- Experimenting with abstract compositions with monoprinting techniques using eggshells and plastic bags.
I'm often asked what type of plastic works best for this method of making monoprints, as you can see in this demo, recycled bags are ideal and can be used many times.
Eggshells are great to add a little bit of random textures, (sorry for any vegans watching, but the eggs are free range) Remember when using the eggs wash them and remove the thin membrane from inside.
I originally intended to go to the beach today and collect some shells to work on this demo but unfortunately a storm arrived and eggshells seemed a workable alternative.

I loved all the crinkly crunchy sounds. It was like a meditation.
I only 'found' this guy a couple of weeks ago and I copied one of his monoprint videos to the letter. I LOVE it!!! I also very much appreciate the lack of voice or music in his videos, it helps me concentrate. I have loads of plastic bags and I'm currently cutting them up to use for my next attempt. I thank him for the time and effort he puts in to share his incredible skills with others who would otherwise have to pay a fortune to go for private art lessons.
Thanks, glad you appreciate the videos, its always good to pass on a few creative tips. The use of recycled plastic is important and the more I can encourage people to try this has got to be a good thing. Never throw away and always re-use the plastic ! Good luck with your work.
Gorgeous I love this piece
Was having a complicated morning ... Threw hands up in air, made coffee and thought "Dan" ... Watched the quiet video with just sounds of crinkling etc.... Rest of day seems easy now! Thanks!
Looks more like a collagraph than a monotype. Very creative Dan, using materials everyone has on hand. Thank you for sharing.
Iv'e been describing them as monoprints for so long now that I think it just helps to find them when searching on RUclips ! Iv'e always thought of them as a type of mono-printing.
I love how the monochrome turned out and bet it would be beautiful in sepia too.
This little beauty gives the eyes a much needed break from the multitude of colors of the world.
I do like the random texture the egg shells introduce. The replacement of the shells for ghosting is great. Bravo!!
Great use for egg shells. The print is awesome. When turning the print, you stopped on the side that is my favorite. Never tire watching you create. Thanks for sharing.
Again an inviting demo for me to follow and play with . The results are simply stunning and no one can ever create the same. So,let’s go and play with your technique...bravo!
Thank you.
I absolutely love this style. Thank you for sharing

I really love your work. Wonderful imagination. I personally work with object from scrap. Congrats
Love this!! The texture and values are gorgeous. Feel inspired. Thank you for sharing.
Thank you
Thankyou! Fascinating process. I love the economy of it.
I hit LIKE as soon as the video starts: I just love your approach to printing and I know I'm going to be inspired. Tfs
Thanks very much. I appreciate your feedback.
What a great fun idea 💡
Keep 'em coming!
Interesting tutorial..i love working with all sorts of meduims to create something. Lovely....
.
Made some really beautify textures and layers.
This is excellent! Thank you!
I will try this. Greetings from Norway🇳🇴 👍
Thank you, I hope you get some good results.
Lovely result
Thank you Dan
Beautiful !!
Lost all the comments for some reason, just found them. Thanks for responding to this video, it's a technique I recommend trying, results can be mixed but worth experimenting with.
How interesting! I may try this with open acrylic paint and see what happens. I love the effects you got with the pencil too.
did you try this with acrylic?
I liked the way this was done I am going to try one of these myself. Peace and be good to each other. Stay safe stay inside flatten the curve make art!
Thank you I hope it helps.
Fantastic ! I love this.
Many thanks!
Awesome, Your work is inspiring.
I love this art man - that is some weird ass technique !
You have great ideas, it's beautiful...thank you!
you fold and store your bags the same way I do. Great video
I love this idea 😍👍👍👍👍
Very good and simple when an artist does
Dan, Dan, Dan! The egg shells made great shapes. I liked that you broke the shells on the paper and then arranged some of them.
Thanks, this only works if you remember to remove the thin membrane from inside the shell, otherwise the pieces won't separate.
You have a great imagination!
Very beautiful ! And you really seem to be enjoying it!
I am! Thanks for watching.
Really enjoying your videos, got me collecting plastic bags from the canalside :)
Wow. That is beautiful...enjoy watching your creativity.
Thank you so much 😊
Thank you, Dan😊 Watching your demos I see accurate balance in picture, despite randomness of abstraction. Composition harmony? Good idea with eggshells🙂 I tried version with wavelike textures of paper coffeecup - acrylic on oil/dvp- have ocean bottom effect as result in final textures. I used that to draw wings. The same thing with just oil paint didn't work😑 But it is still wet, after 1 one week. I added sicative by the next try to quick drying process but paint became too poor and liquid, so picture ended deem blot. Next one gonna try with paper and eggs surely.
I would try and experiment with using as little paint as possible, you can always add more but its impossible to remove. The work in this demo will be dry in 2 - 3 days.
Wonderful.
Thank you for another fantastic video! Pure genius!
Glad you enjoyed it!
I just happen to have eggshells put to one side you know as you do lol I keep them to entertain the snails and slugs this will be crunchy fun I'm fancying a very pale blue background, cheers Dan hmmm I've got some bits of seashells too might add to the mix :) your such an inspiration!
This is a really satisfying process and definitely one to experiment with, applying over a coloured background works well and will try to film a demo of this on a larger scale. Thanks for the positive feedback.
Thanks for sharing. I don't have oil paint and wonder if it will work so well with another medium. Once your paint is finally dry, do you need to seal it???
Every video of yours is AMAZING!!! I have learned SO MUCH!!! Thank you for all you do!!
