I’ve had my 2 Addi’s for about 10 years. 8 years ago, I took my King sized Addi apart. This is so similar to how my husband and I took mine apart. That sticky stuff is a grease needed for the machine. If it’s cleaned off, which we did, we used a silicone spray…. Just a small amount. I had the digital counter that wouldn’t work correctly, so I clipped off the wires 😂. I just purchased a small digital counter for my thumb. Back when I bought my King and regular Addi Express, they were both digital counters. My little Addi has never had any problems. I have a fun collection of circular knitting machines. I have the Sentro, a vintage Icord knitting machine, and a few other crafter toy knitting machines. One that I have is all in Chinese (packaging). I wish there was a larger King Sized Addi. I feel the King is great for children and people with small heads. I’m always checking for a bigger one, but no luck. Great job with this video!!! I watch your video uploaded after you did this one and it runs like a dream!!!! ❤❤❤

Hey hun, thanks for doing a video on this. The Addi isn't hard to clean after you do it the first, but that first time can be nerve racking. I do have to say though, you may want to take your machine apart again and take off all the lithium grease. I know a lot of people say it is okay to use that, I even used it the first time I cleaned my Addi. I noticed the smell as I applied it to my machine, so I did some research. Lithium grease is made from fossil fuels (petroleum) the same as vaseline. It will break down the plastic and the gears. The safest thing to use on your machine is Silicone, which is actually made from quartz ore. Not only does it protect better but leaves a non sticky lubrication that won't accumulate dust and fibers. You are very welcome. I have a video that I posted not to long ago about another thing I did with the handle using tin foil. Check it out cause I promise you… it works! 🥰
Great job. You are great at teaching and at keeping morale high while taking apart our beloved Addi. I watch “Gear one and 2”. He also made a gear I wanted to buy. but when I asked the group, they informed me the only other metal gear would have to be (Gold) because of the friction on a plastic machine. Because he had a made a metal gear he could use oil and Vaseline (an oil by product) but it will destroy other parts of our beloved Addi “a plastic machine”. I watched and tried Diane plastic gear video and it did help. There are several videos on You Tube about the type of lubricant that are safe for plastic. These have been tried and found to be safe. One being ‘White Lithium Grease’. Your video and “Addi gear1 & 2”, all 3 helped me understand much more how to put machine back together (with no extra screws). I had some problems trying to follow Diane’s putting the Addi back together Also; you pointing out that the Addi’s needles has to be extend beyond the top of the “yarn guide” to avoid dropped stitches. This is a brilliant discovery. I love your video and have found so many helpful suggestions, that is one reason I do not want anything to happen to your Addi. I was amazed at the amount of lint and dust on your gear itself. Vaseline is a byproduct of petroleum, petroleum and hard plastic are not friends, I would have used silicone oil that is friendly with plastics.
Thank you for all that info. I bought the white lithium grease. I hope that small amount of vasiline didn’t already do damage. I’m taking it apart tomorrow !
Thank you for doing this video. Motivated me take my machine apart and give it a good clean. Hoping I have better luck with catching all my stitches. Also found out why my handle always sounded like something was in it, extra screw just sitting inside when I took it off. Explains why I would see fine black plastic once and a while popping out the top, along with constant rattle sound. It’s my first/only machine and always thought I was supposed to sound like that 😳
Thank you for this great video, I have watched several videos that left out vital hints that make it easier to understand how to put it together. Now, I am no longer chicken to clean my machine.
Leigh, if I can do it, YOU can do it! Lol!! Watch a section and follow it, then watch the next section and follow it, but watch it all first so you don’t do the mistakes I did! Hahahahahaha
I used a black sharpie and marked the edge where the 3 black needles went. Also next time, use small cups to put your different screws in. Keeps them together. But you did good!!

