I have tried to show with this acrylic monoprinting demo how you can achieve a wide range of marks and interesting textures. Unlike oil paint acrylic does require careful application and can be difficult to work with due to the fast drying times. Additional mediums can be added that will slow this down but none have been used in this demo. Recycled art projects.
The monoprinting technique works best on a smooth surface so the canvas panel has had at least 4 coats of primer. There are many videos on RUclips that demonstrate this surface treatment and depending on the type of primer used it can be brushed on or spread with a pallet knife to achieve the desired surface, use a damp sponge to remove the weave of the canvas and allow each coat to dry. You are looking to achieve a working surface that is similar to a smooth cartridge paper.
Before I begin this work I select the colours for the composition by painting on scrap paper to see how they work together, pick complimentary colours and try not to use too many. This painting uses just 5 colours.
    Method :
Begin with the lightest colour (Yellow Ochre). Because this is an abstract work I have not drawn anything on the canvas to start, but this technique can be used with landscape, figurative or still life and for this I would always begin with a rough pencil drawing. Apply a thin layer of paint onto the plastic transfer sheet and then carefully begin to apply onto the canvas. Use various degrees of pressure with your fingers or soft rag, use a blunt pencil or cotton bud to achieve lines and texture, be careful not to overwork at this early stage and keep some of the canvas free from paint, this empty space begins to form the base layer of the composition. Allow each layer of paint to dry before proceeding. Take care when using the black paint as this can sometimes deaden the composition, if this happens allow to dry then apply a lighter colour over the black. For the final layer of paint I have mixed 2 tones, a light and dark version of the same colour, this is done to achieve a texture and to prevent areas of the composition becoming too dominant. I complete this work using a hand cut stencil to add a random pattern, I often use this in compositions to add interest within all the textures but try not to overuse it and if it doesn't work apply paint to cover. The stencil is cut from scrap card.
When finished apply a couple of coats of acrylic matt varnish.
    Materials :
Stretched canvas 20" x 20" primed with 4 coats of primer to achieve a highly smooth surface.
    Paint :
    Winsor & Newton Galeria Acrylic
Yellow Ochre, Cadmium Red, Cadmium Yellow, Cerulean Blue, White, Black.
Rags, sponge, cotton buds, bamboo skewers.

@Dan Tirels Greetings from the USA! I would love to get a print of this particular piece but I was unable to find it on your website. Can you please tell me if it’s possible to get a print of this absolutely incredible epic masterpiece? What is so amazing about your art, which there are countless amazing things, is how many elements can be depicted if one truly studies this piece, which to me it’s just an incredibly awesome form of art all its own! Truly, what you do is so unique leaving each finished work as a OOAK (one of a kind) piece that goes on telling its story forever. If I look long enough, I can see all sorts of scenes, elements, pieces, depictions, etc. taking abstract art to a whole new level of pure utter bliss! Although I am a graphics artist for 20+ years, I am mostly on the newer side of painting. I just now got my painting studio set up with all my supplies and I’m ready to begin my new adventure, and I would love it if the very first piece of art that I display on the wall in my art room for inspiration is this piece right here that you so eloquently, beautifully and masterfully brought to life in this video! I am absolutely in love with it! It’s beyond perfect! Please let me know if you get a chance… Thank you so very much!

Wow! That's some response to this video, I thank you for such a positive view of this piece. I know what you mean when you describe seeing many things within the painting, one of the joys of this process is the journey that your work takes, it is often a surprise and it doesn't always work out the way you expect. I hope it provides you with encouragement and inspiration. You will find a link to my Teespring shop below the video. The title of the painting is Effervescence and it is now available as a poster in 2 sizes and also as a Tee shirt in various colours.Thank you for your interest and support of my work, all feedback is always appreciated.

Dan Tirels Awesome! Thank you so much! And yes that is what is so amazing about your technique… It’s like a ton of different elements and scenes shine through what some people might view as just abstract chaos, but I see many pictures it’s awesome… Please keep up the great work! Thanks again and God bless!!!

Hi Dan--Thank you for inviting and allowing us to view some of your techniques for producing your artwork. During the creation process, you produce your own rhythm, tempo, timbre and beat while letting the materials and momentary feelings extend into a reproduce-able period on substrate. Thank you for sharing the journey.

      @DanTirels  4 года назад +1

Thank you very much for your positive comments. I try to film the videos so they are an accurate representation of the creative process rather than a " How to" video, it isn't always easy to explain the intuitive way I create some of these artworks but I hope that by filming in a certain way it represents an edited version of this technique. Thanks for watching.

I saw your video and couldn't wait to try it out. I decided to use the same color scheme and got to work. Once I had 3/4 or so of the painting done, I stood back and looked. I was disappointed with it as it had no redeeming qualities at all the way yours did. I'm impatient and wanted the very first attempt at this new technique to be a home run. I turned it 90 degrees. Still awful. I turned it 90 degrees more. WOW! I couldn't believe what I was seeing. There, plain as day was the image of George Washington. It lacked detail, but was definitely him. I added some detail and a flag using your technique for all of it. I am so happy with how it came out. I wish I could upload a pic. Thanks, Dan. I've now watched many more of your instructional videos and am learning a lot.

This is a very cool idea for backgrounds! I wonder...when the back ground is complete, you can do something similar with a black paint on you plastic sheet and do like a line sketch of maybe a nude, and "draw" or trace a picture. You should get a similar effect to a mono-type print. Very cool idea indeed. Thanks for sharing!!

I usually use gel plates to do monoprinting, but this technique has been on my list to try for a while, and watching this video has given me more inspiration.
I wasn't sure about the blue, I felt it was too solid, so was glad to see you broke it up with the black. Love the finished piece! Have subscribed.

Thanks, I always like to see how these works progress, the colours are all worked out and planned before I begin, the end result is often a surprise and does lead on to other compositions.

I love the serendipity of monoprinting. It's something you can't get with a brush.
