apparently this is making the rounds on beatles twitter so let me issue a series of corrections: 1. this is just a silly little video i wanted to make about something i found really interesting. it is in no way a historical record it's just a funny little video. i am mearly a jester. also i have dysnomia so some of the dates are fudged but the heart of the video still stands so please leave your straw man arguments at the door! i did a six part podcast series on the beatles and have nothing but love for them and mclennon stans so no need to feel defensive yall i support you in your endeavours 2. the beatles went to hamburg, not berlin - it says hamburg in my notes but again my brain has a hard time retrieving the correct words to speak out loud because im a member of #dysnomianation 3. similarly, it was DENNIS WILSON of the Beach Boys who introduced everyone to Charles Manson, not George Harrison. George was friends with Eric Clapton tho who is a shitbag so 4. pete bests mom said the beatles fired him for being too handsome, the beatles said it was because he was bad at drums! i was just joking about the first rumour because the idea that pete best being fired for being too handsome is fucking hilarious to me! like, what would that conversation even be like? this is not a history channel it's all purely entertainment 5. white artists stole rock and pop from black artists and popularized it. im not #cancelling the beatles but this is a truth! 6. the cynthia lennon quote “John never looked at anyone the way he looked at Paul” is FAKE it’s from deviantart lol thanks to the person who alerted me to this 7. this is just the tip of the mclennon iceberg so if you wanna know more do your own research
Jesus Christ, leave my girl alone, Twitter! Akysz! Let us have fun! Carley, please, don't let it get to you, people take themselves and their faves too seriously. It's a great video and everyone can do their own deep research after watching it (and if this research is typing mclennon ao3 into Google then khem khem LET IT BE) ❤
thank you for the corrections ❤️ i think most people just automatically feel defensive about this particular sort of interest because a big part of fandom spaces likes to call us weirdos lmao. but i think you're one of us and everyone can make a number of mistakes trying to recall something that has no straightforward record and is not contained in the same place. but if you're ever more interested there's a factchecking mclennon blog that does a great job of proving or disproving some information, and there are multiple mclennon icebergs that also provide some interesting links🙏 all on tumblr...the safe haven for the rpf minority...
@@uncarley all fair! I like that at the very least (like the very least) they have ever expressed respect for black artists that they had stolen or (to be nice) taken inspiration from, and at the time cover bands were VERY popular. So it was so weird to be taking, preforming, and even professionally recording other bands’ songs.
valid or… homophobic ??? you realize gay men shouldn’t be treated the same as straight men in the “men suck” discussion right ?? like he obviously felt weird about gay openly gay men this was the 70s
@thewrongcrowd6311 even gay men often carry misogynistic views. Obviously how this intersects with the rest of it is different, but i dont think theyre exempt from that kind of discussion, personally. Also, i hear gay men complain about other gay men all the time and say they suck too, so 🤷🏽♀️
The bisexual conundrum of "men hot but painful to endure" and "I don't wanna make women feel objectified when they're so awesome" so you just stay single or live the chaos
@@Swordprincess777yeah...gay men will grab your boobs and think it's funny cause they're not attracted to them so you can't be mad, I've seen videos like that
"Paul McCartney's not scrolling on tiktok" oh no my queen doesn't know the lore that Paul has DEFINITELY seen the McLennon compilations on youtube (before they were mostly taken down) because Ron Howard referenced Paul sending them to him 'to show what good friends he and john were' in the making of Eight Days a Week documentary. “The only request that came to me was from Paul McCartney. In a phone call he said “you know, if we’re looking at the touring years, I would just like you to view the relationship that John and I had through that lens. I’ve only begun to do this in the last few years, I’ve seen a couple of RUclips videos that fans made that just reminded me of how good friends we were." my man HAS seen McLennon vids on youtube.
If Donald Trump's rise to power and JK Rowling's descent into madness have taught us anything, it's that old celebrities with too much money are just as online as the rest of us.
But that's an assumption. I understand you thinking of it as "likely" but he never specified that it was mclennon, or that he interpreted certain fan-videos with a romantic angle. Like his quote literally was "how good friends we are" hahaha. But the internet is huge and I'm sure he has come across something, as all public figures probably do.
When I read that interview, in 2016, as a Mclennon shipper, I had to walk away from the computer. I was in shock. I was like What do you mean PAUL HAS SEEN MCLENNON VIDEOS
Not retroactively: Paul and John have been shipped back when it all happened. Women would write fanfics and mail them to each other. Them, right after Kirk and Spock, McCartney/Lennon is one of the founding ships of shipping. ( I don’t agree with shipping real people, but for history’s sake, I though I’d point it out. )
@@just-so-were-crystal-clear5245 I don’t have this on the top of my head, BUT I know about this since the late 80s. So way before the internet was a big thing, let alone social media.
@@just-so-were-crystal-clear5245 There is NO truth in there being fan-fics based on a physical relationship at the time 😂😂😂 The rumours began after John died when Yoko gave a series of interviews (early 80s) stating that John was "in love" with Paul. For more info I'd recommend the 'Another Kind of Mind' podcast. They did a series of episodes on Paul and Yoko's relationship.
What was the point of this video, yoko claims John said he was bi but didn't get to fulfill his curiosities, he never said that, so it may be true ,it may not.. who cares? Lol u dnt think its a little disrespectful to speculate on a unalive person preferences but they're not here to respond n speak for themselves? U shouldn't be speculating on that anyway, it's micro hom×phxbia, it shouldn't matter if someone is or not n is quite frankly none of yalls business
@@stephaniejohnson4703 they literally were. united names and calling it marriage. like they didn't even have to be lovers to be a power couple. their love was intense as it is
Also, second thought. We need to give more credit to Linda McCartney. That woman did a lot for Paul to help him through his depression after Him and John “Divorced.” (John literally came into the Beatles meeting and said he wanted a divorce and referred to Paul as an estranged fiancé in a later interview). Paul wrote Baby I’m Amazed about her and it’s one of the purest expressions of love I’ve ever heard.
carley i’ve been in the beatles fandom since i was 11 yo and i can tell you larry shippers are NOTHING compared to the mclennon shippers. i’ve seen people celebrating DEATHS of their partners/friends because “they got in the way” of their shipp. not to mention the misogynistic comments about every single woman that dared to be close to them. the classic rock fandom is insane and i love it (sometimes)
Also been in the fandom since I was 10/11ish (and my mom was in the fandom since SHE was that age and the Beatles were still together) and can confirm. Beatles fandom lore goes WILD and honestly I’ve been chasing that high in a modern fandom ever since
as someone who was DEEP in the beatles fandom as a 12ish year old, i never thought i would hear the word McLennon in the light of day. so many buried memories are being uncovered rn
