When I saw @MrBeast put out a video called 'I Didn't Eat Food For 30 Days', I knew I would need to talk about it. See, that sounds like a DANGEROUS challenge on the surface. When you actually watch the video and get context, well, yeah it's still a worrisome idea. Between the challenge and Gordon Ramsey trying to feed him a bad meal, there is a LOT to break down here.

In WW2, when the Americans liberated the concentration camp "Saint-Cyprien", located in France. The American troops wanted to feed the newly freed Camp Prisoners because they have been starving.
Without knowing what would happen if they would feed them heavy food, literally seconds after liberating them. The soldiers, thinking it was the right thing, started giving the Prisoners Apples, Sandwiches, and even Chocolates.
Leading to a lot of Prisoners dying.
After that incident, the Science team gave out an order to not feed the prisoners in the camps and to let the Medical Staff feed them first.
It was mostly a slow input of light soup.
Hello everyone (23 second difference to first pinned comment reply)
Thank you for sharing, very relevant and a good lesson
Well, that's a soup-id way to die.

There’s a story on RUclips about a crew of Japanese sailors who shipwrecked on an island and went a few weeks without food. They were eventually rescued by an American ship and the captain was extremely strict with what the starving crew ate. Making sure they only ate small amounts of soup. Ship captains in the 1800’s clearly knew how to deal with starvation. And it goes to show how easily knowledge can be lost.
I mean, in a lot of the western world we don't deal with refeeding syndrome levels of starvation in everyday life. People living in remote areas or with an inconsistency food supply probably have a better grasp on the concept, they just also aren't the ones on the internet talking about refeeding
@RayAstley no he didn’t. He only lasted 2 weeks before breaking the fast
That's because it was a major concern for hundreds of years before preserved foods were invented.
Ship captains had to balance how much food they needed to take to feed the entire crew for a voyage that could take months with how many goods they could store in their holds. I mean, the good pay for the voyage, so... If the captain got greedy or the voyage was delayed for too long, there was a big concern that food and fresh water would run out. Often at a certain point, a captain had to call for rationing.
This is one reason stowaways were a big deal, as well, not only are they extra unaccounted for mouth/s to feed, but it might take a minute for the crew to realize food has gone missing, throwing off the portions and could also lead to rationing. If the captain is generous enough to take pity on the stowaway and lets them work for their passage, the crew might not treat them kindly because their extra mouth means less food for them.
Ermm.. Is this somekind of Eurocentrism syndrome thing?
Because, Muslims know about this thing like.. Since hundreds of years ago. I mean 1 thousands and something.
They do fast for roughly 29 days every year. And that's just the main fast. Some of them also do the "side fasting".
And, in their method of fasting for 10+ hours, the thing is, you eat some foods near the time when u start your fast. Like.. U eat when 30minutes before the fast starts in every dawn for example.
And when u try to break your fast, u need to drink water first, and then eat like.. 3 date fruits. If u dont have date fruits, eat some little snacks first. To break your fast. And after that, they do the dusk prayer. And after the prayer, they eat their dinner meal. The heavy meal.
That's how it works for 1+thousands of years
Please, Europeans. Please be more open to the surrounding. Some Asians(chinese, arab, turks, austronesian, etc) are better than Europeans. They discover and invent some stuff earlier than the Europeans.
how quickly knowledge is lost? wth are you on about? do you even hear yourself "ship captains in the 1800's" bro how do you think anyone here should have the knowledge of a ships captain lmfao. Ask a modern day captain, maybe then you can prove a point.
Slight correction: Pretty sure Gordan didn't know MrBeast was fasting until he literally started cooking for him. He probably would not have even started cooking if he knew. By the time he started, he definitely has the pride of a chef to have his target audience enjoy his food.
But still. Gee, Gordan, as if Technoblade wasn't enough. Just... JUST imagine both Jimmy AND techno dying around the same time. That would definitely be 9 11 of the internet.
Edit: ok, I see quite a lot of comments about how this statement is not appropriate and how deaths if two people does not even compare to that genocide, so instead of replying to everyone individually, I will just say it here.
1) I know that this statement involves tragedies that some people here might have even been impacted by, and I'm sorry if that managed to tick you. I'm not trying to make fun out of those events at all, it's just my way of emphasizing my worry about someone's life. As you can see, I was REALLY worried about Jimmy's life.
2) I was talking less about the impact itself and more about the shocking public despair, that would probably be similar. Probably, Idk for sure, and I don't want it to be tested anyways.

