- I have been getting questions regarding my eye surgery. It was a complete removal of my left eye called and orbital exenteration with a skin flap. This was an extensive part of my cancer journey as it involved also going in through my scalp as they had to remove part of my dura which is lining into the brain. I was in the hospital recovering for a total of 14 days. These are some of the answers to questions I have got since posting following surgery.

It was my left eye that was removed, depending on what I film on it will invert the image and appear as if it's on the right, but it was my left eye and then the skin flap was taken from my left arm.
The worst is behind you Melanie. Now it's all about resilience and you are already doing that very well my brave girl💜

My uncle had the same type of cancer as you removed. They made a skin flap from his forehead and it went down over a big piece of the side of his nose. He wears a patch over his eye everyday. It has been several years since he had his surgery . He is doing well now and that’s my prayer for you. I pray God gives you good health and a long life with your beautiful family. I know you are grieving the life you had and the way you used to look but your beauty is truly from within and you are still the same person. Hold onto your faith even in these hard times. I keep you in my prayers and often think of you during the week. You have touched my heart with your journey .

Firstly, I’m appalled by anyone who leaves a negative comment (seriously, ..get a life). Secondly, you were, are, and always will be a truly beautiful woman…. What an extraordinary example you will be to your children. Your strength & generosity in sharing your journey is remarkable and inspiring. Facts!
Melanie - I’m semi retired and work part-time in a clothes shop in the UK. The other day I served a lady who had radical surgery to her face, eyes and nose. We were running a promotion and I made sure she got the maximum discount on the clothes her husband was buying for her birthday. She radiated happiness and was a pleasure to be around. I thought she was beautiful, so positive and joyful.

Some people may say that, because they are jaded from the deep fakes, they can fake almost anything now, my aunt was scammed using a deep fake voice of her husband, as a result she trust nothing on the internet now, also our government continuously lies, it's a sad reality.

One of my best friends had an enucleation of her left eye because of cancer. We're both OR RNs.... I had to make sure not to hand her things from the left side. We spilled more than one dish!!! You seem to be doing better! Hang in there.
Yes, it's really disorienting if someone approaches me from the left. I try to keep them on my right so I can see in my periphery.

@@melaniefostersnavelyyes, having worked quite a few years for an ophthalmologist, I know from patients that had only the use of one eye said that takes a period of adjustment to get used to, depth perception is alerted, but they say they adjust, drive, and do everything that other people do, and it seems normal to them. I think your brain just makes accommodation to it. You are so strong and beautiful! I see you having lovely hair again, wearing make up again, and having many fun eye patches to go with whatever outfit you are wearing!

Hi Melanie , it’s so good to see you ! I’ve been following you since the beginning, praying for you . I’m a retired Radiation Therapist and as I had said before, treatment to the head and neck are THE hardest treatments anyone can do , it effects the mucous membranes , tissues in your mouth, nose, throat .. and it’s very painful to undergo . You are such a strong person and fighting this like a warrior and I’m so proud of you !! Each day , you’re a day closer to feeling better again. Your body is fighting hard to heal itself , is why you’re so tired, listen to your body and rest . You’re doing great - one day / step / minute at a time !! You have to understand that there are totally abnormal people out there…. They are sick…. Anyone that says something that sick, you need to block them or have someone read the comments and block the sick people out there… it’s unfortunate but reality… I only pity people that were raised in such ugliness ! Great to see you melanie!!! Incase you choose a prostetic eye, maybe choose one with the eye closed. Eyes are part of communication and a closed eye is neutral in regards of emotions. That would blend good. If you choose an open eye, try to get one where the lids are not wide open. I am following some that wear one and the more closed the eye is the less artificial it feels for the person infront of you.

Hi Melanie, I cannot believe some people can be so hurtful and rude!! I feel so sorry for them, to even think that someone would lie about the horrendous journey you’re on!! You don’t have to justify anything to them! If they cared and watched your journey from the beginning they would think differently because there’s no body more honest and genuine as you. Melanie, just block and delete the trolls and they will move on to the next poor sole!!! I think your eye is looking much better 👍 I think when the radiation swelling goes down it’ll look even better!! I feel so so sorry for you, what you’re going through with the radiation sounds horrendous, you have radiation burns in your throat so you struggle to eat, your nose is sore your face is burnt/sore!! Anybody who’s had sun burn will have an idea of how painful it is!! Just remember Melanie it’s not forever and only going to get better from now on xxxx love from the UK 🇬🇧 xxxx

Give yourself grace while healing from radiation and everything else! For me after radiation I thought the pain and gross rash would never go away, it stayed the same for about a month, while the radiation was still working, then I healed really quickly after the one month mark. You are in my prayers!
Thank you for sharing this with me! That gives me hope. I am two weeks out and slowly starting to feel better but I am not there yet. Here's to hoping the next two weeks really make strides.

Your face is still uncompromised. I didn't know they took the whole orbit out . These details really put into perspective how well your doing and how good the surgeon did. This surgery was done alot in world wars. All of the injuries that battle can cause. Your a warrior, and a good lookin woman. If you weren't already taken, I would have asked you out by now!! Thank you for sharing these details, Melanie. It's amazing what they had to do to get your flap. I have to say, I think the flap looks good! I wish the associated symptoms would get better for you...the behind the eye sensation, the nasal stuffiness. I'll pray about those. Are you interested in speaking with a counselor with expertise in helping people process huge life changes like you are dealing with? I hope I'm not speaking out of turn. I just want things to be better for you! And re the negative comments, maybe your hubby or another family member or friend would be willing to triage them for you and delete those before you see them. You do NOT need to see anything hateful or negative!! We LOVE you and support you and are praying for you!!