I think we didn’t realise our fandom was so powerful. Once I recognised someone whose blog I followed as a teenager in a liverpool club smoking area and NONE of my irl friends understood why I almost combusted.
ME TOO. The way I bonded with so many people online bc of mclennon back when I was like 13 is insane. I lowkey forgot about it, until I saw this on my recommended. I had war flashbacks lol.
1:06:36 OK, there’s an interview with Carl Perkins where he basically said that this song came to him randomly one night and he played it for Paul, and in the song it said “think of me now and then “ after Paul heard the lyrics he left the room in tears. Carl- "Paul was crying, tears were rolling down his pretty cheeks, and Linda said, 'Carl, thank you so much.' I said, 'Linda, I'm sorry. I didn't mean to make you cry.' She said, 'But he's crying, and he needed to. He hasn't been able to really break down since that happened to John.'And she put her arm around me and said, 'But how did you know?' I said, 'Know what?' She said, 'There's two people in the world that know what John Lennon said to Paul, the last thing he said to him. Me and Paul are the only two that know that, but now there's three...you know it. I said, 'Girl, you're freaking me out!'...She said the last words that John Lennon said to Paul in the hallway of the Dakota building were...he patted him on the shoulder, and said 'Think about me every now and then, old friend." Paul told Carl he believed John visited his mind.
The amazing follow-up in the same interview is that Perkins is called on his intercom, just as he is finishing telling this story, because Paul McCartney was on the phone! Perkins then says that Paul has a connection to "the spirit world."
The number of people from that generation who were queer but were able to just write that off as “well, it was just the 60s, jorking it with 4 of your best dude friends was totally a thing”
I don't know who told you that they fired Pete best because he was hot because that's not why 😭 it's extremely well documented that their producer George Martin demanded that they fire Pete best because he wasn't a good enough drummer to be a recording artist and he literally refused to let them record without replacing him. it had nothing to do with looks Ringo was just a better drummer lmao
I was cringing at the Berlin stuff, I'm sitting in Belrin rn wildin out bc they were in HAMBURG 😭 thats also where they met Ringo, who at the time was more successful than them! Loved the video, but some of the research is like... fingernail deep 😂 but the Beatles are such a deep topic, meaning there's never ending research one could do so I don't hold it against her
Yeah, that part is pretty cringe and ill informed. On top of what's been said, it should be said that the dynamics were off as well. After gigs the 3 others would still hang out and party together. Even Ringo would join them, before joining the band. Pete didn't have the charm, wit or outgoing personality that the band needed to become the biggest act in history. Imo, Pete is mid in every way. If Pete was so hot and such a great drummer. Tell me what tracks or bands did he play on after he was kicked out of The Beatles?
This video made me cry?? Grief is so complicated. I still dream about my late boyfriend like he’s alive. He was 25, and like you said, I thought he/we had so much time to work out all our confusing feelings. The beauty of creating art with someone like they did is that a part of their love will always be alive, for generations of people to come. Thank you for such a good video Carley!
I'm sorry for you loss. This video hit me hard too. My dad took his own life a little over a week ago. He struggled with mental illness his entire life, and he was emotionally abusive to me and my family. When Carley talked about thinking you have time to work things out, it really got to me. Because that's exactly what I thought, I thought there was time for us to help him get to a healthier place.
@ so sorry for your loss as well; that is so difficult. Especially since he was abusive, too. It adds another layer to your grief. His soul is at peace now, hopefully you can find peace at some point, too.
when john was rushed to the hospital in 1980, the radio was playing “all my loving”, which probably means that the last thing he heard before he passed away was paul’s voice. they were reconnecting again and wanted to record music in early 1981, as john wanted to go back to england to see him and his son. paul regrets never telling john how much he loved him, and it’s so bittersweet knowing that they wanted to be together but that chance got ripped against their will.
I didn't know John survived long enough to make it to the hospital. I thought he died in the police car on the way there. Still others say he died right where he was shot, just a few minutes later. There seems to be conflicting information about this and it frustrates me. But I guess that's just what death is. Frustrating.
@ He did make it to the hospital, but was pronounced dead a few moments later due to major blood loss. I think it would’ve been such a horrible thing to people witness him dying on the crime scene, but regardless it’s true. The radio in the hospital was playing that All My Loving. John’s last words were “yes” to a nurse asking him if he was john lennon. Paul had such a mortifying reaction to the news, he wrote a letter saying he didn’t care about the beatles and that John was the only thing he cared about.
@@ncwheregirlare u sure girl? like I read some times into it and was confused by this and while I found it cute at first I remember coming to the conclusion of this version: John is shot, he runs into the building screaming "I'm shot" or something(from the new documentary) Idk if he dies there or not, because my conclusion was he being taken to the hospital and bleeding A LOT and Idk if it was when he was dragged or if he was already in the car, but I read that was the moment of him being asked his name or being asked if he was John Lennon, there are these two versions of the question. Since he was bleeding so much, when he arrived at the hospital, he was already dead. They tried to make him come back but failed to do so(because Chapman chose that kind of bullet that destroyed people inside), then the story goes on and apparently they put the song around this moment or something as a tribute. It's confusing really because there are many sources and I don't speak English as well as I can read it so sorry if I sound confusing too.
@ His last words were “yes” to a nurse. Also it depends where you’re shot, and since he was shot in the back it takes a few minutes up to hours for someone to die of blood loss, which was what happened to him. Also after John passed away the radio station started playing beatles song as a tribute for 10 hours, but i’m pretty sure that All My Loving was played unintentionally. Obviously there’s a lot of accounts on what happened or didn’t, and the lines get blurred sometimes, but from what I’ve read this is what happened.
now THIS is content! can’t believe ram was mentioned without talking about the picture of the two beetles fucking on the back cover though 😭😭 great video as always!!
This!!!!!! What was that, and then Paul was like "no I didn't even thought about the implications" "and in another interview he says he knows exactly what he was doing. Paul lies a whole lot
@@fernandezmel5068 lol, I wish more people would realize this. Paul just says whatever the hell he thinks sounds good in the moment. I saw Paul McCartney perform at Glastonbury festival in 2022 and he truly played 3 hours of wings songs from the vault that nobody knew the words to and had the absolute time of his life
No he didn’t? I’m literally looking at the setlist right now. He played literally like 23 Beatles songs out of a 38 song set. I’d say the ratio there is, uh, pretty solidly favorable Beatles-catered lmaooo

