As a racer, I’ll throw a few tips down here. There are many, many more that I could spend days talking about... -go ahead and find out what transponders are compatible with the track’s timing system. If you aren’t able to, your best bet is to buy a Mylaps hybrid 2wire transponder. If not that, buy a Mylaps 3wire transponder. Most tracks don’t have transponders available for the use of their racers. -TIRES!!! They can “make or break” your race. Find out what the best all around tire is for the track you plan to go to. Most racers (who aren’t “new”) have lots and lots of tires to choose from. Different tire compounds, tread patterns, different foam inserts, different wheels with certain amounts of flex... those racers will change their tires throughout the day as the track/weather changes. I won’t even get into tire sauces and other prep solutions. -make sure the track you are going to will have other racers who will be racing the same type of car/truck/buggy you are. If you’re racing in the Novice class,(which I highly suggest until you start winning in that class all the time) your RC of choice won’t matter as much, simply because you won’t get turned away due to having a car unlike anyone else’s. If you haven’t bought an rc yet, find out what class is raced the most; the largest. That way, you won’t need to buy another rc once you graduate from the novice class. -TOOLS!!! Don’t mess around with the little Allen wrenches that came with your RC kit. You will hurt yourself, your car, need I spell out all of the reasons? Nope. -while it may feel embarrassing, take a peek into the track’s trash cans a few times during the race day. Don’t rummage around too deep, because someone’s half-eaten burger and ketchup will be down there. Just look on the top. Racers will throw away tires, random wires/plugs, burnt steering servos, and other rc things you may need. The main thing to grab are tires. Racers will probably see you doing this and realize you don’t have much rc stuff yet. The nice racers will want to help and support you. The not nice racers typically have horns coming out of their head, fire coming out of their nose, and stomp around with a ninja sword. :) -don’t yell at the turn marshals. They didn’t crash your car. Yelling at marshals only makes you look bad. -even if you haven’t two pennies to scrape together, let other racers know that you’re happy to help them if they need it, if you are able to. If you have spare zip-ties and someone needs one, give one. Ask if they want another. You won’t feel as high-maintenance and needy when you need to ask them for a screw, or if they decide to give you a set of tires they won’t use anymore. Say THANK YOU. Say thank you again in a half hour. -Thank the owner of the track for holding the race that day before you leave. Keeping up with a race track is tiring business. -don’t be shy and isolate yourself from the rest of the racers. Park yourself next the the biggest, most expensive looking race trailer(if you’re racing outdoors) because chances are, they’re more than able to help you. -find out if there’s a Facebook page or something like that where all the local racers talk, where tracks post race dates, etc. Keep yourself informed. -Keep your RC in shape! Thoroughly clean it properly after every race. Completely rebuild it YOURSELF after every race, or 2-3 races. -the way your car is set up is important. Ask all the racers at the track who have your exact car if they’d mind letting you take a picture of their setup sheet for their car. Tell them you’re new and really want to learn how to properly set up your car. -I think that’s enough for one RUclips comment. As you can see, there is so much to learn that I haven’t even hinted at. When I was about 12 years old I raced slot cars at our local track. To this day I remember an adult racer screaming at me because I was working as a turn marshal and not getting his car back into the track as fast as he felt I should have. His copper braids weren't laying flat on his guide and the car kept popping up out of the slot when I put it down. As other cars crashed in the corner, I reset them and would go back and try to get his car back in the slot. He had an absolute meltdown, but it was his prep work on the car that was the problem. I think somebody talked to him because later on he apologized to me.
One other tip I'll add is that when you do flip your car and are waiting for the turn marshal to flip it back, STOP! Some drivers in this situation will pull on the throttle as a knee-jerk response, but instead put the breaks on so the wheels aren't rotating - and never, ever, ever punch it! A turn marshal is completely in the right to refuse to marshal you while your wheels are spinning, as it's a safety issue for them. When this happens to me, I'll hold my arms up in the air until the driver stops, no matter how much they're yelling (it seems to always be the bad sports who do this! Don't be one of them). Yes, you want to get back going right now, but just calm down and be reasonable. Once your car is back on the track you can then punch it. This goes doubly for 4wd and nitro classes, as there are more moving and dangerous parts.
I came from a Slot Car background and some of them could break bones on the track and the drivers would yell and I would make them stop then I started putting them back on 2 ah

