Big Bear Yellow Post Camping & Off-Roading - Southern California

- Goose & I head up to Big Bear to try & snag one of the six available Yellow Post campsites currently open in the Big Bear area. The off-roading to get to the site was absolutely gorgeous & arrived the day after they received a few inches of snow. All that snow melted pretty quick which resulted in a muddy mess of our Jeeps when all was said & done.
For those of you that live in Southern California, I'd highly encourage you research Yellow Post campsites & take the family up there for a night or two. Most sites are very easy to get to and during the spring & summer months are easily accessible with a 2WD. You won't be disappointed!!!! Here is a link to a map that will help guide you to the Yellow Post sites in this area:

I hope you enjoy the video & are all healthy & safe!!!

I have heard a lot of RUclips people make mention of pack it in and pack it out. All 100% correct. The Richard comment best way I think I have heard it! Kudos! We could all live our life by the the phrase, “Don’t be a Dick!”!
Thanks for watching and leaving a comment Brock!
Didn’t know the gates were open to get up in these spots. Good to know Daniel. Thanks.
You bet! Take care
That’s my secret yellow post!! Lol
Loved that spot. Stayed there last spring/summer. Super quiet, star gazing was awesome, we saw one truck drive by the entire weekend.
Mark - It is a great spot and love the fact that these YP are so close to home. So many more to visit here in So Cal...#summergoals
Thank you for bringing me back such great memories .
Any time! Glad to be there for you!
I really enjoyed this episode. Beautiful site. Thank you.
Glad u enjoyed Felix. Happy Trails
As usual another great video...glad you're back..👍
Thanks Marc! Glad to be back out again!
Nice video. Great to be able to have your daughters join you in the experience. God bless and enjoy those moments. Can't wait for my Daughter to get a little older to drive my spare jeep on trips too.
Thanks JT! Glad you enjoyed the video. Enjoy your little one! They grow up fast!
My wife and I camped up there last weekend and headed back into the area again this weekend. Loved it!
Good to hear! Isn't it great up there?
@@395jnky so awesome. Went up the east side from pioneer town last weekend. Post 7 is awesome! We stayed at post 5 Sunday night and woke up to a light dusting of snow Monday. Amazing!!
I enjoyed this very much. Thanks 👍
Glad to hear it!
Enjoyed every minute, thanks for sharing your trip. 🍻
Our pleasure!
Good to see you back. Love the video.
Feels great to be back...If I go too long without camping I start getting cabin fever...LOL
Awesome looking forward to camp there bravo man
Really enjoyed this adventure and loved seeing momma goose cooking and the looks your were giving her 🤣
Glad you enjoyed it....Happy Trails
Man your ol buddy Richard must do a lot of camping around Red Mountain. Im always cleaning up after that guy too!
Yahhh Richard gets around, that's for sure...LOL
RED MOUNTAIN A CHUCKERS PARADISE SOME OF THE toughest hunting I have ever done.
Then drove to Randsberg and their were thousands of them on the street and people's front yards.
@@daleboothroyd3793 my hunting buddies scouted them out, went back and not one to be seen.
Great video ,thanks for sharing Dan.
My pleasure! Thanks for the continued support GI!
I am new to your website but I love what you and your friends and family do l love the out doors and I also like the doors you can't always get what you want but if you try sometimes you get what you need. It is so cool to see you and f&f having so much fun God BLESS, and love your channel.
Thank you so much! Happy Trails Dale!
looks like an amazing camping spot.
It was! I'll definitely be visiting again this summer!
Thanks for sharing I did enjoy that video...it’s funny how you said Mama Goose gonna do all the cooking tonight but your hands were itchin’ to do it... Lol. I can relate to that.
Yah...I have issues..LOL Glad to hear you enjoyed the video. Take care!
Awesome weekend. Thanks.
Thx Rita for watching!
