This goes beyond explaining the Marauders fandom. It explains the entire phenomenon of modern fandom and fanfiction in the most succinct way possible. I'm impressed.
The fact that Remus married Tonks , a shapeshifter who’s hair changes color depending on her mood, is a very bi thing to do after your former lover dies.
dude i finished atyd this morning and when i tell you i sobbed for the last 30 chapters straight. the marauders fandom is honestly beautiful and somehow agrees on every interpretation of the characters--or at least has an open enough mind to accept it. it's something so rare and fascinating: thank you for making a video about it!
Understandable (for crying) honnestly, atyd is really the beginning of the fandom and I fricking love it like URGH I'm currently reading atyd but sirius's pov it's amazing, the gay panics are hilarious and constant LMAO
I always had this headcanon that Remus was hard of hearing and had chronic pain due to the attack that made him a werewolf. The Marauders and Mcgonagall(because she is the legit best) learn BSL so conversations can be more understood. Even though Rowling prides herself in having a diverse cast there is absolutely zero Deaf characters, which is sad because she had a few clear opportunities but didn't take them. Deaf characters are rare in American media let alone in the UK, so I know it would've meant a lot to have a character like that in the canon.
any kind of audible or vocal disability basically makes you useless as a wizard or witch, as you need to cast magic via incantation at least while learning you can eventually cast non verbal spells but these are weaker and much harder to cast
@@garyvincent7397 I didn't say he was Deaf. I said he was Hard of Hearing. I've met many HoH people who don't have Deaf accents(meaning they speak clearly) so the headcanon still works. I understand your perspective on the Deaf character. The way Rowling made it makes it very difficult to exist as a disabled wizard which is why I love the Marauders. The Marauders era leaves so much room for creative headcanoning that tends to be better than the actual canon. The idea of the European concept of verbal spells with a wand being the superior to all other forms is kind of (whether intentional or not) racist and I'm not the type to use that word loosely.
I mean just coz you can't hear doesn't mean you can't speak also, this applies with accents too which is kinda dumb like if your a wizard with an Irish accent, good luck casting anything without an explosion. That just seems like a miscalculation on Rowling's part dontcha think?
@@Sammy200655294 You misunderstood. JK Rowling insinuates and many times outright states that the European concept of wizards using sticks to cast verbal spells is superior to all other forms. I choose to believe that she didn't mean anything by this, but the decision itself is racist(Again. I don't use that word lightly). @Gary Vincent was right in saying that my hopes for a fully Deaf non-verbal character is unrealistic given the canon lore and if my character was ever created they would be one of the weakest characters there ever were because of the limiting rules that Rowling put in place. Rowling is really good at writing when it comes to straight able bodied European characters, but it seems everytime she tries to "world build" or "diversify" and go outside of what she's good at without any outside help she just ends up digging herself into a ditch.
Oh wow, I had absolutely no idea that the Marauders/Wolfstar fandom had had a recent resurgence! That explains why an old Remus/Sirius ficlet of mine from 2014 suddenly started getting weekly activity on AO3 a couple years ago. I've been absolutely baffled. It makes me so happy to know that folks are enjoying this ship again. R/S was always just the coziest ship for me, due in large part to the R/S fic exchanges that used to be held on LiveJournal around the holidays every year. Such a great corner of fandom. It's so awesome to see a new generation's take on the sandbox.
I usually don't comment on videos, BUT WHY ISN'T THIS VIDEO MORE POPULAR?????? It's well written, the voice is calming, and it gives plenty of info. You have earned my like, dear Madame
Because it’s adding queer crap to anything. It make a people uncomfortable Like come on some of her script is wacked “The internet- led by tumblr of course” “reigned by the straight cis male” “I know i know , let’s get into it “ *continues by obscure “gen z” tiktoks doing half gross stuff* “This fanfic changed lives” It’s all very written for the few people that have already watched this video. To the rest, if some lost stranger hops on its just freaky.
@@ntbored7727 were you saying it wasn't popular because it "adds queer crap to everything"? I really think it's because I posted it last week. I hate to break it to you, but even the things I discuss in the video are immensely popular. Sure, it's for a small corner of the Internet, but I think that includes more people than you think.
As a person who was heavily involved in marauders fandom on Tumblr in 2014-2017, as both a fanartist and fanfic writer, we did in fact have diversity in our headcanons back then. I don't say this to discredit the transformative work done more recently which has popularised it even further, just to give context that it already existed on a smaller scale. I myself drew lily as plus sized, Dorcas meadows as East Asian, James potter as desi. I wrote dorcas/Marlene into my fanfic in 2016 and despite it being jilycentric endgame, included a short romance between lily and another female student. I even spoke about it on the alohomora podcast in 2017, far before ATYD regenerated the fandom. I wasn't alone in doing these things, I was heavily influenced by others on ao3 and Tumblr at the time. All fandom is built upon its elders, so don't forget them
that's awesome! I based this video around my experience in the fandom starting in 2020, so I'm sure I missed examples predating me like you've described. It makes me so happy that diversity in this fandom always existed in one form or another. The reason I put so much emphasis on these last few years is mostly because of the fandom's presence on tiktok, which (I believe) propelled it more into the mainstream. But yes, this is all built on the fandom elders!! Thank you for sharing :)
This is great but 2014-2017 is not "the elders". The elder HP fandom is from the 00s when the books were still coming out. I wish we had had all those things back then. Your generation brought the change and I am thankful, but let's not erase what the actual "elder days" were like.
I was into marauders since the dawn of the internet, and wolfstar, dark-skinned James, and various lesbian ships between the members of the order of the Phoenix were always a thing. My personal fic from like 2010 has Dorcas/Emmeline instead, and Dorcas is dark-skinned, and I, too, didn't come up with all this myself.
