I love watching videos like this, makes me feel normal about all the thoughts running through my head while trying to film. Thank you Harris for this, I hope to make changes to the next video. Especially the one about the depth of field. xD
Your editor probably deserves a raise. He did great in this video; the dramatic editing section is fantastic. This tutorial should be required viewing for content creators. You guys should do another DaVinci Resolve video showing the new AI features like subtitles, audio cleanup, editing by changing written script. Great content, keep it up @SenpaiGaming
@@Senpailove the work your team is doing. Harris has been giving back to the creator community for over a decade and it's greatly appreciated. Thank you for pointing out the microphone thing. I am a big fan of having the mic in the shot. I think it looks cool and also gives something extra to do with your hands (e.g. adjusting or moving around if you move or just doing whatever with it). Plus it's easier to get great sound without fussing. I would rather have amazing sound quality with the mic in the shot than so-so sound with a mic out of frame, but that's just me.
IMO it depends on what it is. If it's matpat on the couch or jacksepticeye having a talk then no. It's more distracting and pulls away from the point of conversation. Anything else I would absolutely agree with.
I am the same way. My mic is always in the shot, but that’s mostly because I don’t care to have it out. The mic should be positioned in a way that it’s comfortable, while not being a prominent feature. We’re content creators for RUclips/Twitch/Kik or whatever. We’re not making Hollywood movies here.
I think it is a great thing that so many people make videos, copy the industry standard and by doing so, making the industry standard boring. New ideas come up, things change and people try out weird stuff that can become the next cool thing.
For anyone's interested, I had the original hs80, and loved everything about them--mic is next level good and sound was great with atmos--BUT the headset was too small for my massive head. I tried so hard to keep it, even tried to stretch out the headband to reduce the clamping force, but ultimately had to return it because of the small size and the (literal) headaches.
WE DO WANNA USE THE BIG! 😂 As much as background blur is nice, for me I feel there is such a thing as too much. As you're literally describing right now in the video, I think finding that sweet spot of some nice blur while still seeing some background details is nice balance.
*I've just bought My First Cinema Lens as I own an FX30 which is a Cinema Camera I thought I'd try this as My Main Lens for my Talking Head Videos, and I'm looking forward to using this as I've never owned one so I'm excited for that and Your Videos give me insight on what might work and what won't work for me*
literally laughed out loud at: oh look at all that space he has behind him---he must be really successful! haha, we all have stuff like this that we think to ourselves sometimes. so relatable.
I like using asymmetrical shots, following the 70:30 rule, or the rule of thirds. It makes you look more like a presenter for whatever's in the background, focuses the viewer's attention on it.
Haven’t finished the video yet but had to say with symmetry - look at your desk! The left side is lower in the shot than the right (the right side is almost double the height in the frame than the left). I get what you’re saying and it’s a good tip though… 😊
I've noticed an interesting thing with the mic in the shot - I'm streaming to zero almost always, so mostly this comes from my exhaustive zoom meetings: when people CAN'T see my mic, they ask me why I sound so amazing on my airpods (which I leave in as headphones)... And when I have the mic in the shot, they ask me if I'm starting a band/singing karaoke/etc, poking little jabs at me and my Shure 55SH. When I *do* have viewers on stream, or in a video posting or whatnot, they NEVER talk sound quality unless they CAN see the mic. So, maybe professional=hide your sausage, personal=share it with the world? Definitely agree it's just one more thing to connect with the audience on, for the right audience.
Can’t say enough how much it means that you continue to rock the nail polish. Seeing variations in typical gender presentation make things better for everyone. It is DEEPLY appreciated 🥰
I love these tips! My favorite one was not blurring the background too much. I still shoot all my videos using my iPhone in cinematic mode. It gives a little blur without it being too much. I’m tempted to upgrade to DSLR just to get better background blur. The wide angle with light blur is helpful. Thanks!
