Post-op Orbital Exenteration & Cranial Surgery Losing My Eye and What's Next for Cancer Treatment

  • It's been three weeks post-op after losing my eye due to cancer in my sinuses (nasal squamous cell carcinoma). I had an orbital exenteration with skin flap taken from my arm, along with cranial surgery to remove the dura and some brain lining that the tumor was also impacting. I have been struggling a bit but am trying to get back into a better headspace in order to be strong for the next round of treatment which will be radiation on both my face and neck. I will receive proton radiation along with traditional radiation.

My sister-in-law has stage 3C ovarian cancer. It's been 12 months of surgeries, chemo, and immunotherapy. She developed double vision and a severe migraine headache during the immunotherapy sessions. Next day underwent a CT scan and emergency brain surgery to remove blood clots. Was bedridden for a couple of months after that. She started to lose hope then suddenly last Sunday she recovers and is back outside shopping and almost back to "normal". She resumed the immunotherapy infusions this week. Fingers crossed. Good luck Melanie. You are not alone in this fight.

Oh Melanie. I have so much I would like to say to you and about you but I just feel like I can't begin, but will try while I'm bawling my eyes out. My name is Carol and I'm 77 years old and feel so blessed to have made it so far in life with no major bumps in the road. To see what you are going through makes me sad and very angry! Why oh why do these things happen to such a young and beautiful girl like you. I am asking God to give me your pain and your worries during these days now and going forward. I complain about my arthritis pain and back pain, things like that that are absolutely nothing in comparison to your pain and the lose of an eye. To me you are the strongest individual I have ever encountered on you tube. I have watched you from the beginning of your journey and nothing in this world compares to you and your sense of humor and your courage!! I hope that very very soon your life will become somewhat normal and you can start taking care of your beautiful baby girl. I am praying that maybe there will be a way that a plastic surgeon can make it possible to give you a glass eye. Miracles happen every day in medicine and new procedures are found every day. Believe me when I tell you that you are beautiful just the way you are right now though. The courage you show is more than incredible and I'm so sorry to keep babbling on and taking up much of your time if you read this, maybe during the time getting chemo. I really believe this will happen to you some day, meaning receiving a glass eye. If not, like I say, you are beautiful just the way you are. The day you were coming home from the hospital and revealing how you are now without your eye was nothing short of courageous. I didn't feel at that moment that you looked anything but beautiful. I mean it. For some reason, because of your attitude and courage that you looked just fine. Anyway, I will let someone else get on here and I will go about my day with you on my mind and praying that you will not have any more hurtles and just be able to enjoy your life going forward. Bless you, Melanie, and bless your sweet baby girl along your journey of healing along with you.

Melanie, you are so strong. Take care of yourself and let the healing take place. You are a beautiful person and a beautiful soul. Grace is good. I don’t pretend to imagine how you feel. Just know all your feelings are yours and part of the process. You are grieving. You have lost a lot. This takes time. Grieving is grieving whether it be a loss of another person or the loss of who you were vs who you are now. It’s ok to have all those emotions. Deal with them and as you said give yourself grace. Prayers! 💕🙏🏻🙏🏻

Melanie, I am so sorry the hits keep coming. Do not worry that you aren’t as “positive” as you think you need to be. You can be angry, frustrated and devastatingly sad and still do what you need to do.
Keep munching that elephant! FWIW, your new look already looks like “you” to me. ❤

Dear Melanie, you’ve been dealt a horrible blow!! Please growl out loud, express all your feelings and thoughts, do not hide yourself or suppress whatever is welling up!! Are you having some kind of emotional/mental therapy? Don’t put that off, so very important. I love that you are giving yourself grace 🙏🏻👏🏻‼️This is certainly a marathon, not a sprint. Hold your precious baby, nourish your body, feed your spirit and soul, and stay focused on the prize coming, more travels and van time. Be patient and let people take as much stress away from you as often as possible. I am keeping you in my thoughts and prayers. Keep your faith close, therein lies never ending hope for full healing, recovery, and strength to see it all through!!🙏🏻💪❤️‼️

You poor girl. You are going through a war. Of course you’re traumatized by the experience and the massive surgery and it’s going to take you time to work through it all. Please take your time with that and take all the comfort and support that your family is offering. You don’t have to be strong through all of this. There’s a need to fall apart and let your feelings come out. It’s a step in the healing process. Counterintuitive, I know, but real. I’m going to praying and praying for you, the baby and family, but especially for you to be fully and completely healed. Rest, rest, rest. You have lots of people praying for you and prayer is powerful. ❤❤

Keep swimming Melanie, God has got your back (and every other part of you). I'm so glad you said you are giving yourself grace! Today is a great day for a miracle! Prayers for your strength, peace, joy, your shalom - wholeness, soundness, and more. Prayers for your family and their shalom as well. I speak healing over you. God's Word became life and is life for us. He sent His Word and healed them and delivered them from all their destructions. Psalm 107:20 His Word does not return void without accomplishing what He has sent it to do. Isaiah 55:11 The Word became flesh John 1:14 and by His stripes we were healed 1 Peter 2:24.
Many Blessings to you all from Deborah in West Virginia. 🙏🏻❤

I have a macular scar in the back of my left eye which is not anything close to as bad as what you are dealing with. I am visually impaired but not disabled per the US Social Security Adminstration rules. I do know though with one eye you loose depth perception and that therapy can help you preserve your ability to hold a drivers license. In Wisconsin where I live, so long as a person has 70% peripheral vision, you can have a regular drivers license. Hope this info helps you gain some confidence to persevere with this health burden a little better hopefully. And when your ready, look into a prosthetic. There was a reporter who lost an eye when she walked into the prop of a plane that had it done, and my helicopter pilot friend I mentioned before. It will definitely help boost your spirits. May this journey be over for you soon and enjoy your pretty baby as much as you safely can while you heal Momma!

I know you mean well, but they had to take Melanies eye socket as well, not just the eye itself, so they cannot put an eye prosthetic there. Perhaps it's possible do restruction on the eye socket although, that I do not know.

You will get there, getting your strength back, you have a fantastic mindset! Brave is an understatement! It's a really good thing they found during surgery, what was not showing up on the pet scan, so that they can be more aggressive now with the treatment and take care of it. It would have been awful, if going through all this, and then the other stuff had come as a very unpleasant surprise. Now you are on top of things and you got this! I so admire how brave and put together you are!🌟🍀🙏🌸