The main thing I like to stress to new drivers for their first race is to concentrate on driving CLEAN laps and not trying to pass others. If a faster car comes up behind you, let them by. This is especially crucial if you are in a beginner class. If you just concentrate on driving clean laps, the rest will take care of itself almost 99% of the time. If someone comes up from behind and is a lot faster, just let them go. Usually in the next turn or two, they will have a wreck and you just go back by them - you are still rolling while they are stopped and waiting for a turn marshal. Other drivers will wreck during the race multiple times probably and in the end if you have kept your car on its wheels and rolling for the most part, you will finish in the top 3 easy. I have seen this scenario play out over and over again. New drivers will have a ton of horsepower, but wreck and break stuff repeatedly and get discouraged. I will have them just try to keep the car rolling, don't worry about going fast or passing anyone and they will see that scenario play out and their eyes will light up and I'm like..."See??" Here is another tip for beginners, especially for those with deep pockets: "YOU CANNOT BUY YOUR WAY INTO THE A-FEATURE!!" Over the 30+ years I have been racing and working on R/C cars, I can't tell you how many times we will see a new guy come in, spend a metric ton of money buying high-end equipment and components, then get mad because he is still running dead last in the race due to the lack of practice and skill driving his vehicle. If they will listen, I try to stress to them that practice, practice, practice is what gets you to the front. What really drives it home to them is someone else that is skilled will take the new guy's car and drive it in a heat or feature and WIN with it. That shows the new person that the equipment is not to blame. You need laps, laps, laps. A new driver running Ryan Maifield's equipment (for example) is still going to finish at the bottom if they cannot drive a clean (or relatively clean) 5 minutes.
I love the comment about the richest racer who spends so much with every possible aftermarket part, and zero race experience, expecting to win it all because they can buy whatever they think is the best. It’s SO true! Well said across the board really, and to top it off it’s the very same people like yourself who voluntarily offer such advice to new drivers that make R/C so much fun and a real comradeship. This is so true on my first race I was up against another 14 year old (maybe younger idk) with this massive rig and I still lapped then with a stock rustler 4x4 VXL it really show how easy it can be
Don't have deep pockets but... I fall in this noob with madly upgraded car (in very short time) category. But I practice couple times every week. And I don't blame the car or parts if my driving doesn't go well. YES that money could be invested in tires, bearings etc, I have them too more than enough. I just like good looking things too damn much 😂 + most of them will most likely be compatible to next version of ae 2wd buggy someday. Just yesterday I installed schelles ti upper screw set😅
I started with mudboss. Now, I race sprint cars. The best advice I can give as a 14 year old racer is stay consistent and don’t worry about anyone else. Race like no one else is there. And sometimes, slower is faster. Wait for someone else to mess up, and then pass them. Good luck!
Two more track tips: 1. Don't lean over the drivers stand, especially during the Mains. I understand that sometimes you cant see where exactly your car is on the track due to the number of people racing at once. But it can become a habit and the other racers will NOT be happy with you blocking their view with your head. Made that mistake before. It happens to the best of us. 2. During practice, if someone is upside down on the straight away or in the turn, and they yell out "WATCH THE TURN" or "WATCH THE STRAIGHT AWAY", slow down and keep your eyes peeled. Same thing applies to when a racer is on the track to turn his car back over(Most Indoor tracks dont have marshals on sight during practice so be aware of your surroundings).
As someone on a budget It's hard to not become jealous of the guys running either Team Assiociated, Arrma, Team Losi, etc Buggies and Short Corse trucks with 5000+ Miliamp 3, 4 or 6 cell LiPos easily ourunning my Himoto 2wd Brushed 1/10 Buggy, but When I think about it In future I could be running stuff like that (I Can't have a job for another three years) and there'll be the future new blood experiencing the same thing I do now, It's really just the circle of life playing it's course.
My very first race EVER I told myself that I was going to come in dead last so that then if I did better than I could be surprised.. But I ended up doing horrible and came in dead last and was lapped by the first 5 guys.. And it turns out that 3 of the 5 were 8 and 9 year olds that whooped me.. BUT I didn't care because I was having fun and the next time through I placed I think 7th or 6th because I practiced a bunch more.. And continued to progress little by little to where my first HUGE 3 day event I came in 4th in one class and 2nd in another only due to a DNF.. So my advice to a newbie just getting into rc and rc racing is to never let your ego drive ALWAYS let your calm side drive and never let anger control the stick because all it does is make you look stupid and have to apologize later for being a dummy..
I grew up racing sprint cars and late models. Once at the NMMA Easterns, Christopher Bell's dad told me, "To finish first, you must first finish." That always stuck with me and alot of the advice I learned back then has translated exactly to the RC world.
Man. I sure wish I watched this video before I went to my first race on Sunday. Everything you mentioned is exactly how the track operated. From the impound, to the drivers meeting, just all of it is what I saw, and I was not properly prepared. Next time, I'll be squared away.
I used to race rc10's with my pop and good buddy in the late 80's. We raced both off road and sprints. After my break. 😉 I purchased the sc5m kit a few years ago and absolutely can't wait to get back to the track. Thank you guys for the etiquette refresh.

