I used to do data containment for a couple of years. There is air conditioning that comes below the floor through the tile and its periphery to blow up onto the server racks, the floor tiles set 3 feet above the concrete ground so that vents can be blown underneath them and then containment walls are built above the servers to vent the hot air out

Hmm, 9 years ago fandom was just starting? Maybe for WoW. I've played since 08 (TBC), so 16 years now. That Dad from South Park's reaction was mine at the Thanksgiving table when my adult kids and grandkids were talking and it was a foreign language. My son bought it for me. I got lost outside the start zone and level bunnies were killing me so I called my daughter to get on and help me. She was busy so my then-10 year old grandson logged onto the game on his character and walked me back to the starting zone.
But I've been in fandom longer than most of you have been alive, and I mean active fandom. Started with Dark Shadows (1966-1971) and the original Star Trek (66-68). I read SF/Fantasy when I could get my hands on it. Lord of the Rings was read in 1970, only a few friends even knew what that was. I read comics when I could borrow them from friends (parents didn't think they were good, just trash). Started writing fan fiction when I was in junior high, into college and beyond (66-pretty much this year). I was one of the nerd squad in high school (50th reunion is next year). . By 1978, I was hanging out in a comic shop with a guy that would be like a big brother to me, and another customer became our big sister. By 1979, I was doing SF/F conventions as staff or dealer. Met a ton of people, famous people. We opened a comic shop in 1981 and it was open until 1986 when most everyone moved away. Met my soulmate husband at a convention in 1993 (there's a story for you...) and we married within 6 months of that meeting. Starting in 2013, I became an author guest at conventions. I have a couple of panels at a convention coming up. Raised my kids in fandom, now the grandkids are into it. My younger son is into anime, his kids are into it. He and a daughter learned Japanese so they could watch originals and she's going to work in Japan as a teacher as soon as college is over.
One time only. Or hard to get. Took me YEARS to get Ashes of A'lar, every week on every character for years. I was so happy, I was turning donuts in the front room with the wheelchair, screaming. My husband thought I lost my mind and my Shelties just barked. Yesterday, someone got it out of a box in a raid. Congrats but damn it, working for it meant a lot and now.....
Server room is COLD. Hubby works for a financial institution with server farms and he's IT. We've seen this.
So yeah, Fandom, I'm there. And my fondest wish is to make a BlizzCon before I pass away. Me, the wheelchair, and the husband who looks like Santa, hopefully we'll be there. LOVED the documentary.

That's how big the world of warcraft is. You can spend your whole life in it and not see everything. I couldn't care any less about pvp. There's a whole world of stories about pvp: fights for rank 1, underdog and hero stories, famous griefers, famous world pvp battles, tournament drama, balance drama, pvp development trivia, and more than I just don't care about and don't care to know about.
Knowing any one bit of wow trivia doesn't make or break how much of a fan you are. The world of warcraft is just too big to know it all.

and for WoD they had to scrape a story together... literally just took old nostalgic characters and old lore without creating anything new.
Pointless timetravel which ultimately had no impact for azeroth, it was like TBC except we got nothing new in return. No new races, no new classes and no new lore characters.
TBC atleast brought new races and their leaders into azeroth + it wasnt timetravel so it actually made an impact in the real timeline.

I agree that WoD was disappointing to say the least. No impact on Azeroth? Just keep in mind that’s how we got alternate Gul’dan to our timeline to kickoff the Legion expansion. That’s how I rationalize sins of WoD 😂

To the LotR point, a lot of Tolkien lore was borrowed for Azeroth. It makes sense for us to be drawn to a game that is borrowing elements from a movie franchise we love. Ironforge is literally the misty mountains. Two different elven races, dwarves, orcs, etc all tolkien ideas. Blizzard pulled from LotR, DnD and Warhammer. Best elements of each to draw in geek culture.

When I first played the game, my son had me roll a hunter, a good starter class. 15yrs later, the hunter is my base fave class to play. It's been on A/H the one I raid with. I play all others, save DH/DK/shamans, but hunters are always there. The memorable was killing Arthas. The guild I was in kept trying and trying and finally, 1 night when I was in class, they downed him then realm transferred out. A friend of mine knew some epic players, got 5 or 6 together ... not even a 10m, we went in on heroic and mainly being carried, we got to Arthas. I started crying at that point when you know he' down, and when the others were whooping (again... they'd downed him by then countless times), I had to mute 'cuz it was like 5-7m of trying for that bastard. It was great!!!
I remember taking my son to a midnight expac release (2nd or 3rd one cuz I started just short of LK)... watching the line grow was pretty cool. It was winter .. in Santa Cruz California and cold as heck. We had hot chocolate, & he'd stand in line, then come get warm for a few mts in the car, then get back in line (his friends would hold his spot). He finally got me into it since I started hanging over his shoulder during Black Temple raids .. and now playing, I can understand the annoyance when someone is watching. I loved the look of the game, its graphics. lol And when Cata came out, I spent the night before release flying about the world, folders of screenshots and cried, knowing it would be different. Even met Deathwing in Ashenvale... how does something so big sneak up on you!? lol Moment #2.
There' more, intermingled with times I just stopped playing because I started getting bored with Wow. Now, in 5/24 the idea of 5 different WoW' may lead to another stop in playing... too many splits.

The part where you saying classes had way more class identity before, really resonated. Right at the part where the girl was saying how she rolled a druid but it really didnt fit her and then she rolled a pally, and was like, yes this is it! I had that same experience when I started the game. My first character was a troll rogue. Troll just seemed the coolest looking and rogue sounded cool. I basically leveled just high enough until I was able to create a Death Knight.....and I fell in LOVE!!! INSTANTLY hooked. Dropped my rogue immediately cuz I WAS a DK. Had so much fun with her. I no longer play her, as I switched to hunter for WoD. But I also had that feeling when I started playing hunter, it just felt right. But bottom line, when you find that class that just resonates with you, it feels so good.

@@mtr7076 Keep LFR. Sure, let them enjoy it. But that doesn't mean Blizzard couldn't create extra content for those who put effort and time into it. That whole mentality of "everyone must get everything" is nonsense and it breeds laied back lazy people that reaches out their hand and gets everything served on a silver platter.
That was the best thing about Naxx40 back then. It meant something, cause it wasn't just easily available to everyone. Beyond those portals only the strongest ventured. The heroes! They saw the dark corridors of the floating castle and found iconic items never seen before.
Today, everyone gets everything - or a version of it at least. It's just not the same. And today Blizzard pumps out more content than ever before with amazing tools making it very much possible to create extra content that caters to the true gamers out there.

They were so hardcore into it that they forsook taking care of their bodies (one guy smelt so bad it could probably make a Bigfoot run away while throwing up) and even skipping classes just to play the game. Other people in this group were talking about the game as if they were speaking gibberish. It was so fucking weird but interesting.

if you, as a developer, go for something that YOU would like to play, chance is high its gonna be a lot better product than if you try to make something your "players" would like to play, because as a developer, you know what you would like to play, but the players? on the information on the internet? They dont know themselves what they wanna play, most of them dont have the knowledge about videogames to know, let alone articulate it in a way thats useful information to you to build a game of. Blizzard just doesnt have people in charge anymore that are interested in good videogames, only people that are interested in maximizing profit, thats the problem, and has been for the past 17 years.

The whole sentiment of *build an environment for yourself and likeminded people will join you* really has died on an industry level.
I've been doing it with guilds in wow for years.. make a super toxic dark humor home for myself.. and guess what, people like myself join and enjoy it too.
