So, having unglued the barrel and given everything a forensic clean. I reassembled, carefully sorted washed and lightly lubed some pellets. These are the results over a 64 shot string (4 magazines):-
    909.2 FPS average.
    10fps. Extreme spread.
I didn’t calculate a standard deviation but I did do another 15 shot string as it seemed to be getting better and better as I shot.
    909.2 FPS average.
    3 FPS extreme spread!
    1.2 standard deviation!
I’ve never achieved those kind of figures with any sub 12ftlb rifle, ever!
This appears to be quite a ‘soft’ tune as well, around 120 bar on the reg, hst at 17.35 mm. It’s still 46.6 foot pound energy at the muzzle.
Do keep up these great vids Meathead Marksman, I wouldn’t have achieved this without them. Thank you again!
I’m waiting on range access now for accuracy testing.

Very nice mate! Yeah my method is on the conservative side, you'll probably find you can get more power and still be reasonably consistant with a few more turns of the hammer spring, I just think that staying back from the cliff edge a little bit is good for shot count/ consistency

Quick update on a ‘air economy’ retune. Got on a range last week and zeroed at 55 yards (50 metres). Gun was running at 845fps 53 FPE with Super King Mk11 33.95gn. Grouping was all over the place so turned the HST adjuster 1 click to ‘5’ on the dial. That gave me 820fps and a five shot, 12mm edge to edge group. So through this barrel, the heavies respond to slower (I’ve read, or watched that somewhere but can’t find it). Had a pretty poor shot count (around 64 shots) so concluded that it didn’t need 135bar at the regulator.
Just followed Meatheads process from start to finish again and these are my new settings:- Regulator set to 115bar (ish....damn these gauges), HST gap 18mm on MAX, but.....turned to ’A’ on the dial to give 815 FPS for 50 FPE- Extreme spread 5 FPS.
More range time on Wednesday where I’m hoping the grouping stays the same, damn, wish there was a way to show you this 5 shot group!!!!

If you want to try a really good medium for catching pellets, I have been using a material called Duct Seal. Pellet traps for a while have been using it and it is cheaply bought a hardware store like Lowe’s or Home Depot her in the USA. It costs about $3.25 for a 1 pound brick. Use as many as you want, I’m using 9 lbs in total. Also a great material for seeing how well your pellets expand. My trap is 2” thick and has stopped everything I have shot at it at about 3/4”-1” deep @ 900-940 FPS w/ 16 grain pellets. Hope this improves your indoor pellet trap. Found out about this material from air gun forums and really glad I did. Awesome stuff. Great video. Thank you.

Your video has helped me more than anything I have found so far. Excellent explanation, you are a great teacher. I never touched my factory setting for the two years I have owned my impact. It was chrono’n at 942 FPS with a SD of 3 and a spread of 8. (25 cal 700mm 25 gr) on Max power. I recently bought and installed a power plenum, huma gauges and the dual flow transfer port. I have the reg pressure at dead nuts 110. I am getting 967 FPS, 21 spread and an SD of 5. I think the spread is miss leading as it was the first two shots that created it, if you leave those out then it goes to 11 with an SD of 4. I will try adjusting the hammer and valve next and graph like you did to see my flats next. I would have had no clue how to do this without your help!

    • @jeremyorr247
      @jeremyorr247 3 года назад

A couple of questions: when I start shooting I notice that the first shot and sometimes the second are lower velocity then by the third shot it gets consistent, is this typical? Is it sort or like cold bore shot in center fire and I should delete? Also I ran some mkii 34 gr for a 15 round string at the same settings, velocity dropped to an avg of 833 fps, extreme spread of 12 and an SD of 3. These numbers seem ok to me or is this really too low a velocity for the 34s? I only have access to my 10 yard range at home right now so no significant distance to check accuracy but at 10 they were all in the same hole.

