Dan, during the covid crisis, I started painting mainly simple abstract things with acrylics (I guess beginner stuff with palette knife). I have been getting all my inspiration/instruction on youtube from artists such as yourself. Your techniques are so interesting and alien to me (that is a compliment). Thank you so much for sharing. I am working on 2 projects inspired by you and I am looking at Klee now who I like very much. I wish you much success in life. Ramon
Thank you very much for your kind comments, it gives me a lot of encouragement to know that many have found inspiration from these videos. I wish you luck on your creative journey.
Again you surprise me with a different way of using art materials! You have a way of simply showing us how you work, what your thought processes are in producing your art. Thanks, Dan. You are an inspiration.
Paul Klee is one of my favourite artists, (I have so many!) Thank you for showing an easy way in to being able to produce similar works of one of his periods / styles. It's a little like unlocking magic for me. Thank you so much.
Glad you enjoyed it! Thanks Gordon, I enjoy this technique and I hope it does encourage others to have a go. It is also very fast and instant and I think sometimes that is a big help. Hope you get good results, I'm sure you will !
I've now tried this technique and I found that I had to leave the oil paint quite wet - it absorbs into the paper so isn't difficult to handle. Also, I used very light pressure with my pencil and got a clear and excitingly 'free' result. Thank you again for posting this instructive video :-)
Hi Dan, thanks so much for demonstrating this technique - I really appreciate it. I'm definitely going to have a go at this today. You have the knack for showing me/us these methods in such an unpretentious & gentle way. Hard to put in to words really. I actually love the fact that you don't talk on your videos - hope you're not offended by that mate! I'm certainly no expert on art but I know what I like & I've been a big fan of Paul Klee for years & have several books about him. I'd never actually seen any of his works 'in the flesh' until about 15 years ago when I visited the mumok in Vienna & I stumbled upon some of his paintings by surprise - I'm not ashamed to say that I shed a few tears. Thanks again Dan.
Thanks for your suggestion, this demo has been really well received and has had lots of positive feedback. I'm sure that many will enjoy discovering this technique and find out a little more info about the work of Klee. I have tried to film demos speaking as I work, but I find them annoying and the voice seems to act as a distraction, If I show some technique in detail and film in close up, I don't feel the need to describe exactly what I am doing. I have had a good response to the lack of talking so won't be changing. Hope you get some good results from this process, It's a great one to experiment with.
Thank you Dan! I loved watching your Paul Klee inspired vid, so relaxing, inspiring and now I want to try this and also a great start to the vid showing Klee's work! So beautiful.
This is so cool. I have Galleria canvas paper and all other equipment, so got to have a go with this technique. I love resist work like this! Thanks so much for sharing. Hope you're safe and well.
@@DanTirels Hi Dan, hope you're doing well. I have done some stuff and posted about it over on my student blog here: janicescottpop1log.com/2020/05/14/part-3-project-1-exercise-2-linear-figure-study-experiments/ I have credited you, so i hope this is okay? Thanks for the massive inspirations.
Thank you for responding to my request. While I tried unsuccessfully with some of your other techniques with watercolors ( too much water) I am very excited to try this one. You are always opening new ideas and helping create unusual methods with wonderful results. Thank you again.
i started watching you demos when all you were doing was simple mono prints and have continued to follow your demos ever since, you never fail to impress and inspire me to grow in my art work thank you looking forward for more from you
Wow, thank you. It is always good to be able to pass on a few artistic tips and guide people on their own creative journeys. I hope you get some good results with this process. Thanks for watching.
Muito Bom. Eu sempre gostei de Paul Klee, que juntamente com o Kandinsky formavam uma dupla invejável na Arte Moderna...! Agora o seu trabalho fantástico como sempre.
Inspirational. Materials I captured the Daley & Rowley [Oil?] paint and A4 Cass Art Acid Free Oil & Acrylic Free paper. What was the paper you used to apply the oil to? And the type of 'masking' tape?
The paint transfer paper is just plain photo copy paper (any thin smooth paper will work) The masking tape is Frog tape but use any good quality tape. Hope this helps.
This is a wonderful tutorial. I don't have oil paint, but do have a black Shiva Oil Paint Stick. I scribbled some of that on deli paper and used it to transfer the lines. Worked like a charm!
Thanks for this sharing! Its really inspired and just what I want to learn as I was reading books about Paul Klee and has mentioned this technique, but I can't find much about this on the web. I tried to do something similar and your demonstration about using kitchen paper to rub black paint on the photocopy paper is supper and better then using a roller (in my case). Using your method, I save a lot of time cleaning up the mess with the roller.
Thanks, I'm glad you enjoyed this demo and found it useful. The response to this particular technique has been very positive and I will try to film another showing how you can use this same method on a larger canvas. Thanks for watching and I hope you get some excellent results with this process.
Hi Dan. Love this method. You helped me out of a creative funk recently with it. 💙 When will your monoprinting booklet be available to buy again please? Thank you. Love your work, you walk a fine line between being precise and meticulous, yet still somehow fluid and loose. Its very interesting to watch you at work. So inspired by you. 🙏
It will be available again soon, I have had a few difficulties with the shipping service which has been complicated when the UK left the EU. I will add them to the website shop once this is sorted out. Glad to hear that you find inspiration from the videos.
I also notice that you put hardly any pressure on your pencil to get a really good line of oil paint appearing. This suggests to me that the oil paint is still quite open. Am I right?
As I am a burning fan of Paul Klee, my heart beats when I discover your excellent video. Thank you so much!!! To have nice results with such an easy technique makes me to start quickly. But the oil-colour is Daler Rowney what? Could not read in the video. Often I can go to the ZPK in Bern (Zentrum Paul Klee), heartbeating and with tears in the eyes, when I can see the Art of Paul Klee.
Thank you so much for your very positive review of this demo, I'm pleased that you found it useful. This is a fantastic technique to begin experimenting with. The oil paint you see me using is Ivory Black from the Georgian range by Daler Rowney, but just use any good quality paint and you will get good results. Thanks for watching.