MORE INFO about them because it makes me sick 👽👀 : Paul mccartney put two beetles mating on the back of the cover where he dissed John, he said "now what can be done for you? She's waiting for me" and also saying basically "you lost the best thing that happened to you" Actually there are two songs that goes exactly about this in the same album but this is rhe only one Paul said its about John, but John believes the other one too was aimed to him. - Paul collects John things and has them displayed on a wall at his house because he likes to look at them, he also has a 5,9ft picture of him and John laughing together - John had probably the hottest Paul pictures and he bought them from a photographer, he also sold them when he moved in with Yoko -the song Paul wrote in 93 about their trip to paris mentions a cafe that was later known that John also mentions the cafe in a demo when he was still alive -in the Philip norman book Yoko literally said that she discovered and heard a tape where John was MOANING Paul's name and that he said to her he tried to have something with Paul but he was a "immovable heterosexual" -Paul said recently he dreams a lot about john people also says that he sometimes talks about John in present tense - John has a song (just like starting over) where he references 3 Paul songs and in the demo mentions that he was in bed with the walrus (in glass onion john said that the walrus was Paul) -in the real love demo, John starts citing and making up a song with news from a newspaper issue where Paul and linda announce their third child, and John and in the songs says "why must we be alone" and then sobs? Saying "and now with a baby and another on the way" and ends the demo with "just call him on the phone" - paul has a CRAZY song he said its a bout john ("but from George's perspective" lmao) called "this one" where he says " did i ever hold you in my arms told you that i do (love you) I was only waiting for a better moment that didn't come" - Paul also has another song called "friends to go" that basically says "i would rather none of our friends would know, we cant talk about this until they are all dead" look it up -in the Winston o boogie interview that can be seen on lennon's official fb page John interviews himself and asks HIMSELF if he had an affair with Paul, and John answers that he thought that the rumors were about Brian, but anyways he would like to go through all that in a future book when he's older. As we know he died young. Funny thing is that Theres a whole lot more out there, and its all true.
Sorry I confused just starting over with John's song "i know I know" that's the one where he references 3 Paul's songs In just like starting over deml John also mentions that he used to hook up with someone in a motel in montauk, john and yoko had a house there so idk why would they go to a motel
-in the Philip norman book Yoko literally said that she discovered and heard a tape where John was MOANING Paul's name and that he said to her he tried to have something with Paul but he was a "immovable heterosexual" WHAT 😭
@@ihappydawnz @ihappydawnz "John’s wounded anger was more that of an ex-spouse than ex-colleague, reinforcing a suspicion in Yoko’s mind that his feelings for Paul had been far more intense than the world ever guessed. From chance remarks he had made, she gathered there had even been a moment when - on the principle that bohemians should try everything - he had contemplated an affair with Paul, but had been deterred by Paul’s immovable heterosexuality. Nor, apparently was Yoko the only one to have picked up on this. Around Apple, in her hearing, Paul would sometimes be called John’s Princess. She had also once heard a rehearsal tape with John’s voice calling out “Paul . . . Paul . . .’ in a strangely subservient, pleading way. “I knew there was something going on there,’ she remembers. “From his point of view, not from Paul’s. And he was so angry at Paul, I couldn’t help wondering what it was really about.’ “ John Lennon: The Life by Philip Norman. This quote is also from there: “Do you know why I like you?” John once asked Yoko Ono. “It’s because you look like a bloke in drag. You’re like a mate.” Yoko replied with a laugh that he must be “a closet f(slur).”
In the immortal (literally) words of Spike from Buffy the Vampire Slayer, “The point is, they were once a real powerful group. It's not a stretch to say they pretty much ruled the world. When they broke up, everybody blamed poor Yoko. The truth is, the group broke itself up. She just happened to be there..” And he was so real for that!
when i saw the title i clicked immediately. this topic is genuinely so interesting, the beatles as a band, concept and as people is one of my favourite things to discuss. the history of them and the culture around the beatles is just genuinely fascinating
Lennon-Mccartney is forever one of the most nuanced, complicated, powerful and intense relationships in music history. I've read so many books, quotes of people who knew them, interviews, etc, and I still find something new every time - that's how deep the rabbit hole is. Yoko also said to Phillip Norman that John told her he thought about having a love affair with Paul but was "deterred from it by his immovable heterosexuality" and all of them, John, Paul, even Yoko, called whatever John and Paul had a tumultuous marriage and then a bitter divorce. John always compared his relationship with Yoko to the one he had with Paul, calling them the only two partners he ever chose. They reconnected in the 70s but never had a chance to explore it properly because of John's death and I think Paul has had a hard time of coping with it ever since. For anyone who wants to know more, there is an amazing documentary on RUclips called Understanding Lennon-Mccartney and a great podcast called Another Kind of Mind. P.S. Pete Best was fired not because he was handsome but because he wasn't as good of a drummer as Ringo was. George Martin told the Beatles to get rid of him and find someone more skilled. The Paris trip was om John's 21st birthday, not Paul's. Tho John did some crazy shit on Paul's 21st birthdays too including being a dick to Paul's then gf Jane Asher (John was a dick to all Paul's partners and most of all to Linda) and beating up a guy for calling him queer (internalized homophobia much). Also, the Beatles played in Hamburg, not Berlin.
comparing mclennon to larry is actually disrespectful because mclennon lore could literally be the plot of a sad gay a24 movie while larry is just two guys fan girls decided were dating because of how close they were ten years ago
There is no difference, to be honest. Both are speculation and not confirmed. Both sides have "convincing" arguments for their sides, but it is still speculative.
No matter if they had a more explicit romantic/sexual relationship, if anything they at least had somewhat of an intense queerplatonic relationship (a toxic one, but still) and it's still queering, and still super valid and very impactful for the history of the band. I didn't about the theories before like last week, despite being a huge Beatles fan in high school... but I believe it, it makes a lot of sense! I don't feel like it's "shipping" in the same way fans do with other artists, I feel like it's more acknowledging a very particular relationship and what it was in a time when people were very different about their sexuality
One of my Tumblr mutuals who I started following for Doctor Who stuff hard pivoted into McLennon shipping and I refuse to unfollow them but I’ve got no idea what they’re talking about so I’m very grateful for this video maybe I will understand them now ty for your service Carley 🫡
@@swiftlyaswiftie I blame the fact Doctor Who did an episode on the Beatles that hinged on Paul and John defeating the villain with the power of their music/love if you're a Mclennon shipper

