      The problem with mock up dresses is: Once they’re done I no longer have any desire nor energy do to it again. It’s no longer new and exciting. And what’s gonna happen with a mock up dress anyways? It’s identity is totally twisted. It’s not even a real dress. It’s mock up.

      @@missrobinhoodie To be perfectly honest I'm the same way with the creativity fatigue after making a mockup, I really only do them for very important projects. When i do make them I pick them apart to reuse the fabric for another mockup later.

      @@missrobinhoodie I get that every time I make one. Whenever I can, I will break down the mockup I created and use it as lining for the finished project so that all that work doesn't go to "waste". It's not like anyone but myself will see/wear the lining, right?

Like I would definitely pay 5 dollars a month for the ability to get the patterns for this dress, a vest you made, or some of your Halloween costumes. You could even include a chart to explain what size a pattern should be for plus size people as well like if you're a size 14 times this number by whatever and this will be your size, or just how to calculate that for people to let them do it on their own. I’m always amazed how you end up looking like the characters in the end! 😱
    About gaping necklines: mock ups are the worst but super helpful in this situation! If you notice the gap early enough you can add and close the dart on the pattern, this way you’ll “reduce” the length of your neckline and prevent it from gaping in your final garment! And since you’re taking the excess away before cutting your fabric is going to be invisible on the final garment 💖
    About joining bodice and skirt: Don’t think there’s really a good or bad way of doing it... what you did with this project is just fine. Sometimes we forget that we have to join our pieces together and we just make the bodice close on the front and the skirt on the back (opsss not that I’m talking from experience, I won’t admit that I did this SEVERAL times 👀)
    So we have to keep that in mind when we’re planning our final garment and change the placements of things beforehand if the style of the dress allows for it of course!
    For this dress I can’t really think of a better way to join them, I think this style (with the buttoned front bodice) works better with really petite figures that can get away just with slipping it on from the front opening 🤔
    Otherwise you would need to change the design a little bit and add an overlapping seam on the front, to mimic what you did on the bodice, and let a couple of inches near the waist unstitched, add hook and eyes to close it (so it won’t flap around) to create a slit in the front that will help you get in the garment
    I hope I explained myself well,m enough, English it’s not my first language sorry 😅

    • @ilsemariie
      @ilsemariie 4 года назад +3

      @serendipidus1 Sure the dresses all din't look the same, and fashion was not always followed by the poor- they'd reuse and refashion the dresses from previous fashions, but making a new dress so far from any fashion of the time probably wouldn't happen. And in addition to that the Bennets were not poor- despite what the 2005 will have you believe. They were part of the landed gentry, and though they might have been poor in the eyes of people like the Darcys and Bingleys they were by no means poor as to the standard meaning of the word. So odds are, they'd have fairly fashionable clothes.

    • @ilsemariie
      @ilsemariie 4 года назад +1

      @serendipidus1 Yeah, the 2005 movie overall isn't great for historical accuracy or literary accuracy, but people who don't care about that really like it! Empire waists was all the rage, so it doesn't sit quite right in time even though admittedly it is a pretty dress

    Cat’s Costumery here on RUclips also recreated this dress and she solved the closure with a sort of asymmetrical dogleg thing. The skirt and bodice are attached across the back and half of the front, and the other half of the skirt buttons at the side. My mother was of that generation that thought, "All girls should be taught to be ladies", so I was forced to go to private school and take etiquette & deportment classes, that taught, "A true lady never sweats!" To see you exhibiting your sweat stained armpit, with pride, was truly hilarious! How free and delightful is this generation! Rachel you are so bold and brash and simply wonderful! I was a tom boy of the first water and school was an agony. My teachers disdained me for my attitude and lack of elegance. I didn't care and remained a free spirit, rebelling to the last. Only one thing I took away from that school, a love for sewing. My advice to all: Be yourself, be yourself, don't let them put you on a shelf. Take your scissors and your skills and make whatever gives you thrills. If it be a dress or bonnet, let it ever be your sonnet. Be yourself! Be yourself! Be yourself!
    I simply adore Pride and Prejudice and loved this project. Thanks for all the joy Rachel!

    Troubleshooting tip: regarding the bust issue where the darts went in. I’ve noticed sometimes with clothes the “problem area” isn’t really where the problem is.
    Looking at some movie stills, since Keira is uh less busty (what’s the nice way to say flat chested?) I think the way to get your dress bodice to match hers would be to add fullness at the princess seam below the bust, rather than above at the edge. Idk, I’m NO expert, but I have seen that help in my own makes.
    Love the video, and I’m quite tempted to make me one too, one of these days 😁 that skirt is amazingly awesome and swooshy

      Cat's Costumery did a 2 part video on this dress about a month ago too, she had a neat solution for the waist fit. There is a side opening on the skirt of the original dress, like a placket at the back, but instead to the left front at the beginning of the pleating (where it would be hidden and not easily spotted.) So essentially the front wasn't attached to the skirt so she can unbutton bodice, and skirt front to get in and out easy. There is an image I saw where she's talking Mr. Wickham where I spotted it. Love this film too and really enjoyed your video!

    About the gaping at the neckline; I believe I had this same issue with a tunic I made for a client years ago. The problem was only apparent when she tried on the finished piece, so it was too late to change the pattern at that point. I believe what I did was pinch the excess away at the shoulder seam - might be worth a try! It would give a weird shoulder line on the flat pattern, but should look okay with everything sewn together.
