I've always said the graphics for ascension are absolutely mind blowing for a ps3 game, it still holds up and looks like it could have come out today, one of the best looking games ever.

I notice now that the norse games took a lot of things from ascension, some spear attacks, some shield attacks, the automatic tracking blade attacks that happens when you try to juggle an enemy in the air, etc, which is cool

Unpopular opinion, but I would LOVE GOW Ascension to get a remaster.
100% agree. Of all the greek games, ascension is the one I hope gets brought to modern consoles.
Ascension is actually a really solid god of war game. The main problem is that it came after gow 3. But I love the aspects of the combat in the ascension such as the grapple, the ability to pick up other weapons.
Parry system is dodo. Flow is bad. Damage values. Enemy vafity. No real weapons. Elemental buffs have a delay when swappwed. Game Is pure downgrade. 7 out of 10
@@nemeru3352 I agree, the parry system is so trash. Also the camera is a problem as well, it zooms so far back that you can lose track of where kratos is at and was the reason for a lot of my deaths.
Ascension is awesome but it has a lot of flaws when it comes to the story pacing and the illusions thingy not being used in gameplay. So yeah

Ascension had the most human version of the Greek Kratos, even Ghost of Sparta had a more coherent plot and better written story. 3 was the darkest and bloodiest out of the series ,but had plot holes enough to carry Megatron's warship.

Ascension and Chain of olimpus are great games, but doesn't make sense chronologically and story wise.
Ascension is criminally underrated imo. It's like MGSV - the story was weak but the gameplay formula was at it's absolute best. It could have been a good prequel story-wise if we got some Ares screen time, it was one of the things many fans like myself was expecting/looking forward to. We wanted to see at least some of the atrocities Kratos committed under the name of Ares. Something to tie the events after his family's death and the first GOW game. As well as perhaps a more human side to him that wasn't seen in previous games, like Chains of Olympus somehow displayed a more human version of Kratos tbh. I get that it's before he sets out on his god-hunting spree of revenge, but at the same time his motivations for doing this can come off as inauthentic since we never got a clear scope as to what led him to meeting the queen of furies to begin with. It's kinda just told to us in the beginning prologue. Plus Kratos didn't make one last bad-ass speech at the end like he does in every other GoW game. (probably just me nitpicking but its true) The gameplay itself is phenomenal and I will never understand why people do not consider that an absolute highlight. Great balance of bosses too, something tells me GOW 3 set some pretty high expectations that could never be met by newcomers of the franchise no matter what they had released. Ghost of Sparta did hit some pretty high notes with it's story, too just 2 and a half years prior. It kinda feels to me as if this game simply was just overshadowed by the amazing outing of GoW 3 as well as the inclusion of Ghost of Sparta for longtime fans. In time, I'm pretty confident people will learn to really dig this game and what it did with it's gameplay.

I don't get why people thought GOW Ascension was about "Story".
The whole thing of GOW Ascension was about Multiplayer, which was amazing, to be frank.
I played the Multiplayer part more than the Single player part.
The story was good enough for me, though
@@nikoryu-lungma Wholeheartedly agree. It was all about the Multiplayer mode from the start- the most amount of effort went into that. I mean just look at the Troy map - one of the biggest maps they ever made prior to GOW 2018. I run a Discord Server for people who still play the GOW Ascension Multiplayer btw, helping them get to the max level and the such. The link to the server is on my YT profile.
Ascension’s combat really is better than GoW3’s, but it just has a much higher learning curve.
It’s kinda like Doom 2016 vs Eternal. 2016 was a game anyone could be good at by spamming super shotgun. Eternal’s combat system is way better, but requires way more skill to be decent.
I have always loved the chain sound effects and Blades looks from Ascension, but 3's Blades _look_ soooooooo smoooooooooth!

After watching the video, I need to say that I agree with all your points. I personally see it like Batman: Arkham Origins: a great game, but overshadowed by the others (or at least the 4 main games, Ghost of Sparta and Chains of Olympus are slightly below it in my opinion). Also, I'd love to see a GOW 3 Multiplayer, GODDAMNIT that would be fun!

Because honestly once you truly play DMC with style, you only play DMC from that point on. Every other game just becomes DMC-esque to you. Literally all the stylish GOW3 Combo Mad players out there have played DMC4/5 I think.

