Biggest mistake I see from my friend who just got into the hobby - He bought an Xmaxx for his first RC car and bought the Traxxas charger and four batteries. Nothing wrong with going big but he spent about 2k dollars on the Xmaxx, charger, batteries and had the hobby shop install the light light kit, Okay so he went big and ran it 3 times, he called me and said "Mike my tires have flat spots and the truck is practically brand new!" I asked him well do you keep it on the ground or do you have a stand that you put it on keeping the tires off the ground? He said he just keeps it on floor. I explained to him that the Xmaxx is a heavy truck and all hobby cars should be elevated so the tires are not touching the floor. He said okay how do I fix this? I said your best bet is to go buy a 20 dollar stand and get some nice new Proline tires (he couldn't just replace the foam the rubber was flat from sitting so long). We went to the hobby shop and I showed him which tires to get he asked can you put these on? I said yes but it is really easy, he said he didn't have any tools, that is another mistake get a nice set of tools! So he has new tires and he goes to use the truck a few weeks later and he calls me and says that 2 of his LIPO batteries will not charge... I tell him bring them over and I will hook them up to my Venom charger and see what the issue is, I get the batteries and they are dead and won't charge I asked him how he was storing the batteries he said in his garage in the truck. The other 2 4S Lipos that were not in the truck took a charge but were already puffy. I said you keep these in the truck? He said Yes, I said after you use it do you put them into storage mode, he said what is that? I said dude did you even unplug the batteries after you were done he said no as a matter of fact he never even turned off the truck. He just put it away. So he had to get new batteries and I made him get a LIPO bag, tools, and taught him how to care for the Truck, I really think people think some of these are like the kind of crap you buy at Target despite them spending thousands. I told him to subscribe to this channel and others and learn about the hobby.
So a big mistake is just buying the biggest and best and not having a clue WTF you are doing!

Your friend was obviously new to the hobby and there is nothing wrong with that. However, I am not at all surprised that he struggled with Traxxas. Traxxas is an absolutely garbage company that sells cheap overpriced dog shit products made in china. I mean their products are DESIGNED to fail ASAP so that their aftermarket parts service could make the big bucks. For 2k you could buy a race legal, well equipped, light and agile buggy that would last you a lifetime.

Personally, I've always done a lot of research on my next RC car. I check out the pros and cons and see if the cons outweigh the pros, the second thing I do is check availability of parts. After those two then I either research something else or purchase the car I've researched. I would much rather wait until winter is over than to have a car that is broken, or can't find parts for, or have to buy another because I can't keep the thing working all summer long. Yeah, a little research can be tedious, but will save your ass. My first RC was a nitro. I know mechanical very well and not that great with electronics. I knew I would have no problem keeping it running and be able to fix it. I learned a lot of electrical because of the servos and the Nihm battery used in it. I then got a Summit after I felt a little more comfortable with the electronics and how to diagnose problems. Also a lot of what made me go after the nitro I did was because I knew I wasn't going to run it in the city or on streets. I would be in the woods. Hense why my nitro was a monster truck. After my skills improved, I then started to run it in wet and muddy conditions which isn't a great idea with nitro and is why I picked a Summit as my second. Then with the various terrains I encountered and wanted to run on came different RCs. Needless to say, you say the research is a mistake as it's number 1 on your list, I personally feel like it's very far from a mistake. I can only assume you are talking a year or more on "taking to much time" my research can actually last a month or more. I can honestly say I've not made a mistake on purchases for myself. I have made a purchase error with my neices though. The RCs I got for them were too fast and too fragile. I wasn't expecting either as it was a good brand and a "trainer" RC. The two were the Latrax Teton and the Prerunner. The neices would loose focus when they wrecked and keep the throttle pinned. A lot of times burning the tiny motor out. The replacement motors were only $10 but every second run they'd do it. I should have got the Stampede, Slash, Rustler, or the Bandit for them. The Teton and Prerunner are just as fast as any of those 4 on a MUCH smaller battery but less durable than the 4. The biggest part of the mistake was that the batteries they took would only give like 5 minute run times (give or take a minute or two).

  • @georgebowen2161
    @georgebowen2161 3 года назад

My first entry into RC world was a big mistake. I got the wrong kind of truck and I got rid of it after burning the motor out and decided RC wasn't for me. Until I got my hands on a crawler, a Danchee Ridgerock. I was hooked! I don't need speed. I just needed something easier to control and maneuverable. That led to a TRX4 Sport and an SCX10 II. I got those used in a trade, so I am not sinking a lot of cash into this. I have some friends who have crawlers and we're getting together to have some fun. I am trying to learn as much as I can and make good decisions on upgrades. Thanks for a helpful video.

