I think all of those "challenges" have been done before and have been done to death.
You could go to Amazon and try to find the most ridiculous toy camera but I feel like DRTV has covered that enough a few years ago with their own series about giving pros really cheap and nasty cameras.
What I liked about this video was that it covered your skill as a photographer but it was also a review of this Leica gear.
Since you are all about shooting RAW, how about comparing different RAW converters for Mac and PC? Editing the same photo with different software to get to the same result might be a little bit of a challege :)
4X5 Speed Graphic. It's from the old days. We shot sports and people. But I still love the Leica M3 . Tri X film . ASA 400. You got the "Challenge". I am sure you can do it.
How about taken pictures without asking permission in a public street or park without getting caught?

This video is the perfect representation of every photographer out there strugling to find the right frame and at the same time not look like a creepy stalker. Awsome work.
"Autofocusing is hard when you don`t have autofocus", That is a statement I can agree with.
They don't want a picture taken, but they don't realize they are on video. lol

It's easy explained, they don't want their photo taken on principle. However, cash can always water down such strong beliefs.
They probably assume the video will be edited.

I think its funny how peoples first concern when asked "can I take a picture of you?" Is whether or not you are making money off the shot and if so they want to get paid too. Just a lil funny to me

I think it's even funnier that they always debate if it's illegal or not without asking themselves If they want it or not. Most people say "it's illegal, so I don't want it" which is an oxymoron of course :D
Max Wolter they might as well just black mirror the whole thing so when you point a cam to them it blurs their face/tattoos automatically, obviously you'd have to pay for public privacy.

You should’ve put the restraint on yourself to not take a photo of the same thing twice. I understand it’s difficult but 12 photos of the same diner shouldn’t count.
Agreed and despite this being an interesting experiment I was left disappointed with the composition in general. I thought Jared was much more skilled than this tbh.
With such an uncomfortable tool to do your job you get nervous and a little anxious- specially if you know it makes you look like a creep-
@@amarn9624 I can only disagree. Jared is no street photographer mainly. Me as an portrait photographer are also very overwhelmed if im try to shoot street. And then there is this completely different camera.
A good tip would be to not to wear a bright red shirt that has bold lettering of "i shoot .." on it when photographing on the street. But I know you've been doing that for a long time.

People are scared of one another. They look at each other as strangers, not fellow humans . Fear is winning , common sense is loosing. This video shows how tricky is to do street photography nowdays.

I would have to say its much more difficult to photograph people in the United States and maybe some European countries, many people are more reserved and paranoid of having their photo taken. With that said it also depends on how you approach them and the connection you make, it can be useful to first approach them without a camera in your hand and make a connection first then take the camera out and ask them. In some countries around the world it's much easier to make that human connection and ask if you can take their photo, you would be surprised how many will say yes.

This was actually really interesting to watch. Your approach to finding photos, interacting with people, the whole "live" footage, I've enjoyed the whole video and definitely want to see more of those.
Indeed. This was one of the best photography videos I ever watched in RUclips. I have very little experience shooting pictures and this video showed me a lot of interesting approaches to use while I am on the streets. I'd like to see more videos like this, unedited and with your complete thought process.

Yes, great video. Did remind me a bit of my own first time of using a Leica. When I was young and still had hair and such. Yes that 18mm at f16 would be fun, or a 50mm dream lens at f0.95. I do like that 18mm a lot though.

Love your videos. As a Leica shooter this one is pretty amusing. "It takes that long to focus".... only because you are just learning to use it. After a while it becomes second nature. Also, the zone focusing is your friend and will speed up the process.
LOL! I shoot Leica M’s and the SL. The trick to vertical shots on the M I use is focus horizontal first then flip the camera vertical (essentially focus and recompose). I think you did pretty good for not being used to a rangefinder and using the M-D. The 50mm Summilux ASPH (the lens you are using) is one of the best Leica lenses ever. Nice Job!
Also, I have never shot a bike with my Leicas!