I agree with your statement! I’ve been in the Marauders fandom since 2011, and although I’ve never stopped loving them, the feelings came back to me with a different kind of affection when atyd became more popular recently. From what I remember of 10 years ago, a lot of Marauders fanfics and art were still more diverse than the HP Hogwarts era ones, for example.
This is one of the only "fandoms" i actively consume content from, it brings me so much comfort and I am one of the people that don't associate with it 'Harry Potter', even when taking part in the main story line.
As someone who had been in the marauders fandom since 2018, ATYD definitely broke the small world that the subfandom was before. I've never been happier to have a busrt of new flavour and fanfics!
What’s really interesting too, is that the fandom as a colloquial whole portray these characters and their personalities in almost the exact same way. Which is impressive, when looking at the fact that most of the characters were mentioned once or twice in canon
love this! completely depicts the lovely aspect of the fandom, representation is clearly one of the best parts.i also love the head canon that remus suffers from chronic pain because of his lycanthropy, it's just another way this fandom represents different communities
I remember finding “All the young dudes” while digging through Marauders fanfics to kill time. I didn’t realize it’s significance at the time, and this was in summer/late spring 2022
Thank you to the RUclips algorithm for actually recommending me some good content! Edit: I honestly love when this kind of stuff happens. When a small group of people take one idea, one slither of text, and run with it to create something of there own. I honestly find these kinds of mini Fandoms built on a few popular fics, fan casts, memes, and edits to be some of the most fun and creative places! It's nice to have a corner of the Harry Potter community that is all ours and hasn't been trained but ol' JKs hands. (Also this video is great! Your voice is so clear and calming!~)
@@BrynnBeverly I read all of my immortal (and the spin offs mentioned on the wiki) when others were writing about disco wizards my wizards were Emo sexpots.
In the English fandom there is “all the young dude” but in the Hispanic fandom we have the wonderful fanfic of “marauder crack”. This is a legendary fanfic in the Hispanic fandom of Harry Potter and the fandom of the marauders, since although it was written in 2004 this fanfic has been in the heads of fans ever since to the point that the author republished it in 2021 with new scenes and I started to publish a 2nd part. If there is someone Spanish or English speaking who wants to put the translator in AO3. I highly recommend this fanfic because it is absolutely wonderful and super hot❤️🔥❤️🔥❤️🔥❤️🔥
You are right Marauder crack is the best thing i have read in my life i also recomend it so hard. Can you tell me were i can read the 2nd part that you are writing ?
The marauders fandom is a truly special thing. The way people picked up bits from a series with nearly no diversity of any kind and made this wonderful fandom is quite magical. And the fact that there are many people in the fandom who haven't even read the hp series. I know people (including myself) who saw themselves in this fandom for the first time. Such as I've never seen any real books with omnisexual characters but I've read multiple fanfics where Sirius is omni. You did a great job of summing this all up.
Honestly that's the beauty of this Fandom. It is like a white canvas where we lay all the representation we always wanted to see. Where we can project ourselves and our lives. Where we can dig into and forget about the real world. I think Canon doesn't actually matter anymore because we create our own. And each fan make it different.
The Shoebox Project is still my favourite fanfic of all time. It’s so great to see a video essay about my favourite corner of the internet that I haven’t interacted with for a while. I haven’t read All The Young Dudes and didn’t even know about the resurgence! Guess that makes me one of the oldies lmao
As someone who was in the Marauders fandom for years, who loved the fandom so much, who has seen it be the place of diversifying (be it race, sexuality or body shape wise) and flashing out the characters for /years/ (this didn't start recently, it was happening for years!), who enjoyed the ATYD era so much because of the renaissance - I am SO UPSET by what has become of the fandom over the last year and how it changed :/ It's hard to even articulate how impossible it has become to be a part of it. There is such a dark side of it that no one talks about. For a fandom that's priding itself in being accepting, it is INCREDIBLY narrow-minded and unwelcome to anything but their single, rigid and not even canon versions (i.e. you aren't allowed to not ship Wolfstar, when in the past you could ship whoever you wanted and even have asexual characters. I personally saw Sirius as asexual.), and god forbid if you have a m/f ship EVEN IF IT'S LITERALLY THE ONLY CANON SHIP! Jily shippers of all people are getting bullied out of the fandom and are finding it impossible to be part of it anymore! The misogyny and biphobia is so rampant people are turning away from the fandom after years in it. Gay and lesbians are called homophobic and lesbophobic for liking a canon ship over a crackship. And this without even mentioning the utterly horrifying trend of romantisizing Death Eaters which are in universe *nazis*! Characters whose only canon action was torturing people to insanity or having fascist ideology! And then shipping JAMES POTTER, the guy who fought to death in a war against the wizard nazi and protected the marginalized people, who adored his wife Lily - a marginalized woman - his whole life and literally /died/ for her, THIS guy is being shipped with a Voldemort fanboy he never even looked at twice and NEVER WOULD in his life? Yhis goes against literally everything he is? I am so appalled at how we even came to this? I haven't despised a ship as much as Jegulus before! And stripping the main female character of the era of her canonical importance, using her as a surrogate mother, villainizing her, stealing her husband - all just to give it all to a suppressor supremacist boy?? I am speechless. But then again, misogyny was always the strongest ingredient of every fandom. A year ago there was a strong outpouring of pain from a big part of Jewish and POC fans who documented and voiced their pain and how they were triggered, brought to tears and panic attacks and harmed by the prevailing need of the fandom to romantisize Death Eaters, who are clearly coded as nazis, many had to leave the fandom as self-preservation and many were bullied for speaking up, but nothing has changed :/ I really miss the 2020-21 days, the ATYD era before this new problematic wave. If only the fans had chosen literally any other characters to build on except for the local genocidal bigots omg, if only they had left the main female character and her family alone, all of the great things could STILL have been built even without these two choices! But the problem is that it's not the Marauders fandom anymore, it's actually a Regulus fandom, or Timothee Chalamet fandom. At this point this is basically Snape Fandom V2, one on one, with the exact same talking points and arguments form fans, except the new "Snape" is prettier and richer. And this is so embarrassing for Marauders fans. And it's upsetting because these characters were my comfort characters and the fandom my comfort space, but now it's very toxic and unwelcome :/ edit: sorry if I'm not answering all comments, as sometimes the answer is already in my post, or subsequent posts, or they're talking about something other than what I was talking about, or the point didn't come across. For those who have been suffering too, I hear you, many hear you and are speaking up on different platforms, despite often attempts to silence them. Don't be reluctant to speak up, I and others will listen.
