Hi Scotty. I live in Katy, Texas near Houston and I have a torque converter issue on my 2011 Toyota Tacoma. I went to the Toyota Dealership and it's priced at around 2,800.00 to fix. I would like to contact you if you are interested in fixing and video taping it for RUclips. I do not have FB , Twitter, or Instagram. My email is ArielMJrToyoMR2@aol com if you will like to contact me.
Hi Scotty please explain how my family has a 2004 V6 Chevy Malibu with 250,000 miles with the original engine & transmission
Scotty Kilmer those hood struts are $13 each on Rock auto
Hi Scotty, I live in Virginia and I was thinking about buying a Subaru BRZ or Scion Frs for daily driving, what di you think about those? Are they reliable for everyday driving?
Scotty Kilmer Hi Scott, I have a 2013 Avalon with 75000. Should I get rid of it?
I have a 2001 Avalon with 412k miles on the original engine. I purchased it when it had 250k. I had a long commute before the pandemic. (200 miles round trip 5 days a week). Best car I ever owned!!! Im keeping it for as long as I can. I love my Avalon. 💖
About to pick one up with 370k miles for a cheap commuter. Wish me luck
I got 319k on my 2004 Avalon xls
2 years ago, wife lucked into an 03 Avalon, 88k miles. I drove it once, then scoured local used car listings for nearly a year, trying to find one for me. Finally found an 01 Avalon, 62k miles. Best driving cars we've ever owned.
Dave, off the cuff question... Does your 2001 avalon have a fuel tube flap?
@@acw2237 Not sure - what is a fuel tube flap? If you mean a spring-loaded trap-door like thing that a fuel nozzle pushes out of the way, nope, it's the older type with just a screw-on gas cap that covers the opening for the nozzle.
@@davegehman6581
Yes.. That's what I meant. Thanks..
My 2000 Avalon is about to hit 185k miles. The only problem I’m experiencing now is the shift solenoid p0773. Other than that, great car
Same here. Got the 98 Avalon XLS. Great car. Wife barely drives it. Maybe 110k on it. Smooth, powerful and rides great. It has all the bells and whistles. That six cylinder purrs and runs like a Swiss watch.
my 1996 Avalon has 415,000 miles and drives much like a new car after I rebuilt the suspension. Also, the hood struts are under $30 om rockauto or close to free at the junkyard.
Junkyard is where i got my hood struts. Not a huge deal whenever they break like some make it out to be
Caayydenn you're right I've replaced those strut holders... Brand new for $40 bucks!
How much are the actual struts, Im looking to replace my toyota corolla 2001 struts, man it drives so bumpy, which makes me it hate driving it.
@@superbros1690 Just Google the struts for that car. Might not want to buy the OEM ones because of the price but theres KYB struts out there that work good for way less than dealer prices
@@caayydenn Yea but they are too expensive. Kyb is like $100 each strut. My car is only worth like 700. I guess its not worth the repair.
One of these days I'm going to have a nightmare that some dude suddenly hops out of the trunk of a car and attacks me while yelling about Chrysler's being endless money pits.
I own a 1996 Toyota Avalon with over 200 thousand miles on it. Trust me, the 1995 to 1999 Toyota Avalon is the BEST Toyota of the mid to late nineties. Bullet proof motor with a non-interference engine. The BEST of both worlds. Thank you for posting Scotty!
My old neighbor had a '95 Avalon in really great shape. Well over 200k miles. She loved that car and drove it to work and school 5 days a week.
I have a 96 and I drive her like an F1 car every day. Had it for 3 years. Only problem was the valve cover gaskets and the knock sensors. Both of which were bad when I bought it. Other that that 2 CV axles. Literally bulletproof. Love it.
99 with 289,000. You are so right!
I own a '99 with 175k. Bought it a year and a half ago. Replaced one wheel bearing and the motor mounts. Great car, gets on it surprisingly well and 24 ish miles to the gallon, I'm gonna keep it.

i did just this and got a 2007 camry, a few videos later he says 2007 camry is the worst, no joke.