I remember when I was a kid a holocaust survivor was telling us all these stories about his experience there, and the one that stuck with me the most for how so utterly devastating it is, is how when his small group was rescued at the end of the war they were given tins of food and rescue blankets. The only two options were a dryer biscuity type and a sausage and gravy type. He originally got the sausage one but his closest friend was far hungrier than him so he swapped it for the biscuit. They all hadn’t eaten in days- the shock to the system was so severe every person who ate the sausage died. He watched his only friend die AFTER they survived the holocaust…

Refeeding syndrome actually somewhat happened to my dad. He had a really bad case of the flu several years ago and could barely keep anything down. All he could have was broth for like a week and a half. Well he started to feel better. The rest of us wanted to get burgers. He obviously didn’t have one but wanted to have a bite (he wasn’t contagious anymore). He had one bite and within about fifteen minutes he was unresponsive. His eyes were wide open but he didn’t speak or respond when we were screaming at him. It was extremely terrifying. He was responsive with 10min and he refused to go to the hospital😖 thankfully he only got better after that but yeah don’t make any drastic changes!!

This is probably my favourite food theory video to date. This information could save lives of people who fast, whether voluntarily or not. As someone who has unfortunately been in a position of not being able to acquire food, I really appreciate this information. There had been times in which I went a few days without food, only to try and stuff myself. I only ever felt sick, and knowing it's my body's natural response is a huge perspective change.

What was interesting is that during his Willy Wonka video you could tell his energy levels were low...but had no idea it was due to the challenge he was doing at the time. I figured it was from trying to put together the crazy factory.
Unlikely, after the first 3 days of a fast almost everyone reports greatly increased energy and mental clarity when fasting, and I have found that myself. It makes sense... if your body thinks you have no food, why would it encourage you to just lay around? Get out there, hunt something, forage, bring food in!
It's normal to feel low on energy when you don't eat enough... if you eat enough to live (barely) then your body is more inclined to wait it out for food to come. But if no food is available at all that's more of an emergency, and you tend to have a hard time sitting still.
MrBeast is a brain burner!(Правдивое видео🇷🇺):... ruclips.net/video/sJHH1HrGlRU/видео.html
@@shivorath That just doesn't make much sense. Your body still need energy to work. Even if it's motivated, fact is that it still have no calorie to burn to fuel your activity. So your body would still want to reserve as much energy as it can, leading to people feeling low energy level
100 house circle
@@shivorath Bullshit. A lack of food doesn't give you more energy. As explained in the video, it just gives you more stress and a reduced amount of dopamine. It's the lack of dopamine and the increased amount of stress that makes people hunt for food. Your energy on the other hand is much lower than normal so you waste as little of it as possible. At least outside of the times where you have a burst of adrenaline.
The only thing a lack of food doesn't do is make you sluggish. Being sluggish is not the same as having a lack of energy. Oh, and the reason for people reporting increased energy and mental clarity? They are sluggish for at least several hours a day when they aren't fasting and confuse being sluggish with a lack of energy.
I'll be honest, one thing Hunger Games taught me was that eating a lot after starving/eating very little wasn't a good thing, even if they didn't portray it perfectly or anything. Interesting to hear it elaborated on, tbh.

As someone who struggles with anorexia, eating only around 900 calories a day, I knew as soon as you started this episode that you were going to talk about refeeding syndrome. I’ve never been forced into recovery to experience it myself but I’ve done plenty of research on it. It can be extremely dangerous and harm your body in so many ways. This is why many people trying to recover from eating disorders only go up about 100 calories or so per week. Him eating something extremely full of calories after being malnourished for so long is just a recipe for disaster. I’m glad you covered this as it’s not something most people know about. This will hopefully help people understand their bodies more.
That's how I recovered, it is also a lot easier on your mentally ill brain to increase calories slowly. I know going all in is a method some people use, and it sounds like torture to me. My grandmother told me this story: We're from the Philippines, and during the end of WWII during and at the exit of the Japanese occupation, the US military started to air drop supplies to the civilians including food. One of my grandmother's neighbors, a young boy, picked up a can of corned beef and ate it straight from opening the box of supplies. He dropped dead moments after. At the time my grandmother thought he died from choking to death, but later realized it must have been refeeding syndrome.