I always hit the like button when I open your videos. Even if I'm not streaming or shooting videos I always find it's interesting. Devices reviews, guides are all great and entertaining. Even your journey to Japan lol. I just love Japan 😅
Something to note re: depth of field in lenses - even if you want to keep the bokeh (i'm one of these people) you will get better results from your lens if you close down your aperture just a bit. When lenses are shot completely wide open the entire image can be a bit soft, but as soon as you click that aperture down a smidge you'll have sharper results - even if the background is a tiny bit less blurry. So if you have a 1.4 lens, shoot in 1.8 or 2 If you have a F1.2 lens (o u fancy huh) shoot in 1.4/1.8 Also - bokeh is cool but whats not cool is if only the tip of your nose is in focus. Especially when you get to 35mm/50mm+, if you shoot wide open on your aperture, the depth of feild will be so shallow that some of your facial features being closer than others will cause part of your face to be out of focus, aka your eyes could be in focus but then your ears are super blurry. So...don't do that lol.
love your content helped me so much as a small Australian streamer whom is not tech savvy.. i have 2 x elgato face cams, and a card cam.. is there a way to help blur backgrounds on the elgato face cam?? and i have honestly tried for months and months to darken my background slightly during lives.. ps cheers for all the awesome content mate
I’m OCD and that white strip to your right would do my head in lol. I’ve tried angles from the right and left and I just can’t stop myself doing a symmetrical shot, no mater how hard I try. I even have to have the back coloured lights exactly even … so I have a problem?!?! I think I do 😢
I have a video idea for you, how would you setup a stream if you were going to do a stream without a camera? Obviously you are at a disadvantage when not using a camera, but what if you didn't care and just wanted to stream without one. Would you make the overlays more minimalist or not use them at all (boy would that make a short video)? Do you think you would try to setup a vtuber model or some sort of image that moves with your voice? Is there any setup advantage you could do without having to worry about gear being in your shot like you would with a camera?
I think the most challenging for me is the lighting. Especially for small/starting creators, having low access to light and background options, while references (other content creators) have a huge amount of things or options, becomes too overwhelming for starters. Any tips on that?
I was litrally looking for ways to blur the background, cause i use my phone as my camera .so no adjusting the appeture but the wes anderson analogy has given me a few ideas to try out . Thx Harris 😅😅😅😅😅😅😅
Really appreciate this! I've been struggling with the depth of field stuff.. I only record with an Insta360 Link and have a corner of my home office to use for recording - I appreciate all the angles here.. someday I'll get a big girl camera :D but I love the link just struggled with depth and appreciate the different suggestions. I've been following you for years and watched your growth from the beginning! Great work and keep up the great videos! Excited to do some more experimentation!
I’m certain this question will get lost in the aether and I’ll have forgotten I asked by tomorrow anyway, but. How would you go about lighting a video for a well-lit detailed top-down table shot whilst still getting sone kind of creative lighting on yourself?
Lighting. I do horror content and maybe adjusting my lighting and camera angles depending on the level of horror might make a difference. Could possibly get my viewers to notice the trend and help them brace themselves for the level of horror for each game. Imma test it out and come back to this within 2 months to let y’all know how it goes. Until then, stay safe and stay sane.
Thanks for the video, good ideas and a great invitation to experiment with stuff. Since this is the topic, my feedback for your shot would be highlights are a bit harsh, especially on your skin (skin tone also seems a bit like there's too much variability, maybe it's light temps idk, the lights near the right side of your frame are a bit distracting and close to the edge. Now, obviously none of this matters, your shot is great and you know what you're doing, but thought I'd jump in on the sharing of ideas.
I agree with the crazy bokeh part especially if it's to the point where parts of your face aren't in focus or if your camera is starting to focus on your nose.
So the people that were early enough just got a sneak peak at a future video I guess. Looking forward to your take on that comparison BTW. I don't think the video will be out before I get the new version and am able to do the comparison myself, but still looking forward to that video as well.
Have to say my friend that the shotgun mic in frame is a little odd. Most people spend some extra bucks for a shotgun mic so that it still sounds great out of frame :).
That depth of field point was something I just realized like 2 weeks ago. It's been way too easy over the years to just crank that blur for a "cinematic" background and unintentionally removing all the creativity of a setting 😅
