Stock first gear ratios on a Powerglide transmission 1.82 1.76 the 1.80 that you have is an aftermarket gear set in my opinion you will be very happy with the power glide and possibly a little bit faster mostly happy that isn't broken all the time. I have ran a Powerglide for many years in a 36 plus hundred pound car that 60fts mid 1.3severybody said a Powerglide would not work in and I have never had a complaint.
Very good video and information. Always thought a power glide, was better for 1/8 mile racing and th400 was better for 1/4 mile. But after this video, I see the power glide is better for higher horsepower engines. While the Th400 extra gear helps out lower horsepower engines.
I've driven a lot of GM cars from the 70's and my favorite transmission is the turbo 350. I would only use the turbo 400 on an extreme build, like a drag car. Even though they might seem similar from the names, they drive totally different, turbo 400's can feel kind of heavy and clunky, 350's are smooth. Also, just for amusement, if you happen to knock your car into reverse while driving down the street, the 400 and 350 react totally differently. The 400 will lock your wheels up and kill the engine immediately, the 350 will kill the engine if you don't give it any gas, but if you give it some gas it will start spinning the wheels in reverse.
Actually we had a 400 turbo my friend had in a 72 cutlass 455 engine hit reverse hammering it and we went sideways and the tires were spinning backwards.didnt tear the trans up either

No inter fenders. The frame has holes drilled for weight. Still running stock front suspension. That’s about to change. I’m installing light weight A-arm and I plan to remove the front and side glass and go with Optic Armor. This should get me close to 3050-3100lbs. Running a big cubic inch SBC with a Built Power Glide. Truck best time is in the 6:50’s in the 1/8th mile. It has a 4:56 gear, so the power glide really helps me get off the line before having to shift and upset the truck. I’m hoping going with lighter front suspension and using Optic Armor I can get in the 6:30’s. That’s pretty good for a full size truck that’s all steel but the hood. I’m a big fan of the Power Glide even for street driving. My truck makes enough power that I don’t need a low first gear to get moving. Plus I have the 4:56 rear gear.. The lockup powerglide has been around since the late 90s. You didn't see them much after 2004 because they got outlawed in class type racing because people who had them were kicking ass with them. Only place you found them was grudge racing if they were willing to tell you. Once the rule went away they now own just about every record where they're aloud to be used. You can also get them for under 10k as a package. He's right in the fact if you want one of the best out there it's expensive. 15k won't even get it done in many cases. A stock PG is still good for the street in a low HP car say 300-600 hp after all GM put them in 3400 lbs + cars.. after 600hp it's best to put some stronger parts in them up to 1000hp with a blanket or shield of course .. After 1000hp you really need a built PG with a aftermarket case... Low HP cars with a stock PG work better when the car is 3000lbs or less.. Any thing over 3000 lbs street sometimes strip car really needs to be a th350 or th400 to get all that weight moving... After 1000hp it really don't matter.. I think the new hot setup is the turbo glide. Glides certainly have their place. The downfall of a glide is the same now as it has always been. It might be a lot lighter it also means its a lot weaker. You can make a seriously strong glide but its certainly going to cost. If your willing to sacrifice weight for strength but you still want a better first gear ratio then the 2 speed turbo glide is what the industry has turned to. I think it also depends on where your budget is. If you want something that will work behind a dump truck and is built for pure strength and you dont want to invest 5k in a tranny then a 400 is where its at. The 400 is an excellent option for someone who wants to go racing reliably on a budget. Your going to sacrifice the hp that all that extra rotating mass robs though. If your not so much on a budget and you are shooting for every 100th that you can squeeze out of the car and you dont mind all the additional maintaince then a glide is for you. Knocking out weight is just free horsepower. There is a reason why in stock eliminator and super stock most guys are running glides, 200r4, c4 and 904s with 3 clutch packs in them. Weight=hp. Just my 2 cents though. Nice video thumbs up.