I don’t usually sit and watch 40+ min. but I did for this one. Great video from the drive up, the campsite + gear to the wheeling and lunch. Got a new sub and shared the vid.
Thanks for the sub and the kind words. I really appreciate you taking the time to leave this comment. Glad you enjoyed the video! Happy Trails
Looked like a great time with the family to bad it’s been rainy and freezing here in wa can’t wait to head to our get away land and enjoy some camping food look awsome
Spring will be here before you know it. Hang in there KMR
Dude... EPIC footage! So inspiring! Gonna get out here this weekend...
Right on Ninja! Have fun and safe travels!
My wife and I did the Mojave Road last weekend for the first time and had a blast. We ran across one of your stickers on a old stove out in the middle of the preserve which I thought was pretty cool. Enjoy the videos keep it up!!!!!
Hey Brian we were in Afton Canyon/Mojave Rd last weekend too! Wind was rough!
That is awesome! Glad you had a great time. Happy Trails Brother!
@@jamesc2072 yes it was. We were gonna camp out in that area Saturday night but didn’t because of the wind.
Love the YP sites up in Big Bear! Appreciate the comments on the heater. 👍🏼
You bet. Happy Trails
One of my buddies was up there last weekend as well. He was telling me today how windy it got up there Sunday. I was down in Anza Barrego and it was gusting up to 70mph. Was a fun day exploring, but not a fun drive home.
I love watching your videos and getting ideas for what gear to start picking up for some overnight trips. We have decided that we need one of those skuttles that you use. That is a great cooking item. Seems so much more useful than a flat table top cook top
Yah...coming down the mountain was super windy too. Glad to hear you are getting a skottle. When you call Tembo Tusk to place the order, tell Jerry Daniel from 395jnky sent you! Happy Trails
Stopped by last week to see Jerry and got my long legs based on your recommendation...tembo and I are very happy...love your videos my man...keep em coming.
Awesome! Hope they work out well for you! And glad to hear you are enjoying the content.
Happy Trails
Nice trail looks like you have great family to spend valentines with 👍👍
Thanks Hillbilly! We definitely had a great Valentines Weekend! My Valentine and I spent some quality time together at the quarter wash the nest day. #romance LOL
Glad to see you two are making good use of the knife...cheers
Absolutely. Thanks again for the gift!
Stayed in that spot last summer. What great site!
It sure is!
Another great video!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Great video..Great location to camp
Thx Afro! I appreciate the kind words. Happy Trails
Stayed there last weekend. Amazing spot, but good call on leaving before the wind picked up. It was a cold night for us but still worth it
Good stuff! Yah....We aren't real big fans of the wind.
Funny we did Afton Canyon/Mojave rd last weekend too! Wind gust were no joke! Awesome vid!
Thanks James...Yah...we were looking at weather forecasts all over So Cal and there was wind everywhere projected. I figured at least Big Bear is close enough that is we had to pack up on Saturday it would make it more manageable for a short trip. Hope your trip went well otherwise!
Wow, that was a great campsite. 👍
It really is!
@@395jnky I may have missed it in the video but what yellow post site was this? Was trying to head out there in a few days with some family.
I'm so excited for the review about the gazelle tent. I really want to buy one for my family but there's so many reviews about the bugs coming in im nervous. However if its approved by you im getting it lol. Thank you for the awesome footage I look forward to it and do my kids. !!
Coming soon! I'm hoping to use it in March...so stay tuned!
Was just at yellow post 31 on 2/19 to 21. The fire pit is back. Great spot!
Good to know...Thanks for sharing!
Bravo! Best video you have done!! Shots of the trail ( so I know what my rig is getting into) great forest camp info! ( didnt know had to be an established firepit) great camp shortcut on the stew!! ( I am a stew traditionalist, but LOVE that shortcut idea!!!) bravo! And mama goose was correct, the signage was wrong! YP 6, not 7 🤣🤣🤣 shhhhhh!! 😂😂
Wow. Thanks Fred. Glad you enjoyed the video. Happy Trails
I’ll be up in Bishop next week for some fishing, video has me excited to get out. Good times!