IKR!? One of the few people who plays god of war in a stylish, skillful and efficient ways possible.
Imo, ascension is the prime example of "one step forward, two steps back"
For every innovation and improvements they did to the combat, they nerfed something useful or added a bad feature along side it
Example being the rage meter, in previous GoW games, you activate it and enter a powered up mode, with a increased damage and a new set of combos that are generally faster and more agressive at the cost of a meter going down that needs to be recharged again
In ascention they intoduced the immolation system that charges the blades (not kratos) when landing hits without getting hit and once filled, will make your attackes more powerful and unlock small hidden extra hits
This system is all right and dandy but is NOT a worthy of a replacement to the actual rage ability
Furthur more, it is actually a smart idea to make special moves do a hidden exta hit when immolation meter is filled, but that should not have made it so that the basic combo is shortened. The main iconic combo from the previous games is chopped in half and locked until you fill the immolation meter, as well as the 3 tiangle combo.
Like that move is completely unaccessable until you unlock fill the immolation meter, making the level 3 blades upgrade almost pointless. which sucks. Its like EA intentionally adding bugs to their games and saying "to remove the bugs, pay for the DLC that contains the patch"
I HOPE that ine day, when technology is progressed more, we get to mod GoW3 so that it would have the upgrades and improvements of the ascension in its combat, or vice versa

yeah I remember GoW ascension gameplay being real fun and BIG, like It brought a lot of new things. I even thought if they ever make a remake of the old games they should include this game's combat mechanics, specially the grapple thing. The bare handed attacks and picking up weapons was new and really fun to do. But If I had to guess, people were just mad that it was yet another prequel and couldn't see past that. That and the fact that a lot of fans seem to just love spamming square and triangle in every single game... when they literally had an entire section of the menu dedicated to telling you all the combos and special moves you could do. Anyway, personally I would a remaster of this one or 3 for the PS5 since they were the best graphics we got for the greek era

Man i want the new game of god of war goes back to the gameplay of the greek saga and for the game to play like ascension but better the same complex combat with combos and stuff but with better arenas more weapons and yeah i will love kratos in egypt i think it will look really unique and at the same time look as the greek saga a little bit

one thing I hate about ascension is that it feels like they spawn enemies just for shits and giggles. and they always spawn a lot of the stronger enemies, and said enemies always end up comboing me since they just don't stop attacking and there's usually not enough room to dodge

Ascension is great. It is like the Arkham Origins of God of War. Great games just hated on by the masses for whatever reason. God of War 3 is still the best game to date in my opinion though. Another thing I like about ascension is the L3 + R3 Super move. It's so cinematic yet short and sweet. It also feels rewarding cause you gotta beat enemies up for it to charge kinda like the rage of sparta in 3.

I wasn't sure what to expect from _Ascension_ since I kinda let the series go for a while and didn't keep up with it, so I saw all the negativity about it. But, I didn't buy into it though.
When I finally played it a couple years ago...I LOVED it. I enjoyed the story, and I enjoy how _fluid_ the basic combat is. Not everything is great, like some of the magic is a little wonky, such as the Ice not working like it should all the time, and I find the parry mechanic much less polished than other _God of War_ games, but the grabbing in mid-air, the way they worked out the motions of the Blades, absolutely superb. It really makes me _feel_ like Kratos when I play.
yo I just discovered something crazy that I'd to share here
so in your video, you mentioned the shield is your favourite so I had to try it out myself and I made some crazy discoveries by accident
now you know how when Kratos does his final triangle slam while in rage, depending on the element used a unique effect will happens?
like the fire having a delayed explosion or the lightning having a.. lighting strike and the soul having an arm pop out for a slash...
so here's what i found out, if you use the shield and do O, O, Triangle with or without rage(with rage to actually see everything)
during the animation of the slam to when kratos is back at rest you can instantly change elements and each of them does their down effect after the same, basically linking final slam with other elements
so you can slam with fire for the delayed explosion, switch to lighting to get the strike the ice for the ice shot and the soul for the hand all at once
the soul is the only element that you can have the arm pop out twice if you switch elements back and forth fast enough
so just do O, O, Triangle will the shield and switch elements right after the slam fast and you'll see the magic happen😅