I have an FTI TH400 and matching FTI 3600 stall converter (to keep it somewhat streetable) and love it. Highly, highly recommend FTI! Though with my new combo I’m likely to run into a somewhat similar situation you’re in and may have to switch to a glide. But if I do, I’m putting a gear vendors unit (has been plan for the 400, but haven’t done it yet) behind it and turn that 2 speed into 4speed, sorta;)

Great decision. Your going to pick up a ton with the reduced rotation weight. With your SBC the turbo 400 takes about 25 to 40 hp more to spin it. Your going to feel the difference when you make your first pass with the glide. Good luck.
Well the glide is a perfectly streetable trans gm ran many versions of it up till 64-65 whn the norm turbo hydro came out chevy had the power glide till 65-66 and for some cars even after tht due to da turbo hydro being a option altho some companies like pontiac buick caddy ran either a 3 speed or some even a 4 speed roto hydro trans till early mid 60s...some even had a "dual range" roto hydro trans which changes the shift points in the trans due to usein diff fliud passages.....honestly its about one gear/tires and how many times you wanna shift....a turbo hydro either the th350 th375 th400 ll have to be shifted twice where as a glide just once.....and as you said has a longer first gear allowin you to pull further i the power curve before shifts.....
I've been running 4l80e using MS3 controller vis canbus to the MS3 ultimate for YEARS...BBC well over 1000hp F1A-94...billet lockup....perfect for true street cars that strip as well.... And yes several 4l80e internal parts are the same as the t400 including the ratios PLUS without adding a sensor I can compare rpm vs turbine speed vs output shaft speed having built in traction control along with the ability to see convertor and trans slip easily in the logs.....
@@braleyshardwoodcustoms8584 uses a clutch in the converter to "lock" the transmission to 1 to 1 with the engine...meaning the engine turns once, the put shaft of the trans turns once....it can feel like another gear depending on how loose the stall is
@@braleyshardwoodcustoms8584 say your in 3rd gear 4500rpm, hit OD on the 4l80....drops to ~2300 rpm as ya sit at 65 to 70mph then the torque converter locks up..... dropping rpm to about 1800 to 2100 rpm. your th350/400 torque converter will ALWAYS have that few hundred RPM "slip" this slip also makes a lot of heat.... some th350s had a lock up TC.... along with some 3 speed FWD trans (th185 iirc) on an old gen 1 v8 GM.... a 700r4 is a direct bolt on (3 speed + OD + lock up TC) you will need the factory controller, and some throttle linkage for the TV cable (and know how to set it..... which is easy on stock brackets and carbs) but a 4l80E is a bit stronger....newer design.... and adapters are out their you can build a 700r4 to take a lot of power.... if ya cool it, and set the TV cable right

I’m building a 3200lb road car with a tubular rear chassis. 1200 rwhp and a BTE glide. Hope it’s good. The NZ champ prefers a th400 because he loads it up in top.
I want to put one on my my 280zx with my 350. My rear ended is 3.9 so I need less reduction on first so I feel like the powerglide would be a better option.
Good video. I’ve been struggling between what I’m going to run in my 3800lb pickup. Mostly just streeting around and maybe playing a little on the track. Been debating on 6L80 or 4L80. I’m pretty sure at this point the 2.48 first gear on the 4L80 will do me more justice than the 4.05 1st of the 6L. I’m dropping a bone stock Ls3 in the truck just to get a feel for it over the old V6 it had. I think if I kept it stock and just tooled around in it the 6 speed would be the answer, but since I don’t want tons of wheel spin taking off and later want the build/boost the motor I’m thinking 4L. Took my a long time to grasp why a power glide with that tall first gear could be beneficial in any way. But I think I finally get it.
I have a single turbo coyote and want to do a TH400 swap, I only plan to be 1000hp at most and drive it pretty regularly. What would you recommend I do TH400 or get a stage 3 of my factory trans?
John thanks for all the great vids. What stall size r u running and what are you launching at generally? Also - if you use a 2 step which is part of the question above are you WOT on launch and letting the 2 step hold you.