Uncle Hodge, excellent information Sir. I received my MK2 this week, and like you, the old FX Impact manual was issued with the new MK2. Hmm. FX if you are reading... "details gentlemen, details". Anyway, there is zip for air gun shooters here in my area in the Common Wealth of Virginia (USA), and as such, there is no information exchange. So far I'm relying on you, Ernest R., and Matt D. . While Matt D. remains an FX Impact icon, and his generalized explanations are very good, your explanations and demonstrations are were the rubber meet the road. And I love your sense of humor too. I am also a Ernest fan... another "let me show you how to do this" guy. Anyway, a shout out to you for taking the time and effort to show your tuning process. It just happens to be I selected the .25 cal, and ordered the same pellets as you did... so this gives me the "about settings" I will probably end up with too... which is another expectation I had from FX... FX, if your reading... how about giving ball park settings for Pressure Reg/Hammer Spring/FPS for several the common pellets and slugs. Uncle Hodge did :) A suggestion for a future video: Same thing, but with your slug liner and selected slug. Once again, Good work Sir!

Following your recipe, I think I did pretty good for a first time PCP guy. My set up is near yours with a MK2 and 25 Caliber (using the exact same pellet i.e. JSB King Heavy MK2 @ 33.95 gr.), however I do have the Donny Fl moderator, and I'm using a SWFA 3X15X42 first focal scope. In my adventure it took approximately 135 shots into the bag to speed tune it and get the following final settings:
      • Final Valve Stop was at .40 inches
      • Mean speed was an 916.23 FPS the last ten shots
      • The Standard Deviation was 2.16 fps
      • The Extremes were 6.10 spread (low = 913.9 and high = 919)
BTW I heard you say something about clay or sand dust... try some rubber mulch. At least rubber mulch around the sand. :)
The regulator pressure was set at 138-ish (right side of needle on the 140 gauge mark).
It took 6 shots to get the scope near zero, where I started shooting groups.
      5-Shot Groups at 30 Yards. 91 F°/56% Humidity, Winds swirling at 10 MPH - Aug. 4, 2019.
      Group 1 0.280” (7.112 mm)
      Group 2 0.200” ( 5.080 mm)
      Group 3 0.200” (5.080 mm)
I was going to reset the turrets, but I think I will wait on the slug barrel (still on back-order). I do plan on shooting with slugs 99% of the time.
Anyway... pretty easy to follow your MO. I would like to hear your thoughts on Part B, tuning for groups... I will assume once you get the speed about right, then I would think you trade the chronograph for group sizes, and each adjustment is micro-moved at this point. But right now, I'm sort of happy, so I'm not going to fiddle with it anymore until the slug liner gets here.
Again Uncle Hodge, thank you - I felt better doing this with a solid method, and data.
      Joe

@@josephmcguigan8273 good stuff! Group tuning basically follows the same method, if it's not grouping well then you just tune it up 5 to 10 fps- or down 5 to 10fps to have the pellet/slug exit the barrel in slightly shorter or longer amounts of time in order to leave the end of the barrel at the perfect node within it's vibration wave. I rekon yours will group just fin if it's shooting like that at 30m, stretch it out to 50, 75 and 100 on a calm day and see how it goes before changing anything. Make sure you weigh and sort your pellets to eliminate variables aswell. Good job on the tune and Wright up. Cheers mate

@@meatheadmarksman2013 Thanks Hodge. I have word from FX about the manual and the pressures. I will quote: "We recommend the maximum pressure on the regulator to 165-170 bars on the MK2, they will take 180-210 but they will not be as precise at such a high pressure.
Regarding the Manual, there will be a Mk2 Version out on our website within the next 2 weeks."

Again, thank you. I did not understand everything you said, but I certainly absorbed enough to get myself into serious trouble (a condition with which I am well aquainted). For instance, the day after I purchased my Impact, I had to phone the dealer. I explained to him that the factory manual failed to list the recommended fill pressure for the bottle and the bottle itself was marked "315 bar max". What is the answer? He looked through whatever he had for info and told me "250 bar." At some later point I happened to pick up the rifle while wearing my reading glasses ( 20/20 at a distance thanks to cataract surgery, but blind as a bat up close) and there on the side of the rifle, directly above the bottle gauge is marked "MAX PRESSURE 250 BAR". As a friend once described my skill set, I may not be good but I'm slow.
    Keep up the great work.
    Luv and kisses, Carfunkle

