Dax: You know, Joel, I was thinking about hands the other day. It's so weird, right? Like, we have these five-fingered appendages at the end of our arms.
Joel: Yeah, hands are strange. They're so sensitive, like you can feel everything with them. Sometimes when I touch something, it's almost overwhelming.
Dax: I know what you mean. And when you're in a social situation, it's like, what do you even do with your hands? Do you put them in your pockets or cross your arms?
Joel: It's amazing how much you can feel with your hands. Like, you can tell the difference between textures just by touching them. I once picked up a rock that felt like it had tiny bumps all over it.
Dax: Right, but going back to social situations, it's like my hands suddenly become these foreign objects that I don't know what to do with. Do I gesture while I'm talking or keep them by my side?
Joel: I wonder if everyone else's hands are as sensitive as mine. Like, can you feel the ridges on your fingertips when you touch something smooth?
Dax: But seriously, sometimes I find myself overthinking what I'm doing with my hands when I'm talking to someone. It's like, should I be moving them more, or is it better to keep them still?
Joel: Oh, and what about the temperature of things? I can tell if something is warm or cold just by touching it. It's kind of amazing when you think about it.
Dax: Yeah, okay, but let's talk about handshakes. Are they supposed to be firm or gentle? I don't want to come across as aggressive or weak, you know?
Joel: Speaking of touching, do you ever think about how many things you touch in a day? It's like, we're constantly using our hands to interact with the world around us.
Dax: I suppose, but I'm more focused on what I'm supposed to do with my hands when I'm not using them for something specific. Like, do I hold a drink or just let them hang there?
Joel: It's funny, sometimes I'll just touch things for no reason. Like, I'll run my fingers over the surface of a table or a wall, just to see how it feels.
Dax: So, I tried clasping my hands together once, but then it looked like I was praying or something. It's a never-ending battle to figure out what's appropriate in different social settings.
Joel: I've always thought it was interesting how people can tell so much about a person just by looking at their hands. Like, you can see if they work with their hands a lot or if they take care of them.
Dax: Well, I guess I'll just have to keep experimenting with different ways to hold my hands. Maybe one day I'll find the perfect solution.
Joel: You know, I've never really thought about what to do with my hands in social situations. I guess I'm just too focused on how they feel and what I can do with them.

I've had a few such situations, right on a street just like in this film, and even though it's always somewhat awkward, it's not that bad if you play your cards right. Trying to bring both friends into conversation, asking the just-met friend where they're heading to, finishing the conversation when the time's just right (which is usually just 'not too long') - all this helps smooth it out like butter. Overall, when the two don't know each other at all and have different interests, the best tactic is to just end the horror as soon as possible, within 30 seconds preferably.

I love things like this. It just shows how inept some of us are with other people’s feelings. Stepping back from our own perception of the world to see things from other people’s perspectives is one of the hardest things to do sometimes.
The idea that other people are also people that have their own stress, their own emotions, their own insecurities is something that’s so obvious, but is so easily taken for granted and overlooked.

I loved that quote from Conrad's Heart of Darkness at the very end. It's a great way to tie in the plot twist that the awkward social interaction reminded Joel of the time he met "that one Black friend" who was a friend of another friend, and he was worried that he might offend him on account of a difference in culture, but in hindsight his very considerations reflected minor racist preconceptions that haunt him with regret to this very day, since that's not the kind of legacy he wants to leave behind.