I just don't understand why you're 3 miles away from everything with a 50mm lens. That's not street photography. You don't even have to ask people anything, you're in a public place, pre-focus, go up to them and take your photo. If they wanna call the cops, so be it. The most that will happen to you, is that you'll "have to" delete the photo.
Because this is what I chose to do.
In Australia at least Police, can't force you to delete your photographs or confiscate your camera or SD card.
I basically never ask for permission for candids/portraits......easier to ask for forgiveness after than permission before.
Makes sense, though I think Fro was going out of his way to demonstrate 'best practice'. Really interesting to see the different responses.

I made the transition from SLR to rangefinder, so I know how awkward those first photos feel.
Having made a few thousand photos on a similar camera, though, the compactness and simplicity of the manual rangefinder now makes it hard to go back to the “full-featured” cameras.
They’re just very different tools that require quite different styles.
Thanks again for showing us that hardest and most awkward phase of transition.
Next challenge, medium format film! I’m thinking a TLR...yashica-mat 124g perhaps? go to a better location though...

Sir i have one of bigginer nikon dx body and i only had a kit lens of 18-55mm..i want to spend near about 350 us dollars for a lens which should have fast focusing and sharp ...with decent focal length for traveling which one should be your recomendation?

What if you shot with the Leica for six months and then evaluated it? What this exercise proves it that it is, at least initially, difficult to focus a rangefinder, even for an experienced photographer. This is not a surprising result. The challenge doesn't tell us anything about whether the Leica contributes anything aesthetically to your photography. Try going out with a Nikon with gaffer tape over the LCD and shooting 24 shots in 24 minutes on the street -- do those Nikon images look better or different from the Leica shots? Still, the video was a fun experiment.
Personally I think it’s easier to manual focus with a rangefinder. Lining up the patches is easier than split prism I think. I think it’s most comparable to focus peaking in the sony’s
rangefinder focus is easy. you just have to align the patch in the middle and you're set
These photos are more on the basic snapshot side than the professional side in my opinion...
But Jared actually thought about his composition when taking most of them, so they cannot be snapshots.

Don't rangefinder cameras have a split-focus screen? when I shot film it seemed relatively easy to get focus with it.

I did exactly the same thing when I started with a Leica M8 rangefinder. Focus problem. Can't quite control it. You have a Summicron F2.0 lens and you want to take pictures with F2.0.
It is indeed better to start with F8 or 5.6 on a 28/35 lens and use zone focusing. With this camera you don't have a screen, but you do have a lens with the indicators on it.

Excellent! Perfect! The "boring parts" of the video are JP wandering around feeling awkward, lost, small talking, frustrated not finding shots.... And it's also so refreshing and encouraging for a n00b like me, so good seeing a photographer like this muddle through, and that it's not non-stop portfolio shots. Makes me feel like I could do that, which i suppose is the point.

I'd like to challenge you to do a video on shooting reflections and reflective surfaces, incorporating them into useful shots , ie. someone's reflection in a pair of sunglasses or standing by an illuminated window
what wireleas lav mic are you using?
I used to shoot with similar manual cameras. I rarely used the viewfinder to focus. what did was look at the distance marker on the lens and set it. You quickly learn how far 6, 10 and 15ft are, after that it's pretty much infinity on a standard lens. Closing down to F4 helps too.
I'd walk around and shoot from the hip. Maybe try that as an assignment? linked your video, thanks Fro

I have a Sigma 30mm f1.4 and I everytime I go out to take some pictures it's a challenge to find stuff that looks right at 30mm. I mean 35mm and 50mm are standard but when I shoot at 30mm it becomes a bit weird. So a 30mm challenge might be interesting to see.

