      @@froknowsphoto hi! I'm debating whether to buy the canon 80d or the Nikon 7500 as my first DSLR
      I want to 90% of the time use it for only photos and maybe 10% of the time for video
      Now I am a beginner
      But I dont want to buy a low end camera (nor a super high end) and then have to sell it and upgrade.
      I want one where I will of course have to spend this certain amount of money, but I can grow my skills with it and then when I reach the limits of this camera i can simply just upgrade to a higher end camera.
      Can you please help me out?

      @@DarkestKnight2424 I was surprised with the camera that you wanted to use, But I recommend Nikon D5600 as a Good primary Image shooting and D7500 is Much Better but I Personally think that investing in Lenses on D5600 Body is Much More better than Buying an expensive body thus will result in Having a Hard time to Get Some Good or professional Lenses. (The reason why I Recommended Nikon is Because It is Better In skin tones for Portraits and Actually has Good Color than Most Entry level or Maybe close Range for The D5xx Series pf Nikon compare to Canon cameras.

    Jared, this video was incredible. It's not often that us viewers get live and detailed insight into photoshoots like this. It was awesome to see that you still make some minor miscalculations You don't realize how valuable that is to us new photographers! Usually we only see your best shots, but seeing you progress through exposures and find your shots was so profoundly helpful. Thank you so much for this! Can't wait for the workflow! 😉

    There's nothing quite so magical as reality portraits. I'm lucky enough to spend much if my working life doing exactly this kind of work, and I quite often use kit lenses - mainly because of their convenience. They're produced to be a "jack of all trades" for users who don't necessarily know what to do with them. However, in the hands of someone who DOES know how to get the best out of them, the results are indistinguishable from MUCH more expensive glass under normal conditions. Loved the video - so much common sense, and no ranting..... brilliant!

    I have been a professional video producer for local and network telelvion for almost 35 years. I started using DSLRs about 4 years ago. As a production/creative manager at a local television station, I've moved my creative production department from using traditional camcorders to Canon's Cinema series cameras.... from videography to cinematography. Our station uses an 70D for video too. Personally, I own a Canon 70D and Canon 80D. You've confirmed what I have experienced using an 80D. I think the Canon 80D is the best all round DSLR for video. I use and own pro lenses too. But I am very impressed with the 80D's EFS 18-135 kit lens. You created on of the best videos for real world use!

    Hey Jared, thank you so much for uploading the Raw files. They look awesome! You just convinced me to switch from a full frame Sony A-Mount system(A99 and Zeiss glass) and start again with Canon. Don´t get me wrong, Sony had a great system with the A-Mount stuff and I´m also happy with my A6000, but, I´m tired of the usual Sony nonsense. You know, inconsistent AF, very overpriced lenses, constant shortage of supply here in Mexico and the abrupt death of the A-Mount with no regard for their customers investments. I´ll just have to cut my losses, sell my gear for a huge loss and restart my collection with a company that understands how to support their customers.
    On another note, I´m just stunned at how much better the Canon kit lenses are compared to Sony´s. I am truly amazed at how detailed and colourful the images look. I´ll buy into Canons top tier cameras and lenses eventually, but I´m sure I can keep my clients and do my job with the less expensive, sturdier and sometimes much better Canon gear.
    Keep up the great work mate!

    • @bigdave46148
      @bigdave46148 8 лет назад

      I just want to say, don't jump on the Canon bandwagon with out doing your research. I am not knocking Canon because they do make good cameras and lenses, but, from what I have seen, Canon lenses can be as much as or more then a good used car.
      That being said, all the camera companys have lenses that can be as much as a good used car. What I am saying is, if you are going to switch to a new system, look at not only Canon but also Nikon, and Pentax. You might be surprised at what you will find.

    • @MunirHamdan
      @MunirHamdan 8 лет назад

      Thank you for the advice mate, you are completely right of coarse. I have owned Sony, Canon, Fuji, Panasonic and Olympus cameras and have limited experience on Nikons. Every system has cheap and very expensive offerings, some better than others on every mount.
      What I meant to imply is that I have been burned by Panasonic and Olympus when they just up and left the Mexican market a few weeks after I bought an OMD EM-5. They gave no notice and no support for their customers. I had to sell that system at a huge loss. At the time I was still investing in my A-Mount gear after switching from Canon, and lets face it, four years later I have a camera with a better sensor and video performance than a 5D MK3. But, Sony has clearly killed off the A-Mount, and again, I have to sell my gear at a huge loss, or buy a tiny camera, stick an adapter that cripples their AF performance and makes for a highly unbalanced combo from a company that has already demonstrated how uncommitted they remain to their customers. I´m tired of this cycle, and now, I just want to purchase my gear from a company that will offer me security for a very long time. I was between Canon, Nikon or Fuji, but the dual pixel AF and the improved sensor performance(still not on par with Nikon/Sony but almost there) on the 80D seems to be a killer deal. Add to that the great value of the 24mm f2.8, the 40mm f2.8, the 50mm f1.4 and the 85mm f1.8 and it seems like a killer system. Any of those lenses, beats any of the Sony offerings on the price/performance ratio.
      I don´t know about all you Sony people, but I´m getting out before I gut burned even worse.
      Cheers mate!

