    • @arthand7672
      @arthand7672 8 месяцев назад +12

      And numbers. I'm not sure why they bother with Caps and special characters since 99% of the time the first letter is capitalized and people choose the exclamation mark as the special character.
      I swear at one of my old jobs they had me write down every new hires password because they had to watch training videos and the system wanted to track which ones they watched, but they would keep forgetting the passwords so one day my manager just started having me get them all to write down so they could get back in when they forgot it.
      Every. Single. Time it was the first letter capitalized and an exclamation mark. I guess I'm the only person the company hired that used something else instead

    • @LootFragg
      @LootFragg 8 месяцев назад

      @@arthand7672 Because the existence of caps and special characters increases entropy. Crackers can account for that and the knowledge that most passwords have aforementioned limitations makes it a lot easier, but it's still an extra bit of randomness.
      If you don't enforce the use of caps and such, people WILL default to making the easiest passwords that might even be guessed by a human ("admin", "123"). Forcing them to add more stuff increases entropy and thus makes simple brute forcing way harder. Knowing, of course, that in most passwords the first letter is a capital letter and the only special characters come at the end, allows crackers to adjust the algorithm and makes it so much easier, but in terms of raw brute force, it's still FAR better than allowing pure lowercase passwords.
      I'm just amazed that some sites allow people to have short passwords. 8 characters doesn't mean shit to a machine.

    • @davidwuhrer6704
      @davidwuhrer6704 7 месяцев назад

      No it's not. And it's not new. There is a website that catalogues the most stupid rules for passwords.
      Each additional rule for passwords makes passwords easier to guess. The most famous example is the Enigma code machine that was broken because it didn't allow a character to map to itself.
      Even sillier is when there is a maximum for password length, and when certain characters are not allowed. My guess is that those rules exist to guarantee that passwords can be broken, because that is all they do.
      The erroneous thinking behind requiring mixed case and "special" characters seems to be that passwords that are more difficult to remember are also more difficult to brute force. So they significantly reduce the search space. Human logic.

    From 2:38 and on Joel stands in front of a picture of Fort Boyard, a military fort later turned into a remote prison along to the French west coast. Later on this fort was used as a decor for a TV show called "Fort Boyard', broadcasted in various European countries & USA where participants had to find keys to unlock a treasure. Coincidence?! Or is Joel a genius? 🗝

    I remember reading a book where some teens were trained to be spys. It's been a while since I read it but the hacking part stood out to me.
    They had fairly realistic sounding hacks from the hacker previously, like... going onto a computer, downloading some tools from his own website, running a program then deleting those tools. Made sense to me as a kid.
    But... then they had a moment where the spy organization was asked to test a military facilitys security. The guards were made aware of the test and were given the task of protecting some fake documents- they had like- fake guns and such. You know, just a training thing, the guards didn't take it seriously because the people they were up against were a bunch of teens.
    It was interesting, they broke in, got onto the computer without raising the alarm, then it was the hackers turn. I was into it, and started to guess what he was doing, maybe he'd already hacked in previously to another database and gained the password. They did a cool thing previously where they showed hacking wasn't just about running codes, they also might make a phone call and impersonate someone to get information or get them to do something. I was expecting something like that, basic, grounded, and kinda made sense.
    ... Hacker started wildly guessing... the password was something like passw0rd. The military lost, the general was furious and didn't know how the kids cracked the computer when they spent billions on security software and safety nets. The hacker dude smirked and informed them that 'passw0rd' was a terrible password and gave them some alternatives.
    ... I remember rubbing my eyes and audibly tell the book "YOU ASSUMED THE FRIKIN MILITARY USED THAT KINDA PASSWORD ON A SECURE COMPUTER?! SON OF A- WHAT IF YOU WERE WRONG?!?" That was- one of the most frustrating parts of that book. Stuck with me all these years. I remembered dropping that book series because it's writing started to have those kinda holes in it

      That's not unrealistic. As late as the early nineties, it was not uncommon for milnet computers to have the password file world writeable in case the admin locked himself out. (You couldn't get into milnet from a computer on another network anyway, which is why hackers used the security advisory MITRE's machine which had a telephone directory and allowed to dial into milnet computers directly from the command line; needless to say MITRE was 100% secure.) VAXes would list all the users on the system to anyone before login, so you knew what user names to try. SSH worms assume that the password is the user name, and they are still not extinct. And until the late 2000s the nuclear launch codes were ten 0s (but the order of them was a state secret).