Fun fact about the Pyramus and Thisbe play! It looks like they’re putting on the Shakespeare version that is in A Midsummer Night’s Dream, where the acting troupe are meant to be silly, so one of them plays the moon and one is the wall( from what I remember)
@juliac.4200 tiktok just showed me a bunch of proof that they were in love, and I was like 'yep, that makes sense I need to reed about them' and then I just found myself crying at night over the most heart crushing fanfics I've ever read. McLennon writers are too talented
@mariabelen3264 do you have any recs? I've been a hardcore beatles fan for years, probably most of my life lol, and I've never read any even tho I've been planning to
Carley, I have to write an essay, this is amazing. I'm over 30 and always loved watching your book content, especially! You're hilarious and I got some great recommendations from you. Now, the fact you're talking about the Beatles and McLennon of all things is unbelievable. Thing is, in around 2004 I thought I must have been the ONLY teenage Beatles fan in the world... especially since I live in Europe and the internet was quite new, no social media, no RUclips, not a lot going on there. I was OBSESSED with the Beatles. It was so much fun to collect books, CDs, magazines and to find cute pictures and interviews online. The music still plays a huge part in my life. That never changed. The fact that there is now a community of new teenage Beatles fans going wild on tiktok is crazy. Makes me believe in humanity again. All will be well in the end sort of stuff 😂 I love seeing young people re-discover all things Beatles. And watching some of the 60s craziness from a 2020's point of view is interesting, too. Long story short, thank you for sharing this fun stuff, I hope the video goes well! Loving it so far, feels nostalgic 😅
I am 37 years old and was also crazily obsessed with the Beatles around 2004. I too love seeing new, young Beatles fans in our modern age. It's so bizarre and fascinating and makes my weird little heart happy.
queen idk if u know this but mclennon have a yaoi straight to DVD movie about them called two of us (2000) directed by michael lindsay hogg, who directed some of their music videos iirc? it’s basically about a fictional last meeting between them in new york and features great Mclennon hits like them dancing in the park together, kissing in an elevator, and john crying on a roof ❤ it changed my life forever i must say that. also paul was asked about the movie after it came out aid he said he liked it and wished it actually happened so there’s that too i guess ⁉️
I think a really strong contender for Carly's next shipping culture/Tumblr lore rabbit hole deep dive would be the Ryan Ross and Brendon Urie shippers of days past. That was truly an unhinged era and I think more people need to know about it. And don't forget the 500k word trilogy fanfic either
Paul McCartney’s Christmas song is a top 5 Christmas song. Take it back! I was not expecting to be victimized by Carley for my Christmas music taste today
As someone who went in extremely skeptical... Who does not buy into conspiracies ever. You've won me over. Definitely think it's more possible that they had a romantic aspect to their relationship.
As a 2024 Beatles fan, I do want to believe in McLennon, but as a 100% straight boy, I recognize that this is just a perfectly normal and healthy friendship that every young man has.
The way you passed over when Paul had a 5 year long relationship with Jane Asher (a famous actress in her own right) and even lived with her parents and when John wanted to start doing lsd with Paul (first did it with George bc Paul didn’t want to yet and John took that personally of course) Jane was jealous of John because she thought she should be the one having that kind of connection with Paul first. John was always weird and down right obsessed with Paul’s girlfriends, short and long term. It was definitely his abandonment issues playing out, but i think it’s important to note how Paul entered the 1968 period with still being with Jane, and they were engaged until Jane broke it off during summer of 68 after she caught Paul cheating. She broke up with him on national tv!!! after basically living with John for a period of time working on sgt. pepper in 67, their most experimental work by far and they made it while they were basically a couple living together. It’s giving tortured poets department for sure. So Paul and Linda would meet at Beatles events during the 66-68 period, and they finally connected proper a month or two out from Jane breaking things off officially, Paul was in his sex and drugs phase at the time so he was just bringing random girls home lol. But I think it’s important to bring up the John-Paul-Jane dynamic because I think Jane was John’s original threat of not being Paul’s special person. I think John kept Cyn fairly separated from the Beatles, plus she stayed home so it was easier for her to not be a threat to Paul like Jane was to John. But I think John’s art school friend Stu who was in the band early on as the original bassist was Paul’s Jane, his threat if you will. See, Stu did not care about music and didn’t even know how to play bass but John still wanted his bestie to be his band, which annoyed Paul. I think that was the first time for Paul someone tried to take his special attention away from John so there was an underline thing going on between the 3 of them, plus this was going on in Hamburg, Germany where they were still probably jacking off together still. That stopped when Ringo joined and Pete Best was still the drummer then. Also Ringo was an established drummer in the Liverpool rock scene at the time, he was the drummer for Rory Storm and the Hurricanes which the Beatles opened up for!!! Also also Paul was working class and John’s aunt Mimi was fairly classist towards him and didn’t like how John was hanging out with a boy that was “below” him, so they had to sneak around her and Paul’s dad who wanted Paul to get a proper job. John had beef with Paul’s dad lol. Their schools were right next to each other, and Paul went to a private all boys high school in Liverpool right after WW2 and many boys didn’t get in, you’d have to take an entrance exam and Paul was one of the 4 people in his primary school to get accepted to this prestigious private school for boys (which George also got into!!) while John was the rich kid at the public school (before art school) Talk about an A24 gay coming of age movie set in the 50s-60s waiting to happen!!! Also also also John saw this movie in the early 60s about this gay lawyer??? I’m pretty sure. just a fun tidbit. I think he may have had some early queer literature as well but Paul definitely did read up on queer literature during sgt. pepper. They weren’t clueless as to what was going on outside of beatleland. And a correction - Paris 61 was John’s 21st birthday. Paul’s 21st (June 18th 1963) was when John almost beat up local DJ Bob Wooler to death because he brought up the Spain trip he had with Brian/asked John if he was gay. This was the first Beatles scandal. George broke it up and John also got into fights with 2 other people that night. I do think John was probably bi and towards his later years was on his way to finally accept himself, he had comments on how the main reason he got violence with others because he was “scared of the fag in me, this Oscar Wilde type”. So I think his sexuality was a constant struggle/battle he had with himself and it manifested in awful ways that hurt those who he loved, and hated. (Not excusing his behavior of course, beating people up is bad) Yes I am completely normal about these 4 British men why’d you ask!!!!