@@koalaknitsandknacksaddicrochet I am thankful for your video! Without RUclips videos, I would have no idea that the machines need cleaning and lubrication! Nothing from Addi mentions this.
Hi Shelly, thank you for your great video on how to clean the Addi. I followed along with you (going back and forth many times), but eventually got it all back together. I note that you mentioned skipped stitches and therefore you wanted to bring the needles closer to the yarn feeder. Now I've had my machine for about 4 years and have never pulled it apart until today. On putting it back together, I noticed that there was a little rubber square attached on the panel where the row counter is situated. I've never had a problem with dropped stitches, so I'm wondering if the manufacturer made an additional correction and glued this bit of rubber near the row counter. I don't know how to attach a pic on here, but can show you if someone can tell me how to attach a pic. I've seen a few Addi's pulled apart on RUclips, but none have had the extra little rubber square attached. I have the version you do, with the manual row counter. Thank you again for taking the plunge to do maintenance on your Addi machine. I'm sure this video will be invaluable to all of us. After a clean and a grease, my Addi is running smoothly.
@@kamilasmith I made this video the first time I took my machine apart so if I were to do another video I am sure it would be better all around! Haha! Thanks for persevering. I have never seen a rubber piece. That is very interesting. Good to know. Sorry, but you cannot send a picture in RUclips. I’m glad your machine is running well.
🤣🤣🤣🤣Oh pandemonium! I got my machine apart OK, but my row counter was actually wired to the chassis of the the machine and when I lifted the top off the wires came off so I don't have a counter now, 😔 however, I'll get my husband to solder the wires back on when I take it apart again when I get the dielectric silicone grease, I could only get the silicone spray. Then putting it back together again it sure was a challenge, it certainly got the brain working, then I ended up with spare screws, even though I had them all in order they still got missed so I had to take the bottom off again and screw the middle part down then put the base back on, phew! By the time I take it apart the second time I'll be an expert almost, and I noticed there was a bit of a difference with your machine compared to mine, with the handle and the row counter. I got it altogether again even if it took me half a day and the loss of some hair🤣🤣🤣🤣, I made a little gasket for the handle out of aluminium foil like you suggested and there's no more wobble in the handle and she runs pretty good now although the red needle cage (?) Rattles somewhat but I'll look at that when I open her up again. Once again thank you for being brave for the rest of us and thank you for sharing your video. Cheers from Australia!

When the grease arrives I'll be opening it up again, now that I've located the equipment, I'll solder the wires back on. I'm glad I opened the addi though, because I've been knitting a bunch of beanies on it with my hand spun yarn and it was very mucky inside, the addi did a wonderful job of knitting my hand spun, I'll be doing more on it, I make them for the homeless and for the oncology department for people going through chemo. Once again thank you for the video, I used it to help me put it back together again. Cheers from Australia!
Thanks a lot! So, vaseline was only greasing stuff you put in there? And the only thing needs to be greased ir the back of the needle? How often do you use your machine? I got my few days ago, I would like to estimate how much time I can fork with it without opening up. Was the dirt inside sticky or just clumps of dry fiber? Thanks again a lot!
I have never used compressed air so I can’t speak to it but I have heard others have. The thing is you need to still grease it when it’s sounding like it’s needed and that means taking your machine apart anyways. So you may as well clean it. White Lithium Grease.
@koalaknitsandknacksaddicrochet I used Caron Simply Soft and Premier Just One Pound. I used the hand crank. I made 60 + hats for charity in under a month. I was very careful with the crank. As gentle as possible.
So it was replaced by Amazon. Now the handle broke in the same place. I think I need to just replace the crank handle. Where have you all purchased parts? I'm thinking about using a black handle that sticks out that I saw on an Etsy shop. Is that a good idea?
@koalaknitsandknacksaddicrochet I did mine as well. But it a pain putting back together. But this video help me as well. It still not 100 percent back yet. But still love them. Thank you again.

When I screwed the inside pieces back on I pushed the sides closer together before tightening the screw. The score may have been loose when assembled at the factory so tightening it seemed to help ever so slightly but I’m convinced it made a difference.
For some reason I can’t like this video so I wanted to put my “like” here. Just bought an addy and it’s problematic right out of the box. Wondering if I shouldn’t make the adjustments now before I get frustrated and give up. Thanks.
I would it take it apart if you just got it. If you are sure that it is not just the learning curve that you need to get through then send it back. I honestly feel that people think machines are faulty and send them back when really they just need to learn how to use it. Proper yarn is the key. Go buy Bernat “PREMIUM”, Caron Latte Cakes or Heartland yarn and try that till you figure out what your machine likes and what tension and speed works well. If you don’t have all 3 things correct - especially the yarn, you will tuck stitches and think your machine is junk when really it isn’t. Don’t take a new machine apart. That is my suggestion.
@@knittingnana2939 since doing this video I realized the reason my machine was skipping was because there were broken threads on the gold ring inside the barrel. Rather than get a replacement part, I bought a new machine.