So first you make marks on the canvas to transfer the oil paint marks and then you paint over it with watercolor? Do you have to wait for the oil painted marks to dry first?
This is part of the process and will help to produce a slightly smudged line. This will depend on the oil paint used and you might need to allow the paint to dry a little first.
Hi Dan, you are such an excellent teacher, thank you. Is the oil paint dry when you add the water color? Could you use acrylic ink or watered down acrylic paint? Thank you for your inspiration.
Thank you, I have yet to try this with acrylic or ink, but I don't see why it would not achieve the same results. The reason I used watercolour paint was because I wanted to follow the techniques of Paul Klee. I appreciate your comments and positive feedback.
As everyone says, your videos are inspiring. Thank you for sharing your ideas and techniques. Could I ask please about the surface /paper you’ve used for these Paul Klee inspired works ? And does the surface need any preparation such as acrylic or PVA ? Thanks, Sue

HA! Just bought some products to try this! Thank you for the inspiration!! Question: How do you frame this type of canvas? I'm thinking I could just "glue" it to a larger gallery wrapped canvas for the appearance of a large "mat"???
The examples in this demo are painted on paper, it does have a slight grain so has the look of canvas. This would need to be framed behind glass. I think it is advisable to frame any work using watercolour with a protective cover of glass or PVC. I will try to film a new demo of this technique working on canvas. Thanks for the feedback.
Dan - thank you so much for this! It is exactly the information I was looking for and the technique I wanted to know more about. How wet/dry was the black oil paint on the paper before you placed it face down on the painting paper? It looked fairly wet to me but it's hard to tell from a photograph.
I did try it with more water and a softer brush that helped enormously and I also decided to try and use watercolor ink instead of watercolor paint because it's more vibrant I love how it turned out thank you!
Hi, Dan) Thanx for sharing asalways. I'm searching for the best way for background textures for oil canvas 1.5*1.2m, trying most of your ways now. But the scale of canvas and paint(it's wet-wet-wet) and 03.05.2020 is deadline🙀 Oh...
Sounds great! This technique would work well on a large canvas but I would try using an acrylic paint wash over the oil paint. I may film this in a future demo.
Thank you for sharing, Dan. It is inspiring as always. The mixture from hydrophobic and hydrophilic paints has astonishing results. One question: How long does the oil transfer sheet works? (temperature around 20°C, normal air moisture) you made the 3 pictures without refreshing the oil paint on the sheet?
Hi Sabine, This is a very simple technique but the results are really interesting and I hope this demo will encourage others to give it a try. The transfer sheet will last for a while and can be reused many times. After each artwork simply smooth over the paint to remove previous marks, add a little more oil paint if needed. You can even let the sheet dry out altogether and just add paint to use again. Hope you have some good results.
Dan, I am wondering what kind of paint you use here. Is it water color, looks like it. I too have watched all your videos and so enjoy them, I just love your style and method. I have done some cards with your method too, and though not up to par yet, thoroughly enjoyed the process and the outcome.

It doesn't work with acrylic paint as this dries too fast, the black oil paint could be replaced with oil pastel or something similar.
@@DanTirels I wonder if you could use slow dry for an acrylic transfer? I'm sure the texture would look very different.

apply light pressure only
always my pleasure

So first you make marks on the canvas to transfer the oil paint marks and then you paint over it with watercolor? Do you have to wait for the oil painted marks to dry first?
No because dragging the watercolour over the wet oil paint creates this blurred line effect.
Are you watercoloring directly over the wet oil paint? Surprised the oil color doesn’t pick up and move around. Guess I’ll have to try this myself!

How did he transfer oil on paper or linen without rotting the surface, to create watercolors?
Use very little oil paint and if possible remove excess oil by mixing on paper, you could leave it to dry a little first.

HA! Just bought some products to try this! Thank you for the inspiration!! Question: How do you frame this type of canvas? I'm thinking I could just "glue" it to a larger gallery wrapped canvas for the appearance of a large "mat"???

Not too much, try experimenting on scrap paper to start.
What kind of paint did you use? It looked like you let it dry before you used it like carbon paper?
The carbon paper is made with a thin layer of oil paint (do not let this dry) Overlay with a wash of watercolour paint.

Hello Dan. Can I replace oil paint with another type of paint such as acrylic mixed with a retardant or even use carbon paper?
I don't think you would get the same effect. The oil paint produces the characteristic features as you paint over with the water-based paint.
Oh, i think correct english is inspiring...😉
Thank you! 😃