I honestly hope some people I used to know in eating disorder communities see this. They used to do binge meetups where they would fast for a week or more beforehand, then go to all-you-can-eat buffets and binge/purge. Realizing how deadly this was after the fact is scary, and I am honestly surprised at the amount of us that are still alive.
People with eating disorders can be crazy sometimes, and some of the communities I've seen were very destructive, like romanticising no eating and viewing it as something heroic. Like, why would someone do something like that to their bodies, go get some help ppl
Refeeding is no concern at 3 days, slight concern for some folks at 5, and anything after that you start playing with fire. If they did 5 then I doubt they were in harm, doing a full 7 is bad though, especially more after that. If they purged afterward then it probably wouldn't be a big issue, though they probably still digested some food at that point. Purging has a whole list of issues in its own right too...
Part of why they did this was BECAUSE it makes you purge without mechanical Sid. A week isn't AS dangerous, but the disordered eating is more concerning (I am ten years in recovery).

What I don’t get, is why Ramsay, as a person who makes and eats food for a living, didn’t know how dangerous this would be HAD Jimmy actually swallowed. I don’t wanna hear crap about him being concerned of Jimmy not eating. HE should’ve known better. And as a person who knows all about food, he should know about refeeding syndrome. Jimmy himself even mentions the syndrome to the camera within ear width of Ramsay. So no excuses.
This actually makes sense. I had VSG back in 2019, lost a ton of weight, REALLY fast, was on a completely liquid diet for the first month or so, and the doctors I was working with didn’t specify name drop “refeeding syndrome” or that I could literally die from the complications, but they DID give me a list of foods that I could start reintroducing into my diet and when I could start reintroducing them. I absolutely did notice complications, though. Nothing too severe. Mainly, I’d just throw everything back up, I’d get sweaty and my heart would race. I could pretty much only eat eggs, chicken and drink unsweetened tea and water, about a year after the surgery because my body couldn’t handle other foods yet. They didn’t mention the exact portion size, in relation to body weight, so perhaps that’s why. Luckily, my body has acclimated to most things, once again. It never got used to sodas again and they burn the heck out of my stomach, so I can’t even have them on cheat days, now.
A couple of times, I skipped breakfast and lunch proceeded to hurt.

Oddly enough, I learned about refeeding syndrome from one of the Ultima games. You find a man in a cave that has been starving and begs you for food. If you give him too much he dies. Crazy the things you learn from games.
I personally learned about it from 1000 Ways to Die
@@pyromainia4710 it was learning about WW2 for me back when I was 12. People were rehabilitating starved, skin over bones concentration camp survivors. They gave them a decent sized meal, or less than due to what they could handle and that killed them. It wasn't a grand feast. Though that did happen too. Having similar unfortunate outcomes...
For me, I think it was a sci fi book, by Elizabeth Moon, called Trading in Danger. Though, a slightly less drastic case--Our Heroes were essentially adrift in space for a week or 2 with insufficient food for the number of people on the ship (due to pirates). No one died, they were just warned that they needed to be careful to avoid being sick or whatever.