    • @bigdave46148
      @bigdave46148 8 лет назад +1

      I understand what you are saying completely and feel your pain. Here where I live in the USA, it is hard for me to go to camera stores and look for new lenses or bodies. Generally speaking, none of the brick and mortar stores carry the system I use new. One of the stores I can drive to did get in the latest and greatest bodies but that is all.
      I am just going to throw this out there. I normally try not to push any brand name, but in this case I think I will. If you have any photo stores that you shop at the carry Pentax, take a look at the K1. The K1 is Pentax's first full frame digital camera. Price wise, it is priced at 1,800 here in the states. I will be honest though. Pentax does not push video very much so the K1 wouldn't be worth it if you do a lot of video. Also, Pentax is really not known to be a sports camera. The auto focus is not as fast as Nikon or Canon but I have taken pictures of race cars running 230 MPH with my Pentax and got them in focus.
      Like I said in my first post, do your research and I am sure you will like what you get in the end.

    Loved it Jared.
    I hope this goes some way to stopping all the pixel-peeping that people get hung up about. You can wish your life away waiting for the next greatest camera but, in truth, any DLSR, from the big manufacturers, in the last 5 years (even their entry-level models) can produce amazing results.
    Some of the greatest photos of ALL TIME are grainy and, in some cases, actually blurred. Nobody cares if it captures a moment and tells a story.
    Loved the video, would love to see more of this type.
    Keep on annoying the pixel-peepers.

    Jared - if you'd be interested in visiting one of the the oldest commission textile dye houses in the country, still running right in Philadelphia - let me know. It's truly taking a step back a few centuries, going back four generations in the same family, taking up a city block in Kensingston. The business has machinery going back to the early 1900's. And as far as photography, imagine lots of steam from an industrial boiler powering the entire plant with infinite colors of yarn, winders, dyers, and most importantly, great people. Appreciate all the work you do in Philly Jared - thanks!

    I did chuckle at the fact that the guy's expression never changed but it really worked for the pics. Seems like a nice little factory too. Fantastic video. Im looking into the 80d as an upgrade for my very worn out nikon d3200. This video sold me. Excellent work. Amazed at the quality of the shots considering 1600 ISO. Anything above 400 is unusable on the d3200.

    As a couple of other commenters have said, great review and real world test of the 80D and kit lens. I like the way you get out there and use the camera and lens and not have it sit on a table and say something like," This camera can do this if I would pick it up and use it. Maybe I will do that tomorrow."
    Hopefully, you will do what you said you were going to do back in February and get your hands on a Pentax K1 and a couple of lenses and use it for a little while just to see what it is like.

    (I'm at 10 min, still watching)
    Correct me if my method is wrong...I think I would use Aperture Priority in this scenerio and use iso 800 to start off. Basically if anything's over exposed, I just use that exposure compensation and make it -1,-2 ect .. if it's under exposed then I would use +1,+2 on the exposure compensation.
    if the shutter speed shows too low(vulnerable to shake), then I will increase the iso.

    • @XeroNera

      Oh and Thank You Jared for this amazing video, I am enjoying it

    • @froknowsphoto
      @froknowsphoto  8 лет назад +14

      I stay away from Aperture Priority. Being in a situation where the light is pretty much not changing why let the exposure be thrown off by the background light. Simply moving your shutter speed is the same as -1 -2 so on and so forth.

    • @filipgurcinovski319
      @filipgurcinovski319 8 лет назад

      You can do that, but by keeping it in manual, you can change the settings more accordingly. For example if you prioritise the shutter, the camera may pick a very high shutter speed, which won't let you capture motion in your images. by keeping it in manual you have complete control of all the settings.

    • @filipgurcinovski319
      @filipgurcinovski319 8 лет назад +1

      Also, I wasn't finished watching the video while I wrote my comment, but Jared explained why he didn't need aperture priority at 55:55

    In my APS-C experience, the 18-135 is probably the most flexible lens in the Canon lineup. For photos, any version will do. Try the newer ones if you do a lot of video.

  • @royezekielmarkjose1196
    @royezekielmarkjose1196 4 года назад +1

    80D is so perfect it's very addicting to use. The focusing is just fun, screen or viewfinder. this will be hard to top by canon. i dont need 4k video, i dont have unlimited supply of hard drives. and aps-c after 2015 is not that significantly under full frame anymore. pair these with a 24 or 28mm pancake lense and it's also the perfect street camera. not into electronic viewfinder or rangefinder of mirrorless yet.

    So true. I have a Canon 550d with 18 to 55 and 75 to 300 kit lenses. Instead of upgrading my gear, I decided to spend my time taking a photography course and the improvements I am making are obvious. Without some basic understanding of photography principles, what's the point in getting a pro-level camera and lens?
