different' people deserve care, respect and support just as much as any other human being. Nice theory but I have a few points: I don’t think the girl is “missing”. Since in the final wilbur editor video there is a section of voice mails. Rihanna (his friend) rings up asking him if he’s okay after what happened at the O2 arena. If the girl is dead than I think they thought the girls death was a suicide or she fell in and wilbur tried to save her but failed. But more likely is that the girl is not dead, but instead was saved. Remember how Kai swims in the Thames? Kai saved the girl. Maybe will never pushed her in? Maybe they went out together and they both fell in the Thames? Will says that he is embarrassed and cold. Imagine not being able to swim as a fully grown man? Pretty embarrassing. I’m a massive crywank fan, I noticed that wilbur changed lyrics, notably the “my lovers were a lie” lyric. This definetly agrees that’s it’s something to do with this girl. The voice mail from the girl appears to me to be talking to another person about someone else. She is cheating on someone. What if that person is Kai? That’s why will wants Kai gone? After trauma people can develop a lot of side effects, most common being PTSD. If you have ptsd you can develops psychosis. If will has psychosis, he could genuinely believe people are after him. I think I could know what the 1:112:332:44 clue is. In Wilbur's song "I am very smart," at 1:11, Wilbur says "high school party," and from 2:33 to 2:44 he says "I think I've made a mistake, the first mistake I've ever made." additionally, In the music video, Wilbur wears a bowtie, which could correlate to the saying "it's nice to end things with a bow on top" also mentioned in the arg. Finally, at 2:33, Wilbur changes clothing to the same black shirt he's wearing in the video where he's in the "decrepit old house in the middle of nowhere." This might just be coincidence, but maybe something about a high school party could tie into the arg.

This is a good idea, but Wilbur actually disproved the DID theory a while back!!! I think it would be more likely that “Wilbur” willingly adopted the persona of the Fakiers rather then developed it through the trauma of the event. Furthermore, DID is developed in childhood and people with the disorder cant willingly get rid of one of the “personas”. (Professional term is alters). This contradicts with Wilbur’s whole goodbye speech, he was aware that a part of him was leaving.

Just wanted to point out DID develops as an internal escape hatch from a traumatic situation. It’s a way that person developed to **endure** trauma without actually having to be there mentally and usually is accompanied by amnesia to some degree. In other words they couldn’t fight or flight and resorted to freezing on an internal level while maintaining an outward facade (one of the alternate personalities).
There ARE Variations of DID, that exist which are basically most symptoms of DID but not all of them to quality a diagnosis. I do believe the arg features some kind of dissociative disorder, just not the type YALL are thinking of.
In a nutshell: The Wilbur ARG is all a take on Edgar Allen Poe's stories in 21st century. Either that, or it was he's way of telling us to read his favorite author's books.

If he's playing specific notes on a guitar with only E and A strings, that would place his fingers on specific fret locations that could be possible to represent as numerical locations. Each note would be in a new position, which would give you a long line of numbers. Numbers that might be reduced to some other thing like letters or something.

Id like to note that in real DID, a headmate 'disappearing' is often called "intergrating", the person and their psyche merging into another to be whole again, or, whole-er, depending on if they still have other headmates, and intergration often comes with coping with trauma and healing. Some systems have the goal of intergrating back into a single unified entity while some prefer to live and function as a plural, so good detail here.
Don't mental health professionals recommend trying to integrate rather than "play into the disorder" (sorry for the bad wording, don't know how else to word it)?
See thats the thing, every systems healing process is different and some are actually better off staying plural in order to function more coherently, relationships between the headmates can create a functional dependency, and sometimes its actually better for the whole to live as a plural rather than one entity with less coping mechinisms. Headmates will often develop proficiancies that the core didnt have, allowing functionality in roles; for example, headmate A does the taxes because theyre good at math, but headmate B does the cooking, and headmate C organizes and cleans.

Some systems may retain the skills of the parts when they re-integrate, but in other cases, they have to start from scratch. It's a type of healing, and for some that healing is easier or more proficient than others. Think of a major limb trauma: sometimes it's better for a person to have it fully amputated, and other times its better attempting to reattach. A lot of factors dictate how that damage heals and how long it takes. Same with DID/OSDD, it all depends on the needs of the individual, so that means that recovery and completeness looks different from system to system.

this is a really cool theory, however it doesn't explain the fact that Wilbur repeats in one of the videos the phrase "it's nice when things end with a bow on top". I believe the bow of a ship is the front or back, and having a bow on top means the ship is sinking. The theory suggests it was just people drowning but why would Editor Wilbur reference ships? Love the video though, it's a great insight to your thought process, thank you!!
A few things though. Bow when used referencing the forward part of the ship is pronounced b-oww, rhyming with wow. Not b-oh rhyming with toe. It wouldn't make much sense that he was referencing a ship of any kind when, while it's spelled the same, it sounds completely different. It would make more sense if he was using the term to refer tying up loose ends, or referring to gifts or presents, or something of that nature. I'm not familiar enough with the game to make a guess on that front. Also, people tie bows into their hair, to try and look good. Just saying, there really isn't any reason to lean towards boat or ship because of that.

what if he actually was able to get her to of the thames and he put her in the bow of a ship that has shipping containers and the I'm so cold is because there isn't heating inside the shipping container and she would still be wet and that's how she died and eventually when the shipping container was opened they found her dead wich ties into the annabel-lee poem when it states were they lay down by her after she was dead probably referring to her family finding her and collapsing "in her tomb by the sounding sea" which also refers to the annabel-lee poem and "in the night tide" might tie into it because ships usually dock at night so they would have opened the container to find her dead freezing in the night and the cloud might be referring to her taking her last breathe because when it's cold your breath is usually white idk just a theory
I really appreciate that disclaimer. I grew up with disassociation personality disorder, and it really just is a way to make it through traumatic experiencs. The personality helps you and looks out for you and that's really it. I mean for me it felt like I was dreaming when the other person was taking over. Doesn't mean that I was willing to kill anyone 😸 It was just a way to get through things, and with therapy again at least for me I was able to "let go" of that personality. It's honestly not some deadly thing

