I used to ship Benny and Ethan back in the day! Love to hear that the MBAV fandom is still kicking. Applying a queer lens to a supernatural coming of age story is a favorite pastime of mine. Also, I love the background thunder!
23:35 one of the more notable examples of this that comes to mind for me is with the supernatural/destiel fandom. fans HATED any female love interest that came up for dean or castiel to the point where the writers stopped trying to give dean a girlfriend in his endgame because fans (destiel shippers) hated them and protested so much. (in the end they did kinda give us canon destiel so maybe bullying works, but i know some people involved in the show really resented fans for that at the time.) now, granted, supernatural was never great at writing women, but specifically the character of lisa was, and honestly still is, almost unjustifiably hated solely because she was “in the way”. some people have been able to come around on her and a decent amount of us appreciate her for what she was and know it was just bad writing that made her bad, but i still see people hating lisa or making her the villain in fics etc.
I swore I fever dreamed this show in my adolescence since nobody I’ve ever asked has known about this show; it was part of my queer awakening as a child and helped me get through the abusive environments I had to live through as a kid. It’ll always have a special place in my heart and it makes me so happy and amazing to see people still talking about this show and I feel lucky that this video came across my page
I loveee this I love that upon restarting my mbav obsession I have found so many headcanons of the characters being queer or neurodivergent because when I first watched the show at like 10 I loved it so much and now I know I’m both of those things and I’ve always felt so connected to those characters

My personal feeling is that the main characters all exist on the queer spectrum and that they each would have some form of relationship with the other members of the group, you know if the show was willing to tackle the topics it brings up and then ignores. The group would be a polycule with the more primary relationships being between Sarah and Erica, Benny and Ethan, and with close secondary relationships between Ethan and Sarah and Benny, Erica, Ethan, and Rory. I think Sarah has a fondness for Rory but not canonically enough to think their relationship to be primary or secondary. Similarly, while I think that Benny/Erica could work, I think they would have to work a bit harder at building mutual respect for one another because, as is, Erica likes Benny but sees him as beneath her while Benny sees her as a scary femme fatale who is hot but not completely three-dimensional enough for their relationship to be primary or secondary yet. As for Rory, I like Rory, but none of the group seem to think of him as on equal footing to them yet, so primary seems off the table. Sorry for the rambling, but i don't really know of anyone else who remembers MBAV well enough to speak about ot with. Anyway, thank you for reviving my interest in this show which holds so many fond childhood memories.

But, that is the entire point of queer theory: looking at a text lacking canonical queer rep and using that same text as evidence why, in a world less mired in prejudice, the text might have been- or maybe should have been- canonically queer. omg I remember watching the movie premiere as a tween, and didn't know that a show followed up! Then again, I'd pretty much stopped watching Disney at that point (and was beginning my era of obsessively watching sitcom reruns like The Nanny, Golden Girls, etc). I remember the movie ending and having a feeling like there could have been some queerness there, had it not been Disney. I didn't fall into Tumblr until 2013, and I was pretty purposeful about distancing myself from a lot of fandom circles at the time, but I'll have to check out the MBAV tag, now! Great vid!

I definitely agree that women in fandom tend to get sidelined in favour of the male characters. Its most obvious in shipping for sure, and I've noticed it in a ton of online fandoms. I find it so unfortunate storytelling wise but also because a lot of these fandoms claim to be inclusive!

No one in Totally Spies dies. 2)Has anyone watched My Babysitter’s A Vampire Movie and Tv show, and wondered why the main characters Benny, Ethan, Rory, Sarah, Erica are friends? 3)Vampire lore I don’t understand: •Someone who might have their blood drained from their body has supper strength. When having any amount of blood drained from one’s body can make someone weaker. •How does being drained of blood give someone the ability to fly as a human and turn into a bat? •Do vampires have retractable fangs or do their fangs magically grow and shrink? •Do Vampires drain blood with their teeth like using a straw? Or do they use their teeth only to make puncture wounds to get to the blood? •What happens if a Vampire punctures someone very important vein that would bleed a lot if punctured? •Can dead people become Vampires?

MBAV will always have a special spot on my heart I remember the summer it came out on Disney Channel I watched it constantly especially after having foot surgery and not being able to do anything for most of the summer. I remember having a big crush on Rory (Cameron Kennedy) I'm a bisexual cis woman but i don't think I ever thought of this show having any same sex relations but thinking about it now as a 23 year old I think there was some queer stuff happening between Rory and Benny when Benny and Ethan pretended to be girl cheerleaders. Rory had a crush on "Betty" but it was literally just Benny in a cheerleader outfit and a wig and while Rory was supposed to be dumb and not tell who it was but it didn't hit me until now but i think yes Rory had a crush on "Betty" and Erica he could have also been Bisexual or something 🤷🏻♀️ idk maybe we're all just stretching things about a show that hasn't been around in years... unless.. we're not.. 🤔

I'm glad you addressed both the bashing of female characters in fandoms when the female character is perceived as "in the way" of a mlm ship (life hack: canon becomes a lot more fun when you view the "straight" ship as bi4bi!), and the flattening of queer female characters - these issues are actually what made me turn away from the SuperWhoLock fandom back in the day lol
