Love the mic locker! Looks very tidy and pro. My mics spend their days on the floor, on stands, sometimes wedged under an amp handle, generally not very neatly taken care of. I'm a slob. Good choices on the drum heads! I have one particular brass snare drum that loves the Genera Dry...but yeah, that baby is super dead. Too dead for me most of the time. That head does work as advertised. On the kick drum batter head...get a little falam patch. Make sure it's a thin one. It will protect the head and not affect tone. The thicker ones are more for clicky attack and plastic beaters. You don't need all that. Just get a thin one. Let's hear them drums again soon!

Thanks Greg! I'm loving the new drum heads so far. I'll pull out the kit sometime soon and get some tracks recorded. I've got a few song ideas forming so hopefully I can develop them enough to lay down some somewhat-in-time drum tracks to them :)
Good idea on the falam patch. Do you have a particular one to recommend? The product descriptions I'm seeing so far aren't very forthcoming about the thickness.

That one will do what I think you'll need - head protection without screwing up the tone.

Cool vid Tad! Like the glass shelves for the mic locker. No more "Which drawer is that one in?"

hey thanks MT! I used to have them all stacked up in their cases/bags on a shelf. It was maddening to grab the right one when they all have pretty much identical vinyl zipper bags that they live in!

A trick: you can watch series on flixzone. Been using them for watching all kinds of movies during the lockdown.

I'm enjoying your drum journey. How do you like those overheads as X/Y vs spread pair? You can try sdc sometime instead for ORTF I guess depends on your stereo mount. You're right, should be human head width, theoretically anyway. Something like Octavia MC012 pair or similar is perfect (cardioid cap). I would be curious how much of a difference in stereo imaging you would find between X/Y and ortf. :) Maybe it doesn't even matter LOL. thx for the vlog

Hey thanks so much! The XY has been good so far, although I've only recorded a few brief tests with it. I'll have to get a whole song tracked to really get a feel for how it's working out. I'm just so relieved to free up the floor space and only use one stand! I agree, I'm curious to hear the different stereo spreads of overheads. Next time I get the drums out, I'm going to play around and see if I can come up with a good comparison video. Cheers!

I was wondering about the XY overhead positioning of the mics , was the reason you used XY overheadas the term for it because of their physical placement in relation to one another or are they a mic model specificly XY ? / (the clarity and stereo quality was great so like fatheads and their design style i'm just wondering of their brandname ? for bothfatheads and XY's ..... thanks again for quality posts !

Hey thanks! The XY mics are the AKG C414 XLS. Those mics are multi-pattern, and they're very versatile so I use them all over the studio for various purposes. I chose the XY setup mainly because I could get both mics on a single stand in order to save floor space. My room was over-crowded with the drums, the stands, the cables, etc. So I wanted to see what results I could get with an XY or an ORTF setup since it would save a substantial amount of floor space.
      Thanks so much for watching!

@@YHRS your so welcome , I power my sound with the NVMe firecuda 520 SSD . Its the only PCIe gen 4 , for the job . Im a music lover so sound quality is key and I like to share with live broadcasting in a music focused platform online .
Thank you for replying , im sorry I've been busy with surgery and finally building the studio spec sound desktop id always wanted . So iRGB750W psu , pcie4 throughput thats unmatched for monitoring response is economic and only just released on retail market (so give it a year or two and pc manufacturers will start leaking it into the retail sound studio towers flooding the market...hopefully ) with only AMD providing main board support for the new technology the rest of the industry have to go to amd ....with throughput speeds only PCIe gen 4 can provide im sure they will , And ofcourse steinberg interface providing Yamaha HS8 powered sub and monitors unmatched in the market performance and sound monitoring across system.
I hope you get your studio back soon and its all worth your time without it.

I wound up moving out-of-state despite everything going on-and my studio is still entirely boxed. Oof.
Since I’m starting from scratch, I had begun to think more about having ample, clean power. I’m still renting, but especially when I buy, I can have some more fun.
How do you power your studio? Maybe not a sexy topic, but I could really use some ideas!

Oh boy, I know that feeling! I'm in my 3rd house in 3 years (moved from Kansas City to Denver in 2017, then to a new Denver house in 2019). Hopefully we're all settled down now and won't be moving again any time soon, because it's a miserable process. But it's a great opportunity to reassess the studio and figure out a new and fresh way to set it up, despite being a huge pain in the butt :)
I'm not too fancy with my power. Just last year I finally bought 2 Furman PST-2+6 power strips as my main power distribution for my desk and rack, and I bought a 5-pack of Furman SS6B for various outlets around the room.

Congrats on the new heads! If you've got a moment, do yourself a favor and check out Making Records With Eric Valentine- he recently did a whole video on drum tuning theory. One of the best I've ever seen. Take care!

Hey thanks! I did watch one of his where he was prepping drums for a session, and he was tuning them to notes in a scale for the song. That was what got me to thinking about using a sine wave generator and tuning to that. What a big job that turned out to be! :D
