    Good S5 intro on setup-- I subbed. I noticed that you use an Minolta vintage lens. I have several MD lenses from my 80's film days so I am also am considering this S5 similarly. If you use one, which MD adapter works well for the S5?

      @graphiknation  3 года назад

      Hey JJ, thanks so much for watching and subscribing. I love using my Minolta MD lenses on the S5! The adapter that I was able to find on Amazon is made by Fotasy, and I like the one I have. I have found these inexpensive, passive adapters to be somewhat hit or miss. Some of them will fit comfortably and feel secure, and others may have a little tension or looseness in the fit. The one I have for the L-L fits well for me, and the release button is smooth to operate. I do have other Fotasy adapters with release buttons that stick and resist a little though, so I am not sure I can guarantee you will receive the exact same kind of fit(?) They are pretty inexpensive though, so you could always pick up a second one if you don't like the fit or the feel of it. Here is a link to the one that I have: (Fotasy) Minolta MD to L Mount Adapter: @t Thanks again for watching, and I hope you find a good adapter for your MD lenses!

I just don't like variable apertures, and the long reach and constant f/4 on the 24-105 is pretty spectacular. I will probably end up selling the 20-60 and putting that money toward getting the 24-105.

    • @graphiknation
      @graphiknation  3 года назад

      Hey Simon, I hear you. The EVF is really the only disappointing aspect of the S5 (IMO). I guess it doesn't bother me as much because it's the same resolution as my G85, so I don't mind it. I do agree though, they really should have done better with that feature, in keeping up with the current competition. It really makes no sense at all that it wouldn't have (at minimum) the same EVF as the G9 and GH5. Anyway, sorry it did not work for you, I hope you find a perfect fit, either in the S1 or something else. Thanks so much for watching and your comment.

    • @mr5string

      @@graphiknation totally agree with you. My problem is that my main camera is the Leica SL2, the EVF on that is around 6M and totally a dream to use. I suppose i’ve been spoiled. What do you think about the EVF of the S5 after one year with the S1 ?

    • @graphiknation
      @graphiknation  3 года назад +1

      Hey Didier, thanks for watching and for your very good question! I only had the S1 for a very short time (maybe about 3 months), so it's been a while since I gazed into that gorgeous display! I was a little bummed when I learned the S5 would not have that outstanding EVF, but I guess compromises had to be made somewhere. Anyway, for me it's the same EVF as my G85, so there is no difference from what I have been using for a while now. If I had been using something like the GH5 or the G9, which both have a higher res EVF, I may feel differently(?), but I guess it's hard to say without knowing from everyday experience. It's a fine EVF, but it's definitely not the most exciting feature in the S5. It's actually probably the worst thing about the camera in my opinion, which makes it a little disappointing but not a deal breaker. It's totally fine. It's not fancy like the S1, but it works just fine. Thanks again for watching and for your question, I hope my answer helps a little.

    • @DidierMOULINPhotography
      @DidierMOULINPhotography 3 года назад +1

      @@graphiknation thanks a lot for taking the time to answer even thought you can’t compare precisely. But I’m afraid it’s a deal breaker for me as I wear glasses and this so small EVF reminds me of the one on Nikon Z series, reason why I switched from Nikon DSLR to hybrid Panasonic S1 series. I wanted to switch to hybrid and the only appealing body with decent EVF was the Lumix S1, if not the SL2... ;) thanks again and take care

      @graphiknation  3 года назад

      @@DidierMOULINPhotography I hear you, and I totally can understand and agree. It's a very personal decision to make, and we all have our top priorities. The S1 is an outstanding camera, and if you are happy with it and the EVF is a large part of your reason for choosing it, I would definitely stick with it. Also, you never know what is to come in future versions, so you might just wait for the next release. The S1 is still superb! :)

    • @DidierMOULINPhotography
      @DidierMOULINPhotography 3 года назад +1

      @@graphiknation ho yes it is superb. I was interested by the S5 for its size... but the EVF is a huge error they made according to me as it’s part of the L mount and we all know that M lenses owners would have been happy with a nice and slim S1 like... a kind of CL full frame

    • @graphiknation
      @graphiknation  3 года назад

      @@DidierMOULINPhotography I don't disagree with you, it was an unfortunate choice. I am not sure why they didn't make the EVF at minimum as good as other more recent high end cameras. It's not like the price is that much cheaper than the S1, so it seems like an odd choice, and a glaring weakness. Maybe they wanted to keep the S1 uniquely competitive in that regard?

  • @user-lh5gq2fg3h
    @user-lh5gq2fg3h 3 года назад +1

    Hey, Lauren~ I've enjoyed your introduction of S1 & S5. I just have a simple question, maybe not simple. I am a documentary film maker, usually filming in the Himalayas, Mongolia, Alaska, etc. I have used GH5 & G85 for my work. However, a few months ago I've bought S1H and Lumix 24-105 F4 and Sigma 35mm F1.4. Now I am thinking of changing GH5/G85 to S1 or S5 as a kind of sub camera. In terms of the function and visual performance, which one do you recommend S1 or S5? Or should I keep GH5 if I can afford a new one? I cannot decide it. And, the size and weight of a camera is not my concern.

