Definitely a good effort. Wish it would have worked, but it is what it is I guess. Buying the Activated Charcoal from a pet store is definitely a good idea. You could even buy the filter cartridges that have the white filter media and a plastic strainer with the charcoal inside. Thanks for sharing this info.
Hi Billy Joe. I remember a while back you made a forge. I wonder if it would create enough heat to open up the pores in the charcoal cloth. Of course you couldn't take it out into the woods with you... Mmmm you've got me thinking about this one. Don't give up Billy Joe I have a feeling you will figure it out. In the meanwhile I will take your advice and go buy some activated charcoal at the fish store and throw it in my pack.
good idea bob , just might try some other ideas . but i think keeping a fish tank filter in your pack will be there when you need it .good to here from you brother .. billy joe
i went back out to check the colors and really think some redness came out ,, so maybe i did almost make activated underwear charcoal.. well then , maybe another try is worthy..
billy joe denny - did you filter the "underwear water" multiple times through your filter? I wonder if you did it three times, would it improve each time. I'm thinking a good hardwood campfire snuffed out by covering it, or drowning it with water, would make charcoal. Then if it was all dried out, you could crush it up and pack it in your bottle. Still use the cloth, or grass or even a sock (if your stripping out in the woods anyway, who needs socks? 😉) Filter the water multiple times. Should be an easy experiment... worth a try! Thanks for showing your experiments!!!!! 👍🏻👍🏻
I wouldn't drink the water...might taste like doodoo ! :D Regardless, I recall back in high school, we were forced to read a book called "Fahrenheit 451" in which there was a lot of book burning going on...and it was said that the paper in the books would spontaneous combust if they reached that (flashpoint) temperature of 451 degrees. I wouldn't imagine that the cotton in Underoos is much different that the paper as far as minimum combustion temperature goes. The flashpoint of dry firewood is around 572 degrees F. Getting a wood fire up to 1200 degrees F is pretty easy outdoors...and maybe more than 2000 degrees F if burning Osage Orange / hedge apple, one of the hottest woods / BTU producing...not advisable for indoor wood stoves...will make them glow...and may shoot sparks a lot too...if the wood has been properly seasoned / dried out ahead of time. That wood will really smoke and stink up a campsite if not seasoned first. ICK !!
@@billyjoedenny To be honest, I've never made char cloth before. I suppose it's possible to get a fire too hot and the material inside the tin would simply turn to ashes from combusting rather than charring. But I suppose that little hole poked into the tin is what's supposed to limit the air into the tin to keep the material from flaming up. I don't know. I guess I was partly answering someone else's question as to how hot a wood fire can get without adding forced air like in a forge. I had researched various types of wood for fires to see if any of the wood fires would get hot enough to melt down gold which has a melting temp of 1943 degrees F....without needing forced air or a blow torch. I don't have any gold to melt down just yet...but do have the prospecting interest. I just wish I lived in a state that had better geology sources for gold. Indiana ain't where it's at !! :D , Brad
What's the exact parameters for making activated charcoal I thought from all those videos from you tubers you could cram grass and camp fire charcoal in a plastic bottle and be fine I guess it was fake news!😉 If you used a shop vac to blow air into an enclosed fire could you achieve the temps required to activate hardwood or some coconut shells? Great vid brother 👍
thanks donnie , I'm trying to keep it simple for a bad situation like a bushcraft filter. i guess its not a simple job . I'm sure i could build a working project with larger furnace and forced air, billy joe
It sounds like you skipped the step that makes it activated. Try mixing some lemon juice if you don't want to use lye, 1:3 juice/water and soak for 24 hours then rinse the charcoal, and cook it in you oven till dry. the acid is what activates the coal.
So you burned a pair of underwear? I've burned a few myself and scorched many more. :-) That wasn't a sacrifice that is just common knowledge for what you do with them kinda underwear, it's easier than burying them. No way that was gonna work. Them underwear was already explosive guncotton before you started the experiment. This was a funny one Denny. Thanks for the laughs.
The smaller the pellets the better. Soak it in water to see. If the water is clear the next day the. You are good. However most home made methods will not accomplish this.
Sorry I have been gone. Back and here to support you again. Great video my friend