@ yes! I listen to them still :) I’m glad they bring more of an academic/creditable to the idea that John may have been queer and in love with Paul, up until now the idea was treated like a joke. But now even major rolling stone journalists agree In My Life may have been for Paul; platonic or otherwise. I just wish there were others in the podcast Beatles space talking about Lennon-McCartney and just the band in general through a queer lens more tbh, there would be loads to talk about!!!
The most covered song of all time is Yesterday by The Beatles. As much as some people might get annoyed by them or want to dismiss their fame or say they’re overhyped they were hugely influential on a lot of modern music, just as they admitted they were hugely influenced by a lot of music that came before them. They also pumped out a lot of music, with a lot of different styles and sounds, written and performed by them, in less than 10 years, that’s a monumental scale. We have so much access to so many genres of music today that I think people born in the last couple of decades truly don’t realize how groundbreaking and experimental they were because we just have lots of stuff that sounds like that and just in general so much more now, it feels inconceivable to imagine a time with less only a few decades more ago.
I feel like I have been compelled by my elders to inform you that the channel tunnel (crossing from England to France) wasn't built until the 90s and WAY too expensive to hitchhike! But we did have ferrys that went over the channel instead almost all the time and were much easier to hitchhike on. Obsessed with this weird content though, you're awesome
I know this video isn’t about Liam but when you mentioned Liam and Zayn I started sobbing immediately because I think about the tone of Zayns remembrance post all the time and just how much regret he had in it and it’s been a hard few weeks for me and hearing this just thank you Carley
Just to defend Ringo here. Pete Best wasn't fired for his good looks (that's what his mom was saying when the Beatles got big) he was fired because he wouldn't show up to gigs and had a hard time keeping tempo
also girl… loved this but the ai on now and then was notttt properly explained. There’s no generative AI used, everything in the record was played/sung by real people. Machine learning tools were used to seperate vocals + piano from the old tape recording.
31:42, Around the Beatles was broadcasted internationally, so they included other parts of British culture into the broadcast. The way you presented it made it seem like it was a skit written for the show with Pyramus, Thisbe, a lion, and the moon. It was actually the four Beatles performing a scene from Shakespeare's Midsummer Night's Dream! It's a scene where four players perform the play, Pyramus and Thisbe. The heckling you hear at the beginning of George's moon monologue are actually the other characters from the show watching the play within the play! I had a whole class in college solely about the history of the Beatles! They did a pretty awesome job, honestly, I never expected the day I'd watch the Beatles performing Shakespeare. Highly recommend a watch! :)
i genuinely knew NOTHING about the beatles before watching your video but you kept me interested the whole time. your POWERRRRR!!! no seriously thank you soo sooo much for you work, every single time you post i'm fangirling
Ugh Paul McCartney what he went through is horrible and make me feel for him. Imagine your mother up and dies with little to no explanation and then a few decades later your estranged best friend who helped you channel that grief into making the greatest pop rock band in history died being shot.
He was an amazing musician and songwriter, but the poor guy couldn't get more than one song max on an album until post Beatles. I love the Beatles, but he's my favorite too. I haven't even gotten to that part of the video, haha, but agreed.
My mom had a ton of John Lennon books, bios, and anthologies that I read as a kid. John’s mom had him young and didn’t want to/wasn’t able to raise him. His abandonment issues with her started way before she died. She had mental health and drinking issues. So John was raised by his aunt, but he always knew his mom and she lived near by. It bothered him that she didn’t raise him. As a teen she was like an older sister, John and Paul would go listen to records, play music, and party with her. When she died Paul helped John write “Julia” about her and his complicated love and resentment towards her. Allegedly Paul was fond of her as well. The harmonies on that song are beautiful. On another note, although I’m sure Lennon wanted to impress his peers, I don’t think his deviation in artistic expression can be reduced to that alone. John was really drawn to avent garde and experimentalism in art. He got bored with the pop sound in a way Paul didn’t. I recently watched a video with a Paul McCartney video where he says he and John both liked the avent garde scene, but John liked it more. And that John was drawn to Yoko because of the freedom in her artistry. And Paul said he totally understood it.
I'm about to build Legos so hard with this video in the background 'Thank you Queen Carley' we all say in unison, thanks for keeping us so well fed girlypop
I never clicked so fast on a video before in my life!!! I was in the Beatles fandom on Tumblr in the last 2000s/early 2010s and was DEEP in the McLennon/HarriStarr ships. It’s absolutely insane that these fandoms are still going so strong on TikTok and Instagram!
the fact that this is not a fanfic is crazy to me.........like this is some ao3 plot that would get millions of reads........ it was kinda heartbreaking ngl
