The thing is all games suffer with the same issue, it's not just WoW. I think when Vanilla WoW first launched it was just the golden days of the early internet when everything was fresh and new and exciting and you could talk with people from all over the world, as time went on people just stopped caring so much about that kind of thing, too many bad experiences have made a lot of us prefer to just game with a few close friends or solo instead of taking chances with randoms. I don't really think there's a way to fix these issues. We just desperately want that nostalgia and it's never coming back.

Games are just a reflection of society as a whole. People don't hardly look at each other in public anymore, much less have friendly conversations. People in general have become far more socially isolated/anti-social the past 5 years or so.. really since covid. This sort of anti-social attitude combined with the 'max efficiency no XP waste' mindset has turned gaming into what it is today.

Speaking from my own experience, I started playing wow during burning crusade when I worked at the post office third shift a friend introduced me to the game and I’ve played ever since with the exception of taking a four year leave after cataclysm when I played I was in a very active guild raiding doing dungeons, etc. now that I’m older, I have two young kids and another one on the way so I really don’t have the time for socializing in a game because I have to be able to put it down at a given notice and to be honest in this day and age there is so much drama when it comes to Guils and various social medias that it’s, the most toxic environment to be in I have invested so much time in my characters. I love the fact that I built them up got all the achievements that I’ve gotten over the length of time that I’ve gotten that I don’t just wanna stop playing and move to single player games because single player games would be more in line with my time requirements, they just lack the depth that I like in wow

As someone who has been playing ever since the release of TBC, I honestly think that the introduction of "accessibility systems" like Dungeon Finder, Group Finder and Raid Finder ruined the social aspect of WoW. Back then, every dungeon or raid that you did was done with other players from your server.
You couldn't form a group without interacting with other players and you had a reputation on your server. People who misbehaved or were toxic were quickly labelled on the server and people avoided playing with them. There's a reason why Name Change became a thing.
With the introduction to all these new systems which makes it way easier to form groups for content, we lose all the interactions we had with each other. Now you can just zoom through the dungeon without even saying a word and if someone is underperforming, they will be replaced instantly with a click of a button.
I miss the old days where your reputation on the server mattered. People were nice to each other, they tried their best and you got to know a lot of people simply by playing the game. The only people I know on my server now are my guildies, the rest are just strangers that I will most likely never interact with.

Chaos Bolt felt like an old school server, Blizzard killed it, Crusader strike feels like a lobby retail game. Deviate delight on era has that community server feel at the moment.

    • @ServeMySoul777

While I do agree with you, the problem with your argument is that we’re not “back in the day” (unfortunately). Most of us are adults who have jobs and families which bring time constraints, and personal commitment.
I do miss the old days when the game was more social. At least in my case, I’m glad they have these systems in place so I can jump in and drop the game in an instant if needed. It beats not being able to play at all.
This is also why I haven’t joined a raiding guild in years. I don’t want people to rely on me when there’s a high chance I cannot make it on time if at all. I also agree the systems in retail are way over the top, and along with abilities, they need to be reigned in a lot.

Some of the old ways of making a group I like but it was not better in all regards. I liked the fact that if you wanted to do a dungeon you had to physically go to that location. Somewhat related to that are post wipe runbacks. That sucks. Running back through a raid having to clear mobs adds nothing to the game and only goes to make raiding more annoying. People who raided and WoW and came to FF14 have all said how much nicer it is just to respawn at the boss. Some people say they loved that you use to have to talk with people to form a group. What I have experienced is that without LFG the interaction never ends up being sociable or enjoyable. Most times the interaction is an interrogation of someone inspecting you, asking for spec, and if you have done it before while they check your logs. There is rarely a personal interaction and it is all business. When you get into the content the interaction is the same as in retail now where you only talk if someone needs a mechanic explained. You are technically required to be social since you have to say something but it does not necessarily encourage positive social interaction.
Ideally for me there would be a board outside of every dungeon. You are still required to meet up at the location but forming a group would be easier. You can either choose to host or put up your character card on the board for recruitment. Your card would show all your character info and let you put any note you want to as well. If the host likes you they could then message you or send you an invite right away. Those who want to queue have an alternative with a little more friction. Those who don't want automatic grouping can still spam chat outside the dungeons or pick from those willing to post onto the board and go with anyone.

