The problem with Ice Guys was it was too watchable. This is the level of embarrassing I've come to expect from modern cable television
I even got into this vid's story - near the end I was like, "well, yeah, he was on the wall and Joel came back - so, sure - gotta get spanked 🤷..... Wait ... What?! ..... no, actually, yeah, he shouldn't have been on the wall..."

For the longest time, I had thought that TLC stood for ‘Tender Loving Care’ for the channel. When I found out it stood for ‘The Learning Channel’, I remembered why the Discovery Channel isn’t taken seriously anymore and accepted that it was only a matter of time before Animal Planet would be about robots
And don’t get us started on the History Channel 💀

M night shyamalan level misdirect
It confused me for a bit because it's so irrelevant lol. If anything, it might be a metaphor for how every TLC show has dysfunctional people at it's core. After that, you get the real show
I love the initial implication that they "share a wall" between their apartments and then they just never mention that again.
I was looking for someone in the comments to mention this! The first few seconds of the video seems to be implying the more common meaning behind the phrase "share a wall," haha. Then they completely abandon that angle and never speak of it again. I went from being confused to waiting for the "original" wall to come back up, to finally laughing when I realized that they're indulging themselves in the live-action equivalent of a pun. :-)

I read somewhere that the actress who plays Miranda spent 1 minute, 15 seconds and 50 miliseconds to get the phone to show that time for the scene. That's dedication.
Sorry to say that it was actually just the magic of Hollywood. It went to the fx team in post, who spent a day making that shot so realistic
This was more educational than anything I've ever seen on TLC, and I'm not even joking.
I mean we've learned that the wall is a safety hazard when you disrespect it, we've learned the main characters have shitty neighbors

Back in the 90s they used to have doctor shows (watching surgeries being performed), home renovation shows (hometime is still on the air, actually), and animal shows like natgeo.
Now it's literally "fat pregnant children" being showcased as freakshow attractions.

Around 1990, I randomly flipped to The Learning Channel in the middle of raw eye surgery footage. Just a 4:3 tv screen full of an open eye being cut open and... worked on. It scarred 10yr-old me for years. Now instead of blunt trauma, TLC produces a sadder injury to the soul, like someone drove a tap into the mind and is slowly draining it
Bring back traumatic, 90s television.
Remember watching disaster shows as a kid, and being shaken up.

You nailed it! I stumbled on a real child birth on TLC as a grade schooler, and would prefer that fate for my own kids over the garbage that’s on there now.
For me it was a surprise introduction to close-up knee surgery. But there were also shows like junkyard wars that I actually did manage to learn from. I miss that channel.

Just as with Ice Guys, Joel's attention paid to the most minute (and infuriating) trends of reality TV is equally thrilling and haunting.
I'm absolutely convinced that History's lawyers have at least one discarded C&D draft addressed to Joel because they wrote most of it not realizing that Ice Guys isn't an actual show of theirs.
What's beautiful is that this is the exact cinematography style they use on TLC 😂 Really nailed it, Joel!

Complete with dorky music like at the beginning, and the “sneaky” one when Ben comes into play. It’s great.
I love Joel Haver's version of bloopers, allows the audience to meta laugh without breaking immersion or premise by just sneaking it in for half a second 3:44

TLC used to have a show called the operation. Just filmed medical procedures, not shy with getting right in their. It was really interesting, saw 25 or so of them. The one that turned me off was a total knee replacement. The front of the leg just splayed out, the way they moved it around. Its been over 20yrs but It a fairly clear memory.
Damn, this must be where that other guy saw eye surgery.
There's as much *learning* on "The Learning Channel" as there is history on "The *history* channel".

I have to say Charlie handled this whole thing nicely and I'm so proud of him for being able to control his anger. I wouldn't have been able to be this calm if someone played on the wall in front of me.

Growing up for years of my mom watching TLC and HGTV, the personalites are absolutely perfect!

TLC takes a relaxed approach to learning that I find highly effective.

Hey Joel, Love your videos man! This one killed me! Also, I'm a cinematographer and I think (might be wrong) I recognize that you're shooting on one of the bmpcc6k models. But I'm noticing some issues with the highlight retention in the outdoor scenes, and I might be able to help as that's my main camera! In short, it sounds totally odd, but the best highlight dynamic range for the 6k is at iso 1000 when shooting outdoors. Also, if you're shooting in BRAW, you can click the highlight recovery feature in resolve and get those highlights back. Not that your shorts need it, these could be shot on the original iphone and still be just as funny because you're such an excellent writer! But I'm a nerd so I couldn't help but share my experience! Keep up the gutsplitting comedy man, your channel is an absolute gem!
I love how he angrily explains "Hey, the store was closed!" as the first thing when he comes back, so we aren't left wondering why he showed up early.
these type of skits are my absolute favorite on this channel!!