Will be too going to Alabama hills and fishin on the 3rd through 5th 👍
Right on. Send me a message and let me know how the fishing was...Take care and Happy Trails
Sorry about the Doors comment that was an old stones tune, I was over served last night. But I love the off roading and family friendly camping you do so cool thank you for your Great channel God BLESS.

Man I just want to say thanks for all your videos I have a 96xj and love camping I’m trying to get to where your at one day and hope to roll out with you on a trip one day
Right on! Glad you are enjoying the content! Enjoy the XJ!!!
Love your channel Daniel, I just bought a 1997 TJ cant wait to start taking my kids' camping. My daughter (4) she is already asking where is the roof tent to sleep. lol
I am a fan of your videos with the Family. God Bless
That is awesome! Glad to hear you're enjoying the content. Have fun with the TJ! Happy Trails
One of the best channel I've ever seen love all your vlogs very true and Im always learning a lot.- Shir
Wow, thanks Shir. Happy Trails
@@395jnky i think i saw your rig last year at monache meadows or i am just dreaming lol.
I was there. I did a video on that trip too.
@@395jnky So cool! Im glad i still have good memories lol.- its me shir
Great video!
Glad you enjoyed it
Hey Richard stay home!! Nice Video!! Big Bear is Beautiful. Wish u could have camped 1 more night . Till the next one ✌🏻
Me too Jaime. And thanks for the kind words!
🤣 at 24:42, someone almost didn't make it out of the forest that night! That look combined with a knife in hand! 🤣🤣
Awesome video. New Sub. I live in Azusa. I’ll definitely be checking that site soon.
We have a 4 person Gazelle tent and love it, I'm 6' and lots of room to stand up straight . It's sturdy and heavy duty tent material with straight sides, the only criticism I have is that the two doors are very narrow at the bottoms. You have to be very careful entering and exiting the tent. After some near falls, we got the hang of it. Of course we are much older than your family and don't have the coordination. Happy trails!
Hi John - Thanks for the comment and the tip. I've heard the same criticism about the Gazelle when it comes to entering and exiting. Happy Trails to you too!
Lol I love it!!! Great video! Those damn richard's ruining it for everyone. Seriously though that's an awesome spot
Glad you enjoyed Brandon!!
Here we go with the whole allergy thing. Man I hear that way too often.
*I love my dog!*
I work in the solar industry. Would love to see more about how you use solar in your overlanding! Enjoyed this video!
Hi Kenneth - It’s made by Overland Solar. It is their BUGOUT 130™ Solar Charger. Glad u enjoyed!
Reminds me of packing the Bronco. Everything had a place and you knew when the puzzle was out of whack or a piece was missing.
That's exactly the deal. Like a game of Tetris!
Whatever that smoky device was, you were smart to not subject Sierra to that smoke while in the jeep. Better to be a little cold and fight another day, Your reference to Richard is so accurate, in the late 90s we were on the Mojave Road approaching Marl Springs and we pulled off at a nice camp spot with big rocks around and a nice fire ring; which we had used previously. We got there kinda of late, but were familiar with the location. Unfortunately Richard had gotten there before us. There had to be at least two cases of empty beer cans. They had totally trashed the area. We did pick up the empties, but I had a fully packed 1986 Jeep CJ7 so not much extra space for empty beer cans. Please let Dick know that he is not welcomed!!
Yah....I was skeptical about this heater from the moment it was delivered and I started assembling it. However, I do know a lot of people that swear by them, but different strokes for different folks. Take care John!
Point to remember-Tracks with claws showing are usually of canine variety. Cats walk with claws retracted. Love that campsite..
Thanks for the info! Yes...this YP is a real Gem!
So jealous!
Nice!
