Before I sold my 67 Nova, it had a 406/M21 4.11's and 28/10-15 MT slicks. The best I got out of it was mid-12's. The best the new owner and his nephew got out of it was 12.40's. He tried different things as far as the engine went, but it either stayed the same, or slowed down. He switched to a manual valve body Powerglide with a 4000 rpm stall and got in the 11's. Even though that was a pretty decent improvement, I think the main problem was the engine. Stock 5.56 rods and a restrictive top half. It had 462 camelback 1.94's, Edelbrock Performer RPM, and a Holley 750 double pumper. Crower 00355 solid cam, Hypereutectic flat tops, MSD 6A, and a Mallory Unilite. Fenderwell headers just like yours. If I had went with longer rods and a better breathing top half, it would made a world of difference.
id never ever build another 5.56 or 5:7 rod 406 ever again ! I used 6 inch olds rods in my first 406 like 30 years ago after using the short rods like 5-6 years i had an s10 i opened the power pack heads drilled the steam holes 172 150 swirl polished the valves tiny valves on that 406 made a crazy 8th mile motor it went from running 7:80 to 6:70 with rod change i later got a set of pontiac heads for small block chevy they were good for another half second 6:2 the kick was 1/4 mile it went 9:90 which made little sense but i guess the 2:05 1:72 valves made that much difference !
Ole yeah love my Glide I built it few years back 180 straight cut low gear with all good parts, can't wait to see your 408 video!! Thanks for sharing and knocking it out of the Park 😊😊😊❤
Man great mph. Sniffin 120. Such a beautiful crackle and cackle symphony of an exhaust tone. Gotta luv it. Very nice. Your doing us traditional sb chevy hotrodders proud.
I just happened upon this video. I am in the middle of going the opposite direction, the reason being I wanted a better highway gear. Original combo was 1.76 Turbo spline Powerglide with 4400 stall converter and 4.56 rear gear. Footbraking my 68 Nova went 11.80's. Now it has a T350, same converter with 3.25 rear gear. This has roughly the same 1-2 as the Powerglide but with the addition of 3rd for highway rpm of 3000 instead of 4000. I have yet to get an actual time with this combo but from your video I can assume I will lose some. That's okay for me. Thanks for putting up this video.
Fair comparison requires same converter diameter, ideally same converter. I've been in the racing transmission business since the mid 80s. Personally made the change from a T-400 to a 1.76 glide in my big block Chevelle, a regular @ Byron. Car ran mid 10s, Glide picked it up a tenth, using the same 8" converter. Made the change quite a few times in customer rides, always about the same improvement. Your result was due to the converter difference, however it proved once again a glide will be a bit quicker in a average bracket car. More consistent too. You can find me @ Byron in my green and orange Chevelle w/2nd gear start T-400 pulling pretty stout wheels up launches.
Good morning everybody, I just watch the video, Gentleman, do you take for the trip with the 406 already or not, actually sounds healthy the 406 too, take care everybody and good luck with it, 👋👋👋👍👍👍💪💪💪
A 1.82 power glide will break pretty easy. It will last for awhile. Reason of why they break is that the planetary hears are small dia. 1.76 is harder to break because the planetary gears are much larger in dia. Car will probably faster with the 1.82. I ran faster with a power glide than my turbo 400 with a A-1 8" converter, 4,000 stall, not enough stall, changed it to 5,500 rpm and car picked up... Both on et. and mph...
For once a video that isnt about an LS engine swap. Thanks for holding the legacy of the SBC 350 5.7 L31
Nice thank you.
Looks and sounds great. 11.26 is moving, has to be a lot of fun!
Thank you. Yes having a good time.
In the old days all we ran was powerglides
I appreciate all the work that you put in these videos. Thank you.
No problem. Im enjoying it.

Thank you for the input. Before I owned the car it was a 4 speed car with camel humps. It was a mid 12 second car. The 4 speed was alot of fun.

The rods wouldn't make any difference but a set of afrs would make all the difference in the world.
Love the content, I’ve watched every video so far. Keep em coming.
Nice, Thank you.
Nice job on the 11.26 you werent expecting that. Looking forward to see what the new motor does
Yes thank you. Should be in a couple of weeks.
Sounds great, runs great.
Nice budget combo!
Thank you
Awesome improvement over the turbo 350. Also, we love Byron Dragway too!
Beautiful Nova and a very very nicely set up drivetrain. Awesome
Thank you
Great video ,love your Channel

Thank you im thinking the 408 will like the glide.
Yes 488 gears too!! I run 500 gear with my BBC 496 but I run 1/8 Tracks!! Happy Racing 🏁
Second pass looked golden 🏁🏁🏁 plus that large cam sounds 🎶🎵🎶🎵
Thank you.
Smokey gold engines. Man I like it!
Great channel, great car, and great engines!
Nice thank you

Thanks Pat.
Great video. I’m surprised by the powerglide. I wonder how much it is due to the converter
Thank you. Im thinking quite a bit.

Nice that sounds interesting. Post up the results when you get them.
The new engine has wicket throttle response, the tight lsa helps.
Nice Thank you

Agreed, I appreciate the input. I do need to get a decent converter for Th350. Im still using the 17 spline input shaft in the powerglide.
Great video!
Nice, thank you.
it would be cool to do the math to see what the actual gear ratios are taking into account the multiplication factor from each respective TC
Bitchin Nova Nyle! The motor sounds great!
Thank you. This one runs good.
After seeing this I’m more and more sure that the 408 will put you in the 10’s
Hopefully, I will get it to the track in the next couple of weeks
With those 4.56 gears the powerglide helped utilize the torque curve as i mentioned before 👍👍
Nice the vortec heads seem to help make a nice torque curve.
sounds great
Thank you
That 350 does sound good! I see the fender well headers, is there any thing hanging off of those, pipe, muffler etc.?
It has 3inch warlock mufflers on it. I have them uncapped.
First vortec heads i have seen without the saw blade pattern on the front
Yes when was looking to buy the best deals where on the 906 castings vortecs. Maybe for this reason.
Solid 👏🏾💪🏾
Thank you
Sounds great, gettin pretty close to 10 seconds..
Yes I'm thinking i will need a new converter for the Th350 for that.
Thanks !!
I love this stuff! I couldn't really tell with the digital tach, what rpm do you shift this one at?
Thank you 6800
U did good 😮 couple cars,,,gold paint
Nice thank you
Willy says Chevy's like more timing 36-38deg 👍🚩📈

Yes made it out to great lakes dragway yesterday .The chevy 400 ran well.
Nice job
Thank you.
With all that duration I’m just wondering why you don’t raise the comp.,it wouldn’t have problem bleeding pres.off
I wanted to try a large duration cam with low compression. Plus I was using the parts I had on hand.
Meant to ask you which vortec heads exactly are you talking about that you have??
And are they OEM stock heads without porting?
Yes, 906 castings. They have the stock valve job. Single angle on the exhaust with the large exhaust seat insert.
Very nice. What's the rear gear ratio?
4.56
Powerglide with a lil nos that mf would looking at the shy off the line
What does the car weigh race ready?
I'm guessing around 3000 lbs. It was 2900 lbs in 2013 with a 200 lbs driver. I have since added a exhaust and went from a roll bar to a roll cage.
A 1.82 power glide will break pretty easy. It will last for awhile. Reason of why they break is that the planetary hears are small dia. 1.76 is harder to break because the planetary gears are much larger in dia. Car will probably faster with the 1.82. A 1 good converter
Nice thanks for the input.
Oh goldie locks
Nice
