again, thank you so much, Dan. isolation is difficult here in the US as well. I have found your videos to be a comfort, challenge and stimulating. Please continue to post your demonstrations . God Bless.
This is a brilliant and inspired piece of art using materials one does not associate with fine art. I'm watching your videos in reverse order after discovering your channels, so I've already viewed your newer Chalkola demonstrations and find with each new demo, the process grows in appeal and inspiration. I itch to see you combine these markers with your signature oil paint monoprinting because it seems they would go so well together. Thank you very much for the inspiring demonstration of your unique process and genius.
Spellbinding! Thank you so much for taking the time to share your talent in your artistic approach and your video editing. This truly stands the test of time.
Thankyou. So much to say not enough word's. I shared this with my therapist, the combination of art being created, the perfect music and the crinkle sounds of paper and wax paper.... Well done sir.
Wow, thank you! I am very please to hear that you find this demo helpful, it is always good to receive such positive comments and feedback. Thanks for watching (and listening)
I came back to this channel again. In the process of completing the work, your persistence and challenge spirit can be seen. And how much you care about your work. I don’t know how well the Google Translator communicates my thoughts, but your work is great.
I have a million ideas running through my head after watching this...love how a delicate touch can create a powerful piece. Thanks for sharing your talent.
Love your marks, Dan. So mesmerizing watching the painting develop. You surprised me at every turn. Loving the end result as well. Thanks so much for sharing your process.
You are truly a Blessing Dan! As the situation here in the states grows worse, I am in north Texas and cases are increasing just south and east of my community, I continue to report to work to help our employees cope, your videos are a definite release from the stress! Yesterday I came home to find your book in my mailbox....decided to very slowly and consciously absorb it word by word 😊 Take care, stay healthy, keep calm & wash your hands! Sending prayers, hugs and gratitude 🥰 This piece is very reminiscent of a Basquiat!
Thanks very much for your kind words, this is a very worrying time for all of us and I know that many are finding this enforced isolation difficult. I really do hope that these videos can help to relieve some of the stress in a small way. I am pleased to hear that the booklet reached you as postal disruption is continuing. I hope you enjoy looking through it and that it is a good compliment to the videos. I send best wishes to you and your fellow Americans and hope most of all that this frightening situation will improve and we can all return to normality as soon as possible.
Hello, I am so glad I happened onto your channel. I have watched 4 of your videos and am enjoying each one. This technique for me is very unique and stylish as well. I will watch more and will venture into this realm of art very soon. From Central Texas a big thank you! A Texas Gal !!!
Aaaahhhhh........ Another great video and print. Black gesso background is very good choice. Again, your videos are so calming...your movements slow and mindful. Different from so many other art videos with flapping hands, tapping, waving, scary claw-like fingers, and all the unnecessary talking and goings on. Thank you.
Thanks for the feedback, It is always good to get positive comments for the videos. I do try as much as possible to film them so they reflect my day to day working methods, I almost try to forget about the camera, talking and describing everything I do would just become too distracting I feel.
Thank you so much for the fabulous tutorial. You have my creative juices flowing and I am about to start a new canvas. Perfect timing in this very, very strange world.
Well that’s just lovely 😊 all the mark making looks like you were enjoying your chalk paint . The black gesso is great as a base like aboriginal paintings, it works really well with your colours.. great image🌈
Love your videos Dan. Have done a couple monoprinting since I started watching you and find them great fun. Being in a lockdown gives us plenty of time to try new things. Stay safe and healthy.
I’ve gotten behind in my videos, but glad I found this one. It seems I always learn something new with you, Dan. I’m looking forward to giving the chalk markers a try. Thanks for sharing.
I bought a small selection of chalk markers, a few days ago. Unfortunaltley, some were unbranded and not a patch on the Uniball ones. I didn't have great success.with them. This is a very inspiring demo. I'm going to have another try in the next few days. I've got plently of time at home. Haven't we all?
I'm still finding my way with these but I really enjoy working with them. I do recommend trying the black gesso on canvas it has a good effect on the colours as they seem brighter.
@@DanTirels Thanks, I will. I have a stretched canvas in my studio. I think Anne has black gesso. Just now, I'm trying to create 3D Zero Art styles on the computer. I wonder why our small village has groups of young teens walking about thrwoing rubish bins around? What are the parents doing in these dark days? Sigh
Mesmerising! Great filming and editing, resulting in a lovely meditative rhythm. And thanks for the jointing knife tip. I’ve often used a broad silicone bladed tool in an effort to get the gesso good and smooth, but it doesn’t take long for the the tooth of the gesso to wear the silicone edge noticeably.
Hi. I've just found your live . I'm very surprised your idea .I love your way to print . I definitely want to try this method in the near future. Thank you so much.
Reminds me of a Weever fish, it's getting more and more tempting to get those chalk markers I really like how they work for mono printing, thank you Dan :)
Thank you. I really like how this turned out, very organic and the process allows the work to evolve and grow unexpectedly. I am still working with the chalk markers and will continue to experiment with them, but I can really recommend trying them for yourself.
Just “found” you and am inspired! As an abstract artist, I absolutely appreciate that you show and share so much! Yes, truly inspired...especially in this time of isolation. Thank you!
Thank you so much! Really glad you have discovered the channel, I hope you feel inspired. It is such a distressing time for all of us and I think a little creative activity offers at least some escape. Thanks for watching.