Hello Jared, I follow you from France since few weeks and you made a great job, so interesting. I love it. I am a street shooter and sometimes I use my film Leica rangefinder. It's a different way to take pictures. I noticed that you didn't use the good eye, you must use your right eye and not the left one like with DSLR. Your nose will be like a support of the side of the camera and you will be able to use your left eye to see what happen and what can come in your wiewfinder. Yes, you understand that you must shoot with both eyes wide open. And for the focus, to get a quick image in focus, you must always pre-focus your camera using the scale on the lens at 3 meters, that is the best distance to take street pictures of people. You must also pre-determine a shutter speed and aperture with of course the ISO for the ambient light and and then you have to look at people and move at the good distance (3m) to take the shot without using the manual focus. You focus only if you have time and at F2.0 or 2.8.

lol, my good eye is my left eye. I can't shoot with my right eye.
Exactly like me but with a 10 000 dollars gear, you must change your eye haha after 2 or 3 photoshoots you will get the use, believe me. This is the only way to shoot with a Leica camera, the same with my Fujifilm X100F.
Thanks for the great video. Reminds me of when I brought my 262 Leica. I thought "what have I done..." After lots of practice I am now quite fond of the Leica and can work it well. It's so like shooting film. A very different type of photography compared to a DSLR's. The images are staggering when i get it right!
Great idea and realization- I love the real-time aspect of it.
I know that if you already trained how to use this camera before… there will be no challenge, but I wish you recognize how much fun it can be to use this kind of camera when you know what you are doing. :)
And for street photography aspect, I think most important is to make it fast, when you are pointing at someone for 20 seconds and take 2-4 photos you can make everybody nervous. It’s like steering at someone. The key aspect, in my opinion, is to make it instant- previsualize framing, learn distance, prefocus and take frame in 0,5-2s max.
Btw Jared , pics look great , good video , but one question. What the hell is a Leica md kit? It looks like it's a film Leica but the pics are digital ? Might be a stupid question but had to ask.

He’s a slave of autofocus haha. What would happen if he had to shoot with, let’s say, a7 with manual f. Zuiko? This vid is annoying in some way
for not being highly editted for the challenge period I thought it was pretty "true"... autofocus definitely affects your mentality when you shoot if you let it.
This was excellent....not because of the challenge....because of the approach and handling rejection, something so many of us struggle with.
thanks for noticing. I realized while doing it once I got the no, I was out and onto the next one.
I think the fact it was unedited helped - so many people do RUclips videos on how to approach strangers for portraits on the street and because it's cut together it' like one no then 100 'no problems' - this was much more insightful as you also had to give of yourself and listen to the stories of your potential subjects to make that connection.
Would be good to see more.
Maybe a challenge where you and a buddy go out and see who can get the highest % of yes's in a set time period would be good.

I really enjoyed following you on this challenge. I can relate to walking around looking for shots like this.
Wonderful demonstration of where we've come with photography where technical skill is practically unnecessary and virtually forgotten. Not judging, just a statement. OK, Judging a little :-) Everyone over 45 is like "WTH Fro? Focusing is not that damn difficult!". Try scale focusing and using hyperfocal distance some time, or maybe focusing on a ground glass for real fun.
Hey Jared? Why aren't you using rule of thirds, choosing to center most of your shots? Also, you're tilting really high for some. Just wondering what your thought process is on that. Thanks mate.

I shoot on the streets in the U.K. daily. And have done for nearly a year. Not one single person has asked me what I’m doing or not to take photos of them. I must be lucky lmao. They seem pretty uptight over in philly haha.

This is a great video because it shows how dependent we are of technology making it easier for us. Have ppl forgotten how we would work with film. There was no preview of what you shot.

Kind of like Egyptian art. The most significant side of everything. No abstraction no nothing. I guess range finder works like you kind of know how far the stuff is and with aperture you make object in the field of sharpness. So for that reason I dont really get why rangefinder needs 1.4 lens.
What is the Lightroom workflow to process those photos of cafe? They look really nice.