Statistics vary so it’s difficult to say how many people have it but it’s very likely that somebody you know, even if you are just acquainted with them, has DID. It’s not always visible. Nice theory but I have a few points:
I don’t think the girl is “missing”. Since in the final wilbur editor video there is a section of voice mails. Rihanna (his friend) rings up asking him if he’s okay after what happened at the O2 arena. If the girl is dead than I think they thought the girls death was a suicide or she fell in and wilbur tried to save her but failed. But more likely is that the girl is not dead, but instead was saved. Remember how Kai swims in the Thames? Kai saved the girl. Maybe will never pushed her in? Maybe they went out together and they both fell in the Thames? Will says that he is embarrassed and cold. Imagine not being able to swim as a fully grown man? Pretty embarrassing.
I’m a massive crywank fan, I noticed that wilbur changed lyrics, notably the “my lovers were a lie” lyric. This definetly agrees that’s it’s something to do with this girl.
The voice mail from the girl appears to me to be talking to another person about someone else. She is cheating on someone. What if that person is Kai? That’s why will wants Kai gone?
After trauma people can develop a lot of side effects, most common being PTSD. If you have ptsd you can develops psychosis. If will has psychosis, he could genuinely believe people are after him. I think I could know what the 1:11 2:33 2:44 clue is. In Wilbur's song "I am very smart," at 1:11, Wilbur says "high school party," and from 2:33 to 2:44 he says "I think I've made a mistake, the first mistake I've ever made." additionally, In the music video, Wilbur wears a bowtie, which could correlate to the saying "it's nice to end things with a bow on top" also mentioned in the arg. Finally, at 2:33, Wilbur changes clothing to the same black shirt he's wearing in the video where he's in the "decrepit old house in the middle of nowhere." This might just be coincidence, but maybe something about a high school party could tie into the arg.

This is a good idea, but Wilbur actually disproved the DID theory a while back!!! I think it would be more likely that “Wilbur” willingly adopted the persona of the Fakiers rather then developed it through the trauma of the event. Furthermore, DID is developed in childhood and people with the disorder cant willingly get rid of one of the “personas”. (Professional term is alters). This contradicts with Wilbur’s whole goodbye speech, he was aware that a part of him was leaving.

Just wanted to point out DID develops as an internal escape hatch from a traumatic situation. It’s a way that person developed to **endure** trauma without actually having to be there mentally and usually is accompanied by amnesia to some degree. In other words they couldn’t fight or flight and resorted to freezing on an internal level while maintaining an outward facade (one of the alternate personalities).

Id like to note that in real DID, a headmate 'disappearing' is often called "intergrating", the person and their psyche merging into another to be whole again, or, whole-er, depending on if they still have other headmates, and intergration often comes with coping with trauma and healing. Some systems have the goal of intergrating back into a single unified entity while some prefer to live and function as a plural, so good detail here.
Don't mental health professionals recommend trying to integrate rather than "play into the disorder" (sorry for the bad wording, don't know how else to word it)?
See thats the thing, every systems healing process is different and some are actually better off staying plural in order to function more coherently, relationships between the headmates can create a functional dependency, and sometimes its actually better for the whole to live as a plural rather than one entity with less coping mechinisms. Headmates will often develop proficiancies that the core didnt have, allowing functionality in roles; for example, headmate A does the taxes because theyre good at math, but headmate B does the cooking, and headmate C organizes and cleans.

Some systems may retain the skills of the parts when they re-integrate, but in other cases, they have to start from scratch. It's a type of healing, and for some that healing is easier or more proficient than others. A lot of factors dictate how that damage heals and how long it takes. Same with DID/OSDD, it all depends on the needs of the individual, so that means that recovery and completeness looks different from system to system.

this is a really cool theory, however it doesn't explain the fact that Wilbur repeats in one of the videos the phrase "it's nice when things end with a bow on top". I believe the bow of a ship is the front or back, and having a bow on top means the ship is sinking. The theory suggests it was just people drowning but why would Editor Wilbur reference ships? Love the video though, it's a great insight to your thought process, thank you!!
A few things though.
Bow when used referencing the forward part of the ship is pronounced b-oww, rhyming with wow. Not b-oh rhyming with toe. It wouldn't make much sense that he was referencing a ship of any kind when, while it's spelled the same, it sounds completely different.
It would make more sense if he was using the term to refer tying up loose ends, or referring to gifts or presents, or something of that nature. I'm not familiar enough with the game to make a guess on that front. Also, people tie bows into their hair, to try and look good.
Just saying, there really isn't any reason to lean towards boat or ship because of that.

I really appreciate that disclaimer. I grew up with disassociation personality disorder, and it really just is a way to make it through traumatic experiencs. The personality helps you and looks out for you and that's really it. I mean for me it felt like I was dreaming when the other person was taking over. Doesn't mean that I was willing to kill anyone 😸
It was just a way to get through things, and with therapy again at least for me I was able to "let go" of that personality. It's honestly not some deadly thing

For those of you who mightn’t know: DID is a condition that develops in childhood as a response to severe abuse/trauma. And it’s more common than people realise! Statistics vary so it’s difficult to say how many people have it but it’s very likely that somebody you know, even if you are just acquainted with them, has DID. It’s not always visible. And very unlike the Hollywood portrayal. I recommend the RUclips channel Multiplicity and Me if you want to learn more :)