Okay, but the reason pete best was fired was because he was a bad drummer?? George Martin (their producer) literally told the band that he would bring in a session drummer and they should fire Pete. Ringo was considered one of the best drummers in Liverpool and was highly sought after, this is pretty common knowledge, no? Also, there were a lot fans who found Ringo cute (he was hugely popular when they went to US) so I'm really confused why you said this, especially considering you made a whole podcast about the history of the band?
I know, this lady clearly hasn’t done any proper research and states “facts”/“quotes” without giving any sources. In the Beatles anthology documentary series, George and Paul confirm that Pete best was fired from the band because he was unreliable. He didn’t practice any of their material and didn’t show up to gigs/recording session. George Martin did recommend Ringo Starr and the band accepted as The band had previously worked with Ringo when he covered for Pete while the Beatles and Ringo's band were in Hamburg and was also had a reception as a competent session musician in Liverpool.
Her stating the reason the band fired Pete Best was the he was more attractive than the rest of the band, has completely discredited anything else she has to say. Listening to Pete bests and Ringo Starr's drumming side by side, Ringo is clearly the more superior, competent and tighter drummer. Ringo is playing in harmony with the band, rather than playing against the other members of the band.
Got into the Beatles earlier this year, and the McLennon of it all is literally my Roman Empire. Listened to a really interesting podcast called "Another Kind of Mind" that did a huge 12-part series about the Beatles breakup through that McLennon lens, and it was fascinating -- and I think very plausible and not outlandish at all way of looking at the events that occurred. Whatever actually happened who knows, but I was certainly entertained!
The parallels between McLennon and Zarry are actually wild, I still can't believe Larry become the popular 1D ship when Zarry was right there but anyway great video!
I'll say something even bolder and more daring. "Simply Having a Wonderful Christmastime"? I LIKE this song. The soothing synths, weird mix of instruments. The simple lyricism. If this song has 0 enjoyers I'm dead
I think if you stay (or become, I haven’t finished the video) an obsessed Beatles fan and listen to their stuff basically on and off for about 5 years, you’ll come to appreciate the Love album. Super refreshing take on the Beatles stuff once the original songs start to lose their initial shine-or at least that’s what it felt like to me
girl i'm hoping this will blow up because this is some of your BEST work! i hope it doesn't flop like you think it will, and NEVER underestimate the chokehold that niche tumblr rabbit-holes have on your viewers
Carly!! I was literally rewatching your older videos today thinking “ugh just dying for some new uncarly content” and then this appears as I’m making dinner. When I tell you this was MADE FOR ME, like I was already wearing my John Lennon shirt. Quite simply I’m obsessed, thank you QUEEN
I AM A HUGE BEATLES FAN and I've often thought about John and Paul's relationship and how it influenced their music. Even though I've taken a college class on the Beatles, I did not have all this information about their relationship. Thank you so much for the deep dive and for sharing your findings with us Carly!
@katherinelambert4662 i saw ur other comments and I think a video on theories of Paul and John being in love shouldnt be where ur expecting heavy research 😂 its okay to just have fun!
If anyone wants to have a more in-depth autopsy about the Yoko Ono of it all, I highly recommend Lindsay Ellis' video titled 'Yoko and The Beatles'. She talks about the history of The Beatles, and touches further on the concept of infantilizing artistic men for the sake of blaming women for their choices (John Lennon, Kurt Cobain, etc.) RUclips version is censored for the platform.
51:43 John loved to purposefully miss spell certain words for comedic effect. He's even written whole books in this style here's an excerpt "I was bored on the 9th of Octover 1940 when, I believe, the Nasties were still booming us led by Madolf Heatlump (who only had one). Anyway they didn't get me. I attended to varicous schools in Liddypol. And still didn't pass -- much to my Aunties supplies."
So a few months back, I fell down the McLennon rabbit hole on Tumblr, but I knew nothing about the Beatles or them so this video definitely provided some much needed background. Also kind of disappointed how you didn’t mention how Paul claims he is in contact with John’s ghost
I grew up in the 60s, a young kid during Beatlemania, etc. They weren’t gay. Just British. (As Brit actor Terrence Stamp said, “There’s gay, there’s straight, and there’s British.”)
I was on the Beatles side of Tumblr in 2012, and Mclennon truly was everywhere at the time. Mclennon fanfics were especially huge. I recommend going down that rabbit hole sometime.
apparently this is making the rounds on beatles twitter so let me issue a series of corrections:
1. this is just a silly little video i wanted to make about something i found really interesting. it is in no way a historical record it's just a funny little video. i am mearly a jester. also i have dysnomia so some of the dates are fudged but the heart of the video still stands so please leave your straw man arguments at the door! i did a six part podcast series on the beatles and have nothing but love for them and mclennon stans so no need to feel defensive yall i support you in your endeavours
2. the beatles went to hamburg, not berlin - it says hamburg in my notes but again my brain has a hard time retrieving the correct words to speak out loud because im a member of #dysnomianation
3. similarly, it was DENNIS WILSON of the Beach Boys who introduced everyone to Charles Manson, not George Harrison. George was friends with Eric Clapton tho who is a shitbag so
4. pete bests mom said the beatles fired him for being too handsome, the beatles said it was because he was bad at drums! i was just joking about the first rumour because the idea that pete best being fired for being too handsome is fucking hilarious to me! like, what would that conversation even be like? this is not a history channel it's all purely entertainment
5. white artists stole rock and pop from black artists and popularized it. im not #cancelling the beatles but this is a truth!
6. the cynthia lennon quote “John never looked at anyone the way he looked at Paul” is FAKE it’s from deviantart lol thanks to the person who alerted me to this
7. this is just the tip of the mclennon iceberg so if you wanna know more do your own research