Thank you Meathead for the info, you done a perfect job of showing how to perfectly tune an Impact AG. ( :
I did my .30 cal 700 mm barrel like this.
It did come from factory set at 140 bar and 850 FPS with 50 grain JSB's,
I wanted to be closer 890 FPS with 50 grain pellets and about 910 FPS with 44 grain pellets, so below is what I did.
Link to PDF showing my shot strings and 100 yard groups.
    williamnapier.com/dl/airgun/fxshotstrings.pdf
    1. Moved Reg to 150 bar. Which is MAX on the Impact X Also most documentation suggest 150 bar for the .30 cal.
    2. Set Hammer Spring adjuster at MAX and fine adjusted allen screw as Meathead showed. " ruclips.net/video/K5vcg9IFbKs/видео.html"
    3. Valve Stop ((the knob in front at where the bottle screws on)) at MAX or approx the 4th line on the knob.
    4. Check FPS over Chronograph,
    5. FPS was 940 using JSB 44 grain and 890+ using 50 grain JSB, a little to high and groups were not as good.
    6. Now I adjusted the Valve stop Limiter/travel knob or what ever you want to call it back until the FPS started going down to around 910 FPS for 44 grain JSB and 885 for 50 grain JSB.
NOTE: I measured and kept notes on all settings and every shot was shot over the Chronograph even when shooting to see my group sizes.
After ending the tune and shooting several hundred pellets I am at the perfect settings for FPS and Group size.
I shot groups from 20 yards out to 100 yards with the 50 grain JSB's shooting at the 885 FPS. All shots out to 80 yards were under 1/2" 90 to 100 yards were .90" Center to Center.

My Impact did as you said at 44:10 to 44:25 climbed down and up and this was only after 3 tins of pellets shot through it. Turns out the **** C3 ORing **** bushing on the hammer slide was crushed and torn. Talked to Ernest Rowe @ FX Airguns US and he told me to replace it with a new one that they are making out of Delrin (hard Plastic) instead of using rubber Oring. I did change it myself and the old one was in 2 or 3 pieces. It would cause the hammer to not always open the valve the same every time. This is an ongoing problem in the Impacts. I think they may be using a better material now in the new Impacts or using the Delrin flat one the I installed, so far all is good now. The parts manual is here: fxairguns.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/08/impact-190823.pdf Look at Section C #3 part is the oring that causes the problem.

I'll keep that in mind, I actually had to send the gun back cos a seal or something in the back end failed and air was blasting out the back lol it did shot very well for a while after tuning though so I might not have had the same problem. Also my bottle pressure gauge was reading like 30bar too high which was giving me all sorts of confusing chrony results until I figured it out

I really enjoy watching this video. I've watched this several times as I can't digest all the information in one go.
A question I have though is when I adjust my hammer spring preload with the little allen key, I don't seem to have a inconsistent shot string, it just seems to get lower and lower (the FPS). Is it ok to have the preload completely maxed (screwed) all the way in?

    • @meatheadmarksman2013
      @meatheadmarksman2013  4 года назад +2

If it's consistent when it's maxed out then that's fine. What setting is your valve adjuster on? (The little one above the air tank and below the barrel) that should be wide open before you start tuning and when you find a good spot you wind it in until speed drops off

    • @duopkik

My question is now that I realize the tune process is a balancing act between reg pressure and hammer spring compression, with valve adjustments being the last item, where is the starting point with the hammer spring adjustments?