Thx
Your time stamp @ 31:12 says Feb 15, but i'm wondering if you meant Saturday February 13th. We camped Anza Borrego near Ocotillo that night and nearly got blown away. One tent had two poles snap. Thankfully i was cozy in the back of the Taco. Thanks for the video and intro the the YP sites!
Yah...my editing game was not on oint in this video. LOL. Somehow that slipped thru the crack. You’re right , it was the 13th. And the wind was pretty bad everywhere this weekend we went thruout SoCal! I HATE the wind!!! 🌬
Nice 👍
Thx Ozzie
Another great video!! I hate Richards lol. Looked like Momma Goose was ready to hit you with the spatula lol.
Thanks for leaving a comment...Mamagoose was about to hit me with that spatula. LOL
Been secretly looking for a Jeep !
Shhhhh
Do it uncle!
Love everything you do man. Well done. Amazing relationship w your wife on full display. Lots of people would envy that type of communication. (PS.. your amazon link is broken)
Thanks Michael. I appreciate the kind words. And good looking out on the link. Its fixed now. Happy Trails
Great video! Loved that PSA too. Sucks you had bad luck w your diesel heater. I absolutely love mine, same w my trail buddies. Looks like you didn’t have an exhaust pipe attached. Also, not sure why it was blowing so much white smoke. It’s almost like you flooded it. Anyways, there’s a FB group all about those heaters, they might be able to help if you decide to try again. But you did the right thing, you can’t take a chance w our best friends! Thanks again for dope vid!
Glad u enjoyed the vid. The exhaust pipe was there, I just trimmed it down. Maybe too far? Too close to the intake. But even then with the slightest breeze all that smoke could easily make it to the intake. The worst of the smoke was right after I primed it. So, chances are it was a bit flooded. But the worse of the smoke goes away after a few mins of running. Thanks for the comment 510!
@@395jnky yup, there’s always a chance of exhaust getting sucked in. Well, there are people that run both vent ducts into the tent; input and output. That way it’s always recirculating the same clean air and the heater runs more efficiently because it has to work less to heat the air. I personally wouldn’t cut the exhaust pipe. If anything I’d buy a longer one. In either case, good luck and thanks again for the great content!
Single use plastic bottles? Come on man haha. Great vid per usual really enjoy them thanks.
Hilarious. Cleaning up after "dick", do that all the time too. Nice work
Thanks for watching and leaving a comment Cliff. Happy Trails
A couple of things to help out with diesel heater:
1 - In the menu if you don’t have a yellow mountain with altitude (usually in meters) readout this model won’t work for you in the area you camp because it’s not altitude compensating the fuel ratio.
2 - When white smoke is present it’s over fueling or not enough air. Turn the Hz or temp lower.
3 - You can keep the smoke out of the Jeep or tent by putting a flange on the back of the heater and attach another 75mm hose that you can move well away from the exhaust. This is the fresh air intake not the combustion air.
All good intel Thanks Shaun!
"...just happy to see you dear!" LMAO
LOL
Just started watching your fascinating videos and I intend to watch them all. Very interesting and I am very impressed with your jeep. I have two questions: how do I find out more about you like a bio of you and your wife. And the second question does your wife have a name besides mama goose?
I am running into Richard and his wife Karen quite a bit lately🤬 What great areas you have to camp!!
Will be following you and Mama goose! ✌️
Richard is a busy man...Definitely has a drinking problem. LOL. Thanks for the follow and Happy Trails!!
The problem you had with your heater most likely (from what I see in the video) is that you didn't extend the exhaust pipe away from the unit. The heat exchange intake is just sucking in the exhaust gases. Extend exhaust pipe to carry the gases away from the intake and you should be fine.
I think Momma G and my wife are cut from the same cloth- no fire pit, not a happy camper. You do it your way, I will do it my way! And the look she gave you when you commented about the onions......I have lived that look! Lol
Which tent did you get, the T3 or T4. We are getting one of these as I am not sure about the RTT for our camping style. Looking forward to seeing that episode! Cheers.
