Welcome to another 5 Min Portrait Video. This time around I just wanted to shoot, I didn't want to turn to the camera to explain what I was doing I just wanted to capture images.
With that said there is so much you can learn from watching me interact with Maria. You get to hear our interactions, you get to see what works and what does not. You have a front row seat to one of my photo shoots.
You will see every image pop up as its taken. You get to see the good with the bad as well as some that are not edited. The reason that some are not edited is they were not keepers to me.
For this photo shoot I used the Nikon D4 with the 300mm F2.8 AFS as well as the Nikon 70-200 2.8 VRII. The camera recording the video is the Nikon D800.

This was really insightful. It's nice to watch a raw photo shoot. Beginning to end; no commentary.
The good old days when Jared actually did photography stuff...the 5 min portrait series always did make me giggle in that the videos were about 30 min.
Its really interesting to see how certain poses look really awkward from the filming camera, but when you see the picture Jared takes, how it looks stunning from that angle.
I love the way you interact with people. You make it seem fun the entire time your taking pictures. You really do know how to make a person comfortable. Keep it up and good job man i hope to be like you one day.
Seriously? He's a dork.
Dorks can interact with people, you know?
Yes, of course. I see 12 year olds interacting with dorky 12 year olds frequently. Doesn't mean I want to stoop to that level.
He's the epitome of a nimrod dork.
WOW! Awesome work, Jared. Sure makes it easy when you have such a beautiful model to work with.
What is so awesome about an average looking girl in a hundred shots in front of the same lame garage door?
Jaime Delgado you do not have the right to insult the woman he is with, if there is ...just because he did not like this girl ? off the internet both of you.
Liliy ALL I think he can, because the dude probably doesn't live with anybody. Check out all the comments the guy left on this video (where he basically insults everyone) and you'll understand that nobody can actually share the same roof.
I love the way you put your effort and your relaxed behavior. The best thing is that you show it as if it is really easy to do.
SHE LOOKS SO AMAZING AND BEAUTIFUL IN THESE IMAGES! You are so beyond talented dude! I hope to learn and be somewhat as good as you one day! I literally had my jaw dropped at some of these!
+Megan Tipple LOL I had to laugh at your comment because have you looked in the mirror lately? Any compete portrait artist can make you look just as good if not better than the model in this video!
Jim Stainer Lol well that's my point, i"m just an amateur photographer but I want to learn and be able to make anyone I take photos of look flawless like this photographer did
This is my first time checking out Jared's work, he very good!
Thankyou very much for sharing, i really loved the 'fly on the wall aspect' there was no commentary or anything, nice and simple. thank you very much and would love to see you do something like this again
I recently bought a Canon Rebel T6 (premium kit). On a huge learning curve. This video was VERY helpful. Love that you showed how to do a basic photo shoot. Great for a beginner like me!
From this I've learned the most important aspect of portrait photography is having an accommodating, very pretty model. The rest just flows from there.
Aside from the funny comments, this is one of the best videos you've made, no talking to the camera and still so much to learn from it. Great work.
Damn she's gorgeous!
Dale Walker I agree with the learning part, but saying a girl is pretty does not make you a pervert; even if it is done on the Internet.
Fate agreed, I just blocked him he's clearly a dick, I know what a pervert is and he clearly doesn't, I just said she's pretty and that's all...expecially cause he said she was her first time modeling or something.
Every human is gorgeous....but the trick is that you capture it in a picture ;-)
And that is a trick that Jared masters.
AndreCorner You should just block him right away , I had couple of these scenarios on RUclips and people are dicks most of the times or they are trolling , yes she is gorgeous
Đorđe Gajanin I did block him after my first reply to him. As I said I was just referring to the fact that even if Jared pointed out she isn't modelling for a living nor she did this before she really comes out perfectly in the pictures, meaning she's both good at posing and really beautiful without too much makeup/post production/stylists etcetera.
That being said I replied once because I can't stand being called a pervert while I'm a normal guy which hangs out with girls and stuff and only stated "She's gorgeous"...which she is!
But well, it's the internet so you can expect everything :) Glad to see other people told him that making a compliment is not being a pervert :)
The most important element in this video?......your rapport with the model. Excellent.
Love it, I'm glad to see your showing us your skills and talents in the field again. These are the kind of videos I love to see and the kind that you were creating 2 years ago when you had the most views per video
i love these kinds of videos. the actual shots are shown as the shutter is released :) this made my day
You're so comfortable... Like you know exactly what you're doing and just having a good time
LOL
Channeling Peter Hurley, chin out n squint. Love it. Thanks JP
13:41 is my favorite shot. The color, the red against the blue, her look, the composition. Spot on.
Some of this comments here are killing me. The shots are great! And she seems happy with the end results. He did a great job not over directing the subject and keeping it light and free flowing. This was a pro style shoot in my opinion.
Nice job, Jared!! Now the shots we are seeing ... unedited? because I see some b&w shots ... did you shoot b&w from the camera or did you do it in post? Just trying to figure your flow during the shoot.. thanks! Gorgeous model!