^^this right here!!!! the way this video is already outdated and it's only been a few months.....ik i literally mention jegulus and i really like the nuanced aspect of their hypothetical relationship being about how reg was pulled into the world of death eaters and never wanted to be one that is prevalent in a lot of fics (and implied in canon?) BUT i totally agree how people are romanticizing literal nazis and calling them shit like "babygirl" like stop pls. and your line about reg being the "prettier and richer snape" EXACTLY like if he was ugly no one would be shipping him with anyone let's be real
@@BrynnBeverly OMG thank you so much for being understanding! Tbh I was a bit scared posting this comment because I didn't know which side of the fandom I was getting into, the toxic one or the understanding one, and as you said the video is already dated now and some content, the initial responses and conversations were not encouraging for what I had to say, but it NEEDED to be said because what is happening is sad! So I'm so happy that you agree now haha, I calmed down and feel safer because I wouldn't dare voice this in many other place out of sheer fear. Also if we're moving towards building an inclusive healthy fandom for diverse characters, then let's AT LEAST move towards the right direction and NOT in the nazi direction treading on misogynystic steps? This feels like it should be a bare minimum, but sadly we have a case of one step forward, two steps back.
This video was recommended to me and I was honestly searching for a comment that was talking about the actual truth that's happening in this toxic fandom atm, wish this was more visible.
@@tinatinarmainteresebs9255 speaking nothing but truth!!!! and yes i want this to be a space where people w all different opinions can voice them - thanks for doing that!
Wolfstar was the first ship I was really into, way back in 2009-ish and I was 16, it's still one of my fave ships and one of the few I view as an OTP. Also nobody could pry bi Remus out of my cold dead hands 😁💖💜💙
I strongly believe one of the reasons for ATYD being SO popular, was its nuance on British culture specifically. Specifically British culture concerning race and sexuality. The inclusion of David Bowie, aids, and Mary having Jamaican heritage all referenced incredibly important aspects of queer and black history within the UK. Mary's parents most likely came over on a Windrush boat, which in itself gives her so much depth that I think needs to be considered more. Equally, British rock in the 70s/80s, class, and queer culture in Londo were touched on so well that it is easy to see why they were a factor in its popularity. I would love to give more examples, but I have an exam in an hour and my head is full of The History Boys quotes. But I hope this makes some sense :)
Fully agree, cobbled backalleys of terraced houses and top of the pops were my favourite nostalgia. But, like you said, it's more than that. It shows how Remus struggles with identity. While I don't appreciate the use of the G slur (Yes, it means Irish traveller, my partner's family are irish travellers and consider it a slur towards them), I understand the use of it because that's how it was. I mean, I'm from the north so a lot of people tend to be back a few decades, sometimes that's how it still is.
But anyway, if anyone is looking for a genuinely fantastic Marauders era fic with incredible characterizations, read the Last Enemy by CHDarling! It is 10 time better written than even ATYD.
I have been part of this fandom from around 2003 to 2005. After that, life got busy and I was occupied with other things. Now recently I discoverd what had been going on for the fandom in the last years. And I love it so much.
marauders were one of the first fandoms i got into and which introduced me to fanfiction in early 2010s. i had kind of forgotten about it and had no idea about this fandom renaissance going on, but now i am excited to see what its all about.
I'm not a fanfic reader. I didn't know wolfstar existed. But ever since I watched this video, the existence of ATYD has been in the back of my mind ever since. Tried to ignore it, cause its 2000 fucking pages, and I already know they ALL DIE in the end, but my fate was sealed. I'm now almost finishing the first book lol. Thanks i guess?!
as someone who was part of the fandom, it made me realise my own queerness and allowed me to make some of the best friends i have ever made so i’m so very thankful for it and how i accidentally stumbled onto a watt pad story about a certain rich gay boy who met a rather introverted boy who then fell in love.
As a millenial that still holds dear to her heart this subfandom and who's jily remains one of her otp's I gotta say, I'm super happy, and very nostalgic, that a whole generation is rediscovering them. Unwillingly (and unknowningly to myself) left this fandom when row/ling published that horrible essay, but I see so much new stuff now that, even if I don't care to participate in it anymore, I feel tremendous happiness for all of you, guys. This fandom gave me comfort, company and lived in my headspace with me for many years. I'll always love it and have absolute love for my babes (jily, I'll never not love you), but seeing them live in a new world of stories and new content is amazing. Keep enjoying it greatly, babes. Cheers
This fandom is the reason I'm still glad to love this saga. The creativity, the inclusion, the fan fictions and fan art. We're more talented than the person who created it. She didn't care at all of her story. Probably she hates it now that the fandom claimed it and is thankfully changing it. f canon. We love the world we created.