    • @meatheadmarksman2013
      @meatheadmarksman2013  3 года назад

The starting point is tunded from the factory for jsb pellets, king 25. So if you are tuning fir a heavier pellet or slug you'll need more reg pressure and more hammer spring, if you are tuning for something lighter then that it will be less

I've been at this for a couple of days, had to wait to get a new chrony in because what you say about the valve adjuster is correct. The moment you've got something consistent and you touch that valve adjuster up front the whole thing falls apart. Baffeling, thought it was the cheapskate chrony I had, but the new one confirms what the old one indicated. We must be missing something.
Correct me if I'm wrong but the valve adjuster is the thing that helps to conserve air, so the whole turbulent air note in the beginning of the vidjego is out of the window when you turn it wide open, is it not? So tomorrow I'm going to redo it all and leave the valve wide open...
Another thing that might differ, I have the MK2 with the power plenum from the factory so I have my reg on 120 and shooting ~880-900 footsies with wheel on max and 33.95gr
    .25

    • @meatheadmarksman2013
      @meatheadmarksman2013  4 года назад +1

Turned out that my bottle gauge was reading about 25bar higher then what the pressure actually was. Highly recommend pumping up your gun to 250 bar and then tuning down to 175ish and fill again so you dont get too close to your reg pressure. I was actually "off the reg" when i did that, since replacing that bottle gauge (free under warranty) the valve adjuster has only made things better. Its a very useful part of the gun for tuning. You could also try swapping your reg pressure gauge with your bottle gauge and record what the pressyre difference is, just make sure you fill the bottle both tines and compare it to the filler gauge so its the same

@ 920 seems fine, it's a good spot to aim for. Usually from the factory they come at 910 to 930ish, I wouldn't go any faster then 930 just to avoid stability issues bit 910 to 930 is pretty quick and doesn't use much air per shot

Hello MeatheadMarksmen from England (Where it’s a bit shit!)
    Brilliant thank you!
I just followed your method to the letter on my just purchased, 8 month old .25 Impact (700 mm barrel), and I’ve got 910fps with 25.4gn FX pellets, with an extreme spread of 10fps (I did see 5fps but can’t find it again). That valve restrictor is veeeeerrrrrrry sensitive, eh?
For the interest of your good self and others, there’s a recently discovered little story to share.........so I’ll begin.
Once upon a time, far far away in a place called England, where people fuck things up, hide the fuck up, then pass the problem to someone else, usually in return for money. A man bought an eight month old FX Impact 700mm ‘sniper’, cos it’s what he wanted sooooo badly.
The man got his new rifle home and set off on his voyage of discovery. Impatient to remove the barrel and make sure it was spotlessly clean, he set about the task.
TWO days later, it was mission accomplished!!! Two days of puzzlement, confusion, sweating and swearing.
You see, what the man didn’t know, was that some twat, before the man owned the gun, had loctited the shroud to its fittings at BOTH ends!!!!!
The man started believing that he now owned a version of the Impact that DIDN’T have the option of changing barrel liners. Until, with the shroud finally removed, the man could see, through the barrel end fitting, a tantalising glimpse of the flat sided barrel liner retaining thingy!
Alas though, all was to no avail as the barrel liner retaining thingy is also glued, very very glued, in place!!!!!
Resigned to never being able to try a slug liner, the man thoroughly cleaned everything, reassembled it all being meticulously careful, and set about getting the rifle set up for maximum efficiency. And here are the mans settings:-
    REG pressure 120bar (ish)
    HST gap 17.35mm
VALVE restrictor - just touching the fourth mark.
All the best Aussie compatriot and thank you for the excellent tuning video. I’d have fucked this royally without you, then hidden it, passed it on to someone else, and yes.....in return for money!

What a gigantic pita! Couldn't fathom why someone would locktite up and seal off all the parts of the gun that actually make it worth buying lol that suuuucks! If you get brave and wanna pull it apart a penetrating lube like wd40 and heat from something like a hair dryer or a very gentle heat gun might help get that stuff loose enough to remove. You'd wanna have a tap an die set on hand to clean out all the threads and bolts too. But hey is it's shooting >10fps extreme spreads and doing what you want it too then maybe leaving it alone is a good idea

That's a good question, first off always always always do what it says to do in your user manual, that way you won't void your warranty. But it's my understanding that you can drop it something like a quarter turn, fire a shot, drop it another quarter turn, fire a shot etc etc. Even though I have a mkii It doesn't say that in my user manual... so if I have to drop my reg I'll be depressureing as per the instructions in the manual