Thanks very much, I appreciate your support.
great demo many thnaks
seu trabalho é inspirador
Quite intruiging. Really like making my own art supplies, made bamboo pens, styluses for silverpoint, made willow charcoal, ink from shaggy mane mushrooms. So that aspect appeals to me. But it is very different from the mediums I use. Still, worth the experiment.....
This is so cool! Thanks.
Glad you liked it!
GENIO!!!!👏👏👏
Soo cool and a very creative idea. Thank you so so much 🎨🌈🙌
My pleasure 😊
@@DanTirels and of course sub 👍😊🌈🌞💐🌿💙
I like it. So simple and nice result. I would try to add a bit of yellow to spome regions to give it more depth.
Love this. Only question: how do you keep your work area so clean? I did the charcoal, acrylic paint and made a hell of a mess... but I had a great time and it turned out pretty cool. I'm sure that now I'll have eggshells everywhere :)
That's an illusion, I often work surrounded by clutter but I've made an effort to clear a space for filming and remove everything from view of the camera, it makes it less distracting.
@@DanTirels lol the room may be a mess but your hands are clean- I can never do that!
C'est génial !!!
That was neat. I love watching your work, it inspires me. But I have to get off my butt. Thank you for the video.
Thanks for your inspiring work! I discovered your channel a few weeks ago and am very excited. The most I like is that you let us just have a look over your shoulder, it feels a bit like one is in your studio. I am looking forward to see more of your work! Greetings from Germany.
Thanks for your feedback and positive comments. I try to film the demos as naturally as possible, it takes practice to forget about the camera but I glad you enjoy the results.
When you use oil paints, are they water-based oil paints as in Windsor Newton? When you use a Q tip cotton swab thing with the oils, does it have water on it? Or, linseed oil? Or dry?
I have not used water based oil paint and never use any water on the Q tip, the techniques work better with a small amount of paint.
FABULOUS!!!
Very cool. Way to think outside the box.
Inspirational, so creative 🙏
Thank you so much!
You can use any surface that is non porous, but this is clever. Now I am going to use this technique.
Fabulous work of art to view while it is developing. Inspiration for us in this isolation time mode. Could this be done on a canvas with similar effects?
Yes this works on canvas but you need to apply a few coats of gesso to create a smooth surface first.
Awesome
Thank you so much inspirational work
You are so welcome!
While I appreciate minimal to no conversation during a tutorial I found this example could have used more verbal teaching direction. For instance I have no idea what product was used to coat the plastic bag initially- shoe polish? Was silk screen paper used? Hot pressed watercolor? Any kind of paper? The composition created was lovely however I could have used more info regarding the kinds of products used i.e.: paper used, paint/shoe polish best suited etc. Some instructors flash the product name on the screen with clear camera shot of brand and name of product. Or have a conversation with the viewers but don't talk so much. Again your piece was great and clearly you are quite talented. Thanks for making this video.
I know the lack of a voice does turn some off but I have had so many positive comments and reaction regarding the silence. I will try to be more informative in the videos and will consider filming a product intro at the beginning of each demo. I try to list all products used in the description. I want the videos to be a real representation of the way I work, almost forgetting that the camera is turned on. As always improvements can be made. Thanks for your feedback.
your work is inspiring
Thank you
Nice. I like it
Glad you like it
Vielen Dank !
Bitte noch viele solcher Videos 👍
Ölfarbe, steht in der Beschreibung.
Very interesting work. I want to try, but only have acrylics. Would that work?
Yes it can work with acrylics but it sometimes helps if you use a retarder to slow the slow down the drying time.
Muito bom!
Qué bello trabajo
Muchas gracias
Very interesting. I love the shapes. Do you use black medium for lino printing?
geniale idee
dan do you have a vid on how you make your little frame set up that your paper canvas sits in?
I will film a quick demo for this as I'm often asked and it's really simple but very handy to know.
Dan Tirels Thanks Dan for the great idea with eggshells, and I'm looking forward to how making the frame, because I already wasted a lot of cardbord to finally get one for using it several times ...🤔
I loved your broken pieces of eggshells technique💖 and tried it too, at the same time I got my own idea of creating an art by dropping candle wax on the paper in a random design then doing the monoprinting with few colours of choice and in the end scrapping away the dropped wax... Plz try this and let me know how u find this💁
Sounds great! I like that idea and will experiment with this, wax has lots of possibilities and I have used it before.
Thank you for your response, Plz let me be informed when u try the wax idea, so that I won't miss the video 🙋😊
Eggshells are amazing nutrients for the soil and plants.
Fabulous. Is that black oil paint straight from a tube?
I'm putting together some monoprinting kits which will include these small sample tins of oil paint, taken from a larger tube of Winsor & Newton oil paint Winton range.
wow. awesome idea and technique. thanks for sharing.
was that a black shoe polish you used out of the Tin can ?.
No the small tin just contains oil paint, I sometime do this because it is more easy to use than the tubes.
Bello ma perche non commenti? Che inchiostro hai usato?
What is the black you used on the plastic great work.
What ink do you use?
Beautiful work! I suppose you can also use other colors besides black ... for example, add something terracotta or cobalt blue... Congrats!
Yes that would work, I always see these demos as a starting point and hope they encourage experimentation.
Trash to treasure! This would be a great art project for ‘outdoor school’ week. Add a few small twigs or leaves and a voila a nice memento. I love how you create with what you have at hand!
Thanks, I think this would be a great project and has lots of possibilities, it's always good to make use of things around you, and encourages you to look at things in a new way. Thanks for your positive comments.
Beauty from castoffs...and I am sure the calcium imparted adds nutritional value! Such a nice way to create rock formations
Oui
