Great video; thanks. I'm wrapping up my VR6 chain replacement thanks to your guidance. I'm considering this "practice" for doing the chains on my Mk5 R32 next.... Somehow watching is so much easier than following through Bentley's!! Cheers and thanks again.
Just finished repainting mines & alloys refurbishing, exact same year as yours with wingbacks. have noticed my chain rattles and mayo on the oil cap watching this with great interest have done this job in the passed with a Corrado vr6 so think it should me much the same task.. greeting from Scotland 🏴
You have done a really nice job on these videos! I am thankful to have stumbled across them. I have had a terrible time trying to find good 'how to' information on these 24v vr6 engines. I bought a GLI Jetta that has the 2.8, which looks identical, and the car had been overheated before I bought it. I did a head gasket job on it and upper timing guides, as well as having the head redone. On startup, I think I jumped time because of the tensioner bolt being weak. So, it looks like I get to do it all again, but with new valves this time. I hope you can upload the rest of this job. I'd love to see it. Thanks for the awesome job!
Great video. Only thing is I use a tool to hold the sprocket when torqued. That way your not stressing that section of chain. Not sure if it matters but I always go the extra mile....
@@ThePunjabhe your chains will never see that amount of tension 8n normal operationing conditions as he put on that chain. I personally would never do that. I've done chains in all 3 of my cars and have had great success with this tool
No problem! Thank you, it is scary stuff if you don’t know what your doing! Just take your time read the shop manual, and have a torque wrench and the cam locking tool. Good luck!!!
Very good explanation, thanks for that. I have noticed you applied the sealant on the upper cover, basically on the head gasket. Is it how supposed to be done, I thought that nothing should be applied on the head gasket. Please clarify, I need to put everything back together on weekend. Thanks
@@unclemoesgarage6130 That's what I thought, the part of the head gasket where the covers are only still needs a sealant, on the both side upper cover and lower too, yeah? Cheers
Maveric073 Thank you, it’s a lot of work but you have a good piece of mind knowing it’s been replaced, especially if you drive the R32 like a mad man!!! 😂
Helpful info👍🏼 You dialled the VVT Adjuster clockwise on the intake prior to installation, what did you do with the exhaust cam gear? Did it need to be rotated clockwise as well prior to installation or can it only lock into place in one position onto the dowel??
@@hypebeastnation9284 Yes you can have a little play in it, but if it’s rotating like the Intake Cam Adjuster, then you have a failed Exhaust Cam Adjuster and needs to be replaced.
Wow this is a priceless guidance, pure masterpiece. Thank you very much. Just 1 question, what timing chain kit did you use? did you use original VW timing chain kit, or OEM and what?
Uncle my Cayenne 3.2 with 170,000 Ml. It presents an irregular misfire in some cylinders, I have already spent a lot of money and I only have to check the times. Do you think that the cam sensor can cause this failure? thank you.

That sprocket wore out due to the fact that VW didn't install the cover plate on the intermediate shaft. Missing that cover will allow the shaft to have linear play. No bueno That part is unobtainium in the US but you can buy a repro from a company in Europe.
Chains are Made in Germany, IWIS Brand including Tensioners. It’s what Volkswagen uses, but it didn’t come in a Volkswagen packaging, it came in a IWIS packaging. Guides and rails are Genuine Volkswagen.
I would highly recommend that you always install new tensioners, timing chains and guides. Especially if your doing heavy mods, like cams or internals. If something falls on the timing side, it’ll probably be your biggest regret. It’s like $200-300 USD to buy kit. I would definitely do it.

Ok, it's been a year since you did the job. Please now remove your sump and see how much of that silicone gasket material has ended up in there, clogging up the oil strainer! Too much silicone kills engines, would be a shame for it to kill yours!

The sealant is only applied to the timing chain side. Not the entire head gasket. It’s only where the timing chain covers are.

what gaskets / seals are in the top chain cover ? part numbers? plz

So at 9:50 you show you resetting the intake cam adjuster when you install it, what about the exhaust side, does that not get a reset as well?

Mentioned head gasket kit, was this total / upper end rebuild or just timing chain replacement? Thanks for posting.
It was just a head gasket and timing chain replacement. No internals were rebuilt or replaced. Preventive maintenance.
Hello, is it possible to do the job without removing the Sprockets cam?
Merci pour la bonne explication

Hoseman thank you very much, it’s very true, I’m super busy, I hope to have the next few videos up soon.
Any chance you could post up the part numbers for both the intermediate sprockets?
If you removed just the upper cover, can you replace all 3 guides or just 2 (left and top). Great video
great job bro
cam sensor seal part number that in the top chain cover ?
I’ll see if I can find it, the one that came in the kit was for the Mk4 R32, and it leaked because it was too large. The Mk5 R32 is smaller
does anyone know what the part number is for the third gasket he replaced in the timing cover please

@@unclemoesgarage6130 ok thanks, do you make video a clutch replacement?
Can i just replace the top bolt chain tensioner without replace and re set the timing chain?
No you can’t, the chain stretches and plastic guides wear out. Replacing the Tensioner bolt isn’t going to save your chains.
Do I have to do all this if I just want to upgrade the cams