Made me realize that we literally created this out of nothing and I love this for us even though I should add that marauderstok characterization of the marauders is quite different to marauderstwt but either way its quite brilliant to see how much we’ve grown these characters
"The one who really shouldn't be named" GIRL this caught me off guard, almost spit my ginger lemon tea! It's brilliant - at the same time funny and a perfect depiction of how I felt about her since the moment she finished writing the 7th book. I'm just at the beginning of the vid, but I can already tell I'm gonna enjoy it Edit: Yup, I enjoyed it :)
The Marauders Fnadom is the reason I still love the Harry Potter world. I love reading the stories of these silly group of friends attending a magic school. I never knew the fandom was so big or that there were so many diveristy in headcannons. I stumbled upon quite a few fics that depicted James as muslim and it made me stupid happy. Its really heartwarming to see people make fanworks that include everyone, despite what the original author might have intended
Damn, thank you so much for this essay. It perfectly sums up the feelings of this fandom and its fans, I think, and it also makes clear how wonderful a fandom can be to create things from, as you said, basically nothing. And Queer Utopia is a perfect way of describing it. Because you have so much representation that is actually really well written by fans for fans, by people that want to see themselves in these stories and can better, authentically write it, it really is such an open community, I feel like. Also, of course tumblr had to be mentioned. It has to be the second/joined most important website for fans ro rant and chatter about their fandoms, and I absolutely love the Marauders fandom on there. Again, thank you! I have to agree with other comments, you made it really well!
I am CRYING. Thank you. I've been reading and creating Harry Potter fanfiction since I was 12. I am 29 now, and reviewed so many of the harmful things in the books through fanfiction, and I watched the fandom go through so. many. phases. and I LOVE the shapes it takes now. I've read a drarry longfic a few years back that stuck with me where Harry is actually part Indian through his dad's side and it brings a lot of Indian culture and it is BEAUTIFUL. Queerness, polyamori, culture, historical facts, so many topics I saw people talk shit about out of the fandom, portrayed beautifully into the stories. I know that's not only a marauder or harry potter fanfiction characteristics -- I am, in fact, in many fandoms, and I can say a lot of them are similar -- but it was my first experience with a community like that and I am happy to be part of it stil. Thank you for this video.
as a member of the "read another book" gang, the glimpses ive seen of marauders stuff from my sister and some of the fic ive read, this subfandom is an absolute dream.
fantastic job! i honestly didn't know about this because my time in the harry potter fandom was in sort of the "millenial" era but now that i know it's happening i am so happy about it!
moment of silence for the people who were in the Marauders fandom before 2020, and before ATYD became the be all end all. it's rough out there these days.
i will admit the focus on the girls is much better. however, we give ATYD too much credit there, as the fic is v limited in portrayal of them as it's influenced my the misogyny of remus' POV.
As a millennial who has heard of the marauders but never knew what it was, thank you for making this. I didn't know it was fully created by the fandom and I didn't know about that fanfic. I've been reading fics, including hp fics, for more than 15 years, so I'm both ashamed and excited. I'm DEFINITELY going to read ATYD and I already know I will fall in love with this fandom, thank you for the informative vid
I just love this fandom too much: I'm romaa and queer and the Marauders fandom is the first place in the internet where I feeled safe enough to tell people ab that
This is really one of the best video essays I've ever watched. As a long time gen z harry potter fan, I've been thinking about this cultural shift for a while. When I was little and just brushing the surface of my queerness, I found great refuge in the books. I loved this magical world I could come home to and I could safely express ny crushes on several of the female characters under the guise of just being a really passionate fan. So when JK Rowling came out with her haeful, transphobic words, I and many other queer/trans kids who had grown up with Harry Potter as their refuge and escape, were hurt and devestated. That could have been the death of it. That could have been the end of that deep love for Harry Potter we all had. But it was not. In fact, it was a birth, a birth of something beautiful, The Marauders. We did read between the lines and from it we created queer joy, queer beauty, queer freedom. We wrote beautiful fanfics, created stunning fanart, creators on tiktok edited incredible short films out of fancasts and fan actors. When the queer space we had found in HP was threatened, we created our own. How beautiful is that? It sort of sounds silly but that IS resilience. So yes, thank you HP fans, thank you for the home of my youth that was not destroyed. It means everything.
holy shit holy shit holy shit AHHHHHH this puts SOOO much depth to it ... yk that feeling thats like happy and giddy and excited and kicking feet and screaming.. well that was me for the past 10 minutes and 24 seconds. bye, i'm going to go cry now :)
I still think Marauders is the best fandom. One of the things that make it the best is that each one of us has some personal touch to characters and that make them more connected to us. We all have this overall idea about a character but the small things we think or add to the characters make them special to us. This fandom is like no other I am a part of and I feel so happy and effertless to be part of this fandom. Really it feels like I know all the characters like I've lived with them. And no other fandom has done it for me.
I am at work, completely sobbing because of this video... There isn't anything sad about it but the marauders mean so much to many people (me included) and i love the community we have build so much
That’d be nice too, but then the Marauders fandom would be throwing a fit because their fanon version of the Marauders and those related isn’t portrayed.
I appreciate the work you put into this. For about a year out of nowhere fan art from this fandom has been creeping into my TikTok fyp and I never really knew what it was about. Eventually it kept showing up so much that I had to look deeper into it and you explained it all for me. I never imagined I would want to read a fan fic until now.
This video explains it wonderfully!! We saw our chance to take a story that excludes rep and ran faster than James can fly a broom. It brought a new element of acceptance and a place of belonging into the wizarding world.
A lot of millennials prefer the marauders era as well. The lack of cannon content on the characters and era in general leaves a lot of room for fleshing out characterization and storylines that we were denied in the mainstream Harry Potter era. Queer representation was something that we really needed growing up but were only given sparingly and sometimes only as a joke. Being able to take an aspect of a fandom we enjoyed as kids and curate it as our own is a huge appeal.