Hey Jared, I really enjoyed the "fly on the wall" perspective video. It shows the real experience and challenges we usually go through when we do outside photography.
This is one of your best videos to date. So much fun. I enjoyed every second. I hope there is a part 2. Edit, printing, and discussions with the model about the shoot would be fun and educational. Working with people is my weak spot and yet it's what I like to do. So taking photos and then deleting them is what I consider fun and very nerve wracking. If that makes any sense at all. Thanks Jared!
Many thanks Jared I really enjoyed this post, you can learn a lot by observing a pro in action. Technique and gear will only get you so far, your good interpersonal skills brought out some great looks from your model. As mentioned below it would be nice to see your work flow and finished results from this shoot.
Nice work Jared, Love these sessions. It's great to see the interaction and how the model responds to you. Please do more.
This was very helpful. Really shows how to be professional with the model and how to work with a model.
I really appreciate you showing us your process unencumbered. I'm doing my first ever photo shoot this spring and this is teaching me quite a lot. Very informative.
Great video! Feel like I'm learning a lot from you, I'll certainly go back and watch all your portrait vids. Also, what camera and lenses were you using? The photos looked excellent
exactly. Its time for a new one as well.
Correct, thats the point, all images are edited. All the RAW files have to be edited and processed before they go out.
This was great to watch....and she is smoking! no Photoshop needed!
God, I got chills when I saw her smiling..She's unusually beautiful!
Jared great video. Please do more of these. I have learned quite a lot about telling people how to pose just from watching this.
I love the 30 min 5 min portrait! Thanks Jared. The model Beautiful. Great work you and her.
I love to see every shot right after the "click". Also the model is adorable!
Ya she's very cute. Wish I were closer...I'd love to book her. She's got a mellow attitude and that would be great for me since still a noob as far as portraits go. Thx for the video man👍
This is the kind of videos I really want to see from reviewers. Good job man!!
Beautiful set Jared! Great use of natural light. Personally, I find the compression of the 300 a little too much for this kind of headshot work, but it certainly does some incredible things to the background. Speaking of background, that door is effin brilliant!! Thanks again for keepin' it fresh, you've inspired me to get out and do a natural light session soon.
Thanks for the video. I think both the "fly on the wall" and the walking through your thoughts to the viewer approaches are both very helpful. I really dig that red garage door background, nice location
She's gorgeous... smart and easy to handle.you gain more confidence while shooting.. i love this vid.. wish i had those glass too lol...
You have to do more of these videos. Their was so much to learn about different poses and just how you go about a full shoot.
The model looks great. Two women I knew went out for a shoot. Both were attractive, but one was just soooo photogenic. She looked good live, but GREAT in the photos. The other came off looking like she does in real life.
Nice shoot. The shots in the late 19 minute sequence are the best, imo. She's gorgeous.
HI Jared, firs thanks for sharing and teaching us. I have a question about setting wen you shooting portrait, I use Canon camera. Which made you prefer I mean about, TV or manual. Aperture, shutter speed and Is in sunny day like these. Thanks.
You pretty much nailed these shots within the first 5, maybe 10 minutes of the shoot - are you just going longer for the professional feel or waiting to get something more out of her or something?
Awesome type of video! I can watch this all day
she is beautiful. nice work Jared. Awesome shots! Just awesome!
i feel like im not doing a good job when i shoot, but this makes me feel more confident!
ficaman15 u just practise on
The model is a knock out. Jared, great pics and mucho skills.
Hey Jared one question, how do you get such vibrant, popping colors with your photos? I know the amazing sharpness comes from the 2 thousand dollar lens, but with my d5300 and my kit lens I can never seem to get vibrant, popping colors like that.
Optactix4299 LOL I know this women who says she is a pro in one year.LOL Takes crapy pictures but spends time in light room to fix them, And they look pretty good .
+Dakoolguy111 Glass (lens) is always the key, don't worry so much about the body. The kit lens won't give you the full potential for your camera. If you see Jared Polin's videos, look at the kind of lenses he uses. If you want more blur and sharpness, you look for zoom lenses that have a fixed aperture. That means no matter the focal length, you can keep the aperture open. Good luck!
your right I really love that contrast /background I am learning so much from you I am still so new but Thank you So much for this.
I'm sure they've accumulated over time. I'm no you tube expert. Just saying I'm happy to see your getting out there and showing us again.
Also, excellent learning video on working with your subject. Watched the whole thing and loved every bit of it.
Leaning a lot from you, thank you very much Jared!
The shots you took using these lenses are incredible, but I keep reading/hearing to use a 50mm, for a crop sensor DSLR. What is your opinion on a "Portrait" lens?
Any lens can be a portrait lens, really. It all depends on what you want really. 50mm's are overrated, because of their cheap price (which isn't a bad thing). After figuring out my style a bit more, I realized that I like longer lenses, because of the tight, flattering perspective I can get with the longer focal length and the distance between my subject. I rarely use my 50 now. They're great for learning though!
