I was 15 years old. I didn’t know who the band was but in the summer of 1973 my parents would drive the family to our weekend vacation home on LAKE GENEVA, WISCONSIN! And I would play the car radio on the local rock station and every trip this song would play and I would love it. By the next year my dad started to let me take the boat out on the lake by myself so I went down to the local hardware store and they had a rack of 8-Track tapes for sale and I needed a music tape to play on the boat when I went out without my parents. Not knowing who Deep Purple were at this time I found a tape that had a cover art with 5 wax heads on a black and purple background. It looked cool so I figured it had to be a good tape. I bought it, went down to the boat, started it up and pulled away from the dock, stuck the tape in the player and hit “play”! Next thing I’m hearing is Ritchie’s opening riff to Burn!!! A huge smile comes across my face as I listen for the first time to fucking Deep Purple Burn! The rest is history. I have been Deep Purple’s number one fan since 1974!
When I was a teeny bopper and the world was young! Was on my cassette playlist! One of my favorites! Of course I didn't understand the words back then!
Yes, that's the solo, but as a guitarist with over 40 years of experience (over 30 years of that as a working lead guitarist/lead vocalist), I can assure you that every guitar solo (or keyboard solo, drum solo, bass solo, sax solo, trumpet solo, marimba solo or whatever else have you) is made up of what we players usually call "riffs." Granted, some folks call them "chops" instead, but it's still the same bloody thing, innit?😉 A great solo like this one is made up of a series of interconnected riffs or chops, all inevitably drawing together towards a summit, or "crescendo" (much like a fireworks display), which this one does immediately before the band returns to the intro riff. But hey, brother, why get bogged down with all those details and technicalities when you can just enjoy instead, right?😉

We all came out to Montreux
On the Lake Geneva shoreline
To make records with a mobile
We didn't have much time
Frank Zappa and the Mothers
Were at the best place around
But some stupid with a flare gun
Burned the place to the ground
Smoke on the water, fire in the sky
Smoke on the water
They burned down the gambling house
It died with an awful sound
Funky Claude was running in and out
Pulling kids out the ground
When it all was over
We had to find another place
But Swiss time was running out
It seemed that we would lose the race
Smoke on the water, fire in the sky
Smoke on the water
We ended up at the Grand hotel
It was empty cold and bare
But with the Rolling truck Stones thing just outside
Making our music there
With a few red lights and a few old beds
We make a place to sweat
No matter what we get out of this
I know we'll never forget
Smoke on the water, fire in the sky
Smoke on the water