OMG THIS VID >>>>>>> literally stole my thoughts out of my brain isn't is so just absolutely amazing that we (essentially) collectively created these characters from barely anything?? and now they're household names and their quirks and personalities continue to be forever explored- there's always some tiny little headcannon that someone dreams up that adds to the whole marauders narrative AND IT'S SO GOOD TOO hoping commenting boosts ur reach I usually don't lmao :DD
the things you mentioned about poc and plus size fan art and fan casts have been around at least since i entered the fandom in 2015 and i think much longer too. emmeline was no name drop she survived the first war and rejoined the order and helped harry on a mission after which she died but she was mentioned quite a lot and even had a few lines i think, her death came as a big shock to the order. and i love that atyd made the marauders more mainstream, i actually had no idea it was THAT popular, but it also has some really problematic elements sadly (mainly misogyny and anti-roma racism including horrific stereotyping and usage of the g slur)
@@Mialikesthings obviously but i dont see the connection with bowie and regardless it has nothing to do with my claims, the writing itself is problematic. the author made the evil werewolves of roma descent and used racist language to describe them (not just characters talking about them like this but in the narration itself mainly) and treated the female characters in a misogynistic way, using them pretty much only for the character development of the boys. this was the worst with mary, who was also the only black girl in the fic (even though dorcas is canonically black, that wasn't the case in the fic) she was just used as a plot device for remus and sirius and also horribly objectified. i have no issue with topics like misogyny, racism, homophobia etc being portrayed in a realistic period-typical way if it's done with the right commentary/the story makes it clear that these things are bad. but in this fanfic it was often clearly the author's own prejudices showing
@@leaf111 I’m guessing you know nil to nothing about the UK because Bowie was and is still considered a god til this day there, also as a black girl I find it weird how people are complaining about Mary specifically and not Lilly just as she is black while I’m not the happiest about Mary it would make more sense of her to be a side character rather than a supposedly ‘main character’. I do agree with the misogyny thing but that was not the thing I was talking about rather it was the use of the g-slur.
i think i've come across at least 3 different marauders web series being made, I'm so happy for the renaissanceand recreation of this fandom in a more diverse way, like when you can say there is fanfic of your fanfic, you've done it
The marauders fandom 🤝 the fnaf fandom Taking literal blank slates of characters and running up the mile with it and creating a way diverse and queer cast of characters than their creators (both bigots) would ever fear they could be. 70s queer wizards and 80s queer freddy fazbear pizzeria employees unite!

I have only been in the Marauders fandom for almost a year now and I can relate to it so much, like a little safe space. Thanks for creating this video it brightened my day!! :3
On board since 2005… Stopped around 2009 to read and write ffs (mostly Moonstar), due to time. Recently revisiting the fandom and I am so happy about how the fandom flourished. There are so many long, well written and diverse stories now.
I was looking for a video to put on in the background, but 30s in and I stopped what I was doing to watch this like a new movie. I started audibly cheering and air-guitaring when the ATYD title screen came up. This is a brilliant recap of the fandom, and maybe I’m emotional but I could seriously cry over how amazing the marauders fandom is and how much we built out of nothing. I was actually surprised to learn that Mary isn’t canonically a person of color, as I just assumed she was since reading ATYD. Lovely video!! Subscribed!!
thank you for the lovely comment! i'm so glad this was able to reach the people it did! i'm so seriously proud of it. and yes, i keep forgetting that mary and dorcas aren't canon poc and i'm like "huh?" lol
((This comment is literally just my own thoughts and opinions on different things mentioned in this Video Essay. Think of it as a teacher's marking/notes. Also re-reading this comment, I realise I sound like a semi-old person. I'm a teen. Guess I'm just part Remus?????)) On Archive of Our Own alone, there are over 60/70,000 fan fictions that include the Remus/Sirius Wolfstar ship. Obviously, depending on if you specified your search or not, you may not have known that. In the vast majority of the fan fictions from these 70,000, I can confirm that the main time setting is either during Hogwarts years, where the love is cut off abruptly due to their introduction to the war, perhaps they raised Harry together because although Jily (James/Lily) died, Peter was caught and sent to Azkaban in the place of Sirius. I've not come across an insane multitude of fan fictions on AO3 or Wattpad where it is set between GoF and OOtP, perhaps about 50, and although it's definitely interesting and absorbing to read each one, it's not often found to be... well, found. Or common, whichever wording you'd prefer. This is more about one of the pieces of content featured. I'm honestly surprised that somebody included a snippet from The Dandy Lyon's Club in a video! They make absolutely amazing videos relating to the whole of Marauders (focusing mainly on Wolfstar), to Newt Scammander content, and also Fantastic Beasts. They're extremely underrated creators and I'm glad somebody included them! I started reading Atyd in about early 2022, during a school break where a friend and I were exchanging fan fictions and she recommended I get into the Harry Potter / Marauders fandom again so we could have more fan fiction preferences in common to share. I looked on AO3 for popular ones, and stumbled across the 500k word masterpiece. Whilst it's been nearly a full year since I started, I... have not finished it. I stopped reading at about Chapter 73, when I was getting bored with the same world and style, which often happens, and read other fan fictions of wolfstar to help boost my motivation. Sadly, I did end up falling out of love with the fandom because of the excessive amount of time I had started to dedicate to it, but recently fell back in just before New Year's. Also, whilst I sometimes disagree with certain fan casts (for example, with the introduction to the Netflix series Wednesday, I would've preferred to fan cast Remus as Tyler Galpin/Hunter Doohan, or young Sirius as Gary Oldman's real son, because WOW), I'm in love with the wide spread of characterisation and diversity!! Whilst I'm not into fan fiction that much anymore (I prefer watching video compilations, or skits made by those such as The Dandy Lyon Club), I thought after this probably painful recount of opinions, you might want some to read on a rainy day !! Here are my top three (Wolfstar-mained) Marauders fits that I've read over time (and admittedly, some I have yet to finish)! "Casting Moonshadows" by Moonsign on AO3 - archiveofourown.org/works/12147474/chapters/27562521 "A Cure For Nightmares" by picascribit on AO3 - archiveofourown.org/works/920957/chapters/1788530 "Shelter" by sarssasstic on Wattpad - www.wattpad.com/story/108194289-shelter-•-wolfstar-au ^ All of these writers are simply fantastic!! And for a beautiful, final flourish, I must say. I have not finished a single one. ((also i feel threatened whenever I edit a comment. This edit was made just to fix some line spacings and grammar mistakes. good day x))
