Big Bear Mountain Dispersed Camping

  • Big Bear mountain continues to provide my family & I some great local dispersed camping opportunities. In this video we meet up with several friends that came as far as Arizona, San Diego & some local friends that live right down the street from us. We all met up at a location that Goose & I found the previous weekend when scouting out some potential campsites.
    Whats most revealing about this site to many of you will be that this site & many others just like it off of Holcomb Valley Trail, are very accessible to even the most basic 2WD medium to high clearance vehicle. Although I won't reveal the exact location where we camped, since we have plans to visit it again real soon, I can assure you that this is one of many campsites we visited that a 2WD can easily access.
    I hope everyone enjoys this video & are all healthy & safe!!!

    I was up there that same weekend, camped on the south side of the lake, for the cooler temps and more shade, but wheeled on the north-side where you camped on sunday. I could not believe how many people were there camping, people right on top of each other at the yellow-post sites. Seeing that many people still camping above Fawnskin, sunday morning is unbelievable.

    • @395jnky
      @395jnky  3 года назад

      Weather was great wasn't it!?!?. All these campers are the result of COVID. People aren't comfortable getting on planes or going out in public places. This makes the most sense. On one hand it does make it more difficult and crowded, but on the other I love seeing people enjoying the outdoors and nature. My only hope is that every camper new and experienced leaves their campsite cleaner than the found it. Happy Trails Eric!!!

    You should have named this video "Brussels Sprouts Gate" :D I was looking for a utensil roll to hang for the Outback Adventures table and boom you showed it! On our last trip we pulled up to get gas and to make egg salad sandwiches for lunch and it was real inconvenient to open the cutlery case because our "sink" and cutting boards sits on top and had to rearrange everything. Don't want to pull "everything" out when I just needed a spoon and a knife. Thanks for the great videos and useful ideas and tips!

    Great video. We’re incredibly lucky to have such great areas to enjoy close by. The problem I’ve been seeing lately is that people aren’t packing out their trash. When I ran Sherman Pass and Monache a few weekends ago the campsites were trashed! I packed out way more than I packed in for sure.

    • @395jnky
      @395jnky  3 года назад +1

    • @HampstarWheel
      @HampstarWheel Год назад

      How much clearance do you think you need to get into Monache? I really want to go there but worries we don't have enough clearance on our 4x4 sprinter.

    • @Motorep146
      @Motorep146 Год назад

      @@HampstarWheel I've seen Subaru Outback's and Forrester's out there so I'm going to guess ground clearance isn't going to be the issue. More than likely it will be the height and length that will cause problems. The initial drive into the meadow should be doable but it gets tight, short, and narrow when trying to get to the end of the trail. That would be the area I'd be concerned with. You could always go with a smaller rig and drive it with them to see if it's worth trying. You could also bring a bike and recon it that way. It's definitely worth exploring either way.

    Glad I found your channel! We just went last week up and down the 395 looking for places to camp. With Covid, freezing temps (no fires allowed!), and all of the CG's closed it wasn't easy finding spots, but they're out there. I'm going to scour your videos for ideas - really liking the idea of Monache Meadows (fly fishing!). With the lower Kern so infested with druggies we really want to start exploring the 4x possibilities. Have you ever considered linking your equipment through an affiliate program? I know I'm looking at purchasing much of the gear you showcased here. Subbed.

    • @D9everything
      @D9everything Год назад

      @@HampstarWheel You know. that looked very nice, and I know it has great reviews. We haven't stayed there but drove through. There's river access. Just make sure if you're driving back down the mountain toward Bakersfield I wouldn't recommend driving after dark - I've always been a confident driver but I legitimately was terrified (in my higher-center-of-gravity vehicle, mind you) driving down at night. Might be different with a regular sedan or lower SUV. I think Keyesville looks really family friendly - we intended to go to Black Gulch through Keyesville to disperse camp, but ended up going way up to Sherman Pass for the last few times we went up there.

      395jnky use one of the coffee pots from grandpas days, fill it with water just to the spout. Bring that to a nice rolling boil. Add you favorite coffee grinds straight to the water. I like a good sumatra and add about a cup-1/2 of it, i like my coffee strong. Trick is to pour cold water down the spout and around edge of coffee pot, that makes the grinds drop. Serve up in a cup, that easy. Just like your coffee paint peeler strong! 🤣

      Hi and thanks for the comment. I'm glad to hear our content inspires you. I don't share coordinates only because most every place I go to is found on our own and we enjoyed every part of finding our camps. For us, half the fun is wheeling and seeking a campsite...By not sharing the spots, my hope is it will encourage everyone to get out and explore! Happy Trails....

    DO YOU HEAT THE TEMPO TUSK SKOTTLE BEFORE YOU PUT YOUR FOOD ON IT ? I'VE JUST GOTTEN MINE JUST BEFORE ALL THIS WAS GOING ON & I HEAR ALL YOU HAVE TO DO IS POUR WATER ON IT LET BOIL WIPE OFF & ADD A LITTLE OLIVE OIL TO SEASON ? AWESOME VIDEO CAMPSITE & SETUP ! THANK YOU ! BE SAFE ! HAVE FUN ! GOD BLESS YOU ALL ALWAYS ON YOUR JOURNEYS ! ENJOYED !

    • @395jnky
      @395jnky  3 года назад +1

      Yes I do...I usually will warm it up and then add the food. And when Im done depending on how dirty it is, I can sometimes just use some water and wipe it down...other times like in this video I will use a plastic scraper to get the stuck food off, and then add water and steam it off...And then wipe down with some oil to keep the seasoning fresh..Thanks watching and leaving a comment. Happy Trails!!!

    Thanks for the info on the compact camping gear. I love the adventures you and your fam take on. I’m interested in something like the Bugout 130. I don’t have a secondary battery on my vehicle and would like to run a small fridge through cigarette port while out camping. Will the Bugout 130 connect directly to my SUV battery and keep it charged while running the fridge?

    • @395jnky
      @395jnky  3 года назад +1

      Hi Jesse...To use the Bugout 130, you will need a controller that takes the power from the panel and converts it to a more acceptable charge to the battery. Once you have those two items, you are good to go! Happy Trails

      I suppose it could be, but I would suggest turning it upside down where the Tembo Tusk emblem wouldn't be impacted by knife scars. Its general purpose if for a table top in the lowest setting especially...a place you can put your beverage when sitting down...

    Living in the area, it would be nice if you also mentioned no fires are allowed when camping like this. Might seem like common sense, but this year alone Foresty found over 200% more illegal campfires in the area. Locals would appreciate those promoting these types of activities do it responsibly. And obviously to follow the "Leave No Trace" concept.