I know its cliché, but its true what they say...Happy Wife, Happy Life. We ended up getting the T3X. Slightly bigger than the T3, but not as large as the T4. My concerns with the T4 is trying to keep a tent that large heated and transporting it...The T3X is slightly bigger than the T3...Cheers
Well if you would look at the bottom of your diesel heater you'll see one port is for the exhaust another port for air intake so you're supposed to use a hose for the air intake and pointed to the opposite direction from the hose that's for the exhaust
Man y’all know how to camp !!
Ohhhh...No...I know how to bring way too much stuff with me...I'll feel like I really know how to camp when I can cutback on bringing so much stuff. LOL
I was wondering how your spare tire Rotopax mount is holding up. I need a way to carry a little extra fuel on occasion for peace of mind. Do you think they are durable enough securing the fuel back there going down washboard roads to last very long. Thanks. Enjoy your videos. Carry on camping.
Stil a control freak! Haha!
Always and forever....LOL
I'm richard! You should see my beer can reef i made offshore on my boat
you need to set your hz and fan rpm according to your elevation to prevent sooting and all that white smoke.
I was barely able to figure out how to turn the thing on...LOL I'll keep messing with it and see what I can do with it...
Hey, went to that spot yesterday just to recon. It’s a sweet spot, but so is yellow post 6 as a backup. Thanks for the info.
Its great to have these Yellow Posts sites available to us so we can do some dispersed camping and have a campfire at the same time.
I know that you've changed over to the Ursa minor in your newer videos. But how well did the iKamper workout for you? Thanks and love your videos.
We loved the iKamper...but between lowering the weight, especially as high as all that extra weight was located, and the ease of the UM, it seems like a better fit for us.
I understand that it's great that more people are getting into the outdoors but I hate these spots getting more crowded and trashed by newbies. Also we have spotted a mountain lion and its tracks many times at this camping spot so be careful!
Mr Jnky We are headed to Big Bear Friday 030521... enjoyed your video, NICE RIG, GREAT FOOD, GOOD LOOKIN dog !! Can you provide some directions that would help us to find your camp site ? THANK YOU
Hi there 805. Thanks for the kind words. Go check out my website at www.395jnky.com and there is “Maps” page that you can download for this area that will help you navigate around. Have fun and Happy Trails
395jnky, another excellent video, thanks. Question.... What Yellow Post # did you ended up at? and Yes, some campers are pigs. Maybe they that that on their own backyard, but public land is not their back yard.
Hi Ben. Thx for the kind words. We ended up at YP#7. Sure is disappointing getting to such beautiful spots and seeing the trash. Happy Trails
Could you reccomend lake camping spots southern ca please thank you!!❤
BEAUTIFUL VIDEO & AREA . FOOD LOOKED MIGHTY TASTY 😋 CAN YOU BUY / GET THE TEMBO TUSK SKOTTLE ADJUSTABLE LEGS BY THEMSELVES ? HOW MUCH MAY I ASK . GLAD THE WHOLE FAMILY MADE IT SAFELY TO CAMP & BACK HOME . BE SAFE. HAVE FUN. GOD BLESS YOU ALL ALWAYS ON YOUR JOURNEYS . ENJOYED 🍨
Glad you enjoyed the vid David. And yes, you can call Tembo Tusk and just order the adjustable legs by themselves. Call Jerry the owner and tell him Daniel from 395jnky sent you. Happy Trails
What do you do about the back up camera...my Trasheroo covered it so I had to remove the bag off my Jeep? Thanks for the rig walk around!
I never had a back up camera on the JKU. I added an aftermarket one that is located within my hitch receiver.
awesome video is there a website that shows which gates are open and closed in big bear i went this weekend and 2 of the trails i wanted to do where closed
Thanks for watching. I am unaware of any sites that call out the status of each gate. You might be able to call the Ranger station and ask.