Since you said make a comment if you have any questions I guess i'll drop one in here because i'm just curious what you think. I'm a young car enthusiast that's trying to make his dreams a reality and trying to soak up as much knowledge as possible. I'm building a pro touring setup 1970 Chevelle that's going to be setup for autocross, but i'm going to be putting a twin turbo 6.0ls in it so it should be at least 1k hp, I also plan on driving it a lot and maybe taking it down the strip once or twice. I'm leaning towards powerglide but am just curious what your opinion is since you're much more knowledgeable than me
when running the 1/4 mile in the cow what differences will you see going from the TH400 to the glide? Like does the glide hit your max rpm sooner, because I am thinking you will hit high gear or 1:1 sooner in the glide than in the TH400. Just curious. By the 1/4 mile the TH400 is stretched pretty far in the cow I would imagine so just seeing if the glide is more suited for 1/8 mile passes for you.
What power range do you think necessitates a swap to a glide from a 400? I'm building a turbo ls foxbody, somewhere around 900hp for track use. I haven't picked a trans yet but was debating on 400 or glide.
I know most people have their own opinions of how to do it. But how did you do go about burnouts with the th400 at the track? Burnout started in 2nd then shift to 1st once at the line? Or start in first and quick bump to 2nd to finish. then back to 1st at the line?
Most of the big high hp big name guys that I know of run a th400. A lot use the turbo glide style which makes the th400 basically the same ratio as the powerglide but in general the TH400 is a stronger unit.
I have run T400s for years with zero breakaqge..I am building 2 new cars and plan to use nitrous at the launch...every trans co that I talk to has a different opinion..1 car will be about 3000#, the other..2600#...suggestions?
On power glide can you use Reid case and stock power glide internals. Look for power glide to use in my bracket / super street car. I like the idea of the Reid case for I don't have to use Blankets or external shields. what do you think?
I’m trying to build a Chevy Colorado with a turbo LS and I want to go with a powerglide…. My question is the rear end ratio….. what’s a good ratio with a glide? 3.73? 3.55? I’ll be running probably a 28-29” tire. Maybe a 30” 🤔🤷♂️ Thanks
Yea totally missed that I said a glide had a 1.48 first gear. My bad I meant 1.80 or 1.76 for those who are extremely specific

Most GM cars in the 60s had powerglides.. I had a few of them... just because you can wind it out in 1st gear doesn't make it fast.. it feels like it but it's not... I am running a powerglide in a BBF foxbody nitrous car with a 5000 stall... have to hit second gear 200ft out.
I have. 68. Camaro w a. Powerglide. It. Had. 6. Cyl. Now. It. Has. ,350. I. Was. Going. To .change. To. A. 400. Turbo. But. Now. I'm. Thinking. Change. The. Converter. What. Conv.
Would. Work. Best. Thank. You.
Hey bud know im late to comment on video but i think its badass move and its gna rip like never before imo!
I had a 78 jeep cj 7. Full time 4 wd w a hydromatic 400
.it was pretty sweet
I heard one advantage of a non-lockup converter is that they can handle more horsepower and torque than lockup ones 🤔. Nothing necessarily wrong with a non-lockup converter.
some shops are starting to do a race T400 case with powerglide internals, best of both worlds
Thank you for the information im gearing up to start building my 1987 camaro and just these little info vids help a good bit. Keep up the good work cant wait to see how the cow flys with the new wheels and such.
I have a rebuilt 4ll60 in my 95 Z28 and I love it.😎
Great decision. Your going to pick up a ton with the reduced rotation weight. With your SBC the turbo 400 takes about 25 to 40 hp more to spin it. Your going to feel the difference when you make your first pass with the glide. Good luck.
Very cool video. I've always had stick shifts, but it did answer some of my questions concerning the powerglide.
Damn, Reid Case in the house!
George Mitchell Big money 👍
Th350 here. Freakshow converters. About to build this trans to hold 1000+hp
RBMODS - what’s it in?
@@aliksykes4521 right now stock gear set. With green clutches, and kevlar band. Dont know if I am going to go glide or not man.
Yeap, a old buddy of mine had a 64 Malibu with a straight 6 and a glide from the factory. Definitely Street able
👍 great content lots of good information here keep it up good luck on the track.
I had no idea on the either transmissions great lesson.