I have a 2011 Toyota Avalon limited. Beautiful car, great value. Has same engine and features a Lexus in same year would have for a fraction of the cost. More videos of Avalons please Scotty....
I got a 2010
I bought hood supports for $30.00 a set. Modified the bracket that hold the wiring harness just a bit and clipped them on. Still working fine after 6 years
Yes, Scotty is truth with some 3.5 V6 VVT-i oil leak issues. My wife's 2008 Highlander had the rear bank VVT-i line replaced in late 2010 by dealer (TSB item) because a small rubber hose in VVT-i line could rupture and leak/dump the oil. Toyota covered it via a T-SB. Going strong still, but Toyota fixed 2009 and later Highlanders (and some other models) with an all metal VVT-i line. Thinking of finding a Scotty Kilmer clone here in SW Florida and having him replace my wife's with the all metal upgrade version for extra safety.
Thanks Scotty for finally mentioning the Avalon I have 2003 xls 200+ miles
THANK YOU THANK YOU, THANK YOU, for talking about the Avalon! I watch almost all of your videos and the Avalon is a VERY RARE subject for you to discuss. Please talk MORE about the AVALONS! For instance, you (GENERALLY) mentioned in this video that the 2005-16 VVTI Avalon oil leaks. First, (FYI) I THINK that the leak issue is a 2gr-fe V6 issue & NOT just an Avalon issue so it effects Siennas and Camrys with that V-6 engine. I have an 08 and it is my understanding that the leaks are almost always in the (recalled at one time) RUBBER PORTION of the VVTI oil pipe which was replaced with an ALL metal one during a later year (pipe was dentical to the pipe that was ALWAYS used in es350s) . As a result, I have replaced my VVTI oil pipe with an all metal line (it was challenging, to say the least). You could do a detailed video on this and all other kinds of Avalon potential VVTI oil leaks (and potential preventative fixes) subject matter. Am I right that the main VVTI oil leak issue is with the recalled oil pipe? If it is in other VVTI areas, I would appreciate any info on those areas too. Regardless, Thanks for the Avalon video. I would love videos on the 3rd generation Avalon.
Fascinating, and I 100% agree. But I think the problem is Scotty never talks about them because he almost never sees them! Lol. They sold alot less of them, and the vast majority of people who owned them were over 60. Considering how reliable they are it wouldn't surprise me if Scotty hasn't spent allot of time with them because he never has customers that need to bring them in. As a general rule I say just be extra cautious inspecting any Toyota after 2005.
Awesome video scotty! My 98 Avalon keeps running even though the rest of the car especially the door handles are falling apart! Eye sore especially when im cruising through Houston at 90 mph like a hot knife through butter! The haters will hate, but as for the avalon, oil changes and fuel are all she needs
Scotty giving my avalon a thumbs up has made my entire day
I honestly like his shows..he gives you the unfiltered versions and basically what we all say when no one is around. He is extremely knowledgeable about cars that's for sure
I have a 96 and I drive her like an F1 car every day. Had it for 3 years. Only problem was the valve cover gaskets and the knock sensors. Both of which were bad when I bought it. Other that that 2 CV axles. Literally bulletproof. Love it. BEST CAR IVE EVER OWNED.
I've had one of these, 1997 Avalon XLS 296k miles. Cheap to buy, cheap maintenance.
This car is almost indestructible. "Made out of cast iron" as we say.
Lol. I actually bought a 1997 Avalon with 298k miles for $1200. Seller had all receipts & took very good care of it. Drove it to 345k when trans started dying. Yet it STILL kept running. Toyota 4 life.
@ yeah, actually that was the reason why I sold mine - trans started to die, no matter how often did I change oil, filters, etc. But an interesting thing - it still runs, even with dying trans. New owner told me that he won't fix anything until it dies completely. So even with lagging gearbox that guy drives this fuckin avalon for over a year. Incredible.
Scotty, I have that same Avalon! 1999 XL, and my dad bought it brand new in New Jersey, and it spent its first 11 years there, and has no rust (because of the extra care that was taken). I had it in North Carolina for 3 years, and now in Alabama for a few years! It my daily driver and drive it regularly on highway trips back to NC, Atlanta, and even made two trips to Dallas Texas! I do my own servicing on it, and use Mid grade Top Tear Gasoline, and get around 28/29 MPG on the highway, if I don't push her! It still has the Original A/C compressor (which blows cold), the original Rack (that has never leaked), and even the Original Alternator. The car has 280k miles, and I have the original window sticker, and all prior maintenance records! I use Pennzoil Platinum Full Synthetic Oil, and A little Marvel Mystery Oil, and an oil additive, and fuel enhancer! I can't say enough bout how great a car these Avalon's can be (with proper care)! Keep up the good work Scotty!!
L,C Footman. You have a great dad, it save you thousands of $ in car payments. I also do most of the maintenance and this Toyotas just go on forever. Wonderful story.
Thank you sir, although I do have my eyes on a New Avalon Touring!!
The 3.5 oil leaks are the vvti return line and oil cooler line. Both made of rubber . This problem is fixed in 2010 with metal lines
That's is one reason why my research pointed me to the 2012.
@@robertweber3140 Can't go wrong with that one!
@@oceanzhu1002, I'm loving it!
The 2GRFE engine of the next generation Avalon had a rubber oil line enabling the VVT to work, but it was replaced by a metal line in 2010 and later models, which got rid of the catastrophic oil leak problems. Even in the pre-2010 VVT Avalon (and other 2GRFE Toyotas/Lexuses) there was a TSB to replace the rubber oil line--but it was not a recall so it may not have been done if you pick up a used one.
Spot on James. Just picked up b a 2012

