You are a genius, Dan. Even if I can not make something similar like this, time still well spent watching you create. Love your videos. Your style, your easy to follow demos, your silence while working is so relaxing, peaceful and enjoyable. Your videos themselves fall into the category of art. Thank you very much. Please, let this videos keep coming!
Oh Dan, WOW: yet another brilliant video and extraordinarily good art - each rectangle is a mini masterpiece - you could cut them up and sell each one if you wanted - but so good together too! For me = perfect with no sound, just tearing paper+, calm, lovely. And watching you work is like watching a dance or a bird in flight: light, airy, fluid. Thank you so much for making this and putting it up here - and for sharing (teaching us) how you do it. You really inspire me!
Jenny Hughes Thanks very much, I hope that the videos are a useful guide to anyone wanting to explore creativity and to try a few new techniques. I appreciate your positive response.
Thank you for sharing. Yes I feel that by not having any distraction like music, I tuned into the painting. I had to laugh because I was telling you "a little piece there" and you place one, "now a little piece in that space" and you did it. LOL. I loved the end result! 😊
Betty Taylor Thank you, I really appreciate your positive feedback for the demo. I hope that you get some good results if you give this a try. Thanks for watching.
It is a cold Saturday morning here in Dallas. I knew how I wanted to celebrate my morning. I am watching this video for the umpteenth time with a cup of coffee. What a sumptuous moment! Thank you Dan Tirels for these beautiful, inspiring videos.
Margaret Hogan Thanks so much, I'm very pleased that you found this video of interest. I hope to post a new one soon. I tried to work on a new one today but unfortunately the light faded too fast.
Thanks for the positive comments on the demo. I'm pleased you find it useful and hope you get some good results trying out this technique. Thanks for watching.
I was mesmerised by this process, very relaxing to watch. The anticipation of the big reveal was well worth waiting for too. I think this is a great sensory activity, I can modify this technique to suit the children in my class. Can't wait. Soapy water at the ready !!!!!
jayRichardo Thanks I'm pleased that you enjoyed this demo, it's a great process and can get some great results, I think for a childrens art class it is an ideal exercise and hopefully it can spark off lots of creativity. I've some new ideas coming soon that should be worth a try. Thanks for watching.
Gosh, thanks for your response! .. I am inspired and by using recyclable stuff like the pizza boxes - too cool - and makes it affordable for folks such as myself to try. Watched a few of your other videos and not sure why but they make me so happy to watch ... Strange, but so a big bag of thanks for your generosity of putting your work online!
Great work, Dan. Love the process and love the result. Only wish you made a lot more videos. Best 15 minutes I've spent in ages. Gripping stuff! Thanks so much.
D G Thanks glad you liked the video, hope it helps, it's a great technique to experiment with. Sorry for not posting more videos, I've been trying to get my website sorted. I filmed a new demo today so that will be posted soon.
Enjoyed this also. Thank you for sharing. I love the results, very atmospheric and the scratched surface brings to mind scars we endure in the process of living, mental or physical. Grateful viewer in Ireland, on the cold West coast, Frances.
Frances Elizabeth van Velzen Thanks very much, your positive response to the demos are appreciated, I hope that you are inspired to try the techniques and experiment with your own work. Thanks for watching.
Frances Elizabeth van Velzen = yes, I agree! But also the patina of old things that we treasure: worn and loved. I'm a grateful (english) viewer living near the med (LOTS of blue skies = makes me feel better than UK too-much-grey) in south-east France. All the best to you.
Enjoyable to watch and very ingenious technique. Will try it but only using acrylic since I don't use oils. Thank you, will watch all your other videos to enhance my painting education.
Bernice Seigel Thanks for your support and interest for these demo videos, I hope they help. This technique does work with acrylic, you just need to work faster ! Or you could add something to slow down the drying time (I've used acrylic silk screen medium)
Just found you, and love this demo! Subscribed, and now off to discover more on your channel. Thank you so much for sharing this Dan, it may save me all the time and labour I spend with scratching and sanding to get a similar effect. Also it's a great way to stimulate composition ideas.
Alan P I really appreciate your positive feedback for this demo, I've always found it a great technique to develop ideas and it's a very satisfying process to experiment with. I'm experimenting with different surfaces at the moment and hope to have dome large scale demos in the future. Thanks for watching.