    • @graphiknation
      @graphiknation  3 года назад

      Hey thanks so much for watching and thanks for your question. It's a tough one, but I will try and give as much insight into how I would approach making the hard choices. All the cameras you mentioned are of course very capable and excellent build quality, so it's gonna come down to your preferences and shooting needs. If size and weight are not a factor, than the biggest difference between the S1 & S5 comes down to the LCD and EVF. For me, the fully-articulating screen is a deal breaker, so the S5 is my personal choice. The trade off though is losing that much higher quality EVF resolution that the S1 has, which is something to consider. The S5 has the same lower resolution EVF as your G85 (which as I'm sure you know is fine) but nothing special and certainly a disappointment when compared to the S1 models.
      As for the GH5, I have never owned one but I know it is a powerful and wonderful camera for film and video. I personally am invested in maintaining both M4/3 and FF systems, as I find they compliment each other very well. I touch on this in my video about vintage lenses on the S1. If you want to give that a look, here is that link (skip to 4:28): ruclips.net/video/wsyfyukFCQ0/видео.html
      My thought is this, you can double your lens kit by sharing lenses with the appropriate adapters across both systems. As an example, 50mm on FF becomes 100mm on M4/3 so you get 2 different looks from the same lens. I also love the M4/3 format for telephoto shooting because with the 2X crop factor, you can pick up something like the Pana-Leica 50-200mm 2/2.8-4.0 and get a 100-400mm equivalent in an extremely light and small size at a great price. Something similar on FF would be overwhelmingly larger and more expensive. If the Leica is outside of your budget, the LUMIX 100-300mm is great lower cost option on M4/3, giving you 200-600mm equivalent, the trade off of course is loss of aperture since it's only a f/4-5.6.
      If you look at the 24-105mm f/4 lens on the S1H, the Pan-Leica 50-200mm f/2.8-4.0 picks up right where the 24-105 leaves off. So you can carry the S1H with the 24-105, in combination with the GH5 + 50-200mm and cover nearly any focal length you desire without ever changing lenses. The only exception of course will be when you want that prime aperture for low light/shallow DOF.
      I don't know what type of lenses you have invested in for your M4/3 kit, but I personally have some very nice glass on M4/3 and I love the system for so many reasons. It's a hard choice to make but hopefully I have given you some things to consider in making the best choice for your shooting needs. Thanks so much for watching, and best of luck in your search for the best "sub camera" to add to your gear bag.

    Hi!
    What about your experience so far with this S5?
    Especially the Screen and viewfinder with manual focus lenses. Easy to focus?
    I am very tempted to add one to my Fuji Xpro 3, especially for night street shooting. But that small viewfinder (and I wear glasses) makes me hesitate a lot with the S1 (who can be found almost new fo less than a new S5...)... Thanks

    • @graphiknation
      @graphiknation  3 года назад +1

      Hey Yoann, thanks so much for watching and for your question. It’s a good one, and I’m so glad you asked it. My best answer is that it’s very subjective, based on your needs and priorities. I can most certainly confirm that the EVF is far inferior to the spectacular EVF in the S1. I do recall (and miss very much) the feeling of amazement and sheer joy of using the beautiful displays on the S1, so I can easily see how that might be the tipping point for some. If this is a high priority feature for you, I would absolutely get the S1 over the S5. For me, the articulating screen was my deal breaker. I was not crazy about the heavy size and weight of the S1, but I did kind of get used to it, so I could have lived with that had I liked the tilting screen more.
      On the S5, I prefer using the LCD screen for manual focusing, with focus peaking turned on at the highest setting. It works excellent for me in most scenarios. The exception of course is when there is very low light and low contrast, the focus peaking struggles to find edges that show clear enough focus (I think however this is true with all cameras in low light and low contrast situations). When I switch to the EVF, I find it displays a little darker, so I increased the brightness of my displays. The down side is that both are affected, so the LCD appears a little brighter, and the EVF displays a little darker. I wish I could customize the brightness individually (if that's possible I haven’t figured it out yet, LOL). I do not wear glasses while shooting, and the EVF on the S5 is familiar to me, since it is the same resolution of my G85 so I don’t mind it. It’s not spectacular like the S1, but it works just fine. I also shoot a lot of street and night photography, and most of the time with street lights and reflections, etc, you should have enough contrast in the scene to get focus, but obviously that will not always be the case.
      Thanks again for watching, and for your question. I hope my answer helps a little towards reaching a decision on which camera fits your needs better. They are both superb, with some key differences of course.

      Hi Aaron,
      I have a few of them, 2 regular adapters and one close/macro focus adapter. Here are some links to some options for you. The Fotasy will be the least expensive, and I haven’t really had any issues with my Fotasy adapters (although some will say they are too cheaply made and you should spend a little more). I think the Haoge are decent quality at a moderate price, and of the Leica is the best one but it’s very expensive. You can check out my video on vintage lenses on the S1 if you’re interested.

      Here are some links for you to browse:
      Fotasy M to L Adapter (cheapest):

      Haoge M to L Mount Adapter:

      Haoge M to L Mount Adapter with Macro Focusing:

      Leica adapter, much more $$$ with added connections to give you metadata and improves focusing with magnification. Not sure if those features translate to other non-Leica bodies(?) I would hope so for the price:

      Hope this is helpful, thanks so much for watching!

      @@ItsAaron90 Sorry Aaron, I must have misunderstood your question. Just to be clear, you have vintage Olympus OM lenses that you want to adapt to the L Mount? Or some other system?