OMG!!!! 12:32 So so so true. Let's go back to 1990 to an on road race that my local hobby shop put on at their parking lot. I had literally just traded an RC10 that I converted to a truggy for a 4wd on road car the night before. I can't remember the brand, maybe Kyosho or Yokomo. Either way, I stayed up all night trying to get it ready for the race the next day. When I arrived I was the only one of 2 in the Modified class. The other guy had like 1000 into his car and was an adult. I was only 16. His car was sooooo fast. But he crashed every round. One round he broke a part. One round his battery went flying out. Long story short. I crushed him and won a 40 dollar gift card to the RC shop. I bought sooo many pinion gears with that GC. So ya. VERY VERY TRUE!!!
I seen this video more than a few times but i have no idea why i still enjoy it whenever i want to watch it again. So here we are for the idk 5th time perhaps lost count.
Thank you, very in depth and informative. As someone who hasn’t gotten in to the more competitive aspects of R/C’ing yet, this is good foundational info that I will look back at when I do get there, but for now, I’m still enjoying the scale crawling and bashing sides of the hobby . 😁

thats a hard way to learn from but as long as you do good in the future and preppare and make a pile with all the stuff that is going to that race some day before.
If your marshalling and not flipping or going to flip a car try to stay out of the line of sight of drivers to face/land of jumps and corners so drives can see the track clearly

First thing is, we're all here for the same reason..have fun! Second get your batts charged and put what ever strap or clip in so your battery doesnt fly out. Ha seen to much of that. Go and just put your car on the track. Try to keep moving forward and plz dont stop on the middle of the straightaway... Please! Other then that dont hang/rest over the drivers stand and your good to go!
This company is so Awesome! Im a noob to this hobby and ive learned so much watching you guys videos. This is really appreciated. We have a local track and im really nervous about going. Im taking my step son and myself to get into racing but i may have purchased the wrong trucks. We just wanna go out and have fun. We live in Louisville Kentucky and i only know of one track thats in Indiana. My son has s Rustler vxl and i have a Rustler 4X4 Vxl. I dont know if thats the same class but like i said , we only wanna race for fun.
Today was the first time I practiced on the dirt track. At the beginning I was rushing and constantly flipped over. After I started focusing on clean laps, things went way better. I tried doing the jumps, but I didn't have enough skill and flipped over. Things went a lot more smoothly when I just rolled over the bumps. I'm pretty excited for the race I'm going to be participating in two days. I'm nervous about it, but i'm going to learn so much. I'm not sure how I'll be under pressure.

A shame that there aren't any races anymore in my area, I just to be an track Marshall at one of the tracks that disappeared. Always had good fun on race days. Even the one raceday where there was a heavy rain storm during lunch break. After the rain we made the track free of water. Anyways, it was always good fun
Couple of other tips .. research research research always do your home work and learn what set ups work on what tracks then compare to what others are running. Everyone's driving is different study that and learn who goes wide who is the speed demon and who crashes the most that way when you need to pass you know when & were to pass ( side note tailgate dont ram you both wreck ). If your having a bad day be nice to everyone else no one wants a grumpy guy at the track. Ask to help others and ask about track maintenance. Yeah it's not fun but not only are making it better you'll know exactly what lines are the smoothest and you'll be a good guy amongst the RD and everyone else ( even showing up and watering the track still helps tremendously) Remember to have fun make friends when in a good battle just breathe
Yes - please help with track maintenance! Whether it's on the day, or on non-race track-maintenance days. If you want to enjoy the track, it's on you to help make it enjoyable. I'm surprised that this hasn't been mentioned in any other comments... perhaps other tracks work differently to all the ones I've experienced in the past though, as I've always raced at independent club tracks and not hobbyshop-owned tracks.
@@richard-sim Almost every track around always ask for help whether there a big track that brings in 150 people or small tracks.. at the end of the day almost everyone wants to race and when it gets to be to much when people dont help out it closes and then no one wins.