I liked the few Avalons of that body style that had the bench seat and column shifter. Awesome cars with plenty of power and decent MPG.
2004 Avalon. Different iteration. Going to have the front motor mount and torque mount replaced tomorrow with OEM parts I obtained. Also will have AT205 sprayed on all the rubber underneath the car. First "problems" with the car. 110,000 miles. It will outlive me. Father and then son got 243,000 miles on his/their model. That one went through a few wrecks and still ran.

I still have my '99 Avalon, V6, 3.0L. It has 220K miles, runs great!! I get 28 MPG on the freeway. The only thing that failed was the starter (when the car was 6 years old). The original brakes went 125K miles before needing replacement. Otherwise, normal maintenance on this car. At this point in time, I have a minor oil leak (probably the CAM seals). I just added the ATP AT-205 Re-Seal - we'll see if that stops the leak. The paint on the hood has been flaking slowly but nothing like other 10 year old cars I have seen. My car also has the Bench Seat option - very nice and roomy!! Great visibility out of all windows!!! My only issue is the "step down" to get in the car and the seat position which is not the best for a bad lower back. Long drives are tough for me. But my passengers love the ride!! So for that reason only, I am looking for second vehicle; an SUV or something were I can have a closer to 90 degree seat position (kinda like the old truck seats). Car shopping has been tough. Many of the new SUVs seem to have the same issues for me - lack of a standard V6 option that gets respectable gas mileage, not having to duck down to be able to see out the front window, comfortable seats, etc. The search continues. BUT... I will never part with the Avalon... it will be my short drive car. Thanks for the great review on the Avalon!!!
I have a 2007 avalon limited just about to hit 140k miles, running like new still
Christopher La Torre You have the 2GR-FE. My 2008 Lexus has the same engine and it has 246,000 and doesn’t skip a beat!

My Mom had a 95 Avalon until just past 330,000 miles. They are prone to power steering leaks, as well as the flex pipe in front of the catalytic converter rusting out. It's part of the cat so the whole thing has to be replaced. The v6 Camry had 2 pieces and the flex pipe was replaceable. Hers needed both fixed, but everything else on the car was bulletproof. Other than normal wear items, a single O2 sensor, coolant reservoir, and and a vacuum switching valve it was all original. Even the struts were original at 330k.