thanks for the in-depth comment! i love picascribit SO MUCH but i haven't read ACFN yet so i will check it out! as for my discussion on GOF-OOTP fics, the majority of them were on forums and databases that don't exists anymore and predate ao3. Hogwarts-era is definitely more prevalent on ao3
@@BrynnBeverly The information on the predating websites does explain a lot, and I went on AO3 just earlier today to read something, and definitely realised the prevalency. Picascribit is hands-down my favourite writer on AO3, with the way they infer their own character personalities and storylines to create pure masterpieces. Thanks for considering to reply to my mini follow-up essay, jubil3e, and for the returned input !! Have a nice day x
First thing to say: I´m really starting to love video essays. They are much better fit for delivering the right kind of message, with help of visuals, music and pleasant voice reading those fascinating words on a topic you yourself searched for. They create an unique content which may be caused by their yet widely undiscovered potential. All the things that couldn´t appear in an essay written on a paper or a computer help to understand the topic better, they create the right atmosphere and some are even able to keep your full attention for an entire video. I recently watched a 2 hours long video essay on Doctor Who and it ended in a blink of an eye, it was so nicely put together I stopped minding the time. Speaking of this particular video essay, I didn´t even realize the video is about to end, I was too immersed. The attention catching title and the unknown picture (there is art you just keep seeing again and again; this one must be either recently made or posted on a platform I do not use) did their trick. The narration of this video was a pleasant touch - organized and clear. I have been interested in Marauders fandom for ages now, it´s one of the things that stayed with me throughout the years, as I eventually always came back to it and read or wrote another piece of fanfiction. While wolfstar wasn´t my first ship ever, it´s probably the most faithful one. I didn´t understand the hype and I didn´t realize how big the interest of fans actually was at first. But then I discovered how many fan effort was put in it. The immersive amount of fanart, for example. Some ships have got dusty and forgotten fanfiction, but you only know it´s huge when there are thousands of non-canonical pictures and comics. When new stories are still being made, when the fandom is is growing you can tell it´s something. The support of shipping Remus and Sirius was the exact thing I needed at that time. I became part of a community and it is something I can always get back to; the people are still out there. I hope it´s going to stay this way because I am not ready to say goodbye.
I've seen a lot of comments mentioning regulus + other death eaters so here's my take on this. in fics I love seeing people's interpretations of regulus' character and I usually like him even though he makes some *very* bad choices along the way. I however do NOT get the hype around barty and evan. they didn't get any kind of redemption. they were with voldemort until the end and didn't ever have the realization of oh this is kinda fucked up (or they just didn't care). I never understood how the fandom can babygirlify characters whose only known trait is basically evil 💀 at least regulus has complexity and his final act was a good one. finding a good wolfstar fic and seeing rosekiller in the tags is the most devastating experience istg some of these ships materialize out of thin air. I've actually read some jegulus fics too because I'm interested in their dynamic even though I would never want that in the canon universe and rosekiller is always shoved in there too like I'm supposed to care about genocidal maniacs who in canon were not complex they were just really fucking evil edit: I read modern au's with barty and evan and I take everything back I was unfamiliar with their game omg. canon rosekiller boooo fanon rosekiller yayyyy
i absolutely love the marauders fandom! its genuinely the only bit of harry potter (besides chanwills0's tiktoks) that has felt worth holding onto in recent years. wonderful videos!!!
My favourite part of the marauders fandom is that there are so many aspects of their story that have been completely built by the community and no one knows exactly who thought of them first but we all accept them to be true. And they’ve kept growing over time. I’m excited to delve back into these stories and see what I’ve missed in the years I’ve been away.
this is wild timing, i'm rereading atyd right now and also want to get into writing video essays, and now i see you here living my dream LOL great video, excited to see what you do next!!
I read all the young dudes in like October and when I say I went from smiling, laughing, awww-ing, to sobbing in a matter of a few chapters I mean it. It was AMAZING. I want to re-read it again soon it was that good. I absolutely adore how everything was portrayed. It was magical. 🐾⭐️
Someone recommended this video to me and honestly it has just the right amount of homely warmth and validation I needed for it to be the highlight of my day. Definitely going to recommend this to everyone I talk about the marauders with from now on!
Oh, I hope the algorithm really picks this video up. This was so well done, I was really surprised to see you weren’t at thousands of subscribers!! On my way to read that fic rn, somehow I hadn’t heard about it beforehand!
This goes beyond explaining the Marauders fandom. It explains the entire phenomenon of modern fandom and fanfiction in the most succinct way possible. I'm impressed.
“Harry’s dad and his dead gay friends” I’m cryingggg
The fact that Remus married Tonks , a shapeshifter who’s hair changes color depending on her mood, is a very bi thing to do after your former lover dies.
