    Very helpful, thank you. When you initially had the problem, do you remember what the symptoms were? Mine (2006) sounds like the motor has a problem (it's loud) but that could actually be the transmission I am hearing. I am also getting an error message on the dash that says the top is not closed even though it is latched.

      @@cmcnichols4did you end up finding out whats wrong? I have the same symptoms. 2006 boxster here too. Very loud sound from the motor and at first i heard a popping sound. brought into porsche and they said it was the motor but right now im having it worked on at some other shop. The popping sound i believe was the arm. The motor is clearly still working so its maybe a gear?

    I see, the moment that you are closing the top at the end, your softtop does not close properly, that means, it is not guided on the inner side of the plastic guiding part which covers your right window. You can find several video’s on YT how to solve this. I did it myself which indicates it is not difficult at all… Thx for this video! Grts, Marc, Belgium.

      Do you mean the soft canvas is poked outside on the edges when closed? I fixed it with the new stretching bands inside.

    Replaced the plastic gear with a well engineered brass gear from RosePassion (P615110, LH side) which is good available in Europe.

    • @HETPEZB
      @HETPEZB  2 года назад +1

      In my opinion there was a reason why the original gears were plastic. They were first prone to breaking acting as a fuse - protecting the rest of the system. May be I’m totally wrong on that.

    • @RolfNoot
      @RolfNoot 2 года назад

      Yes, I’ve heard that too. To me it doesn’t sound logic to a use plastic gear (which strength is heavily dependent on its temperature) as safeguard. Also when the gear breaks, huge forces are applied on the motor and cable. A logical reason for me is that a plastic gear on a worm drive is more silent. Force is also (well defined) limited by motor current and an electric fuse. Just my two cents..

    • @HETPEZB
      @HETPEZB  2 года назад

      Speaking about last statement about the electric current - the gear ratio in there is so huge (idk 1:100 or 1:200 or whatever) it’s virtually impossible to overload the motor. It will possibly break the cable first (or actually the plastic gear).

    • @RolfNoot
      @RolfNoot 2 года назад

      The ratio doesn’t matter. If the load on the gearbox output is twice as high, the load on the input will be as well (minus the gearbox losses which are negligible). By the way, what’s the fuzz about those metal gear replacements all about? I’ve never heard of damage caused by a metal gear while we see those plastic gears break all the time.

    • @HETPEZB
      @HETPEZB  2 года назад

      That’s the thing - if the load will be twice as high on the gearbox output it will be only 1% higher on motor with ratio 1:100 or 0.5% higher with ratio 1:200. Motor won’t feel the double load. But the plastic gear would.

    22:34 at some point you will have to fix the roof as it's folding over the side plastic instead if inside of it. It's a fairly easy fix however (especially compared to what you did in this video)

      I'm scratching my head - where you can get and collect that many pistachios in Pennsylvania? I guess they are not growing there. Unless the owner was the fan of those and constantly left them inside.

    good job!, but what a PITA. i can't imagine what it must be like to fix something on that mercedes.
    and i agree. when one side breaks it probably puts the whole load on the other one. ...it's like doing some heavy lifting work with my brother-in-law. he'll always pick the light side and STILL won't pull his weight. :)