I started racing this recent past summer. A old friend of mine still races(did back when we were in high school) and he helped get my feet wet in the racing scene. So I started at a outside loose dirt track(off road). There's a inside track near me too that I was told by a couple of guys to stay clear from because they are a bit snobby there. Well I wanted to keep my car on the track and when i ordered my B64 it came with clay tires so I went to the inside track and they ended up being pretty cool and helpful. At the moment I'm needing a servo but funds are the problem thanks to Christmas. lol but anyways what I'm saying is kinda like Brett said just have to go for it.

One counterpoint regarding turn marshaling and cars - if you're a driver and there's a turn marshal rerighting a car up ahead, don't just barrel straight through them if they're in your line - go around. When I was racing 1/8th scale nitro buggies, I had to marshal for the electric buggies, and I've been hit quite a few times by these cars. I eventually came up with a bit of a policy - if you hit me and wreck as a result, and there's more than one car that I need to reright, you're getting rerighted last, even if you're the closest car or you wrecked before someone else. And I'll be taking my sweet time if you yell at me or rev while I'm trying to reright your car. Similarly, I go out of my way to be respectful to the marshals - they're probably not happy to be standing out there having dirt flung at them by a bunch of toy cars.
I miss RC racing. Out here on the east coast, almost all the tracks shut down. I don't think we have any options that wouldn't be a 2 hour drive at this point. It really sucks.
Only 2 tips you need are as follows. 1. Go fast 2. Dont crash. Nearly the same in full scale racing go fast dont die. Its painted on the tanks of my 02 suzaky tl1000r AKA the 1 liter duke eater.

One tip I have for new racers is DO NOT LAND UNDER POWER. I’ve blown out plenty of diffs and spur gears to know not to do that. Also newcomers with a short course truck, let off the throttle when in the air. You land so much smoother and aren’t a danger to other drivers 😂
I'm gonna have my wife help me put my car on track like at start I'm getting back into hobby after 15 years she makes me do dishes and work where I can't race all day everyday lol
This is a really great, informative video. I definitely could have used a lot of this advice when I was a kid in the early 90s, with my JRX-Pro and RC10LSS.
@@AMain_Hobbies I still do, though they aren't running. Also, in the last year or so I have acquired seven other cars from the same era, making a total of four buggies and five pan cars. I'd like to get them all running but sometimes life has a tendency of getting in the way of hobbies.
Corner Marshall Tip - DON'T grab the car by, or near, the tires - You never know when the driver's going to flinch or his radio might glitch and hammer the throttle on ya...
If you go to a track and don't have enough batteries to run all your races then I would say stay home. I don't even race but just do some bashing and could fix any one of my cars with almost any issue, and take 10 batteries with me bashing. Have more power than that but that's plenty for damn near all day fun....but your right so many people go unprepared, no matter what hobby it is. But thanks for the pointers just reminds me to be even more prepared when going. bashing.
There probably more around you then you think, it's just a very quite group, I've lived in my town for 13 years and I only found out there's a track less then 3/4 mile away from my house. Google is your best friend when trying to find a track, and once you find one you learn of all th others around you.
It’s been 30 years since I have raced thinking about trying it again I have property that I can set up a practice track and remember how to do it all over again

Also, people make fun of me for liking the RC hobby. you give me the hope to keep going! Slow is faster. Watch Mayfield, Tebow ect race. You will noticed they checking up if they see what they are doing is costing them more time. I also suggest a pair of head phones and a tablet to watch something and to keep your eyes on the races if the track has a liverc account.

It’s just like Formula One, NASCAR, GT, LeMans, etc. to master any race track, you gotta study the track. Take slow laps first. Once you get used to it, go a little faster
No, not with the rally cars typically. There are rally race events, but the race is one car at a time, driving through a timed course. Drivers usually follow behind the car as they navigate the course, rather than using a central drivers stand. I have not seen rally racing in person, only on video here on RUclips. It's impressive though. -Brett
Slow and steady is so true. Im not a fast guy at all but i have Podiumed alot by driving slower steady and staying out of the wrecks where there are guys faster then me hauling butt and wrecking and thenni drive on by lol. Its the tortoise and the hair syndrome lol

