Porsche 986 Boxster - Stuck Top Conversion to Manual

  • Re-posting my old video to assist a few people on the forums.
    I did eventually repair the top that is shown in this video and the problem was a micro-switch in the latch. Manual operation is quick and easy, but I prefer to have everything working correctly once I have time to fix it myself.

    I love this. Thank you and very simple to do. Going to attempt today. My transmission teeth slipping and this will let me save up for the repairs and still enjoy the top down. Bravo.

    you can remove the push rods for the convertible top, and the opposite push rods to elevate the lid, from the transmission. that's it to have a fully manual top. you can also pop the top fuse, if you want to disable the motor. it's fuse B6 (and maybe D3) in a '98 boxster.

    I just bought a 2002 Boxster and had this exact issue: top stopped working, frozen in open (down) position. Thanks AAZCD! I am now in manual mode and crisis averted! Cost: $0 and just a couple of bloody knuckles loosening the 19mm passenger side bolt! Totally worth it. Great video.

    Dude. Thank you! I tried every other youtube video and none of them worked. I wondered about taking off those clips, but didn't want to open Pandora's Box of Porsche Woes.
    Saw it here and thought I'd give it a try. Boom. Done. Top is in manual mode, and now I can see what went wrong. When the damn thing is stuck in the open position you can't see a thing. Opened it up and found the little ball end on one side had broke so one side hung up and jammed the whole thing. Pretty easy fix.
    Getting it all back together and synced up should be fun! But I'll start with a video from you.
    Thanks again!

    Excellent!
    Before the Boxster I had an all manual VW Cabrio. Loved the speed and ease of throwing that top up or down in seconds.
    Going to convert the Boxster soon 👍

    Another tip guys, it was hard to remove the bolts since the bolts have loctite, but if you remove the seatbelt that will allow better the brake bar to be able to loose the bolts, good luck to you all.

    Thank you for this information. I made the conversion to manual mode on my 987. How do I get to convertible malfunction and red ! light on my gauge cluster to go off? I plan on running it in manual mode for the long run and the warning lights are irritating. Thank you good sir.

    I have a bad transmission in my top also but i am also having an issue where the car thinks the top isnt all the way down or up so the windows wont go up and its constantly beeping at me.

  • @lisagillespie3127
    @lisagillespie3127 2 года назад +1

    I also pulled the convertible top relay out . My windows would not go up all the way after changing
    the micro switch in the top latch it still would not allow the windows to go all the way up
    so relay is probably bad . I could /can fix the top replace the stripped gear in the transmission but
    honestly I like it better in the manual mode its so simple . So for me I just am going to keep it manual.
    I have a 98 with about 70k on it . The early models are sweet with that 2.5 L and 5 speed manual .I timed
    how long it takes in manual mode and it takes me 30 seconds or less to put top up or down in manual
    mode . Just not worth all the problems with the auto top . You could do it at a stop light if you needed
    and I don't see how the clam shell could come up when going fast . I have had it to 90 and no problem .
    If you take to shop you are looking at a couple thousand to fix a top on these just not worth it . You can do it yourself
    for reasonable cost but I think new relay is 250 or so and it looks for feedback from micro switches in the
    top latch and doors so pulling the relay solves that problem . Once you dig into the whole convertible top
    system it is to complicated for the gain of it being auto vs manual in my opinion . Problems with
    the tops are relays go bad , Micro switches go bad plastic gear stripping in the transmission and weak
    plastic ball joints . A lot going on for very little gain

    Hey. Got to the bolt. But can't get the driver's side off. Took me a long time to get the passenger side off. Am thinking I need more leverage. What socket extension length did you use. The bolt on the driver's side just isn't budging.

    • @chrmoly_4199

      I have the same problem. None of them comes off. Tips?

  • @timothycrump599
    @timothycrump599 2 года назад

    Is there a chance that the driver's side bolt loosens in the opposite direction? I cannot get the driver's side bolt to unloosen. I've tried various extensions, a breaker bar, using a lead pipe for added leverage, spraying on WD40 and having two other guys try to help me. The only thing I can think of now is the possibilty that the bolt turns in the opposite direction. I know this sounds stupid. But this task seems impossible.

    • @AAZCD
      @AAZCD  2 года назад

      Hi Timothy, the bolts are identical on both sides, but there is often Loctite on them making them stick. Take a look at my post #10 in this discussion for an alternative method; pop a clip off the clamshell arm at the back to release the lifting arm: 986forum.com/forums/diy-project-guides/68939-stuck-convertible-top-manual-operation.html Good luck with it.

    How do you remove that initial plastic cover that sits on top of the ragtop lifting mechanism? I can't seem to get it off. And my top is stuck in the up position. Think the plastic gear has cracked on the transmission.

    • @AAZCD
      @AAZCD  2 года назад

      If you are talking about the round plastic piece that is between the lifting arms and the transmission, you should be able to remove it after taking out the one bolt that holds the arms to the transmission.

      In case you haven't already seen it, this article at PelicanParts shows the procedure for replacing the broken plastic gear: www.pelicanparts.com/techarticles/Boxster_Tech/BODY_Convertible_Top_Gear_Replacement/BODY_Convertible_Top_Gear_Replacement.htm

    Is it necessary to remove both transmissions? BTW, great video. Mine has a broken transmission but I want to run it manually before the parts arrive.

    • @AAZCD
      @AAZCD  2 месяца назад

      The transmissions do not need to be removed for manual operation. Just disconnect the linkage at the 19mm bolt.

      Hi, check out this discussion on the 986Forum: www.986forum.com/forums/diy-project-guides/68939-stuck-convertible-top-manual-operation.html. If you still have the problem, try removing the relay for the top. It's a double relay under the dash.

    Would this method work for a 1998 model as well thanks for the tips buddy

    • @AAZCD
      @AAZCD  3 года назад

      A 1998 should be the same. I have done this temporarily on cars from 1997 through 2004 and the procedure was the same.

    • @javelinadad
      @javelinadad 3 года назад

      Actually that whole mechanism look VERY similar to the 987 Era as well.
      But do you have any issues with the dash warning lights or the computer sensing that something isn't normal?

    • @AAZCD
      @AAZCD  3 года назад

      @@javelinadad The only issue that I have found is the light on the dash that indicates the top is being opened. On the 2000 and later cars there is a switch inside the left side top transmission. The wires to that switch will need to be jumped if the transmission is removed. There's some discussion here: 986forum.com/forums/diy-project-guides/68939-stuck-convertible-top-manual-operation.html *I post as '78F350' on that forum.

    Sadly, my 19mm bolts wouldn’t budge even with an impact wrench and heat. Neither will the arms. 23 years of being in there. Really sucks.

    • @AAZCD
      @AAZCD  2 года назад +1

      Try popping the clip off the arm that goes to the clamshell. You'll probably need a very long flat tip screwdriver. I've done it a couple times when the bolts were trouble: 986forum.com/forums/628730-post10.html