I loved gow3 and ignored ascension when it came out .. bought it years later and trying gow3 and ascension back to back ascension feels more fluid and modern . Story , no idea but as a game it plays great and looks good to this day . Gow looks good but in a diifferent way . Ascension takes it to another level with lighting and some environments look impressive by any standard even in 2023

Your description of Ascension Kratos feels like the Nero to his older self’s Dante. Sub weapons you can discard to do a bigger attack rather than multiple weapons to swap from, longer and better grab, better rolls, etc.
I used to disliked the combat mechanics meter until got kept playing Ascension. The game do reward you after earning the combos and building the meter. It really made the player even better. Then I when back to GOW3 and my gameplay got *SOOOOO* much better due the difficulty of Ascension combat system. I felt like i put Kratos into the hyperbolic system with Ascension 🤣 and it was worth it.
Yes, I do agreed GOW3 is far better than Ascension I many ways. However, Ascension make you work for it while avoid damage, rolling fast, being patient and utilizing combos.

I always thought this was an underrated game, a lot of flaws. But also a lot of good shit. Lol, I remember the trial of archimedes before the patch to make it easier...easily the most difficult section of any G.O.W. game.

Ascension is certainly more challenging than 3 that's for sure, 3 only had i would say one really difficult part and that was the cerberus and styer section in Hades, whereas as Ascension has many more, especially the trials of arcamides
I remember playing gow 3 first when it came out and it f** blew me away that when ascension came out I played couple hours and couldn't go on cause i felt it was underwhelming compared to 3 ... time has passed .. and most recently I played ascension on rpcs3 and finished it then re-played 3 ... and i have to tell u ... I teared up ... to me ascension was superior in Every way ... graphics, gameplay, combos, parrying, enemies, abilities, boss fights especially the final boss .... I was so sad that it was treated like black sheep while it really is the better game ....
A very good example to demonstrate how good the game was, look at how u fight the medusa in ascension and how much attention to detail put in it ...

I recently played gow 1- 3, ascension & how 2018. I can say that although I thought the quality dipped for ascension I still had a great time with it. I preferred it over gow 2018. I didn't enjoy that

I've came back to this video as i'm playing Ascension right now for the first time and i must say... I hate the combat and i get frustrated in every fight. So let's get with that:
1. Enemies spam attacks constantly and parry doesn't work. And i mean it, idk if it's bugged or what, but it's not that i can't time it right, as actually it has very big time frame, but it just doesn't work. I sit and spam the "X" and it goes off sometimes on the third press. Not to mention, if you parry and enemy misses you (yeah, it happens) Kratos is staggered for eternity and you can't even roll.
2. Staggering enemies with basic combos is almost non-existent. Square, square, triangle does nothing, unless you build your rage meter.
3. In previous games you can cancel your attacks easily with roll or parry. Here Kratos is stuck in animation and i get hit even tho i'm pressing roll or block, even on light attack combos.
4. Some enemies block 90% of attacks including grappling (they even block grappling when they're laying on the ground staggered, nice). Getting them into the air is hard.
5. You don't have all the fun and powerful combos if you don't have rage meter full.
6. Whole rage meter can dissapear after getting hit by one thing.
7. This whole makes the game never ending cycle of not having rage, not having combos and not only getting my ass kicked but also having extremely boring gameplay.
8. Camera sometimes is pure garbage to the point that you can't even see the battleground.
9. Overall bosses are super easy and same goes for bigger enemies. Meanwhile basic meat is fucking me up.
I understand there's a lot of things you can do in this game, but like... I'm going through all PS GOWs right now, i had a great fun and in GOW3 i even played somewhat stylishly like old man Zesty is teaching me, but Ascension's combat is just not fun on the first playthrough, unless you're a damn pro.
The gameplay is awesome. The old formula still works very well. The graphics and animation quality was the best the OG franchise ever had. The violence and execution were extremely baddass and one of the most brutal on the franchise (specially the medusa and elephant guy ones). Seeing Kratos angry and screaming facial expressions while fighting in gameplay was also cool as hell.
It's just the story that was lacking and didn't made much sense. On this regard I put Ascension at the same level of Chain of Olympus.
I would only play this for its gameplay and pvp.