OMG, THAT'S WHAT I THOUGHT TOO 😅😅😅
Tonks also reads very transmasc to me
dude i finished atyd this morning and when i tell you i sobbed for the last 30 chapters straight. the marauders fandom is honestly beautiful and somehow agrees on every interpretation of the characters--or at least has an open enough mind to accept it. it's something so rare and fascinating: thank you for making a video about it!
shut uppp i'm on chapter 60 i'm so exciteddd
crimson rivers next babyyyyyyy
Understandable (for crying) honnestly, atyd is really the beginning of the fandom and I fricking love it like URGH I'm currently reading atyd but sirius's pov it's amazing, the gay panics are hilarious and constant LMAO
@@isra3323 ah I have to read it too!! Really the next in my list I've been so hyped
@@alex._420 yeayyy update when you doo!!!!
@@masontalarico7090 hi, I don't quite understand your argument, could you explain to me, why the using of wands is racist?
It just came out and is from a pretty unknown channel, so it’s going to take time for it to get popular
Because it’s adding queer crap to anything. It make a people uncomfortable
Like come on some of her script is wacked
“The internet- led by tumblr of course”
“reigned by the straight cis male”
“I know i know , let’s get into it “ *continues by obscure “gen z” tiktoks doing half gross stuff*
“This fanfic changed lives”
It’s all very written for the few people that have already watched this video. To the rest, if some lost stranger hops on its just freaky.
@@ntbored7727 if you don't like it, just don't watch it and move on
@@BrynnBeverly u didn’t understand the point huh look at @meh question
My personal fic from like 2010 has Dorcas/Emmeline instead, and Dorcas is dark-skinned, and I, too, didn't come up with all this myself.
yeah, 2013-ish Tumblr also already showcased these portrayals, I dunno where the idea of this being recent came from
I agree with your statement!
Which is impressive, when looking at the fact that most of the characters were mentioned once or twice in canon
yes!!! it's fascinating!!
yes and no. for some characters there exist 2 distinct characterizations or personalities that are split between older fans and post-atyd fans.
love this! completely depicts the lovely aspect of the fandom, representation is clearly one of the best parts.i also love the head canon that remus suffers from chronic pain because of his lycanthropy, it's just another way this fandom represents different communities

A year ago there was a strong outpouring of pain from a big part of Jewish and POC fans who documented and voiced their pain and how they were triggered, brought to tears and panic attacks and harmed by the prevailing need of the fandom to romantisize Death Eaters, who are clearly coded as nazis, many had to leave the fandom as self-preservation and many were bullied for speaking up, but nothing has changed :/
I really miss the 2020-21 days, the ATYD era before this new problematic wave. And it's upsetting because these characters were my comfort characters and the fandom my comfort space, but now it's very toxic and unwelcome :/
edit: sorry if I'm not answering all comments, as sometimes the answer is already in my post, or subsequent posts, or they're talking about something other than what I was talking about, or the point didn't come across.
Oh and with this being already outdated, I'm so curious about what the video would have looked like and what it would say now, in the current day lol

Made me realize that we literally created this out of nothing and I love this for us even though I should add that marauderstok characterization of the marauders is quite different to marauderstwt but either way its quite brilliant to see how much we’ve grown these characters
yesssss!! I've been waiting for a video essay on the marauders fandom :D
i've been wanting to make one for a while! this was actually a project for one of my classes lol
"The one who really shouldn't be named" GIRL this caught me off guard, almost spit my ginger lemon tea! It's brilliant - at the same time funny and a perfect depiction of how I felt about her since the moment she finished writing the 7th book. I'm just at the beginning of the vid, but I can already tell I'm gonna enjoy it
Edit: Yup, I enjoyed it :)
OMG THERE ARE FINALLY VIDEO ESSAYS BEING MADE ABOUT THE MARAUDERS
IT'S LIKE AN ADVERTISEMENT FOR THE FANDOM
Omg I need this what's it called??
as a member of the "read another book" gang, the glimpses ive seen of marauders stuff from my sister and some of the fic ive read, this subfandom is an absolute dream.
fantastic job! i honestly didn't know about this because my time in the harry potter fandom was in sort of the "millenial" era but now that i know it's happening i am so happy about it!
words dont explain how excited i was when you showed a clip from the dandy lyon club. my comfort yt fr
moment of silence for the people who were in the Marauders fandom before 2020, and before ATYD became the be all end all. it's rough out there these days.
i will admit the focus on the girls is much better. however, we give ATYD too much credit there, as the fic is v limited in portrayal of them as it's influenced my the misogyny of remus' POV.
i love this so much i'm sending it to every person i've ever mentioned the marauders fandom to
As a millennial who has heard of the marauders but never knew what it was, thank you for making this.
This one of the best video essays I’ve ever heard I hope to be as well spoken as you are
aww thank you so much!
holy shit holy shit holy shit AHHHHHH this puts SOOO much depth to it ... yk that feeling thats like happy and giddy and excited and kicking feet and screaming.. well that was me for the past 10 minutes and 24 seconds. bye, i'm going to go cry now :)
Me and my friend actually want to write an thesis about this for school
Good lord the shoebox project! Taking me back…
I still think Marauders is the best fandom.
There isn't anything sad about it but the marauders mean so much to many people (me included) and i love the community we have build so much
I'd like to see j.k do a book about marauders?
That’d be nice too, but then the Marauders fandom would be throwing a fit because their fanon version of the Marauders and those related isn’t portrayed.
I miss when the fandom was not toxic.
Honestly, any big fandom will become toxic eventually. The marauders is actually pretty good considering it's counterparts.
This video now has subtitles in French thanks to @Shinrin and Portuguese thanks to @andreluiz6023 ! Thank you all so much for the support

don't know why but I was smiling so much throughout this video. thank you
This is SO GOOD and it's crazy to think it only has around 50k views. I've been looking for a video about this topic for so long!
why did I start squealing when all the young dudes popped up on screen?