The 50mm is great, but you have to be so close to your model. I really like the 85mm, 135mm, and 200mm for headshots
I'm doing my first shoot in a few days and this helped! thanks Jared
The conversations seem awkward and forced, but the shooting is great. Not a huge fan of the processing on some of these color, but you're stellar as usual. Thanks for the video, we can all learn from somewhere and I love your info!
I love it.. 1 minute and "I think we are done". You just have to get 'that' shot and no more really when you are pro.
Jared, when you do a portrait photoshoot like this, do your clients tell you what they want - what "look" they are after, or do you tell them what will work best, or a mix?
Very nice... How heavy are those lens? If you have an 85 mm, would you have used it? I know you like the 300mm.
It was really informative to see how you do your shoots from a strickly observational point of view. one thing; i was really hoping at the end of the vid you would go over some of the shots you took, some of the shots you took that maybe didnt make the cut and what your best ones were.
Thank you for posting this. What lens were you using on the D800 while you were recording?
I had my first portrait gig today with a young lady, for some graduation pictures(weird coincidence) and this 30+ minute session was a nice candid look into the minutiae of directing your subject. Thanks!
Awesome!!! Glad to see one of these long shoots again. How far are you from releasing the flash tutorial??
he looks nerves and amaturish but i love it! make me feel like what im doing isnt wack! yEEEEE good shit jared!
Great video. Please do more like this. Also I didn't know you were based in Philly. Do you do any workshops or photowalks?
I fell in love when you said "CAR!...Game on"
The color from the 300mm f/2.8 is beautiful!
the model and the wall made the day!
Personally I only use my light meter when I shootings with strobes to adjust the light ratio, otherwise I just use the light meter built into the camera.
I noticed from watching some of these 5 min portrait videos that you do really use much in the lines of fill flash or any reflectors to bring out the detail in the eyes. Is there a reason behind this or is it merely personal preference? Actually now that I go full screen I am noticing some reflection in her eyes are there additional light sources outside of the frame?
Jared Polin great work as always Jared. Thank you! Which lens do you suggest for a similar setup on Micro 4/3 (E-M1 + E-M5) ?
Excellent video! Love to see much more video's like this from you. Please keep these kind of video's coming!
all the shots look good ! shes gorgeous
Jared you ROCK! so inspiring!
Love watching Jared work. Great video
Yes, one of his best.
Great shots man and excellent video. Having a gorgeous model must help as well.
Awesome tutor, I learned so much from you about posing and controlling model. Great thanks!
Hello Sir...
Mein Confusion me hu ki koun sa DSLR camera Kharidu.
Portrait, Nature Aur Fast Freeze Photography Ke Liye??
Aur Meine Sony Alpha SLT-58K or ILCE 3500J K bare me socha hu.
Budget about 40-50K..
Please Hepl Me..
:)
I don't think I saw a bad photo. lol Very awesome job by the photographer and really pretty model to work with.
Thats him locking in the focus three separate times. That happens often when using the focus and recompose method. I doubt if he is moving his focus points
SLRlounge might be the best kept secret on RUclips. They might have Jared's personality, but their knowledge and photography and post processing is pretty amazing.
This is great, Jared. Very informative. A friend just asked me to do her headshots, these tips are invaluable!
Everything around the 14min mark and the 20 min mark. AMAZING. Also, to the "same shot over and over wtf" commenters. This is a PHOTOSHOOT. Pick your perfect spot to shoot your subject, and fire away for easily 75+ shots without even "going crazy". Go through them with a fine tooth comb and pick your absolute favs. If you can't see the subtle differences in these photos and what it is that makes them all extremely different, then you need to go back to exposure fundamentals.
Thank you for the video! May I ask what's the voice recorder that you use? Thank you in advance :))
Great job Jared! Thanks for this video. Learned alot today!
Great video giving you an insight to model photography.
Wow, this was awesome video. I can really see that you're pro photographer.
And Maria looks absolutely beautiful.
Dude the guy is a good photographer, the shots looked pretty good. The guy has been doing this for 18 years, so he does have experience. Obviously he could use more equipment but they must have been roaming around for a good spot so you can't go carrying extra stuff all the time.
Videos like this are awesome, we can learn a lot
thanks
Love the guy behind you, who sneaks out and takes a snapshot at 14:10 hahah
Great shots and Beautiful model.
nope, you can hear the focus beep in the video.
When your used to the focus and recompose method, its normal. It's just a way to guarantee focus by constantly checking focus
I dont even watch Jared no more but I remember the day this came out and I was watching and writing notes.loool
good old times when Jareds channel was superior, without all the sniffing mailing etc crap, only inpiring and right to the point vids for inpiration and education. Wish he could bring this series back in 2016
He still does this.
Awesome video, love to see more of these! She is gooorgeous!
Great video Jared, thanks for doing this. Funny, I was thinking I had time for a 5 minute video... Then I heard you say you were at 9 minutes. So I checked how long the video was and got a good chuckle!
14:29 is the best shot, beautiful model Jarid !
