  • Planetary freecoaster wheels like the BSD Revolution, Colony Swarm and Alienation Venus have become increasingly popular as of late. But will this all-new design take over the freecoaster market? We'll let you be the judge as we review the pros and cons of the planetary freecoaster system. These hubs could likely be the future of BMX freecoasters.

    With this coaster I can crankflip with no issues, I don't run my bottom bracket super duper tight just enough to where my crank arms have no wobble plus 1/4 turn. I've only had to do maintenance after a few months of riding once and that was just tightening up the outer cones. Some of my friends have been experimenting with under and over greasing these hubs to see the different results and they all like them.

      Great to know! I was able to kick one around but I also kind of suck at that trick, lol. That's when we loosened the chain a bit more and spun them by hand (as seen in the video) to get a better idea. Different setups will vary for sure. Thanks for the info.

    Would be great to see a breakdown and comparison with all the planetary hubs.
    There are a lot of dos and don’t that people still are unsure about them.
    I’m currently riding the bsd revolution, haven’t had a single problem with the hub. Been riding heavy on it for a good 3 months and so far so good

      The BSD, Colony and Alienation are all nearly identical internally. Check out Colony’s disassembly video in the description. I believe the Colony does have an extra o-ring on the axle, however.

      I don't do crankflips, never cared for them, so 1st issue... not an issue. And I ride brakes, so tiretaps and going too fast backwards, also not an issue. Yeah, I'd like to try them, even though I'm an old school rider who has ridden freewheels and cassettes for 90% of the time (I've tried clutch based freecoasters. Kinda cool but not for me.)

  • @skinnyrods

    Been riding the bsd one and I'd like to share my experience regarding maintainance. I first greased it all, thinking it was something like a freecoaster, the more grease the better. Totally wrong, it started malfunctioning. I had to degrease it all and try to remove all the grease that got in the cluth. Nowadays I have it as clean as possible, no grease whatsoever. Probably a bit of lube in the contact areas, such as the pawls but honestly, way too little. In other words, in this hub less is more.
    Make sure cones are properly tight and the inner parts are clean and I guess that's it.
    Correct me if I'm wrong, this was just my experience but I'm open to more suggestions/tips.

    Probably a stupid question but, what is the difference between buying the BS revolution hub and buying the actual BSD revolution wheel? (A part from the fact that if you just buy the hub you can add it to any wheel). What I’m trying to understand is, is the wheel that comes with it (orange and black option) specially made to go with the hub?

    • @danscompvideos
      @danscompvideos  2 года назад +2

      No you can add the Revolution hub to any rim and it's the same hub. Going with the complete wheel option just makes it easier if you want something that's ready to go out of the box, as opposed to building your own wheel. It's not specifically design for any particular rim.

    A few months ago I bought the Bsd Revolution hub and now I sometimes have the problem that the pawls don't engage when I pedal forward. The clicking of the hub is also no longer there all the time. Unfortunately, tightening the cone nuts didn't fix the problem and I don't run my chain too tight either. I actually love the hub, but if the pawls don't engage reliably, the hub is useless Do you have any ideas what I could do to solve the problem?

    • @danscompvideos
      @danscompvideos  2 года назад +2

      Try cleaning the hub out and adding a drop of dry lube to the o-ring as mentioned in the video. There seems to be a fine line of too much and too little grease in the hub. Coworker had a similar issue and this fixed his. If all else fails contact BSD or the shop you purchased it from. If you purchased from us we can look up your order and possibly send you new internals if needed.
