Planetary hubs are quickly gaining momentum in the BMX world. But with the excitement comes a lot of questions. Are they truly the next big thing in BMX? How do they differ from conventional free coasters and cassettes? Do they live up to the hype? In this video, I share my personal experiences and answer all these questions.
Watch as I delve deep into my journey with the BSD Revolution - the first planetary hub in BMX, which has changed the game for many riders. I'll share my honest review, as well as insights from other riders, to help you decide if the planetary hub is the right choice for you.
Key Takeaways:
Planetary hubs are a blend between a free coaster and a cassette.
Proper foot placement and learning to adapt to new riding dynamics are key when using a planetary hub.
The planetary hub technology is rapidly evolving with new and improved versions hitting the market.

Thanks for the information Señor
The new 1.5 clutch from Alienation is pretty good! It tightens up the slack even more! It is also compatible with all the hubs. I have it in my BSD and it feels fantastic!
Just now caught this... Thanks for the shout out Douglas. And thanks for the first hand review. Pulled the trigger for a custom wheel with this hub. Was all the info I was looking for. Thanks again!
I love my revolution, ive had very little issues wirh it, just a little maintenance to the driver and keep the cones super tight!
I've ridden coasters from the 80's, (When it with a brake), Odyssey, Khe, Tufneck rollacoaster, and now a Colony Swarm. So I'm pretty familiar with them. On all of them you have to adapt a bit. Usually if you catch, (Planetary included), it's due to too much weight on your front foot. My favourite was the Tufneck rollacoaster but it wore out drive rings too fast and you would start having issues. When it was new the forward engagement was MUCH more like a cassette/freewheel , better than anything else including planetary. Catching on 180's can always happen but it is less likely on planetary. The fear of landing on a coaster brake teaches you to land in the sweet spot and I could land fakie over boxes, off stairs, etc no problem just got sick of breaking or wearing out them, otherwise I'd still be on one!
Glad i stumbled across this. Fair infomation,
I hopefully profile makes one 🤙💯
I’ve had my revolution hub for about a year, with a pretty good experience, I loved it, as i like the pedal pressure and hardly any slack, but it would engage randomly in fakies, I’ve tightened everything right, even if I spun the wheel with my hand, it would coast good then randomly engage every 5 or so spins, now I’m back on a cassette but swap back regularly to the coaster
Don’t know weather to get the revolution or the odessey quadrant v2 🤷🏼♂️ does anyone know if with the quadrant you can remove enough slack so that it’s like the revolution or is that not an option ?
Both my riding buddies bought that hub and loved it. Both hubs broke in six months. Meanwhile my Clutch works like it should after three years and no maintwnance.
The Female conversion kit is available on the Freenight website
I cant decide between bsd revolution or colony swarm. Or should i go to traditional freecoaster? I hate slack . Need more feedback
If you hate slack you need a planetary hub.
I have a westcoaster and a revolution, and the westcoaster is better
After riding traditional style coasters since the 90s, I love these damn things!
Hey Dougsterbob! Everyone’s favorite discord mod!
When your doing a fakie if your feet move a tiny bit like pedaling forward it will begin to engage. The smallest forward pedal will engage the hub
not logic what you say, the gap in fake is infinite. I've been using it for years and it never caught the fake