This whole video makes me doubt the quality of the machine. I chose Addi because I love their knitting needles, but the whole thing is very rickety. The manual is poor. There is no maintenance information. I have made 60 hats so far for a charity project, but I am not impressed. Today my handle just got loose, and I have no idea why. I have a love/hate relationship with it. Not up to the standards I expected from Addi.

Holy Moly!!!! I have to go take all my Addis apart!!! Crazy stuff!!! Take good care!
Hahahaha
@@koalaknitsandknacksaddicrochet keep you different screws separated and in order. Good luck but I'm sure you will be fine
It’s my first/only machine and always thought I was supposed to sound like that 😳
Way to go! It’s great that you cleaned it! Thanks for watching and for trusting me! 😂🥰
Thank you for this great video, I have watched several videos that left out vital hints that make it easier to understand how to put it together. Now, I am no longer chicken to clean my machine.
Awesome! Show us pictures in the FB group of how dirty it was and then how clean it is! I could stare at mine all day! Lol
Wow , how brave to you have to be. Bravo. Thank you so much. I hope when I need to take my machine apart I can fine this video. Ann from Va.

LOL, you're a brave lady taking that apart ❤ 😊
Took one for the team!! Lol
So glad it worked!
Your machine looks great, well done, not sure I’m brave enough yet, maybe I’ll watch your video a few more times 😂
Leigh, if I can do it, YOU can do it! Lol!! Watch a section and follow it, then watch the next section and follow it, but watch it all first so you don’t do the mistakes I did! Hahahahahaha
@@koalaknitsandknacksaddicrochet thank you, I will try 🤞😀
I used a black sharpie and marked the edge where the 3 black needles went. Also next time, use small cups to put your different screws in. Keeps them together. But you did good!!
Thank you! 🥰
Thank you so much for recording your cleaning of the Addi.
Your welcome. It was the first time I took it apart. I’m much better at it now! Lol
very helpful and I'll watch it again when I get up the courage to do the same
You got this! 😊
Thanks for this. I had taken apart and fixed my Jamit 40 needle machine but I am intimidated to have to take apart my Addi. Thankfully I haven’t had mine super long but I’m definitely coming back to this video if I do
Awesome! Except make sure you line up the red thing right. I was one over! Now I gotta change it! Oh well…..at least I’m a pro now!
Thank you for the video, you were so brave! I'm going to look at cleaning mine now. I think I was holding my breath until you finished😄😄. What a great idea putting little gaskets in behind the handle I'll do that also except I'll have to improvise, I can find any thin plastic like what you had. Cheers from Australia!
Don’t use the plastic….. look on my channel for the video that is a quick handle fix. It’s 100% better.
@@koalaknitsandknacksaddicrochet oh OK I'll look at you're other one and see what you did, I've been using my hand spun so I reckon mine will be quite mucky. Cheers from Australia!
@@koalaknitsandknacksaddicrochet oh OK I will watch the other video thank you. Cheers!
Great video if a bit nerve wracking. Methodical removal in order is the way to go. The mechanics and engineers in my family all did the same but having the video is a dandy improvement.
Great video. Wonder how many crafters threw out their machines when they thought they were broken but, in fact, were just "gunked-up?" 🤣
That would be a mistake! 😢
@@koalaknitsandknacksaddicrochet but they should tell owners that the machine needs maintenance, and they should explain how.
@ that’s out of my hands. Sorry.
I also don’t think they need to be maintained that often. I’m not sure why yours broke.
I do have a video on my channel for how to take it apart and clean it. Hope that helps. Good luck! 🥰
@@koalaknitsandknacksaddicrochet I am thankful for your video! Without RUclips videos, I would have no idea that the machines need cleaning and lubrication! Nothing from Addi mentions this.
@ it is likely because they don’t think it’s necessary. Many people disagree with cleaning it.
I’m not one of those people.
Oh my! You sure had a challenge! So sorry that your counter broke…. that is sad! I made this video the first time I took it apart. I think I mentioned that in the video.
Now I can do it with no problem! Practice makes perfect!
Best of luck!! 🥰
@@koalaknitsandknacksaddicrochet thank you for a reply, I'm still laughing at myself, that's what I get for being a smarty pants😆.
Amazing. Going to do this tomorrow. Thank you.
Have fun!
You made me laugh doing it for the team was classic
Hahahahaha! Well the job got done and I can’t believe I did it! 🥰
I'm so happy you showed this!💜
I’m so happy your happy! Me too! 🥰
I can't take mine apart because I have 1 screw that is all chewed up. 😥
There’s gotta be a way. Google “how to remove a screw that’s been stripped”. See what you get.
Great idea. Thanks. I'll try that!💜
Thank you for such a helpful video.
Your very welcome 😊
Thanks a lot! So, vaseline was only greasing stuff you put in there? And the only thing needs to be greased ir the back of the needle? How often do you use your machine? I got my few days ago, I would like to estimate how much time I can fork with it without opening up. Was the dirt inside sticky or just clumps of dry fiber? Thanks again a lot!
I do not use Vaseline anymore. I use White Lithium Grease. A couple times a year is all I do and I use my machine every day.
Great job. Thank you for sharing.
Thank you and your welcome! Have fun cleaning yours! 🥰