Both are good aslong as thier not automatic....kickdown cable on a carb is just asking for meltdowns and 400 A/T is asking for a hot cabin
John, keep doing your thing Bro 👊🏽
4L80E=TH400+OD+ lockup torque converter
David Stephens no unidiot
I've been running 4l80e using MS3 controller vis canbus to the MS3 ultimate for YEARS...BBC well over 1000hp F1A-94...billet lockup....perfect for true street cars that strip as well....
And yes several 4l80e internal parts are the same as the t400 including the ratios PLUS without adding a sensor I can compare rpm vs turbine speed vs output shaft speed having built in traction control along with the ability to see convertor and trans slip easily in the logs.....
What exActly does the lock up TC do? I too run a th 400 and probably going thru rebuild soon
@@braleyshardwoodcustoms8584 uses a clutch in the converter to "lock" the transmission to 1 to 1 with the engine...meaning the engine turns once, the put shaft of the trans turns once....it can feel like another gear depending on how loose the stall is
@@braleyshardwoodcustoms8584 say your in 3rd gear 4500rpm, hit OD on the 4l80....drops to ~2300 rpm as ya sit at 65 to 70mph
then the torque converter locks up..... dropping rpm to about 1800 to 2100 rpm.
your th350/400 torque converter will ALWAYS have that few hundred RPM "slip"
this slip also makes a lot of heat....
some th350s had a lock up TC.... along with some 3 speed FWD trans (th185 iirc)
on an old gen 1 v8 GM.... a 700r4 is a direct bolt on (3 speed + OD + lock up TC)
you will need the factory controller, and some throttle linkage for the TV cable (and know how to set it..... which is easy on stock brackets and carbs)
but a 4l80E is a bit stronger....newer design.... and adapters are out their
you can build a 700r4 to take a lot of power.... if ya cool it, and set the TV cable right
John be putting in that work
At what power level do you feel either changing 1st gear in the 400 or going with a glide is necessary? Excited to see how much better the COW leaves, suspension dialed in & Glide should be quite a big improvement since she likes to Hit those tires hard!
General rule of thumb is not to go with pg until you have at least 550 hp in a big block.
Toby Bielat u dont need a big block u idiot if u have a turbo or nitrous or supercharger
Gsfbffx Pdhhdf chill bud
@Gsfbffx Pdhhdf why you gotta bash the guy You 🤡
Why not just launch in 2nd on the th400
Wouldnt that be the same as changing to a glide??
Running a PG behind my Big Block 9.Oh Ford engine. using 1.76 Straight cut gears. I'm building my own trans :-)
Which is better? Whichever one will help you Stay Toned. That's the real answer.
John your awesome man and your content is killer !!! Quickly has become my favorite channel !! Thanks
3yrs later....You still hanging out here in the comments? 🤣🤣🤣 Love all the videos bro, Freaking amazing content here folks, if you havnt subbed yet then what the hell are you doing! You know the drill get this channel the likes and shares it deserves so we can keep getting the amazing content!
I stay in the comments. It’s my channel lol
Dedenbear cases, transking and Borg Warner internals, with Neil Chance's converters.
Oh and Trans King is out of Houston.
We have run power glides in Top sportsman cars for years.
Outfit looks good.
Shout out from Australia jon doc love ya channel
How about the rear end gear ratio with the power glide, will you need to change the ratio now?
Can we get an updated video of this? Now that you seem to run a 2 speed 400 more frequently
I running a th400 in my 3300lb, will it be cheaper to just shortening my first gear or just do a powerglide?
I have a single turbo coyote and want to do a TH400 swap, I only plan to be 1000hp at most and drive it pretty regularly. What would you recommend I do TH400 or get a stage 3 of my factory trans?
I usually use a late model cd009 pr tr6060 in my builds because I am either drifting or coarse racing. I was just curious what a powerglide was.
Look at that you taught me something new!
John thanks for all the great vids. What stall size r u running and what are you launching at generally?
Also - if you use a 2 step which is part of the question above are you WOT on launch and letting the 2 step hold you.
I'm ready to see some action man, you gonna be rolling lol keep up the great content
Great video and very informative keep it up bro
I believe Coan makes a 1.90 gear set for Turbo 400
Out of all the big transmission companies who’s best? Chasing a 1500-2000hp powerglide 💪🏼
60K soon! Awesome!