CAMRY SHMAMRY! I bought a white 1999 Avalon XLS in 2004, and never looked back, except last year in April when I sold it to buy a white 1999 Avalon XLS with a sunroof. Late 90's Avalon is more car for the money, and costs less on the market than a late 90's Camry V6. No brainer. 236K on the old Avalon when sold, 264K on the new one now, and no slowing down to 300K...
01 avalon here. 190k on it. Had to swap both vvt solenoids and do some suspension work. Other than that it is the best car I've driven let alone owned.
May I ask what those repairs cost ya?
@@jenncrockett4070 I did it my self. Very easy fix. Parts were about 80 dollars each
Had a problem with my 08 Touring. Put in some Blue Devil power steering stop leak, and it's been good going even after 20k miles. Coming up to 175k miles and it's absolutsly still a beautiful ride. I get compliments on it and feel like it drives even better than some newer makes
I own a 97 Avalon XLS and its in almost perfect condition. It has the check engine code for the gas cap. But apart from that its perfect.
I just sold my 96 slx. It had that same check engine light issue. Unfortunately Toyota stopped making the leak sensor pump and, charcoal canister years ago. It doesn't seem to take away from the performance at all. The only issue that I had related to gas tank was the filler tube. Over time they tend rust but, it's exposed to the elements and, they use cheap paint anyway. Get some black tape to put over the check engine light and, motor on!!!lol!!!
Thank you so much for covering this car Scotty! I remember commenting a while back hoping you would see and cover and and you did thank you! My 99 Avalon xls got it for 700 with the registration good till December and we got it back in August. Runs like a dream. Recently switched the thermostat it was over heating and that fixed it. I bought a timing kit and water pump with pulleys and seals. The pump and belt had actually been recently replaced but the belt had oil on it because all the cam seals went bad but those came in the kit so we used the new belt and on gonna resell the water pump since the pump on it was an asin pump and was just replaced so just stuck with OEM definetly will check the power steering rack too. But runs like a clock starts everytime. And I'm gonna get a new starter just for peace of mind. Thank you again scotty!
Also we bought it with 234k miles and again for 700 a total steal!
I bought my 99 Toyota Avalon in 07 and it’s still running strong
I got a 2000 Avalon XLS with 233k miles no issues no leaks no problems at all and its still runs like a champ
@4:15 look at how simple and clean that looks. What a pleasure that engine compartment must be to work in.
I have a '98 Toyota Camry had a steering rack problem, when I bought it (in 2003). I don't remember what the issue was, except it had something to do with having to turn the steering wheel further than normal(??) or something along those lines. Fortunately, I know an honest and very knowledgeable mechanic, just like you, who is actually a Toyota specialist. Rather than doing what Toyota's books say, by replacing the entire steering rack with a new AU$2000 one, the mechanic did something using two hose clamps and some sheet metal (I think?). He tightened it all up and told me to get a wheel alignment.
Sixteen years later, and I still haven't needed to replace the steering rack! lol
Wow that's incredible! Going through a similar issues with my '99 ES300.
Wish I knew how to do your crazy method.

Me too. I only recently found out what a steering rack actually is. lol
When buying a used car, you got to look at the brand, the model, and the year to see if you are getting a good car... but imagine getting the car when it was new, and the history of that particular vehicle hasn't been discovered yet, it's kinda stressful getting a new car.
Moral of the story: never buy a new car. Wait for a few years and see if any known issues come up. Not only is it safer, its cheaper.
Wow. I've recently been really looking at a 2005-9 series Avalon. Id love a Touring trim in Burgundy. I saw another RUclips guy say the oil problem was a pipe that leaks (looks like it's between the firewall and the engine on the passenger side) and that Toyota issued a recall on it. My father had a 2001 and although the ride is kind of boatie mc boatface (reminds me of the 60s American land yachts) it's been a good car. Maybe you could do a more in-depth video on that series of Avalons, they look beautiful and are not too expensive! Love, love, love your show Scotty, you're what's truly great about RUclips, thank you for your good work! 👍

I’ve realized any non major model from Chevy always has issues.
The nice thing about the old cressida (as well as any luxury car from the 80s & early 90s) were the comfortable cloth pillow top seats. Now cloth seat are made out of recycled plastic bottles and are rock hard.
Scotty nailed it with this video. SMART people drive a 1995 to 1999 Toyota Avalon. And that's a FACT. I am the second owner of a 1996 Toyota Avalon XL that i bought in Feb 2001. I still own it and it is my daily driver.