To bad we had 6 race tracks around 2008 now all are closed because not enough drivers anymore. A club next to my town went from 64 members 2008 to only 3 in 2019....so sad.
Welcome back! Those RC10 buggies are something special. Do you still have your RC10? For your re-entry into racing, I think an electric vehicle will give you the extra breath to take it all in, focus on the racing and get your car dialed in (and driver dialed in). Nitro is great fun, but might best serve you as a secondary class. But, you'll really need to get an idea of the classes offered at your local tracks. Hello, ex racer here from sweden. During my active years, my local club had a open track day per week were anybody could come by and to drive and get help and tips, it was a realy fun thing to do. How ever, i have seen more experienced drivers, not all off course, behave in a dicrespectful way to beginners. That kind of guy that know it all, thinks he is always right, that tells a novice what to buy and very specificly what brands no regards to cost becuse everthing else is crap in his mind. This person has were good knowledge about racing, set ups and so on, when he is with other experienced drivers and is not a bad person in any way. Have you meet or seen this kind of person were you live, it would be interesting to find out if this personality exist elswere, i have seen this kind of person make beginners quit the hobby in the past.
Never EVER put your car in the racing line when your staging or self marshaling. I learned the hard way and had a turnbuckle broken when my car was rear ended while I made my way to the driver's stand
The hardest part for beginners is, so many tracks and LHS have gone away leaving them with few choices. Otherwise, great video and advice! If my local tracks were still around, AMain would be taking so much of my money. This goes for ALL tracks, on road, but mostly off road. Sad.

You won’t feel as high-maintenance and needy when you need to ask them for a screw, or if they decide to give you a set of tires they won’t use anymore. Say THANK YOU. Say thank you again in a half hour.
-Thank the owner of the track for holding the race that day before you leave. Keeping up with a race track is tiring business.
-don’t be shy and isolate yourself from the rest of the racers. Park yourself next the the biggest, most expensive looking race trailer(if you’re racing outdoors) because chances are, they’re more than able to help you.
-find out if there’s a Facebook page or something like that where all the local racers talk, where tracks post race dates, etc. Keep yourself informed.
-Keep your RC in shape! Thoroughly clean it properly after every race. Completely rebuild it YOURSELF after every race, or 2-3 races.
-the way your car is set up is important. Ask all the racers at the track who have your exact car if they’d mind letting you take a picture of their setup sheet for their car. Tell them you’re new and really want to learn how to properly set up your car.

When I was about 12 years old I raced slot cars at our local track. To this day I remember an adult racer screaming at me because I was working as a turn marshal and not getting his car back into the track as fast as he felt I should have. His copper braids weren't laying flat on his guide and the car kept popping up out of the slot when I put it down. As other cars crashed in the corner, I reset them and would go back and try to get his car back in the slot. He had an absolute meltdown, but it was his prep work on the car that was the problem. I think somebody talked to him because later on he apologized to me.
The one thing I tell newcomers to the hobby (especially young kids) "Every experienced driver you see was a newb at one point....."

One other tip I'll add is that when you do flip your car and are waiting for the turn marshal to flip it back, STOP! Some drivers in this situation will pull on the throttle as a knee-jerk response, but instead put the breaks on so the wheels aren't rotating - and never, ever, ever punch it! A turn marshal is completely in the right to refuse to marshal you while your wheels are spinning, as it's a safety issue for them. When this happens to me, I'll hold my arms up in the air until the driver stops, no matter how much they're yelling (it seems to always be the bad sports who do this! Don't be one of them). Yes, you want to get back going right now, but just calm down and be reasonable. Once your car is back on the track you can then punch it. This goes doubly for 4wd and nitro classes, as there are more moving and dangerous parts.