Marauders walked so Goncharov could run
I appreciate the work you put into this. For about a year out of nowhere fan art from this fandom has been creeping into my TikTok fyp and I never really knew what it was about. Eventually it kept showing up so much that I had to look deeper into it and you explained it all for me. I never imagined I would want to read a fan fic until now.
This video explains it wonderfully!! We saw our chance to take a story that excludes rep and ran faster than James can fly a broom. It brought a new element of acceptance and a place of belonging into the wizarding world.
thankyou so much for this video!! It really helped me understand the marauders
Why did this make me cry! Your voice is so pretty and the way this is put together just makes me so happy🥹💗😭
Awesome summary! I was honestly so confused by all the tiktoks that began to pop up on my feed and this explains it all!
having flashbacks to my HP era in 2017 and having wolfstar on my PERSONAL accs bio 😭
I was fr crazy and i did participate in the 2020 revival but i didnt read ATYD until january of last year bc i wasnt on social media like that
thumbnail art is by @nastadraws on twitter!! i should've taken the time to credit them - my apologies!
OMG THIS VID >>>>>>>
literally stole my thoughts out of my brain
isn't is so just absolutely amazing that we (essentially) collectively created these characters from barely anything?? and now they're household names and their quirks and personalities continue to be forever explored- there's always some tiny little headcannon that someone dreams up that adds to the whole marauders narrative AND IT'S SO GOOD TOO
hoping commenting boosts ur reach I usually don't lmao :DD
Okay but this???? This is BEAUTIFUL!!!! PLEASE keep up the good work!
the things you mentioned about poc and plus size fan art and fan casts have been around at least since i entered the fandom in 2015 and i think much longer too. emmeline was no name drop she survived the first war and rejoined the order and helped harry on a mission after which she died but she was mentioned quite a lot and even had a few lines i think, her death came as a big shock to the order. and i love that atyd made the marauders more mainstream, i actually had no idea it was THAT popular, but it also has some really problematic elements sadly (mainly misogyny and anti-roma racism including horrific stereotyping and usage of the g slur)
I think it has to do with how the fic tries to be somewhat true to English Culture back then with the references to David Bowie and etc.
@@Mialikesthings what do you mean?
@@leaf111 Back then in the days they were stuff we said that would not really fly in today’s society.
I do agree with the misogyny thing but that was not the thing I was talking about rather it was the use of the g-slur.

this video is incredible and summarizes exactly why I think the marauders fandom is so brilliant
i think i've come across at least 3 different marauders web series being made, I'm so happy for the renaissanceand recreation of this fandom in a more diverse way, like when you can say there is fanfic of your fanfic, you've done it
The marauders fandom 🤝 the fnaf fandom
Taking literal blank slates of characters and running up the mile with it and creating a way diverse and queer cast of characters than their creators (both bigots) would ever fear they could be.

Subscribed!!
thank you for the lovely comment! i'm so glad this was able to reach the people it did! i'm so seriously proud of it. and yes, i keep forgetting that mary and dorcas aren't canon poc and i'm like "huh?" lol
im not joking when i say the marauders saved my whole life
ATYD is so good but I couldn't finish it, not knowing Lily and James would die. Maybe one day I'll reread it and finish it
((This comment is literally just my own thoughts and opinions on different things mentioned in this Video Essay. Think of it as a teacher's marking/notes.
Also re-reading this comment, I realise I sound like a semi-old person. I'm a teen. Guess I'm just part Remus?????))
On Archive of Our Own alone, there are over 60/70,000 fan fictions that include the Remus/Sirius Wolfstar ship.
"Casting Moonshadows" by Moonsign on AO3 - archiveofourown.org/works/12147474/chapters/27562521
"A Cure For Nightmares" by picascribit on AO3 - archiveofourown.org/works/920957/chapters/1788530
"Shelter" by sarssasstic on Wattpad - www.wattpad.com/story/108194289-shelter-•-wolfstar-au
^
All of these writers are simply fantastic!!
I just wrote an essay on an essay.
Non, je ne regrette rien.
@@cutelionfish7104 thank you for this lovely comment! It's amazing how this fandom has touched so many and I'm glad I was able to articulate it well.
I've actually read some jegulus fics too because I'm interested in their dynamic even though I would never want that in the canon universe and rosekiller is always shoved in there too like I'm supposed to care about genocidal maniacs who in canon were not complex they were just really fucking evil
edit: I read modern au's with barty and evan and I take everything back I was unfamiliar with their game omg. canon rosekiller boooo fanon rosekiller yayyyy
Now there're also the ships party (Peter Pettigrew x Barty Crouch Jr.) and partyvan (Peter Pettigrew x Barty Crouch Jr. x Evan Rosier)
just letting everyone know that theres a version of ATYD from Sirius's perspective and if you havent read it you should go do that
this is gonna blow up this is a GREAT video, from the script, to the visuals YUH I loved. and yes first and foremost im a marauders fan
i absolutely love the marauders fandom! its genuinely the only bit of harry potter (besides chanwills0's tiktoks) that has felt worth holding onto in recent years. wonderful videos!!!
So they had a Renaissance, just like the "Twilight" fandom.
My favourite part of the marauders fandom is that there are so many aspects of their story that have been completely built by the community and no one knows exactly who thought of them first but we all accept them to be true. And they’ve kept growing over time. I’m excited to delve back into these stories and see what I’ve missed in the years I’ve been away.
this is wild timing, i'm rereading atyd right now and also want to get into writing video essays, and now i see you here living my dream LOL
great video, excited to see what you do next!!
I read all the young dudes in like October and when I say I went from smiling, laughing, awww-ing, to sobbing in a matter of a few chapters I mean it. It was AMAZING. I want to re-read it again soon it was that good. I absolutely adore how everything was portrayed. It was magical. 🐾⭐️