I’ve only begun to do this in the last few years, I’ve seen a couple of RUclips videos that fans made that just reminded me of how good friends we were." my man HAS seen McLennon vids on youtube.
paul mccartney watching beatles compilations and reminiscing makes me want to cry 😢
If Donald Trump's rise to power and JK Rowling's descent into madness have taught us anything, it's that old celebrities with too much money are just as online as the rest of us.
Thats cute ❤
But that's an assumption. I understand you thinking of it as "likely" but he never specified that it was mclennon, or that he interpreted certain fan-videos with a romantic angle. Like his quote literally was "how good friends we are" hahaha. But the internet is huge and I'm sure he has come across something, as all public figures probably do.

Also, second thought. We need to give more credit to Linda McCartney.
I said, 'Girl, you're freaking me out!'...She said the last words that John Lennon said to Paul in the hallway of the Dakota building were...he patted him on the shoulder, and said
'Think about me every now and then, old friend."
Paul told Carl he believed John visited his mind.
thank you for sharing this!
The amazing follow-up in the same interview is that Perkins is called on his intercom, just as he is finishing telling this story, because Paul McCartney was on the phone! Perkins then says that Paul has a connection to "the spirit world."

I don't know who told you that they fired Pete best because he was hot because that's not why 😭 it's extremely well documented that their producer George Martin demanded that they fire Pete best because he wasn't a good enough drummer to be a recording artist and he literally refused to let them record without replacing him. it had nothing to do with looks Ringo was just a better drummer lmao
thank youuuu. i almost had a stroke when she said that 😭
I was cringing at the Berlin stuff, I'm sitting in Belrin rn wildin out bc they were in HAMBURG 😭 thats also where they met Ringo, who at the time was more successful than them! dude when she said that my eyes popped out of my head like in what WORLD
Yeah, that part is pretty cringe and ill informed.