Just got a Leica m240 and 50mm summilux and it’s not that hard to focus as the video describes.
This is superfun for me to watch. Beouse I use a voightländer Bessa L film camera. With a jupiter 8 lens(f2.0/50mm). I understand your struggle but when you get that perfect photo nothing beats that.

I liked this challenge, because street photography ( well park) is all about the inter action with people, either verbal or just that they don't notice, it is not about being sneaky. It is so more difficult with a film crew.
I want a B I G articulating screen without being bulky and heavy love the pads screen a case for bigger but not heavier a bigger back of camera screen case for??!!!

Having shot a leica for a few years now it's funny to see your process using the camera. Don't forget to have fun. It gets easier. Try all manual and film for hard mode.
I was thinking the same - I've only recently got a DSLR after shooting manual film cameras for years. Watching him struggle with the focus etc. kind of shocked me at first but if you're used to modern autofocus I suppose I'll give him a pass.

I would like to see you take photos with a 1959-60s film camera ,and see what you get ,as these too have no autofocus, the iso depend on the film used ,and you are restricted to the number of photos on the film roll. and you cannot see the results until they are developed .

You know back when people were trying to make cheap digital cameras, you had the keychain digital camera or this digital camera or that digital camera that were around 40 bucks and had no screen either. They also had no way to tell if you got the picture or not. I think it's the digital age and certain things need to be parted from. Give me a screen any day with information. I used to shoot film and that was the one thing I hated about film is that you never knew how it came out until you got it home or got it developed
I was taught on the Leica M3 . It is a film camera. The range finder was easy. How about you use a 4X5 speed graphic. Slide film. Rollie 2 1/4 x 2 1/4 . Maybe with a Rollie kin in it. Was it out of focus or camera shake?Love your stuff Jared.
Reminds me of shooting with my Pentax K1000, apart from the variable ISO/ASA. That didn’t happen often, unless I was shooting Ilford XP-1.I’d love to visit your park for a film camera shoot. Hey the dinger just dinged!

I live in New Orleans so I spend quite a bit of time around the French Quarter photographing things. I have run into an array of lunatics amd depraved people who make photographing the area a hell. One street performer lady stopped me as I was walking to a shoot and posed for me to take her pic, I took the pic smiled and kept walking. She then started following me, claiming I needed to pay for the pic. When I told her no, and that I would just delete the photo, she lost it and started screaming hateful slurs. I just walked away as she kept yelling at me, ruined my morning, I'm sure she would have taken comfort in knowing that. Another time was just after the sun set and I was photographing a cathedral. First, a deranged white woman pretending she was on the phone was walking around the area yelling into the "phone" about how she was molested by a black preacher, and would vary from a normal calm speaking voice to a intolerable screaming and profanities voice. Eventually she started yelling racial slurs at blacks and was drove off from the area. Now, I think that woman 100% was crazy, as in needed to be in a mental institution, so people in the area took it easy on her until she began yelling racial slurs. Anyways, a short while after that I was still photographing the cathedral, I had my very expensive gear on a tripod and I was in the middle of framing the shot so I couldn't see around me, well this crazy homeless black lady came up on the side and pushed her cart into my setup almost knocking my camera over. I could see her coming up in the corner, but on the wide angle it still looked so far away and I didn't judge the distance properly. Well, she started yelling that I was keeping her awake and that I needed to take my camera somewhere else because it was illegal for me to be filming her (I wasn't, though she may have been sleeping on a bench somewhere, not sure). She said she would call the cops if I didn't stop, knowing that was bullshit I basically called her bluff and told her to go call them. Thankfully there was no damage, and the tripod I was using at that time was already old and knicked up it wasn't a big deal if she had put a scratch or two in the tripod, but I couldn't see any visible damage where she rammed it. Anyways, TLDR, people are crazy and it seems cameras really draw it out of people.

Wow. I was in Detroit and I was doing street photography. Everyone was polite and only one person said no. It was a good experience, I was expecting something like in your story to happen.