I'm playing gow ascension at the moment and all those things you mentioned are pointless when you play on hard or very hard. Enemies are constantly blocking and tanking every attack you make, so you can't use the hold square or air attacks because you'd get interrupted and hit no matter what.
The only 2 safe attacks are the square combo and the plume of prometheus, the rest of them are a risky gamble that most of the times end up with you taking damage and your meter being drained.
Seriously the meter idea is the one thing I hate the most of this game (even more than the shitty pace and flashbacks abuse), you upgrade the blades and you want to use the new moves you unlocked but no, you have to fill that damned meter to have access to them. And before you say "then get better and learn how to counter and dodge attacks", in theory this is a hack n' slash game, not an rpg. Therefore you could make a mistake because of the type of game we're talking about, but reduce your possibilities based on the attacks you evade is pointless. Imagine if dmc 3 had this system. It would ruin the "style" idea.
I thought ascension was bad cause the community said it was bad and when I rewatched your series aka "stylish" and I said this fucking game is way better than gow 1

The only thing that fkn drives me mad in Ascension is the amount of enemies grab attacks and the rate they are using them with. Also time needed to break loose from the grabs. Ruining the dynamic and pisses me off every time.

I remember trial of Archimedes on hardest difficulty - Gorgons grabbed me over, and over, and over, that was a nightmare. It like i was playing an MK game with my brother, where he finds that one op move and literally do nothing else.

don't understand the hate this game gets. its definitely not the worst God Of War. IMO that crown belongs to Chains of Olympus. True the "Stupid-meter" exists , but its not all that bad. yeah the combat may not be as free flowing as other titles but agree with the good things Zesty mentions in this video. I always thought Kratos was underpowered in this reason by Santa Monica for a reason , he was comparatively weaker , they didn't want the BADASS Kratos that he was in GOW3 per say

I had a ps2, then I got a ps4 and now a ps5. With the new god of war game coming I am planning to play all the older games. I can play god of war 3 and 2018 on ps5. My ps2 don't work anymore but I can emulate ps2 and psp games ( psp games would be a first time for me) on my pc. I have a gtx 1650, so emulating ps2 and psp is no big deal but god of war ascension is unplayable and I never got a ps3. God of war ascension is the only game I haven't played and won't be able to play. Since I live in India I can't even use playstation premium to stream the game, even though I have the delux subscription, because they don't have the infrastructure here yet. I really wish If I could play this game because ascension seems to have the most fun and diverse blades of chaos in the old system. In the past I have bought one console just for one game, like a got a nintendo switch just to play zelda botw, but the switch is the latest nintendo console and it has other good games as well. Buying a ps3 now just doesn't seem worth it. I wish if there was another way through which I can play the game. If you know anything, liked a hacked pc version or something that might run better than please tell me. thank you

I think people have started emulating it ? But i think you also have to KILL the graphics for it to work properly
I did try to kill the graphics a lot and it still wasn't working well. I am gonna play all the other games though, and watching your Stylishtic gameplay 😅 definitely helped me to fill that space a little. Now I can get started with God of war chains of Olympus. (Since I wanted to do this in chronological order).
I also have gtx 1650 laptop with ryzen 5 5600h and gow ascension works amazing on rpcs3 you could try that
Zesty….. gow 3 came out before ascension, how do you expect everything to be the best like….. its like saying gow 2 is worse than 3 only for what it is, well with every entry the developers improve or add more/other stuff to the games

I've been trying so hard to love Ascension. It has the best sounding blades, the grapple mechanic is awesome, and god those graphics. I just can't stand so many classic combos being locked behind the rage system. This game was one step forward 2 steps back for me. It had so many cool innovations but every one of them theres something like the dodge or parry system or everything having to do with the rage system. Like I can respect it being like a Doom Eternal situation where they don't want hardcore players to destroy on the new game and have to climb the skill gap again but the one thing I can't ever excuse is locking the combos behind rage.

@@ExtremeGameplays1 yeah I know you don't make the game or anything like that lol. I like that its unique but I just don't like that it takes stuff away from you that you always used to have. Like its already a risk to use those heavy combos because they're slow and they were already always a risk to use. Now when you use those heavy combos it leaves you somewhat vulnerable as it did in the past but now that makes it where you can't use them.
@@ExtremeGameplays1 I see a lot of different perspectives on this game but I'd say I'm mostly somewhere in the middle. Its like I love a lot of the new mechanics that the game doesn't get enough credit for but can't get past it locking things you used to always have behind the rage.