I'm sorry for you loss. This video hit me hard too. My dad took his own life a little over a week ago. He struggled with mental illness his entire life, and he was emotionally abusive to me and my family. When Carley talked about thinking you have time to work things out, it really got to me. Because that's exactly what I thought, I thought there was time for us to help him get to a healthier place.
@
so sorry for your loss as well; that is so difficult.
😭😭

MORE INFO about them because it makes me sick 👽👀 :
Paul mccartney put two beetles mating on the back of the cover where he dissed John, he said "now what can be done for you? She's waiting for me" and also saying basically "you lost the best thing that happened to you"
Actually there are two songs that goes exactly about this in the same album but this is rhe only one Paul said its about John, but John believes the other one too was aimed to him.
- Paul collects John things and has them displayed on a wall at his house because he likes to look at them, he also has a 5,9ft picture of him and John laughing together
- John had probably the hottest Paul pictures and he bought them from a photographer, he also sold them when he moved in with Yoko
-the song Paul wrote in 93 about their trip to paris mentions a cafe that was later known that John also mentions the cafe in a demo when he was still alive
-in the Philip norman book Yoko literally said that she discovered and heard a tape where John was MOANING Paul's name and that he said to her he tried to have something with Paul but he was a "immovable heterosexual"
-Paul said recently he dreams a lot about john people also says that he sometimes talks about John in present tense
- John has a song (just like starting over) where he references 3 Paul songs and in the demo mentions that he was in bed with the walrus (in glass onion john said that the walrus was Paul)
-in the real love demo, John starts citing and making up a song with news from a newspaper issue where Paul and linda announce their third child, and John and in the songs says "why must we be alone" and then sobs? Saying "and now with a baby and another on the way" and ends the demo with "just call him on the phone"
- paul has a CRAZY song he said its a bout john ("but from George's perspective" lmao) called "this one" where he says " did i ever hold you in my arms told you that i do (love you) I was only waiting for a better moment that didn't come"
- Paul also has another song called "friends to go" that basically says "i would rather none of our friends would know, we cant talk about this until they are all dead" look it up
-in the Winston o boogie interview that can be seen on lennon's official fb page
John interviews himself and asks HIMSELF if he had an affair with Paul, and John answers that he thought that the rumors were about Brian, but anyways he would like to go through all that in a future book when he's older. As we know he died young.
Funny thing is that Theres a whole lot more out there, and its all true.
Sorry I confused just starting over with John's song "i know I know" that's the one where he references 3 Paul's songs
In just like starting over deml John also mentions that he used to hook up with someone in a motel in montauk, john and yoko had a house there so idk why would they go to a motel

WHAT 😭
@@ihappydawnz @ihappydawnz "John’s wounded anger was more that of an ex-spouse than ex-colleague, reinforcing a suspicion in Yoko’s mind that his feelings for Paul had been far more intense than the world ever guessed. And he was so angry at Paul, I couldn’t help wondering what it was really about.’ “
John Lennon: The Life by Philip Norman.
This quote is also from there:
“Do you know why I like you?” John once asked Yoko Ono. “It’s because you look like a bloke in drag. You’re like a mate.” Yoko replied with a laugh that he must be “a closet f(slur).”

when i saw the title i clicked immediately. this topic is genuinely so interesting, the beatles as a band, concept and as people is one of my favourite things to discuss. the history of them and the culture around the beatles is just genuinely fascinating

Larry is also about young artists being forced into the closet and not able to show their love.

Just watched Lindsay Ellis’s documentary on Yoko Ono, so this is like the perfect dessert to follow that entree.

Loving it so far, feels nostalgic 😅

that movie is so good i think about it daily
I think a really strong contender for Carly's next shipping culture/Tumblr lore rabbit hole deep dive would be the Ryan Ross and Brendon Urie shippers of days past. That was truly an unhinged era and I think more people need to know about it. And don't forget the 500k word trilogy fanfic either

Could not be happier to be this early for such an insane topic 😭😭😭
i aim to please!
(Not excusing his behavior of course, beating people up is bad)
Yes I am completely normal about these 4 British men why’d you ask!!!!
Did you ever listened to "another kind of mind" and " one sweet dream" podcasts" ? They are amazing!

this coming out during the rpftourney tumblr poll is HUGE
LITERALLY