Investing in a good charger is vital to all RC enthusiasts. It’s not even on the radar for most newbie’s, it’s just not a very exciting topic for most of us to talk about. Take the time to fully understand your Lipo batteries and how to take care of them and how to use them properly. It will save you a bunch of money in batteries alone. It may even prevent you from burning down your house, seriously! Yes, I know that a good charger can be fairly costly, but believe me, you will quickly realize just how important a good quality charger is. Take the time to fully understand your batteries, you will be glad you did.
Thanks for another great video 👍

Great list...except for two major "problems". First, items 1 and 10 sorta-kinda contradict each other...One says to take your time, thinking about things, to make sure you pick correctly. But, the other says to not waste your time thinking too much, and pick/buy quickly.
As for the second "problem", there's something seriously important missing from the list: quality tools. Mentioned throughout the list, at least a few times, is that people will break parts, and that they should have replacement parts on-hand. However, not only is having quality tools not mentioned...but having tools, period, isn't even mentioned. If parts are going to get broken (and we all KNOW that happens), might as well have a set of quality tools (such as MIP) on-hand, ready to be used. Sure, you can spend 1/3 to 1/2 the price on some tools. However, if you go through 4-5 sets in the same period of time you'd have gone through one set of quality tools (again, MIP highly recommended), then you haven't saved any money...you've wasted money.
The point is, not buying quality tools is a BIG MISTAKE.

Robb Ryan I understand what you’re saying, but I think what he means for 10 is to do your research and don’t just jump on the first thing you see as soon as you see it. For 1 I think he means to do research, but don’t overthink your research and spend more time than necessary on it. I know I’ve spent more time on research than necessary, and after I realize it I can’t figure out why I needed to spend that much time researching.

All GREAT advice but #7 is one of the best. I have yet to look on YT and not find answers. Some are contradictory but even those help.
    I learned years ago in 1:1 cars #5. Bling don't do a thing........for performance.
#4 I also learned in 1:1 cars. I can take a lower performance car and outrun a higher performance car because I could drive better, plus I was a little more of a risk taker.
#2 is also transferable. More performance parts for a small block Chevy than a Rambler.
#1 Many of my friends in all my hobbies would wait for a sale or just a slightly better model, MAYBE and all that time I'm having a ball shooting, fishing or just generally playing with my slightly older models of whatever toy and gaining valuable experience so IF they EVER did join in, I blew them away.
I think you were very spot on👌👌👍👍👍

My newbie mistakes that I wanna share was 1. I did not buy the better performing car. It might sound like you would spend more right off the bat when you start in this hobby but, you will become better fairly quickly compared to driving a difficult to drive car. If the learning curve is not that steep then the better. You will save yourself from spending more for another car because you started off with a bad one. 2. Would be buy the car that has support in terms of parts availability (more of a should do rather than a mistake).

6.) Getting a car with an exposed transmission that lacks a gear cover
7.) Getting paint that is not water-soluble
8.) Getting an obscure no-name car that lacks any aftermarket upgrades
9.) Masking off a paint job using scotch tape instead of masking tape

      Really agree with number 2.
See a lot of folks trying to do it with very limited funds. If every break is a financial strain it loses its appeal really fast.
I first got into the hobby as a kid with a paper route. My parents got really tired of driving me to the hobby shop and most of the time I was asking for money too.
It’s way more fun as a grownup with a job.

Im starting in the next weeks and I choose a Tamiya Chassis CC-02 with the Land Rover 90 body (I wanna a Camel Trophy Borneo 87 replica). I think is the best option for me. Completely beginner and I live in the mountains. Trails, some rocky areas, small streams, hills.
Also, with the kit I will buy a set of tires, the metal bearings, a waterproof servo and the HobbyWing 1080 ESC and some pinions
I also seen the carbon drive shaft, are quite expensive? Worth it?
You think my option is ok?

Have a Question got myself a 1/16 Fayee FY004a have gotten the drive train upgrades... But the stock tires are ok But like you mentioned " Tires " one of the best upgrades.
SO what do you recommend for this 6x6 in the Tire/rim department..
Cheers from Cold Alberta Canada 🇨🇦

I bought a Tamiya CR-01 for my first crawler. Since I couldn't find what I wanted I just built my own shock mounts. Made other vehicles parts fit and just created my own unique crawler. It has problems but it's mine and their isn't another one like it. So buying odd isn't always a bad thing.

Just narrow down choices to 2 and just make a decision. And buy a kit, you'll know your rig better.

    • @locorc9989
      @locorc9989 5 лет назад

1.Buy the right vehicle for your local terrain.
      2. Spend some decent money on a proven kit/brand. Yes the cheaper cars are ok but just save that extra 100 and buy something decent that can be repaired.
      3. If you are bashing ignore aluminium arms and stuff like that. They will bend an damage more important components on your rc.
      4. Maintenance. If you maintain your rc's properly they will rarely let you down when you are out and about.
Love the videos as ever rc review. I bought my Trx-4 sport because of your videos. It's my most used rc currently. I never thought of it before I bought one but the woods and hills 2km from my house are excellent for crawling. I don't have to load up the car and drive anywhere, I can just walk out my front door.
      Thanks again 😎😎😎

I grabbed the TRX chassis as my first crawler bc I wanted the features (2 speed + selectable differentials) and with a body off amain for $50~ you get it together for less than the full TRX4. I over-researched for like 2 weeks straight on forums, youtube, etc. Sport is a solid value, I just wasn't a huge fan of the body and wanted the TRX4 features. Traxxas, put out a body-less sport kit!