I like racing others. I like challengers. Sometimes I did so well I'm suprise how much better I got
this applies to Golf the same...when you try to beat others, you make mistakes. When you focus on your movements, are patient, you'll do better.
The main thing I like to stress to new drivers for their first race is to concentrate on driving CLEAN laps and not trying to pass others. If a faster car comes up behind you, let them by. This is especially crucial if you are in a beginner class.
If you just concentrate on driving clean laps, the rest will take care of itself almost 99% of the time. If someone comes up from behind and is a lot faster, just let them go. Usually in the next turn or two, they will have a wreck and you just go back by them - you are still rolling while they are stopped and waiting for a turn marshal.
Other drivers will wreck during the race multiple times probably and in the end if you have kept your car on its wheels and rolling for the most part, you will finish in the top 3 easy. I have seen this scenario play out over and over again. New drivers will have a ton of horsepower, but wreck and break stuff repeatedly and get discouraged. I will have them just try to keep the car rolling, don't worry about going fast or passing anyone and they will see that scenario play out and their eyes will light up and I'm like..."See??"
Here is another tip for beginners, especially for those with deep pockets: "YOU CANNOT BUY YOUR WAY INTO THE A-FEATURE!!"
Over the 30+ years I have been racing and working on R/C cars, I can't tell you how many times we will see a new guy come in, spend a metric ton of money buying high-end equipment and components, then get mad because he is still running dead last in the race due to the lack of practice and skill driving his vehicle.
If they will listen, I try to stress to them that practice, practice, practice is what gets you to the front. What really drives it home to them is someone else that is skilled will take the new guy's car and drive it in a heat or feature and WIN with it. That shows the new person that the equipment is not to blame. You need laps, laps, laps.
A new driver running Ryan Maifield's equipment (for example) is still going to finish at the bottom if they cannot drive a clean (or relatively clean) 5 minutes.
I love the comment about the richest racer who spends so much with every possible aftermarket part, and zero race experience, expecting to win it all because they can buy whatever they think is the best. It’s SO true! Well said across the board really, and to top it off it’s the very same people like yourself who voluntarily offer such advice to new drivers that make R/C so much fun and a real comradeship. So well said!
This is so true on my first race I was up against another 14 year old (maybe younger idk) with this massive rig and I still lapped then with a stock rustler 4x4 VXL it really show how easy it can be
Don't have deep pockets but... I fall in this noob with madly upgraded car (in very short time) category. But I practice couple times every week. And I don't blame the car or parts if my driving doesn't go well. YES that money could be invested in tires, bearings etc, I have them too more than enough. I just like good looking things too damn much 😂 + most of them will most likely be compatible to next version of ae 2wd buggy someday. Just yesterday I installed schelles ti upper screw set😅
Slow is smooth, and smooth is Fast
I started with mudboss. Now, I race sprint cars. The best advice I can give as a 14 year old racer is stay consistent and don’t worry about anyone else. Race like no one else is there. And sometimes, slower is faster. Wait for someone else to mess up, and then pass them. Good luck!
Two more track tips:
1. Don't lean over the drivers stand, especially during the Mains. I understand that sometimes you cant see where exactly your car is on the track due to the number of people racing at once. But it can become a habit and the other racers will NOT be happy with you blocking their view with your head. Made that mistake before. It happens to the best of us.
2. During practice, if someone is upside down on the straight away or in the turn, and they yell out "WATCH THE TURN" or "WATCH THE STRAIGHT AWAY", slow down and keep your eyes peeled. Same thing applies to when a racer is on the track to turn his car back over(Most Indoor tracks dont have marshals on sight during practice so be aware of your surroundings).

As someone on a budget It's hard to not become jealous of the guys running either Team Assiociated, Arrma, Team Losi, etc Buggies and Short Corse trucks with 5000+ Miliamp 3, 4 or 6 cell LiPos easily ourunning my Himoto 2wd Brushed 1/10 Buggy, but When I think about it In future I could be running stuff like that (I Can't have a job for another three years) and there'll be the future new blood experiencing the same thing I do now, It's really just the circle of life playing it's course.

My very first race EVER I told myself that I was going to come in dead last so that then if I did better than I could be surprised.. But I ended up doing horrible and came in dead last and was lapped by the first 5 guys.. And it turns out that 3 of the 5 were 8 and 9 year olds that whooped me.. BUT I didn't care because I was having fun and the next time through I placed I think 7th or 6th because I practiced a bunch more.. And continued to progress little by little to where my first HUGE 3 day event I came in 4th in one class and 2nd in another only due to a DNF..
So my advice to a newbie just getting into rc and rc racing is to never let your ego drive ALWAYS let your calm side drive and never let anger control the stick because all it does is make you look stupid and have to apologize later for being a dummy..
I grew up racing sprint cars and late models. Once at the NMMA Easterns, Christopher Bell's dad told me, "To finish first, you must first finish." That always stuck with me and alot of the advice I learned back then has translated exactly to the RC world.
Man. I sure wish I watched this video before I went to my first race on Sunday. Everything you mentioned is exactly how the track operated. From the impound, to the drivers meeting, just all of it is what I saw, and I was not properly prepared. Next time, I'll be squared away.
I used to race rc10's with my pop and good buddy in the late 80's. We raced both off road and sprints. After my break. 😉 I purchased the sc5m kit a few years ago and absolutely can't wait to get back to the track. Thank you guys for the etiquette refresh.