Could you have launched the 400 in second gear and got similar results as the powerglide?
Yes you can they make a valve body that will let you leave off the brake in every gear its like 400 buck at jegs.
You could but then the ratio is way off so it won't launch or pull as hard !
7:00 close your legs who’re 😂
You really should have a lock up in it John.
Since you said make a comment if you have any questions I guess i'll drop one in here because i'm just curious what you think. I'm a young car enthusiast that's trying to make
his dreams a reality and trying to soak up as much knowledge as possible. I'm building a pro touring setup 1970 Chevelle that's going to be setup for autocross, but i'm going to be putting a twin turbo 6.0ls in it so it should be at least 1k hp, I also plan on driving it a lot and maybe taking it down the strip once or twice. I'm leaning towards powerglide but am just curious what your opinion is since you're much more knowledgeable than me
When you are driving it on the street a lot the th400 with a lock up torque converter is the way you want to go.
solid housing rear end !! get rid of cv type joint axles
when running the 1/4 mile in the cow what differences will you see going from the TH400 to the glide? Like does the glide hit your max rpm sooner, because I am thinking you will hit high gear or 1:1 sooner in the glide than in the TH400. Just curious. By the 1/4 mile the TH400 is stretched pretty far in the cow I would imagine so just seeing if the glide is more suited for 1/8 mile passes for you.
What power range do you think necessitates a swap to a glide from a 400? I'm building a turbo ls foxbody, somewhere around 900hp for track use. I haven't picked a trans yet but was debating on 400 or glide.
Manual valve body recommendations for the glide? P/t quick release?
I know most people have their own opinions of how to do it. But how did you do go about burnouts with the th400 at the track? Burnout started in 2nd then shift to 1st once at the line? Or start in first and quick bump to 2nd to finish. then back to 1st at the line?
There are SO many options you can get for your PowerGlide. Which ones do you recommend, why, and at what power level?
I really enjoyed this video
Most of the big high hp big name guys that I know of run a th400. A lot use the turbo glide style which makes the th400 basically the same ratio as the powerglide but in general the TH400 is a stronger unit.
I have run T400s for years with zero breakaqge..I am building 2 new cars and plan to use nitrous at the launch...every trans co that I talk to has a different opinion..1 car will be about 3000#, the other..2600#...suggestions?
Do you have to swap a engine frame on a 90 Camaro rs that has a v6 to install a 454 big block
On power glide can you use Reid case and stock power glide internals. Look for power glide to use in my bracket / super street car. I like the idea of the Reid case for I don't have to use Blankets or external shields. what do you think?
I got a th400 in my fbody I love it myself
I have a dart 347 ford in my 88 foxbody and have been debating on either a th400 or glide, my problem is getting the right parts for it to work
😎🇺🇸Hey Buddy 👍 Great stuff as always! very informative ✌️🤙
I also had a powerglide in a 72 ford f100 ranger
I'd like to see John Doc and Cletus McFarland run a couple of times :)
I want to know if you can use a power Glide trans hooked to s small block with 400hps
So which transmission made the car run faster ,quicker ?? At the track ??
Is the length of the power glide longer than the th400 would you have to extend the driveshaft length
Keep making the great videos! When are you gonna build the Colorado with the choo-choo boy turbos?
I have a original power glide in my 71 c10 can I mount my 5.3 to it??? If so I have a torque converter from a ls3 6 speed combo can I use it???
I’m trying to build a Chevy Colorado with a turbo LS and I want to go with a powerglide…. My question is the rear end ratio….. what’s a good ratio with a glide? 3.73? 3.55? I’ll be running probably a 28-29” tire. Maybe a 30” 🤔🤷♂️ Thanks
1.48 first gear ratio, what’s your rear end ratio ? Would love the help ! Thanks man, keep up the great content #LSNasty
I have a 1.58 first for my race car and it’s a 3.50 rear gear
What trans do you think will fit best in a twin turbo around 1000 HP setup ??
Both can be built for 1kHP that's the problem....
