  • I've returned to the format of my Moon landing monoprint from a few weeks ago. This one is slightly shorter as I've created it for a frame I have and it will be hanging on my wall soon (once dry)
    28" × 8.5" oil on 200gsm paper.
    Working with recycled materials (plastic bag and cardboard) I have used oil paint (Prussian Blue, Vandyke Brown) spread thinly onto a transfer sheet made from an old plastic bag and a variety of mark making implements, blunt pencil, biro, etc to transfer the oil paint onto the work surface (200gsm paper) Torn paper (newspaper is OK) is then used to mask areas of the composition and create shapes that form the light areas of the artwork, it is advisable not to apply too much paint and keep these interesting forms that draw the eye into the composition.
    It is important to begin this process with a very thin first layer of paint and work towards adding darker tones, remember not to overwork the composition as it is very easy to destroy the quality of the marks. Don't worry to much about the final composition, enjoy making a few interesting marks and texture, practice the technique and good results will follow.
    Hope you found this demo helpful.
    List of materials :
    Oil paint (Winsor & Newton) Prussian Blue, Vandyke Brown
    Recycled cardboard, plastic bag, parcel tape.
    Pallet knife, blunt pencil, Q tips, rag or sponge for mark making.
    Pallet knife (plastic) to transfer the oil paint onto the plastic sheet.
    Paper (at least 200gsm)
    masking tape, torn scap paper (newspaper)
    gloves recommended and turpentine for cleaning.

    Beautiful and I agree with another viewer - please show us the finished, framed piece hanging....would love to see this and other framed pieces.
    I also got caught up in the “message” on the recycled bag: (*do) The Work.....what will you discover (*create)....I’m kind of “nerdy woo-woo” like that😂

      Yes try acrylic paint with a retarder added to slow the drying time.

    Loving your work Dan - I've spent hours watching your videos now I need to invest in some oil paints to give it a go. I've scrolled through a few of the comments but have yet to find out what paper you prefer to print on. In places it looks like Yupo as the paint slides so well.

    • @DanTirels
      @DanTirels  5 лет назад +2

      I use a 200gsm smooth card for the smaller monoprints (available at most craft shops often used by card makers)
      For the larger work I use a heavyweight cartridge paper 200gsm) This technique works better with a smoother surface. Thanks for watching.

    What type paper do you use for the acrylic paint ? and do you use canvas for your oil prints.? I absolutely love your work and the simplicity. I’m going to try with my small group of children in my home studio. Thanks Dan.

    • @DanTirels
      @DanTirels  5 лет назад

      Yes just a recycled plastic bag, the cardboard strip is used to wrap the plastic around when dry so it can be used many times. Thanks for watching.

    • @DanTirels
      @DanTirels  5 лет назад +1

      This will probably take a few days as the oil paint is quite thick in places, I will leave it a week before I put it into the frame.

    Hello Dan, where did you get the blue color you're using with the little sponge? Do you put the front color on the sponge or is it in the color already on the sheet? In which case why is only blue spreading and not black? Thank you. Thank you.

    • @DanTirels
      @DanTirels  5 лет назад

      All the paint is applied to the paper or card only, the sponge is used to lightly blend to add shading and depth. The oil paint I'm using is a mixture of Prussian Blue and Vandyke Brown (not black) hope this helps.

    • @johnjack5417
      @johnjack5417 5 лет назад

      Dan Tirels ok! Thanks. But so Why is it the blue only and not the Brown which appear to shade ??? 🙄😊😊😊😊

    This is amazing! Is the sponge soaked in Terpentin?

    • @DanTirels
      @DanTirels  5 лет назад +1

      No this is just a dry sponge, this technique would not work using thinners, just paint nothing else.

    Is it possible to do this with acrylic paint, or does it dry too fast?

    • @Foto22417
      @Foto22417 5 лет назад

      I was wondering the same. I don't know the answer but I know there's something called acrylic retarder that keeps the paint wet for longer. I think it'd be worth a try!
