making activated charcoal appears almost too hard for diy. good demo nevertheless. I am impressed always with your curiosity, energy and determination to make things and solve challenges. I’m afraid that in a survival situation guys like you would last longer, but have a need to assign burial duty to the slackers like me.

Simplicity in times of great hardship can mean the difference between life and death. Quality of life is of great importance as well in times where life is in real danger.
God bless you in your endeavors to find a solution that could benefit us all .

Excellent test Billy Joe. I don't know why but I have a feeling you know how to make activated charcoal in the woods. Will you be doing a video on that?
On a different note. Dang you lost some weight brother looking good..👍

Lots of videos on youtube about how to make your own/home based water purification systems... I used manufactured activated charcoal (fish store quality) in my purification systems and I'm quite happy with them...cheaper, easier to make and store extra activated charcoal just in case we need them! Safe water purification systems to you and yours always!

Last time I tried to filter water with charcoal, it came out tasting like a mixture of hickory and lighter fluid. Could be that we're not supposed to use Kingsford charcoal briquettes ?? just a hunch :D

Yeah, i hope no one uses "man made" "barbeque bricks" the pure carbon "natural charcoal" is the type to use.
Its the difference of smoking a dried tobacco leaf vs a manufacturer's cigarette...

This sort of "filter" is pretty common with bushcrafters and preppers, but they're about as effective as pouring water over a leaf to make tea. Right idea, wrong application.
There are four things you need to know about charcoal:
    1. Charcoal purifies water more the longer its in the water. So, simply pouring water through a charcoal filter is not actually very effective. It may look and taste better, but safer it is not.
    2. You don't need very much charcoal to purify water. One stick of activated charcoal can purify thousands of gallons of water and last for up to 3 months. Using it in powdered form it doesn't last nearly as long.
    3. There's actually rather a lot that charcoal will not clean from water. A lot of what it doesn't clean can make you very sick or kill you.
    4. Regular charcoal from a campfire can be used instead of activated charcoal. However it's only 70-75% as effective as activated charcoal and absolutely must be free of wood ash. Wood ash raises the pH of water to dangerous levels. In the right (or wrong in this case) proportions they make lye which will do very nasty things to you if you drink it.
The best way to purify water using charcoal is to filter the water for debris, boil it (bringing water to a hard boil kills almost all viruses, bacteria, and parasites, but leaves a lot of inorganic material), let it cool, and drop a bit of charcoal into the container and just let it sit there for 3 or 4 hours. It sounds like a pain in the ass, but it's pretty simple to have water in a constant purification cycle this way. It's easy in a camp/shelter, because all you have to do is keep boiling water and adding it to a separate water container with the activated charcoal. If you're out hiking or hunting though, having a small piece of charcoal in your canteen will have that water in a constant purification cycle. You can even top off your purification cycle with fresh water if you're willing to do a quick boil-up whenever you take a break.
The sort of water filter you're using in this video is also pretty expensive because it's just wasteful. To put this into perspective, you can purchase enough activated bamboo charcoal sticks to purify all of your drinking water for 18 months for about $15. On the smaller side, a pellet of activated charcoal, like the kind they commonly sell for fish tanks, can last 2 or 3 weeks in a canteen at a minimum before you need to replace it. Well... unless you accidentally drink it... Using a cup or screen on your canteen eliminates that problem though. You can buy 5 lbs. of activated charcoal fish tank pellets for around $15, which would probably be enough to last a person 4-5 years.
Anyway, here's a link that explains some of the science behind using activated charcoal to purify water. www.scienceabc.com/nature/activated-charcoal-purify-water.html
The ScienceABC article deals primarily with powdered charcoal, so here is a link to some information about a kind of Japanese activated charcoal known as Binchotan. The information and instructions are the same for just about every kind of stick charcoal, whether it's made of coconut shells, bamboo, or hardwood. waterfilteranswers.com/binchotan-charcoal-water-filter/