While it has all the records I took my son with his $5000 scan tool, only 4 codes; 2 for engine sensors (history), and 2 for thd A/C, the latter being sensors that indicate faulty if tested in the shade.
I was aware of the Toyita Owners Forum about tge VVT-I tube and wrote you about three months ago, so thanks for listening. I learned from my independent mechanic that the VVT-I tube (which was a design issue) is all metal for 2011 and 2012, so I'm safe there, Also checked the power steering fluid and it was full and clean, no staining.
The only thing I did not like but performed immediately was a tranny "drain n fill" and radiotir glush; both still had original fluids. Used Valvolene Power Max and HOT coolant.
Looks like I'm set fir 50k miles thanks to your vids, Toyota Owners forum and Carcomplaints, com. Doing my research ihas been rewarding
The 2019 and up avalon’s are hideous with those giant gaping grilles
KHLegend I ended up getting a 2019 Camry 4cyl.
I love that car but I miss my 05 corolla that was paid off lol
I dont know why they keep it up, when everyone hates their grille designs.🤷♂️
It looks beautiful
Way too big
The new Avalon looks like it's wearing gigantic braces.
The later Avalons are model twins for the Lexus ES 350. I have a 2015 that I bought used and it is a fabulous car. It also has the same Toyota 2GR-FE engine as our '08 Sienna (133k mi), and we've (so far) had no VVT issues. I did just replace the steering rack in the Sienna; did it myself and saved about $800. Not an easy job though... 😃
I'm waiting for that day, when Scotty opens the trunk of one of his clients and finds a weird surprise that takes his words away lol.
LOL
Like what a blow up doll? ,,,🤣
Hahahahahhaaa!!!!
I fixed a solonoid inside the transmission on one of these. I had to take the valve body off. There was a ton of tiny pipes that snaked over and under each other. I made a pseudo valve body out of a piece of cardboard and carefully replicated the tangled mess by transferring one pipe at a time. I put it all together, poured the oil back in and stood back, arms akimbo and admired my job. Then I spied a tiny spring on the floor and my heart sank. I carefully took everything apart again and searched for where the spring might have fallen out of. I went to jump in my car to go get help and pulled the keys out of my pocket. Tangled in my key ring was a broken pen with the clicker spring missing.
I just asked the wife to hold the hood open for me while I perform routine maintenance😁
On your car????
Oh my!
What!!!?? How could you allow her to leave the damn kitchen??
I had my wife sat on pry bar when I switch rear spring . saved my day
1999 toyota avalon XLS class, still since senior year of highschool. Two years still going strong
I love my 2016 Toyota Avalon Touring and I’m not an old man. Comfortable, fast, reliable, and great looking. Gonna drive it til it dies which will be a long time 😂
I've got a 2015 touring edition, black on black on slate black! I love it, it's the best car I've ever owned!
I was so hurt when my 98 Avalon was destroyed by an oak tree in '17. I kept the engine in hopes of finding a decent body. Got a '09 avalon now, thankfully, I haven't run into the VVT issue, hopefully I never do.
I love my 07 Avalon, great cars
lol I'm using a big dowel rod for my 1994 Camry. 180,000 miles and still runs great.
i bought hood struts to my -92 camry, even that i hadnt look there that often. Says plenty about its owner
Did the same for an 85 Cressida. However a car be so equipped, I would like for its features to work.
You can get eBay's for $25🤷
Funny I just bought a 1999 Toyota Avalon with 100,000 miles on it. She's got hail damage but she runs like a top. I get 22-23 MPG because I use it to drive to work each morning on Beltway 8 so as long as I don't get a heavy foot I get pretty close to highway millage.
Hundreds of dollars for struts? I'll bet you a hundred, you can get an aftermarket pair for less than 50!
I paid $60 for both on my 96 Avalon
Peter Riis go to a junk yard and get them off a wrecked car. Just check the length, the rest of them are all the same

OEM?

Nah - I don't trust junk yard parts that old when gas is involved. But I do use them for interior stuff or other stuff you can assess by looking at it.
Guys, sarcasm. He was joking. Like why couldn't his customer spend a little money on new supports rather than use a pipe.
My dad bought a '99 new. Drove in for 7 years. My wife drove it for 12. 270k on it now. It'll hopefully be my son's first car when he turns 16 in a couple of years.
Hood supports cheaper than new car payment, i always fix 'em. Hood fall on head never fun
A stick suits an old Toyota
My 02 Camry hood still works fine w 173,000 miles.
@@poldariser8686 Toyota owners seem very insecure, every comment has a reply with 'my Toyota xxx has done xxxx miles and its perfect' like you all need validation for your car choice or you want a prize for putting up with beat up toyotas.
@@Flying_GC it's about reliability not insecurity. Toyota owners are just proud of their long lasting investment.
@@poldariser8686 rubbish mate. Toyota drivers usually buy Toyotas because they were told too. They often know jack squat about cars, and probably dont realise plenty of other cars last just as long and in many cases longer. There are plenty of Toyotas that are rubbish. I only watch Scotty videos for the entertainment, from him and his fans. Both which have limited understanding of modern cars.
Scotty, I like this video about Avalon. I just bought a used 2018 Avalon. It has 32K miles when I bought it. I love it so much, it really feels luxurious. Almost like a Lexus, without the heavy price tag.
2019 is leaps and bounds better.
"Never buy a Toyota that has this problem"