That was so interesting to see the best I have seen you do. I saw why you went back and yet sometimes I thought it was done. I often find myself tarting the subject up to gain strength and beauty, but again that is all in our minds. Again so impressive and thanks a ton. I want to get started but paints are expensive, any ideas where to go and what about enamels, etc. Oils seem to take so long to dry, need tips lol...
If you use oil paint for mono printing or paint transfer that you see in some of the techniques I show in the demos the paint will dry fast so don't be put off by this. Start with just a few colours first, try charcoal for sketching which is an excellent medium to work with. Try to buy a few tubes of good quality paint rather than a big set of cheap paints, it will be worth it. Good luck, and thanks for watching.
Relaxing, awesome and inspirational - the best ways for times like this - you are a talented artist and magician. Is Gesso paint the best and only paint to use with the Chalkola markers?? Love the plastic bag process, have used this once before with acrylic paint and will use it again after watching this video.
Thanks very much, this was my first time using the black gesso with the chalk markers and I was surprised how well it worked, I think it will be worth trying a few different surfaces. Hope you get some good results.
Just stumbled onto your demo videos.....brilliant! Can't wait to try this. The best thing to come out of this virus lockdown is more time spent in my studio. Cheers.
Thank you !!! I have been reluctant to make use of on-line purchasing, and I'm afraid now it's too late... I don't think deliveries are possible any more... do anyone know ?? I have read that Amazon & Co have restricted their deliveries ?!?!
I think ebay is OK, delivery time may be delayed slightly butalways check the website for more info. It is good to support small art shops that have online sales.
Hi Dan, after coming back home from Australia a year ago I was experimenting with chalk markers and made some dot painting on black paper, which was big fun. My unbranded chalk markers dry very quick. Interesting that yours are wet Long enough that you are able to print with the transfer foil. By the way, did you ever thought about making collages with the used transfer foils?
Hi Sabine, I hope things are well with you in Germany under these very worrying times for all of us. I really enjoyed working on this video and I'm starting to get used to working with the chalk markers. Because they are designed for using on blackboards It seems that using them on a black surface is much better. The markers do dry very quickly so I use small applications of colour to build up the composition. The plastic transfer sheet are fully re-usable so I will continue to work with them. I send best wishes to you and your family.
Thanks Dan, really enjoyed watching as always - at times like this these wonderful videos are food for the soul. Any particular reason that you put the black gesso on with the tool (not sure what it's called) & not a brush please? Hope you & your viewers are safe.
Thanks, I always used a brush before then I saw this video. It's called a jointing knife but try a wallpaper scraper. ruclips.net/video/_9lrRyr_zW8/видео.html It really works, it does depend on the brand of gesso sometimes a wet sponge is good to achieve a very smooth finish.
I like your work so much. Do you have an idea before you start or is it intuitive? I always wonder what's the process with the focal images you create. Thanks for sharing 💖
I have an idea of the colours and I might think about a figure or a landscape, but I much prefer the work to progress by my own instincts, the hard part is knowing when to stop.
Deze techniek werkt alleen op een gladde ondergrond. Ik ben van plan binnenkort aan een aantal nieuwe demo's te werken die laten zien hoe je interessante texturen kunt maken om op te schilderen met verschillende soorten materialen.
love these ideas and also would love to know what music is playing! It's so restful and stress free! Also what is the paper u r using to transfer? Is it tracing?
Thanks, I spray them with an acrylic varnish when finished as for the archival qualities I'm not too sure about that although I think they will be similar to acrylic or water based paints.
I was asked to test these for a product review and had not used them before. I like them because of the range of techniques you can use them for. if you don't like what you did it is simple to wash off. Fix with a spray of varnish.
Lovely composition! In the first minute and a half you created quite a decent Pierre Soulages! Lol! Great demo, always a pleasure and inspiration. What is the brand of your chalk markers, Dan? I like the colors. Thanks for this demo.
Thank you for sharing your creativity. Could the chalk paint markers be substituted for acrylic markers. I am aware that chalk markers probably dry faster. But I was just wondering.
I would recommend using a spray as the brush would destroy the painting. When dry these chalk markers need fixing with just a light spray of an acrylic varnish.
The silent artist plus the music... all harmonizes uniquely. 🙏👍🏽
This is brilliant Dan. I love your sense of color and just fabulous mark making. Thank you.

Dan, is the blue an acrylic ink or paint and the crayon? Oil pastel? I am confused as I don’t recognize any chalk initially?
No, this was all done using liquid chalk markers,
love these ideas and also would love to know what music is playing! It's so restful and stress free! Also what is the paper u r using to transfer? Is it tracing?
I'm betting he's reusing parts of a plastic bag, since Dan really likes to recycle and reuse waste paper and old crisp wrappers, and things.
Gorgeousness! How permanent/archival would the chalk markers be?
Thanks, I spray them with an acrylic varnish when finished as for the archival qualities I'm not too sure about that although I think they will be similar to acrylic or water based paints.

Yes but you need to spray them with varnish when the work is finished.
Is it tissue paper you are using for the mono print or plastic?
This is just recycled plastic.
Is this doable with just black acrylic instead of gesso?
I don't see why that would not work, you could also try emulsion paint or blackboard paint.
Dan Tirels thank you! I ended up buying some gesso on Amazon