I just wanna say, as someone with anorexia who’s been at risk of refeeding syndrome more than once; the fact that there are medical professionals in charge of TREATMENT of ED patients who’ve never even heard of this phenomenon is absolutely terrifying to me.
Forced to consume 3,000 to 5,000 kcal per day minimum, from under 500 daily as they calculated what the daily average had been for half year or so. Only the med student on the inpatient team had any concerns, said death might occur, was very worried. Due to peer battles, worst experience of my life.
That sounds at a really really miserable experience.
I found recovery really hard mentally and I was going up 100 calories a week, stopping at 1800 to 1900 calories. I can't imagine the level of strain on your mental health with going from less than 500 calories to 3000 to 5000 calories.
I very much agree with this comment
I’ve been at risk for it too many times having a stomach disease and feeding tube, most doctors do not know about it same with going into starvation mode
It’s so weird too because I went 2 days fasting which wasn’t even on purpose. I did finally try to eat but when I did i just felt horrible. It took me awhile to actually start eating normally again. I think it’s so cool how it works though.
As someone who's been in recovery from anorexia and bulimia for several years, I'm really glad you've talked about this. I spent several years eating less than 1000 calories a day and not keeping it down, with my only real intake of "nutrition" being sodas and shakes. *not fully
not fully but yeah, i have crohn’s and it generally isn’t recommended for crohn’s patients either lol
I have Crohn’s. And I’ve been through this. It’s hard but at the time it was needed.
I actually had to be on a liquid diet for 30 days. don't recommend it, obviously. but it wasn't a choice, I went through surgeries all my life for various reasons. but this one was for my mouth, and what ended up happening was the doctors had to seal my mouth shut with wires and this plastic at the front. it was also hard to breath because of all that.
But going through it, I lost 40lbs in that month (115-70ibs), I couldn't stand when I had to pee cause I would get dizzy and feel like fainting, I got really irritated and started to get angry, losing memories would happen too, days started to feel longer, some days I didn't even have energy or motivation to even lift an arm
I didn't have to worry about the slow introduction to food again, because during the recovery process I would have a month of liquid food, then a month of soft food, and then slow intro to solid foods in the 3rd month since it was my mouth that was recovering. I didn't really worry about the amount of weight I was losing though since its proven that if you lose a bunch of weight by cutting a drastic amount of calories that your body will naturally fall back into old eating habits (that's why its not recommended to drastically change your calorie intake and start by lose 1-2lbs a week). I did play basketball in the middle of the liquid diet month, all I remember is going down on one knee trying to catch my breath 5 times and then running back on defense, my friends still ask how I did it. I honestly don't know.
fun facts about this situation is that the day before the surgery was thanksgiving, and if you know anything about surgeries you can't eat for 6 hrs before the surgery, so my family was having thanksgiving dinner while I was starving in my room. I did get a more appreciation for food, not because of the taste of it, but the energy and nutrients it provides. worse part of all... we found out they messed up a week or two into the liquid diet phase. but that's a whole other thing.
honestly having youtubers like Mr. beast and matpat that have the curiosity and drive to test and/or inform us about things like these topics is amazing. just seeing jimmy go through the same symptoms and then explained by matpat was amazing, keep up the good work.
Honestly you deserve way more credit for this!
This challenge made me respect Mrbeast even more, the dude is literally willing to do something this risky to entertain. Always good to see the amount of prepartion and precaution he took in order to stay safe for this challenge.
Thankfully, Jimmy is smart enough to know when to quit and to know what to avoid doing..... Mostly, but the underwater challenge he did also put him in danger and he didn't seem aware of the danger with that challenge. Essentially, he was enclosed underwater with only an air pipe feeding him oxygen. What he failed to realize was that the small amount of oxygen was not enough, he was entoxicating himself with his own CO2 produced while breathing due to the lack of air circulation. After many hours underwater, Jimmy was dazed and confused, and nobody realized that he could have lost consciousness underwater, although his friends were thankfully checking in on him. I'm concerned that Jimmy will harm himself with these extreme challenges, since he always seems to grow more ambitious with his challenges.
Stop. I get it's concerning, but this video shows he has professionals behind the scenes with ever video. He knows what he's doing, no need to baby a grown man with professionals.

As a side note, there have been articles suggesting benefits from fasting, very much in consideration of letting our digestive system rest (and repair the intestine tract), reset unwanted eating habits, as well as autophagy. However, starting with 30 days might not be a good idea. Most people who incorporate fasting start w a few hours and slowly increase the time until it becomes over a week, some people doing it for a month. However, those people usually have a big focus on incorporating electrolytes for example in order for the body to cope. These people, including myself, tend to have a low carb diet, normally on the level to maintain ketosis. Then by fasting, one can actually experience increased focus and energy. However, if the person is carb(sugar) driven normally, the fasting experience tend to not be very pleasant... When "getting back" from fasting, broth is usually used in small portions in the beginning to prepare the body for nutrient intake again.

Gordon and his friends would have, likely, all tried to stop him if he just started trying to eat that sandwich.
I have a been on the recovery of an eating disorder from childhood and whenever I tried to self recover I would eat too much and become physically sick, it wasn't until talking to a proper doctor/therapist that what I was doing in an attempt to recover was just as detrimental as the disorder itself
