Big Bear Yellow Post Camping & Off-Roading - Southern California

  • Goose & I head up to Big Bear to try & snag one of the six available Yellow Post campsites currently open in the Big Bear area. The off-roading to get to the site was absolutely gorgeous & arrived the day after they received a few inches of snow. All that snow melted pretty quick which resulted in a muddy mess of our Jeeps when all was said & done.
    For those of you that live in Southern California, I'd highly encourage you research Yellow Post campsites & take the family up there for a night or two. Most sites are very easy to get to and during the spring & summer months are easily accessible with a 2WD. You won't be disappointed!!!! Here is a link to a map that will help guide you to the Yellow Post sites in this area:
    395jnky.com/maps
    I hope you enjoy the video & are all healthy & safe!!!

    We have a 4 person Gazelle tent and love it, I'm 6' and lots of room to stand up straight . It's sturdy and heavy duty tent material with straight sides, the only criticism I have is that the two doors are very narrow at the bottoms. You have to be very careful entering and exiting the tent. After some near falls, we got the hang of it. Of course we are much older than your family and don't have the coordination. Happy trails!

    Whatever that smoky device was, you were smart to not subject Sierra to that smoke while in the jeep. Better to be a little cold and fight another day, Your reference to Richard is so accurate, in the late 90s we were on the Mojave Road approaching Marl Springs and we pulled off at a nice camp spot with big rocks around and a nice fire ring; which we had used previously. We got there kinda of late, but were familiar with the location. Unfortunately Richard had gotten there before us. There had to be at least two cases of empty beer cans. They had totally trashed the area. We did pick up the empties, but I had a fully packed 1986 Jeep CJ7 so not much extra space for empty beer cans. Please let Dick know that he is not welcomed!!

    Great video! Loved that PSA too. Sucks you had bad luck w your diesel heater. I absolutely love mine, same w my trail buddies. Looks like you didn’t have an exhaust pipe attached. Also, not sure why it was blowing so much white smoke. It’s almost like you flooded it. Anyways, there’s a FB group all about those heaters, they might be able to help if you decide to try again. But you did the right thing, you can’t take a chance w our best friends! Thanks again for dope vid!

    • @395jnky
      @395jnky  3 года назад +1

      Glad u enjoyed the vid. The exhaust pipe was there, I just trimmed it down. Maybe too far? Too close to the intake. But even then with the slightest breeze all that smoke could easily make it to the intake. The worst of the smoke was right after I primed it. So, chances are it was a bit flooded. But the worse of the smoke goes away after a few mins of running. Thanks for the comment 510!

    • @510_jk5
      @510_jk5 3 года назад

      @@395jnky yup, there’s always a chance of exhaust getting sucked in. Well, there are people that run both vent ducts into the tent; input and output. That way it’s always recirculating the same clean air and the heater runs more efficiently because it has to work less to heat the air. I personally wouldn’t cut the exhaust pipe. If anything I’d buy a longer one. In either case, good luck and thanks again for the great content!

    A couple of things to help out with diesel heater:
    1 - In the menu if you don’t have a yellow mountain with altitude (usually in meters) readout this model won’t work for you in the area you camp because it’s not altitude compensating the fuel ratio.
    2 - When white smoke is present it’s over fueling or not enough air. Turn the Hz or temp lower.
    3 - You can keep the smoke out of the Jeep or tent by putting a flange on the back of the heater and attach another 75mm hose that you can move well away from the exhaust. This is the fresh air intake not the combustion air.

    The problem you had with your heater most likely (from what I see in the video) is that you didn't extend the exhaust pipe away from the unit. The heat exchange intake is just sucking in the exhaust gases. Extend exhaust pipe to carry the gases away from the intake and you should be fine.

    I think Momma G and my wife are cut from the same cloth- no fire pit, not a happy camper. You do it your way, I will do it my way! And the look she gave you when you commented about the onions......I have lived that look! Lol
    Which tent did you get, the T3 or T4. We are getting one of these as I am not sure about the RTT for our camping style. Looking forward to seeing that episode! Cheers.

      I know its cliché, but its true what they say...Happy Wife, Happy Life. We ended up getting the T3X. Slightly bigger than the T3, but not as large as the T4. My concerns with the T4 is trying to keep a tent that large heated and transporting it...The T3X is slightly bigger than the T3...Cheers

    Well if you would look at the bottom of your diesel heater you'll see one port is for the exhaust another port for air intake so you're supposed to use a hose for the air intake and pointed to the opposite direction from the hose that's for the exhaust