I got so nervous just watching you do it 😮I would be nervous because I am sure I can’t do it by myself 😢
Lol! I was nervous as well but it had to be done and it made a difference.
You can do it! 😍
Thank you. Will give it a go too.
Excellent! Post in my group some pictures of how dirty your machine was! Lol
What did you clean the machine with ? Thanks for sharing.
Sorry, my comments are coming in two places and I am missing some.
I used water and a light squirt of Dawn dish detergent.
Could using compressed air in a can be helpful for cleaning? What can be used to lubricate the parts that won’t damage?
I have never used compressed air so I can’t speak to it but I have heard others have. The thing is you need to still grease it when it’s sounding like it’s needed and that means taking your machine apart anyways. So
you may as well clean it.
White Lithium Grease.
Love your videos
Thank you very much! id love to have you join my FB group as well, if you havent already done so. Its under the same name.

Does Addi have an official manual for maintenance and repair? I just replaced my machine that broke in less than one month.
@@irenesupica5571 not that I am aware of.
What broke on it? What kind of yarn are you using on it? Do you use a drill?
@koalaknitsandknacksaddicrochet I used Caron Simply Soft and Premier Just One Pound. I used the hand crank. I made 60 + hats for charity in under a month. I was very careful with the crank. As gentle as possible.
@ awe that is to bad. Maybe contact the seller. It should definitely not be broken if that’s how you used it.
So it was replaced by Amazon. Now the handle broke in the same place. I think I need to just replace the crank handle. Where have you all purchased parts? I'm thinking about using a black handle that sticks out that I saw on an Etsy shop. Is that a good idea?
Do you have a video for the 22 as well?
No I don’t but my machine needs to be cleaned so I will try and do it this month sometime.
@koalaknitsandknacksaddicrochet I did mine as well. But it a pain putting back together. But this video help me as well. It still not 100 percent back yet. But still love them. Thank you again.
I love your videos. Thank you for being so adventurous. By the way I am from Brisbane Australia and love our Aussie Koalas. Where does your name come from ?
Thank you!
I found a very cute stuffed Koala in a store and bought it cause I loved it. Figured it would make a great mascot! That’s where it came from! Haha
One day I’d love to see one in real. Oh to be able to go to Australia! 🥰
I love your videos. I also love koalas 😂
I still don't get how you made the guide closer. Can you explain please? Thank you 😊
When I screwed the inside pieces back on I pushed the sides closer together before tightening the screw. The score may have been loose when assembled at the factory so tightening it seemed to help ever so slightly but I’m convinced it made a difference.
@@koalaknitsandknacksaddicrochet Thank you for explaining. I will be looking to do the same to my addi.
I hope it works for you. I am having trouble with my handle grinding again. Just in one spot. So frustrating!

I honestly feel that people think machines are faulty and send them back when really they just need to
learn how to use it.
Mine is skipping terribly so I am going to have to do this but I am going to get lithium grease for the pins and not Vaseline.
@@knittingnana2939 since doing this video I realized the reason my machine was skipping was because there were broken threads on the gold ring inside the barrel. Rather than get a replacement part, I bought a new machine.
@@koalaknitsandknacksaddicrochet well I am going to try it anyway. If I have to get a new one, I will. I have used this one a lot.

@@irenesupica5571 I’m sorry if I added to your doubt in any way.
I absolutely love my Addi’s and I think they are great quality but they are just a plastic machine. There will be maintenance needed along the way.
