A little secret for easily changing the gear oil on a Boxster or Cayman without having to remove the reinforcement plate and jeopardize your alignment, drill a 2-3" hole in the plate directly below the drain plug. You can insert your socket extension straight in to it and drain through it as well. On our race cars we change it every 10 hours of track time and this makes it very quick and easy.
I was so glad to see The Car Ninja make his own RUclips channel (part of the Wichita Automotive Mafia!)! Jonny is such a cool dude with tons of knowledge, mad car skills, and a wicked sense of humor! I am still amazed that, of all places, Wichita, Kansas has such an impressive automotive scene with way more exotic cars than you would ever imagine...
Starter was a lot easier than I was led to believe to replace. Moving the oil inlet tube allowed me to get at the other bolt that many said I'd have to get at through the panel behind the seat, using a very long extended ratchet arm. took less than an hour
Just remember to disconnect the battery before removing either seat. That's most likely what caused your airbag light. Depending on how far you go with your stereo upgrade, the amp may be under the passenger seat (my 986 Boxster had it in the frunk, my 987.2 Cayman has it under the passenger seat).
Preventive maintenance is the secret recipe to keep a car up and running longer. Never bargain on maintenance, on oil or components quality, and never push it later, it would cost you so much more!
"Nobody changes gear oil". Well, I change them to all my cars when I buy them. Even the 1000-2000$/€ ones with 400-500,000kms on them (and I'm not talking about Porsches but regular 20 years old cars like Audi A4 or VW Golf or Passat with 1.9-2.0 TDI engine). But you are pretty much right, so many car owners doesn't care. Heck, even those with DSG's or Haldex systems doesn't care.
Keeping my fingers crossed for you but I wouldn't put money on the air bag light not re-appearing anytime soon. What a well sorted car and worth every dollar!
They are common on Porsches. Usually its a switch in the seat belt buckle that goes bad that causes the light to come on. I had one on my 996 that I cleared over a year ago that has not come back since.
Honestly the IMS is probably the least of your worries at this mileage. Have the ninja check the DME for overrev history and also check the camshaft deviation to gvie you an idea of how worn the chain guides are. Given the nice condition of the car I'm guessing it had meticulious oil changes so the internal plastics (and IMS bearing seal) should be in good shape. Oh and check the shifter cables too cause they like to fail. Other than that fix the supension, put a good exhaust on it, and drive the hell out of it!
The boxter is incredibly underrated. They are well made and just a pleasure to own if you know what to look for. I can't say enough good things about the platform and for such great price.
Love my 2000 986 S!!! She has 123,000 miles and she drives like a dream!! Do Basic maintenance and she is reliable!! No IMS worries here..My shocks are original too and yah they clunk a little but overall she drives like a champ 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼 ain’t nothing like a manual 986 S they are beasts!!
Thanks for making this video about your Boxster and being honest about changing your mind after driving it and enjoying the car. I've heard the same thing about this car, that there is alot of hate on this car. Well done.
Back in 2012 my oldest son was invited and given security clearance to Nellis Air Force Base. One of the Thunderbird pilots saw my son's photos from Cars & Coffee visits on weekends and tracked him down over a months time. Asked him if he would come to Nellis and photograph the pilots with their jets ... and wait for it ... they all owned a Porsche!! They pulled their cars up next to their jets for the shoot. Photos were out of this world excellent. The also had a new Mustang prototype that they allowed him to take pictures of but he had to promise not to release the photos until they announced the prototype formally. I laughed hard when you said pilots all own a Porsche. True story!!!
My offer still stands! My 911 had 275k miles when I sold it with lots of oil changes and solid maintenance. High miles don't scare me! Let me know when you're done!
I have 123000 mis on my 2010 987.2 base model. I know this is a year old but just for anyone who comes by, it's not really worth worrying too much about the IMS bearing on this vehicle. The years with the ones that were particularly problematic were mid-year 2000 through 2005. Those were the only years with the single-row bearing.

I put aviation gas in my 911 once, happened to live close to a small airport. Ran clearly better with it. I am not a pilot but there does seem to be a connection.
The radio could be just the fuse on the back of it, that's what happened to mine. Could've blown due to a battery fault or jump start, hence all the codes too.
No IMS inspection? Do you know it’s already been done? Some leave a record in the engine compartment; others leave it in but install an indicator that serves as an early warning - might want to check it out.