I started playing Everquest back in 1999, and my characters are still there. I reactivated in 2024 after going offline in 2008, and it was like coming home. It just...fits me. 🤷‍♂️
WoW, not so much. Played it for 6 months after it first came out, but it just seemed too cartoonish for me to take seriously. The visuals for EQ2 were great, but the lore clashed with EQ1 and I couldn't make it mesh in my mind; EQ1's was MUCH deeper, with puzzles and unanswered questions that persist 25 years after it came out. Gotta love that mystery.

Here is the fix for knowing everything. Have each raid boss on pull take decreased damage, or aura to reduce healing for specific "specs" but randomly, and will have higher odds that "meta" specs are targeted. Basically a 50/50 if you are playing a meta spec you will do 20% less damage or healing. A more feel good version would be 50/50 shot if you are playing off meta you get +20% it would legitimately remove the garbage we have today minmax competing

I ran 21 heroic dungeons yesterday in Cata without one player saying a word. I ran 30 in total but out of 30 / 21 had zero communication even when players were kicked. out of 30 / 7 had players removed and I voted NO on all 7 just because. However, I was outvoted every time, in fact, I'm positive most people did not even know what the person did to get kicked and just voted yes. I'm not sure why I tracked this but I did. The other 9 had very little communication, maybe less than 5-10 words. I have also noticed that in my realm Grubblus US Alliance there are tons of foreign players I think the majority. China, South America, and Germany, so many can't speak English on an English-speaking server. If I got one dollar for how many times I have seen the words (My Friend) in chat I would be rich. the reason servers and realms are separated by area is to allow players to communicate with the same language making it easy to have more communication but that is not the reality of it.

SoD feels different. I started playing three months ago and talk to people every single day, make groups, chat with guildies… It might be just me but so far people have been super nice and helped me out. Yes, finding tanks can take a while but not crazy much. You just have to be smart about when you do what type of content.

I find the same with Hardcore. I think maybe the lower amount of players might account for that. If you wanna do something other than leveling it’s absolutely necessary to interact with other people to form groups, get enchants etc. Sometimes I like that. Sometimes I don’t. Depends on my mood and time constraints.

Been playing hardcore for almost a year now, still insanely social and my favorite way to play wow in a long time. The difficulty forces people to help you kill elite quests, or help enchant your gear or when someone dies everyone knows that person and there are so many stories about each player. As a long form experiment I'd say hardcore nailed exactly what classic/sod/era and retail fail to acomplish as MMO's

I personally would continue playing even if I was the only person logged in the server. That eerie feeling of being completely alone in an mmorpg is quite the atmosphere too. You are in Stormwind and you see something moving in the corner of the screen, you think it might be some other player finally loggin in but nope, it's those cursed children leaving Stormwind for Goldshire. Personally the bigger the worse servers get.
There is a sweetspot just around 10k people per server (active ppl) like most Pservers are at launch. More players means more bad players, worse economy, less ability to farm, worse raids cause players are much less comitted cause theres always some other guild etc, more gdkpa which ruins the game (they dont exist on psrrvers at all)
Also ans most important to this video topic, more players means leas need to interact with others. (U simply just kick and replace ppl as u see fit cause theres so many ppl to choose from)
On Pservers you need to cultivate players, you need to have a good reputation and maintain and good appearance as a guild and individual for the best oportunities since everyone knows everyone more or less.

    • @NicholasBalanta

      What Pserver you played on?
My experience on Pservers is a special community that only does the last raid tier, know only one way of doing things, if you don't know that way (that they won't tell you what they want you to do) in this PuG that you spent an hour or two waiting for them to fill they kick you then go back to spamming chat "LFM overgear the dungeon/raid know fights and show your achieve" and they still wipe for stupid reasons and blame people for being idiots. I got kicked from dungeon groups for not skipping trash that takes the same amount of time to clear as the skip.
The other part of Pserver experience I had was end up in a group and like one other person speaks some english and eventually I got pissed off cause I can't effectively communicate. The worst experience with trying to communicate was "Uh guys anyone speak Russian so I can explain to this guy how he needs to do mechanics?"
At least in retail back when I played and I queued dungeons with a guildmate and we explained "Hey new to this" or "It's an alt" the group was ok and carried us, Pserver people kicked my guildmate for being PVP geared in PVE, so I left was only doing the dungeon for him to get the dungeon quest anyway.
I've met some decent people on Pservers and I met decent people on retail, but the communities on Pservers are largely "special."
Both Pservers I played on start with W and end in mane.