Candace Troy Thanks. I find this a great technique to experiment with and it is a great way to inspire ideas for large scale compositions. Thanks for watching.
Wonderful video. Love the process, you make it look so easy, and yet it’s not easy to get the wonderful results you get. Love the silence, felt as if I had the privilege to hang out with you in your studio
Brian Kirchoff - The Voiceover Page Thanks for the response to the video, it's appreciated. I know these videos have a few thumbs down but I suppose you can't please everyone !
Thanks for sharing your talent Dan, you've inspired me. I can't draw a cat but I like to try abstract paintings and love this style. Subbed and working my way through your vids.
Thanks, I like to think that anyone could have a try at these techniques, you can always develop your drawing skills but sometimes it's good to just make a few marks. Thanks for watching.
Jeanne Heywood Thanks, good luck I hope you get some great results. This is a technique that takes a bit of practice but it's worth the effort. Thanks for your feedback on the video.
I have tried various surfaces and find a smooth heavyweight card works best approx 200gsm, too much texture doesn't work well with this technique. You can use canvas if you apply 3 - 4 coats of gesso (smooth with sandpaper) Hopd this helps. Thanks for watching.
Fascinating process and result, thanks. I like the no music, though maybe a bit of explanation would be useful - what kind of paper at the start and is that water on the sponge? Could this work with other kinds of paint/ink?
whodoyoulove08 Thanks, I appreciate your comments. I will try and update the description on the video with more info on materials used. Please DON'T use water in the sponge it would be a disaster with oil based paint. The paper used is 160gsm smooth white card, this works fine but thinner paper will absorb more oil and may not work as well. You can also use paper that is specifically made for working with oil paint, this tends to have a canvas like surface. The slow drying properties of oil make this process work, experiment with water based paints or inks. Silkscreen acrylic medium added to acrylic paint also works.
whodoyoulove08 That is plastic used at the beginning for the transfer sheet (use old recycled carrier bag) The sponge is dry, don't use anything other than the paint.
Thanks for the wonderful - and quiet - video. Don't know anything about painting but this really inspires me to try. Do you put the paint on wax paper or is it a tissue paper or could be any lightweight paper? Thanks Dan!
i just love it! please let me know if we can use acrylic paint instead of oil, as we can not see the way you apply the paint on plastic sheets, do you do this by using brushes?
You can try this method with acrylic but the paint has a fast drying time, you can brush the paint onto plastic or use a pallet knife. You could also use a retarder to slow down the drying process of the acrylic paint. Thanks for watching the videos.
A lovely demonstration, thank you for posting. Approximately how long will it take though for these to dry as I assume they are pure oil paints and not water based/quick drying?
Thanks for your positive comments. Because I work with very thin layers of paint they do dry very quickly, I never use thinner and try to use a 200gsm paper. Gesso can be used but is not always necessary.
Thanks for the reply. I am first and foremost a photographer, but this year I am going to incorporate macroscapes into your style of oil painting. At some point, I will add a soundtrack to them. Wish me luck.
Gorgeous! I've used oil pastel and printing ink on greaseproof paper, using masking tape and low odour white spirit to try get a similar effect ( but not as good). I love the idea of a more permanent grid stencil. I am now inspired. Did you use a special material to make yours?
Alex Coppock-Bunce Thanks for comments and positive feedback, I'm pleased you enjoyed the demo and found it of use. This makes a great wipe clean surface that is thin enough to give close contact with the work surface, much cheaper than regular stencil card and can be used many times.
Dan Tirels I gave it a go today on linen canvas and I think it worked. It's of a Placa in Palma de Mallorca, near to where I live and it looks pretty good but not sure if I'll think the same way in the morning. Wish I could show you!!
InfiniFi I've tried this technique on stretched canvas but find that it works best if you apply 3 coats of gesso to remove the weave of the canvas. I will post a new demo of this soon. Also I'm hoping to add a page to my website so anyone can submit a piece of work that they created after watching these demos. (I will add information on the website) Thanks for watching.
Dan Tirels Oh gosh, that sounds good, putting viewers works onto your website I mean. I use a fine grain linen canvas and applied two thick coats of gesso. I went too dark with the blending after the 1st tissue print so I used a white line with a fine brush for the 2nd tissue stage and it's help to bring back the black/white into balance. It took me ages to set it all up but the final result is satisfying so I'd say it's very worth it!! Thank you very much Dan