OMG!!!! 12:32 So so so true. Let's go back to 1990 to an on road race that my local hobby shop put on at their parking lot. I had literally just traded an RC10 that I converted to a truggy for a 4wd on road car the night before. I can't remember the brand, maybe Kyosho or Yokomo. Either way, I stayed up all night trying to get it ready for the race the next day. When I arrived I was the only one of 2 in the Modified class. The other guy had like 1000 into his car and was an adult. I was only 16. His car was sooooo fast. But he crashed every round. One round he broke a part. One round his battery went flying out. Long story short. I crushed him and won a 40 dollar gift card to the RC shop. I bought sooo many pinion gears with that GC. So ya. VERY VERY TRUE!!!

thats a hard way to learn from but as long as you do good in the future and preppare and make a pile with all the stuff that is going to that race some day before.
If your marshalling and not flipping or going to flip a car try to stay out of the line of sight of drivers to face/land of jumps and corners so drives can see the track clearly

Go and just put your car on the track. Try to keep moving forward and plz dont stop on the middle of the straightaway... Please! Other then that dont hang/rest over the drivers stand and your good to go!
This company is so Awesome! Im a noob to this hobby and ive learned so much watching you guys videos. This is really appreciated. We have a local track and im really nervous about going. Im taking my step son and myself to get into racing but i may have purchased the wrong trucks. We just wanna go out and have fun. We live in Louisville Kentucky and i only know of one track thats in Indiana. My son has s Rustler vxl and i have a Rustler 4X4 Vxl. I dont know if thats the same class but like i said , we only wanna race for fun.
Those sound like good cars, but I am not sure if they are in the same class.
Today was the first time I practiced on the dirt track. At the beginning I was rushing and constantly flipped over. After I started focusing on clean laps, things went way better.
I tried doing the jumps, but I didn't have enough skill and flipped over. Things went a lot more smoothly when I just rolled over the bumps.
I'm pretty excited for the race I'm going to be participating in two days. I'm nervous about it, but i'm going to learn so much. I'm not sure how I'll be under pressure.

A shame that there aren't any races anymore in my area, I just to be an track Marshall at one of the tracks that disappeared. Always had good fun on race days. Even the one raceday where there was a heavy rain storm during lunch break. After the rain we made the track free of water. Anyways, it was always good fun
Make your own track
Couple of other tips .. research research research always do your home work and learn what set ups work on what tracks then compare to what others are running. Everyone's driving is different study that and learn who goes wide who is the speed demon and who crashes the most that way when you need to pass you know when & were to pass ( side note tailgate dont ram you both wreck ).
If your having a bad day be nice to everyone else no one wants a grumpy guy at the track.
Ask to help others and ask about track maintenance. Yeah it's not fun but not only are making it better you'll know exactly what lines are the smoothest and you'll be a good guy amongst the RD and everyone else ( even showing up and watering the track still helps tremendously)
Remember to have fun make friends when in a good battle just breathe
Yes - please help with track maintenance! Whether it's on the day, or on non-race track-maintenance days. If you want to enjoy the track, it's on you to help make it enjoyable. I'm surprised that this hasn't been mentioned in any other comments... perhaps other tracks work differently to all the ones I've experienced in the past though, as I've always raced at independent club tracks and not hobbyshop-owned tracks.
@@richard-sim Almost every track around always ask for help whether there a big track that brings in 150 people or small tracks.. at the end of the day almost everyone wants to race and when it gets to be to much when people dont help out it closes and then no one wins.

I started racing this recent past summer. A old friend of mine still races(did back when we were in high school) and he helped get my feet wet in the racing scene. So I started at a outside loose dirt track(off road). There's a inside track near me too that I was told by a couple of guys to stay clear from because they are a bit snobby there. Well I wanted to keep my car on the track and when i ordered my B64 it came with clay tires so I went to the inside track and they ended up being pretty cool and helpful. At the moment I'm needing a servo but funds are the problem thanks to Christmas. lol but anyways what I'm saying is kinda like Brett said just have to go for it.

One counterpoint regarding turn marshaling and cars - if you're a driver and there's a turn marshal rerighting a car up ahead, don't just barrel straight through them if they're in your line - go around. When I was racing 1/8th scale nitro buggies, I had to marshal for the electric buggies, and I've been hit quite a few times by these cars. I eventually came up with a bit of a policy - if you hit me and wreck as a result, and there's more than one car that I need to reright, you're getting rerighted last, even if you're the closest car or you wrecked before someone else. And I'll be taking my sweet time if you yell at me or rev while I'm trying to reright your car. Similarly, I go out of my way to be respectful to the marshals - they're probably not happy to be standing out there having dirt flung at them by a bunch of toy cars.