If u look at my YT channel here i have kill vids from each one of them, and if u check my twitch (Slashresto)

    • @Slashresto
      @Slashresto 16 дней назад

@@colenorton3853 Because just like classic fresh servers is always more enjoyable and ppl play for a few months then they jump to the next Pserver fresh launch then they jump between them until the 3rd etc.
If u look at Stormforge for example their servers are far from dead, up until classic cata launch there was 4-5k players on peak daily. (Im unsure since launch since ive not been on since).
Also GDKP is FAR from the most popular dude, the only reasons ppl play them is either A. Make money to sustain their mains or B. Their to shit to even get into raids without having to swipe their mothers credit card
The majority of pugs are just normal pugs and yes GDKP ruins the game and the majority of players would likely agree that it has a negative impact on their classic experience despite not interacting with them.
It ruins the server economy because the more GDKPs the more bots/goldsellers a server gets and the more spam u recive.
It takes away alot of immersion that used to exist in wow for new players who werent around the first time when all u see in capitols is gdkp or gold seller spam.
You can no longer have abit of banter in /2 like was very common back in the day. Sure GDKPs has existed since wotlk retail but nowhere near this prevalent as on classic where 90% of trade chat is filled with spam about em.

Antisocial behavior in wow is when you are on your max lvl rogue, griefing lowbies until they ragequit, because causing that frustration in others gives you a thrill.

People are anti social in MMOs because the world has become more anti social in general for several reasons.
Political polarization affected WoW in a big way, and people are tired of hearing it and dealing with it in game.
That’s just one example, there’s more, but people idealize individuality now and are more selfish in general. Things aren’t done for the experience they’re done to min max and be “the best” and that’s anti-thetical to MMORPG play.

Honestly, I've grown tired of these meta-explaining videos about MMOs. Just play the damn game and talk and interact with other people, and you'll have more fun. That's it. Dont need a 40 hour Madseason video to know that lol 😂
People just don't realize that it is us who have changed, that's why MMOs are different now. The world we live in has changed. Everything in life is accelerated.

I don't like the infinite content machine either. However, there's value to telling the story of the cultural milestone that has been MMORPGs

The advent and pervasiveness of social media is why MMO's are now antisocial. Back in my day of Everquest (1999), being online and chatting with people in the game world was a unique and immersive experience. Community mattered and by nature was niche - as being online and gaming was not mainstream. It used to be faux pas to be a "gamer", almost shameful back then as people didn't know or understand it. Now it means nothing as everyone is a "gamer".

Madseason feels very "these darn kids!" as of late. Very old man yelling at clouds.
People have better things to do.
Some people even have their own children.
Are they "dopamine fueled and impatient" for prioritizing spending time with their children over having to stand around Ironforge for 2 hours and /yell "LFG UBRS HAS KEY" before even getting a group?
Even if you just want to play games, there's hundreds of "better" games being released every year.
I COULD corpse run back to molten core for 40min in total during raid night because Bob can't figure out how Living Bomb works, OR I could play Elden Ring, or socialize with my friends in games that don't waste my time.
We all like playing WoW, non of us like automated match making, but Blizzard don't give us enough tools to find people to play with outside of automated systems, so people use external tools to quickly evaluate people to make their own groups, and that homemade jerry-rigged solution turns toxic when it's the only option.

Well it's important to take into account that Madseason is almost Vanilla-Exclusive in his preference. It's his favourite version of the game and his fond memories of it are coloured by that.

Alpha and betas make the game better for the people who experience it in the Fall. Why do you think WoW is king?

I don't believe it was ever banned. Correct me if I am wrong but I thought they failed to renew their service contract so it was temporarily suspended.
However, now it is renewed and it should be available for them again sometime this summer.