Das ist doch scheisse
@@mikefoehr235 So much for the sauberer nicht anstößiger Kommentar, no gift for you.
The problems with front wheel drives are often the constant velocity joints. Never put your foot down when steering full lock. Oh yes, the steering rack was very difficult to remove in some Toyota models.
I only baby my vehicle when the engine is below operating temperature.
I bought some new hood shocks for my wifes 2001 Avalon for $18.40 with free shipping on Ebay in 2017. Still work great.
Ah yes in my 98 camry the steering rack is leaking, just keep adding ATF oil ;)
nacha laica AT 205 reseal time
@@keiffitz689 mmm would that work? I ment to say automatic transmission fluid
@@luccianodfs6711 yes
Keif Fitz are used a little bit, like 2 oz of it in my 99 Chevy Silverado and it hasn’t leaked any since
Are you still driving it with the leak?
I never heard of vvt problem with Avalon,i heard of the rubber oil hose going bad and leaking all the oil out,but they put a metal line instead of the rubber in 2013 and beyond and i got a 2015 Avalon, the best car i have ever owned PERIOD!!!!!!!
Hey Scotty ever heard of a Toyota avensis
Taxi driver love them in the Uk and some have up to 400000miles on them
Avensis are great and solid cars. The diesels will run for ever. That is why Taxis use them.
I think its basically equivalant to the Camry but yeah those things go for a long time.
We have few to none in my area because many people think they are ugly I also don't like them, there are plenty of Toyota Yaris though
+Blue Moon The D4D is a terrible engine.
Yep, d4d diesel is the worst product Toyoyta made
Monroe makes replacement gas struts for just about any hood. I just replaced them on my dad’s 1992 SC400 (heavy hood!) for about $40. Did the trunk while I was at it ($35). Lexus quote for both jobs was between $820-$900. Took me 90 min because I had to use a handsaw to remove an old strut from a stripped bolt head.
scotty can you do a review on ls400 ?
I have been waiting too. Got the 1999 with 240K. Runs smooth. Never letting it go
attyrustico He doesn’t like The eight cylinder Toyota Lexus engines as much he does not like the design specifically the placement of the starter you can check his old videos
@@paystyles5429, forgiven yhem, They must be noobs. Actually I was going to get a LS400 based on another mechanics recommendation, found one two months ago on Facebook for $6000 with 73K original miles and original owner. Very clean car, but to replace the rubber and that V8 engine per Scotty, I passed.
@@paystyles5429 oh i get it now... i would just like to see a video done just for it. but i remember him saying about how hard the v8 engines are to work on.
hood strut replacements are 13 bucks and take about 5 minutes.... maybe hundreds at the dealership...
when Scotty reviews your car O_O
On my 87 Supra, Been using since 06 when I got the car, an old wood snow brush that was already in the car, fits in a hole on the fenders nicely.
The 2019 Toyota Avalon Grille 😁
It looks like an electric shaver
@@TearsInReign lol
What the duck🦆😂
My mother's 2000 Toyota Avalon has the VVT 3.0L V6 with 180,000 miles on it and it still runs and drives like new
I’d love an 85 Cressida
The inline 6, 7m engine was a good engine to work on. There was a design flaw from the factory with weak head gasket that tends to blow under stress driving. Once you replace the headgasket the engine is good
5:30 back to the future. It disappeared
Check out a few things before you buy them! Good advice from Scotty as always.
My 1996 Avalon xls has 220k miles on the clock. I use Amsoil 5w30 and I’m getting 27 mpg driving a mixture of city and highway. I love my little work commuter...