I think you may have been referring to ‘Richard Cranium’, I don’t know him but I have heard a lot about him.
LOL. Yep...Same dude
Edit: I was trying to find that folding table I saw in your video on your Amazon store link and it’s not in there that I could find. What kind of table is that?
I ended up getting it from REI:
Mountain Summit Gear, SHD Roll Top Table L
We love it...And actually, if you put this name in Amazon there is a very similar one listed, for slightly less. I just don't know if it is as good as product as the one I have. We are very happy with it.
Thank you for your great videos! We enjoyed them a lot! Love the peaceful scenery! Daniel, just one safety concern and it is regarding the propane bottles that are inside the backpack on the back of the Jeep, in case someone hit the Jeep, I know they are small size.
My respects to you both regarding your seasoning and the stew, looks yummy 😋! God bless you both. 🙏🏼🙋🏻♀️🇵🇷
Glad to hear you are enjoying the content! Take care Mabel!
Hey man, notice you are wearing Off the Grid Surplus Gear. The Stampede flannel and the TB pro pant. How do you like the OTGS gear ?
Gear is great!
15frw to bear valley to hwy18 to is the way to go... more direct. Much better drive vs driving from the 210frw.
Thaks Mel for the comment. Sierra definitely likes this way better too!
Important to know that there's plastic lining in those beer cans, so when they burn they release fumes into the air. So don't burn your cans and don't let them burn if they are in the pit
100%. I can only imagine the nasty fumes it lets off.
Awesome Camp Spot!!! Do you require an Adventure Pass to camp?
Not for this Yellow Post...But some yellow posts do...The forestry website has great info to verify depending on where you are looking at going. Or you can always call the ranger station. They’re really helpful too. Happy Trails
HEY HEY? what YP number is this?
Good video... thanks again for sharing
I've seen many overlanders and camping enthusiast carry their own portable fire pit for that exact problem. The 'Dickheads' are trashing these campsites and using the firepits as garbage dumps. Never know what's in those things these days.
You found a good YP site... 👍
Thanks T. It's such a shame to see some of the areas these days...They're getting so trashed. I just hope we don't start losing any of these lands...Thanks for watching and leaving a comment.
@@395jnky Yup... Absolutely unfortunate and disappointing we have to cleanup after others, we all need to be stewards of our public lands to enjoy and have access.
Leave no Trace, 'pack out what you pack in', leave it better than you found it, there's so many 'dickheads' out there to have no clue
What trail is this? On the forest site it says the yellow post trails are closed during winter. So how were able to get in? Are there not any gates closing the trails?
What is the music that plays when you show drone footage? Marry Me Seymour?
Sierra does have fur... wouldn't she be warm enough inside the Jeep... maybe with a little doggie blanket? I can see worrying if it was -10 degrees or something, but around freezing, with fur... inside with no wind... should be OK. Or get her a little blanket?
Nice jeep btw .. what size lift is that? It has a good stance
Thanks. It is a 3 1/2" Rock Krawler - X-Factor lift. However, I recently replaced all the coils with Teraflex Outback Coils. The new coils really helped with the stance.
Maybe a Makita battery chainsaw in the place of bundles of firewood? For areas where you may have access to cut up dead, dry wood???? Save you a lot of weight and space.
100%! As convenient as it is to use that handsaw, it would be sooooo much easier with an electric chainsaw!
Where are you located bro? I’m in Rancho Cucamonga. Be cool to see you out there!
We're local in the area too. Keep an eye out...This time of year we don't stray too far away...But come Spring, Summer & Fall we will likely be somewhere not too far from the 395. Happy Trails
Unfortunately my brother! People just don't care. Every time I go camping, I bring large trash bags. I usually end up filling up one, sometimes 2 before I even set up camp. People just don't get it.
Beautiful view >> 13:05 --- GOD's country !