I miss RC racing. Out here on the east coast, almost all the tracks shut down. I don't think we have any options that wouldn't be a 2 hour drive at this point. It really sucks.
Only 2 tips you need are as follows. 1. Go fast 2. Dont crash.

One tip I have for new racers is DO NOT LAND UNDER POWER. I’ve blown out plenty of diffs and spur gears to know not to do that. Also newcomers with a short course truck, let off the throttle when in the air. You land so much smoother and aren’t a danger to other drivers 😂

@@AMain_Hobbies I still do, though they aren't running. Also, in the last year or so I have acquired seven other cars from the same era, making a total of four buggies and five pan cars. I'd like to get them all running but sometimes life has a tendency of getting in the way of hobbies.
Corner Marshall Tip - DON'T grab the car by, or near, the tires - You never know when the driver's going to flinch or his radio might glitch and hammer the throttle on ya...
If you go to a track and don't have enough batteries to run all your races then I would say stay home. I don't even race but just do some bashing and could fix any one of my cars with almost any issue, and take 10 batteries with me bashing. Have more power than that but that's plenty for damn near all day fun....but your right so many people go unprepared, no matter what hobby it is. But thanks for the pointers just reminds me to be even more prepared when going. bashing.

There probably more around you then you think, it's just a very quite group, I've lived in my town for 13 years and I only found out there's a track less then 3/4 mile away from my house. Google is your best friend when trying to find a track, and once you find one you learn of all th others around you.

Slow is faster. Watch Mayfield, Tebow ect race. You will noticed they checking up if they see what they are doing is costing them more time. I also suggest a pair of head phones and a tablet to watch something and to keep your eyes on the races if the track has a liverc account.

are there often classes for the 1/10 scale rally cars? i usually only see the trophy trucks & buggies, but i also dont go to many events
No, not with the rally cars typically. There are rally race events, but the race is one car at a time, driving through a timed course. Drivers usually follow behind the car as they navigate the course, rather than using a central drivers stand. I have not seen rally racing in person, only on video here on RUclips. It's impressive though.

Shame I'm just now getting into this in my early 40s, far too late lol. When I was a kid the cost to race an RC car was, let's just say, prohibitive.
To bad we had 6 race tracks around 2008 now all are closed because not enough drivers anymore. A club next to my town went from 64 members 2008 to only 3 in 2019....so sad.
Really? Any idea what the reason is for the sudden drop in members?

Hello, I have a question: How do you get sponsored ? AND ALSO I am new to racing
Coming out of RC10 first gen retirement since 1989! But want to start 1/10th scale touring. Should I do electric or nitro? Live in OC California.
Welcome back! Those RC10 buggies are something special. Do you still have your RC10?
For your re-entry into racing, I think an electric vehicle will give you the extra breath to take it all in, focus on the racing and get your car dialed in (and driver dialed in). Nitro is great fun, but might best serve you as a secondary class. But, you'll really need to get an idea of the classes offered at your local tracks. If they only race nitro, then that's the way to start if you want to race. Hope this helps man! Have fun on your racing journey, and I wish you good luck Bryon. Hello, ex racer here from sweden. During my active years, my local club had a open track day per week were anybody could come by and to drive and get help and tips, it was a realy fun thing to do. How ever, i have seen more experienced drivers, not all off course, behave in a dicrespectful way to beginners. That kind of guy that know it all, thinks he is always right, that tells a novice what to buy and very specificly what brands no regards to cost becuse everthing else is crap in his mind. This person has were good knowledge about racing, set ups and so on, when he is with other experienced drivers and is not a bad person in any way. Have you meet or seen this kind of person were you live, it would be interesting to find out if this personality exist elswere, i have seen this kind of person make beginners quit the hobby in the past.

Never EVER put your car in the racing line when your staging or self marshaling. I learned the hard way and had a turnbuckle broken when my car was rear ended while I made my way to the driver's stand
The hardest part for beginners is, so many tracks and LHS have gone away leaving them with few choices. Otherwise, great video and advice! If my local tracks were still around, AMain would be taking so much of my money. This goes for ALL tracks, on road, but mostly off road. Sad.
I used to race RC cars 15yrs ago had a Duramax nitro buggy, losi800 MT couple rustlers but when I get my taxes I'm gonna get back into it what's a good 1/10th or 1/8th scale awd buggy or carpet racers?? Thanks or even a truggy like a rustler style truck
