    This is a "5 Min Portrait" using the Canon SL3 DSLR to capture a glass blower in action. I started off with the Kit Lens but soon after switched over to some better glass. The point of the video is to one review the SL3 and two, show you that a cheap camera can still capture "professional" photos.

    I think Jared missed the whole point of this video by using professional lenses, people buying this camera will most likely use the kit lens and even the 50mm 1.8 before upgrading to anything else, that should've been the focus on this video, besides I feel like you are so spoiled by mirrorless and FF lenses now that it's seems like you almost forgot how to use manual focus! I wonder what you'd do with an analogue camera... Anyway great video!

    I own this camera and I have been looking for this type of video since I got it. As a newbie, it can get demoralising when you can only find videos of professional photographers using high end modern mirrorless cameras like the Sony Alpha series or Canon's R series. Seeing a professional use my camera and getting beautiful shots like these serves as reassurance that I have a capable device and that all I need to focus on right now is getting better at my craft. When it comes to lenses, I agree with everything that was said here. I replaced my kit lens with the 50mm f1.8 STM within a month of using it. I've also been working to get the 70-200mm and it was so great seeing it on this camera body. Aside from taking superb pictures, it cranks up the camera's overall aesthetics. 👌🏿 Thank you so much for this Jared. You're inspiring many upcoming photographers all over the world. Disappointed with the video. I thought it would show how to take the best pictures possible with an entry level setup. Spending 5 min with the kit lens then switching to L lens is not useful for anyone. I don't think anyone using L lens is pairing it with an SL3. What would have been more valuable is to talk about the limitations of the kit lens, and how to address them. Perhaps suggesting to move to the nifty fifty and showing how to use that, not switching to glass that's out of scope for an SL3 user.
    This is similar to your video on how to take pictures with that $400 Nikon kit that was on sale. You used the kit lenses for 5 minutes then busted out the 2.8 professional glass. Nobody buys a $400 setup and then gets a $2000 lens to use with it.

    • @ReversusLaxus
      @ReversusLaxus 5 лет назад

      True.
      But still, he used the kit lens and called out the limitations (only "snap-shot-like cause you don't get bokeh), but you can use creative angles. What more do you wish of such a lens and someone who doesn't uses it regularly?

    I recommend always using the center AF point on inexpensive cameras because the center AF point tends to be the most accurate, by far. You can get 1/3 stops on Rebel bodies by using exposure compensation, BTW.

    • @thesharpercoder
      @thesharpercoder 5 лет назад +2

      Jared, why break out the expensive glass? Not many with that camera will use any of those lenses. Why didn’t you use the “nifty fifty”, EF 50mm f/1.8 STM?

    • @thesharpercoder
      @thesharpercoder 5 лет назад +1

      Jared, you are having metering issues because while the AF point might be wherever you move it, that camera is still metering with the center AF point. This is another reason to only use the center AF point, and recompose the shot, with these types of cameras..

    You can do a lot with a cheap lense and cheap camera. At the end of the day, it's the photographer and not the gear. If you were new, learn the gear rater than investing early. Learn to use manual focus and compositions. You can get extremely high quality lenses for really good price because they lack auto focus. If you practice, enough, you can focus with f1.8 faster and more accurately than the cheap camera can most of the time.

    I have a Canon t5i and have used a couple different types of lenses on it including the kit lens and 70-200. The highest I will push my iso on it is 1600. Never have gone above it because it becomes so noisy. Even at 1600 it definitely gives me a lot of noise, even at f1.8 in a dark environment where I'm running a shutterspeed of 1/125. So, I have to make sure I'm finding the right shots to expose well enough to be editable in post. But, using the brush and switching it to Clarity setting and turning the Clarity all the way down to -100 and using that to brush over the background and whatever else I don't want to have noise. It makes a MASSIVE difference. Just learning what works and what you can get away with. 3200 I tried and it was just....mush haha.

      Also does shooying the flame does any damage to the lens...beside you melt it if you get to close.
      And I'm guessing if you did decide to take flame pics you would want to use the dydinium glasses germlion is wearing

      i meant that good glass accompanied by a inexpensive body can produce better results than cheap glass and a cheap body. if you don't have skill, all the expensive gear in the world mean nothing. i really should have to spell that out for you

      It must be. They sell a 4000D with a Digic 4+. Almost the same soc that is on my 60D from like 9 years ago. Sensors and processors for cameras have come a long way since then. I compared my 60D's ISO 3200 and 6400 shots with a friend's D3400 and the D3400 keeps so much more detail and handles noise so much better.

    I still use the SL1 and before getting a 70-200, I would get a 17-50 f/2.8 from either Tamron or Sigma. I got the Sigma for around 200 and it is amazing. I did some portraits and baby shoots with that for friends and they were very happy with the results. It is a bit like a bag of primes at f/2.8. :-)

    Great video Jared!! For the EVF vs OVF you have a point here. EVF is better in situations like this in your video, with constantly changing light. But because I am using OVF for years I’ve got accustomed to the light meter behavior of my DSLR (800D) and I can have nearly perfect exposure 9 times out of 10. The most difficult situation with OVFs is in Manual mode where you can ruin the exposure if you are in hurry. In my opinion, in this session you should have tried Aperture Priority and Auto ISO, then you can adjust only your EV to nail the exposure. Forget the Manual ISO when in Aperture Priority in this camera because you can’t set minimum shutter speed!

    What's really great about this video are the images that Jared has released.
    I checked them out and I was fascinated by how good his edits look even though he didn't do a whole lot. It seems that nearly all of the edits were basic exposure and tone curve settings.

    I have an old t2i with the kit lenses. I did exactly what you said. I bought a good piece of glass.At that time it was the 70-200mm first gen no stabilization. Still got way better shots than with the original lenses. Give a camera a better eyeball and it will seem like you bought a new body. P.S. I now have a 5dmk4 and 5ds body. Thanks for all you do Fro.

    These videos are amazing for learning composition thought process and on the spot decision making. Also watched the one in the Pizzeria. It was amazing. But I agree with most that you should've stuck with the 18-55 mm or gone with a 50 mm 1.8 where necessary. That would've helped people understand better, how to get the most out of the limited gear that they have.

    A wonderful video, a great example of what you have to try to get the best shot. Thank you for leaving in all the things you didn't do right in the video. I think this is one of your best video you have ever shown. This is a great training tool. Kudos to you. My wife just came in and ask what was I watching because it sounded so interesting and informative. I have to pass this on to my photography friends who think just taking one or two shots is all they need to do. Again a great video.
